OT - Daylilies & Other Outside Beauties
Wowzers Gail..Glad the snakes never got you..lol..What some wonderful pics!! You have some of the prettiest plants ever..that begonia with the red blooms is to die for..all your plants look great tho..
Lin..oh my gosh yes..I am a dill lover..use it in alot of my cooking..also I make alot of dill pickles in the summer...I even like it sprinkled on potato salad..yummy : )
Oh.........back to the dill..............I saw a girl make deviled eggs one time and only used mustard, mayonnaise and dill from the seasoning shelf. They were great and I make them that way all the time now. (sometimes I just use dill pickles if I am out of the herb)
I LOVE pickles in the eggs... I love pickles period!
Funny thing... Before my surgery I had a crazy sweet tooth. NOW, I want SALT! Pickles, chips, olives...Funny. Guess the hormones are more balanced now.
Oh Gail, your plants just are so beautiful! I love that orchid in the very first (clear) photo and those syngoniums in that same picture! Gorgeous! I think that Syngonium is Mango Allusion! I had one last year but it died. I also had a pretty Croton Andrew that must have kicked the bucket! I had forgotten about that one until your beautiful photo. Mine was no where as big as yours but I loved the colors on that one. Haven't seen them for sale this year. That is unusual with the solid green coming out on that one of yours ... still gorgeous though!
I only have a couple of cane begonias and they have really been doing good since I put them out in the yard under the trees. I am petrified of snakes so I ain't venturing out into the yard in the dark for a photo! When I was on the pool deck earlier I heard something in a tree ... a raccoon or possum I'm sure, but it scared me, as soon as the camera flashed for a picture it sounded like something jumping in the tree! I was in the enclosed screen area by the pool and almost went for an unintentional swim it's so dark out there! I am not going into the yard! LOL.
Your Plumie's are huge! I have about 7 or 8 that I got from Susan in a trade last year ... they are still small. One bloomed last year a dark burgundy color and smelled so good. I dug them up last winter and just left the sticks wrapped in newspaper in the florida room. I did plant them in the ground but was late doing it this year. I am leaving them and hoping we don't have any frost or freezes this coming winter. There's a house about 4 blocks from me that has a huge Plumeria in the front of the house ... I'm hoping mine will survive.
Wow, I love that curly croton in your photo! It's different than mine. That one has a lot of color. I love variegated foliage plants. I have a paint brush croton on the deck too ... will go out and take a picture of it ... although it's not a real pretty croton, just unusual.
I have a snowbush too. I took a cutting from one last fall and it's thin but the color is so white from being out in the sun. I love when they get the pink and white coloration: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2004/
Nancy your Lily's are beautiful. I have some budding up and I can only hope they are as pretty as the ones already shown here!!
Gail and Lin your plants are just so beautiful, I can not even imagine growing "houseplants" like yours outside!! But I also can not imagine no perennials, mercy I couldn't garden at all without them I'm so lousy at it. I need plants that come back for me. LOL
On the up side I do not have to worry about any poisonous snakes here, it is too cold and the winters too long for poisonous snakes to live!! YEA!!!
On the other hand I won't venture too far out after dark because of bears!! LOL I have had them come right into the edge of our garage and swipe the trash can!! Which is why our trash is kept in the garage in the first place, to keep the bears out of it!! Sometimes at night with our bedroom window open our dogs start barking like crazy and this really strong musty scent comes in and DH tells me a bear is in the yard roaming about .... trying to figure out how he can get to our trash in the garage!
But at dusk this evening I took some pictures outside, as Nancy said, after Kim's beauties we'd all have to try it! ^_^
The peachy colored columbine with the yellow center at dusk .... another that I dug up at the 60 year old home last year....

Here is one of my four little flower beds that I work with outside now....... I am proud of them even if they are bitty things compared to most! Remember this is only my third year of gardening outside! ^_^
I am particularly happy with the Sweet Williams that are coming in and blooming from seed I planted last year, they'll look really great in another week I bet!!
~Brenda
Good Morning Ladies..what a great way to start my day admiring your beauties! Lin..that stepping stone is too pretty..I Love that! Such Beautiful plants you have..had to chuckle about the critter..good thing it never came down to an unintentional late night swim for you!..lol..Brenda..you really have some wonderful plants..I really love the foxglove..I had some last year and loved them but they never came back...ticked me off..need to replant I guess..Oh my I really don't know how I would react to a bear roaming thru my yard....lol..I don't think I would venture outside after dark much at all...
WOW, So many pretty shots I don't even know where to start!
Lin, you did GREAT with night shots.
When I do mine, I don't have any light from any source *lol* so it really is pitch dark. I bring out the flashlight but when I'm ready to take the shot, I shut the flashlight off. When I aim my camera and go to push the button, 1/2 way my camera illuminates what is going to be in the picture so that is how I gauge if my flower is centered. I usually take 5 pictures of each flower (I have 5 flash settings) and even take 1 picture without the flash. Then when I come in and upload my pictures, I take the best of the 5 pictures and delete the other 4. I always make sure I have the little flower (macro) button on too. I know it's not the "professional" system but it's the system I use *lol*
Brenda, I can't believe it but I think your season is just a little bit behind my season. I thought Maine was the furthest behind everyone but I truly think Idaho may be a week even two behind us. Unbelievable!
I love foxglove and your dusk picture is just beautiful. I think my love of foxglove is what really attracts me to Sinningia eumorpha type flowers :)
Everyone's flowers are just beautiful!
Gail, I can't get over how fast those epis have grown! Beautiful!!! They will be blooming before you know it! I know one of them is 3 Oranges and I know you love orange flowers so I can't wait to see it bloom.
I can't believe how humid it is there! No wonder your flowers just bloom and bloom and bloom! It looks like a jungle. That picture of the orchid with that humidity is just ominous! I have NEVER seen humidity like that! Unbelievable.
Nancy that NOID Lily is just beautiful! I just LOVE NOID's *lol*
Speaking of NOID's, here are a few of my NOID's from this morning.
Here is a yellow walking Iris. This is the first year it blooms. I have this yellow one and the all blue one called Regina which supposedly is very beautiful.
I bought Regina on E-Bay back before I found gesneriads. In Maine both of these have to be houseplants because they are zoned zone 7 and I'm a 5. Unfortunately for them, I have decided that I'm not bringing them back in because I am not making the space. So, needless to say, I'm going to put them both in the ground and if they make it they make it and if they don't, they don't.
If anyone is interested in saving them, just let me know. I think the flowers are small for the size of the plant but people who have them outside seem to really love them and Regina is more rare than the yellow/white and blue/white as she is all blue.
How much fun is this seeing everyone's photos. Lin, those are great pictures......my flash pretty much lights up the background even at night. Lin, remind me to send you some syngonium cuttings. I have a couple of kind and they are overflowing. (I have a bad short term memory so remind me)
Brenda, I really love your little stone garden with all the color in it. What you are growing is what we grow in the winter months. Sweet William is one of my all time favorites for a winter garden along with the big giant Stock and Snapdragons.........could name a lot but I won't. What I wouldn't give to grow Foxglove!! The only one we can grow is the little short one.
Kim, you just keep finding more beautiful day lilies blooming. They are exceptional choices.
beautiful healthy plant, Kim.........bloom, too!
Oh my goodness.........the water well out???????????
Sally, those are wonderful. How do you get your soil acidic enough to grow azaleas? What nice flowers!
Yep Gail, the well needs to be re-done.
$10,000!
Hubby is a bit stressed and it's a tense morning with no smoking etc.
Going to take a sponge bath *lol*
Good thing I shaved before this all happened *lol*
XO
Kim
Isn't that a bummer! Not long ago I thought I was going to have to have a new septic tank and I did panic. Look at this way (LOL)........at least you are not spending twice that just to get 8 teeth in your mouth (LOL)
Do you feel any better? NO??????
I like having our own well as the water is so good and has none of the stuff city water does in it but when it comes time for a new one they are a pain and expensive, sorry about yours Kim!
I believe you are the day lily queen!!!! I had not idea there were so many varieties!! The Walking Iris is very pretty in her close up .... but your right, that's a lot of plant for that little bloom. LOL
A garden in winter! Now that is something, I think I'll keep my snow after seeing the humidity on your lens though Gail! LOL
I bought a hanging basket already all put together to enjoy while my other flowers outside grow, here it is from dusk last night....
~Brenda

I feed them and hubby puts mulch and peat down sometimes, not often. The Encore's are amazing. With the last rain, they are full of blooms. They love rain more than the sprinkler system, like most plants.
Gorgeous, Brenda. Winter gardening is my favorite. Nice and cool.
