OT - Daylilies & Other Outside Beauties

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Brenda, that is simply amazing that you can grow petunias in the summer. That is 'to die for' basket with the red verbena, etc. I don't blame you for liking your climate.

I lived in zone 6 for 11 years and it was so much fun to grow geraniums in the summer time.
We got to have poppies galore plus all the bulbs in the spring time and summer was like winter here.

I lived in the upper Canyon in Ruidoso, NM with the kids and the creatures would all come around at night, including the bears and great big (my mind has drawn a blank). The would stand at my glass front door with their paws on the glass and scare the bejeebie out of me.

Sally, when I lived in Houston, everyone grew azaleas with all the pine trees for mulching and I still had to put a cup full of sulphur every year on them...........those are nice!

Kim: You've really started something with telling me about the "in the dark" picture taking! LOL.

Here's one I took a little while ago of another noid Coleus, WOW ... the colors are so vivid at night!

Isn't it fun, Lin! wow, yours are really a vivid color with every detail. I have done something wrong with my camera.......somehow the settings got off...........(I could watch the DVD's sent with the camera, but I think I will take it to my computer tech and get him to set everything right on the menu)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

My gosh, Lin................those colors are mesmorizing.........so beautiful

(Zone 1)

Not the best picture but this is Agapanthus "Lily of the Nile". I have had a blue one for about 5 or 6 years and bought this at Wal-Mart last year when they had a bunch of blue ones blooming. This was not in bloom so I was surprised when it ended up being the white one.

Gail, this is so much fun! I'm having a ball. Hubby asked me a little while ago if I wanted him to hold the flashlight for me while I was walking around the yard! Now, isn't that the sweetest thing?

Lin, I just have to start this fall landscaping my yard. I am just dying for some Agapanthus. Our local nursery has some that are the darkest blue I have ever seen. Love that white one......

Sally..Love your Azaleas..that 1st one really does look like a rose!..Love that basket Brenda..petunias are one of my favorites for baskets along with verbena..never tire of them and they keep going strong here all summer! Lin..your foliage plants at night are awesome..man the colors are just Wow!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Bonnie,. the alternathera (sp?) doesn't grow like a pothos. We have them all around here but they do best outside with morning sun or dappled sun. Aren't they pretty!

Here's my outdoor bloom from yesterday :) The wedding was at Whetstone Park of Roses, surrounded by thousands of roses.

Celene, what a gorgeous photo of you and your new hubby!

That is actually my niece, not me. I'm somewhat older than that. LOL Somewhat.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Bummer, I thought it was you and your new 'other half'............Ok......we will let you be older than that (LOL)

South, TX

Oh, well, it is still a lovely photo!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I had a long visit with Ken yesterday, Sally, about streps and how different they are from African Violets when it comes to propagating them. I think I might start adding perlite to my wicking mix for growing them. Everything just stays too wet.

He also said to be sure and only grow the leaves of streps in perlite and vermiculite so I don't have rotting issues......he also suggested a good fungicide watering when I plant the babies up from the mother leaves. I can't wait to try. He uses commerical products but they are too expensive so I am going to just use Physan when I pot them up.

I just remembered that this is the outside bloom thread........oh well..........

Ken is very helpful isn't he? I enjoy talking with him. Good that you had a good talk with him and I hope the new idea works for you.

A photo I took earlier today. I've never planted the begonias in the ground but they seem to love it under the trees in the containers.

And, look who's blooming for me again, Hoya multiflora I got from Kim a few months ago. I love this plant! It blasted buds twice but now seems to be a dependable bloomer! One of my favorite hoyas because of those shooting star blooms!

Kim, I have a question ... the leaves look a bit chlorotic to me ... do you think it needs more light or is it maybe a fertilizer issue? It's the only hoya I've kept inside (took it out just to take a pic in decent light. My house is rather dark but this plant stays in front of an east facing window and does get light.

How beautiful Lin!
That is the reason I kept my Multiflora too as they just love to bloom :)
Don't laugh but Multiflora used to be one that really enjoyed the beer fertilizer. I don't make that fertilizer anymore as I only kept 2 hoyas.
Do you happen to have any epson salts? A tablespoon in the gallon jug the next time you water it would be good :)
As far as light, I have mine in kind of bright light but I think this particular hoya does good anywhere. I had mine in the shade window all winter long and it was happy as a clam there too so it's not fussy.
SO wonderful to see yours keeping it's buds and blooming all the time for you :0) I just knew that she had to get a little bigger, and stronger to not keep blasting. She's a big girl now :) So awesome! Congratulations!

Kim

(Zone 1)

Thank you Kim! Yep, I bought Epsom Salts and Ammonia when I was going to try the beer fertilizer. I never mixed any of it up though ... began reading and sometimes it sounded like such a Great formula and then other times it didn't ... so I never made it. I am so bad about feeding - when I do it's usually with VF-11 or my bloom booster orchid food. I used Miracle Grow once on the hoyas when I was feeding other stuff ... just sprayed everything in sight.

I will mix up the epsom salts when I water again in a couple of days! Thanks for the tip! And, thanks for sharing this Hoya with me! I had never heard of it before and when I saw those shooting star type blooms I fell in love! It is a great plant.

Well, I received a trade box today - some Wood Sage and some huge Surprise Lily bulbs so I'm heading back outside to play in the dirt some more! See ya later!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

My pleasure :) Always, my friend.
OOOOH surprise lilies, so pretty. I have a couple planted but they have never "surprised" me *lol* I got some new ones last year to try one more time and the leaves came up but so far no new surprises *lol*

Have fun playing in the dirt :)

Kim

Had to run back inside and get my camera. I LOVE watching the birds and we've had many redbellied woodpeckers around this year. The babies are so noisy when they are hungry! I mean those little guys can chatter! I heard them and came in to get my camera.

I was amazed they let me get so close, I was maybe 3' away. I am not a good picture taker so these are a tad out of focus but here's Baby waiting for food

And, here's Papa at the feeder eating Suet. (I think this is a male, females don't have as much red down the head and both parents raise and feed the young. "What a Great Dad!"

I know these aren't blooms ... but I think birds are like flying flowers so I hope y'all don't mind me posting these here.

What a wonderful string of pictures Lin. How lucky you were to catch such shots! What pretty birds. Isn't nature grand?

Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Great additions to the pictures, Lin! We all love nature and all the creatures God created.
I don't think my begonias are getting enough light on the front porch as of now. They may have to go out under the trees, too.

(Zone 1)

Thanks Ladies, I love watching the birds.

Do y'all see the pictures? They aren't showing up on my computer?!? I see all the other photo's on this page but my own pic's aren't showing up for some reason. Must be my laptop as every photo of mine is not showing.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

All of them look great on my computer, Lin!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Well I sure wish I could see your pics Lin : ( Can't figure out why..I logged off then back on but still nothing..lol...I will be back and try again later..I just Love red bellied woodpeckers!

(Zone 1)

Oh, so it's not just me? I thought it was something to do with my computer. Every photo I posted today, I can't view on the threads. Maybe I will log off and log back on and see what happens. I will check the desktop machine too.

(Zone 1)

There must be a glitch somewhere in DG. I can see everyone else's pic's but none of mine. Maybe I've been posting too much and have met my limit? ^_^

Nancy: Try uploading a photo and lets see if we can see it. Maybe the "gremlins" are just messing with you and me tonight?

(Zone 1)

Apparently a "glitch" in the system and someone has already reported it: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/877863/

(Zone 1)

And, check this out ... real gremlins! How can they remove the names? Better not log out totally, huh? I wonder if we can get back on if we do? I am gonna try and see what happens. If y'all don't hear from me in 15 minutes ... send out the Posse, hee hee.
