Morning Glories 2008 #08

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

To go back to the old thread, #07

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/866412

I grew this one in 06 and 07. Smaller size leaves
and blooms. Ron said it comes out of Early Call Mixed. It has two different types of lvs,
tri-lobed and heart shaped.

These are my very first MGs. I don't even know what I ordered. Since I got these planted I have gotten seeds from Becky and Onalee but am running behind on time right now.

Thanks for indulging me and letting me show my blooms. We have had over 7" of rain for the last 5 days and the winds have really done a number on these, but got a few pics. At least they are now climbing well.

Gessie, they're all magnificent in spite of the rain and wind. I was watching my vines flapping in the microbursts we were having this afternoon, just hoping they wouldn't be shredded like they were last year.

Ooooh!

Judith and Gail - Some beauties!

Gail - You have some VERY nice cultivars growing and blooming! Welcome to the MG obsession! :-) :-)

Gail! They look great! 7", huh? Even with what we have received off & on over the last week, I don't think it adds up to even half that!

I have to wait until the weekend to take pictures of most of my blooms . . . the morning glories I'm growing don't like to make an appearance until after noon! Dracula is a good morning bloomer, but that's about it!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I can feel the obsession coming on big time!
Syrumani, we hadn't had rain in over 3 months, so I can't complain. I know that you all have had some nice rains but we missed them 'back when'.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Looking Good (!)...

Gail - this duo here

looks nice with the pleasing contrast of the colors

Yes, but Gail . . . don't forget . . . this past week is the first rain we've had in MONTHS! (I can't even remember when "back when" was!). I'm not complaining though . . . some is better than none!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Ron, thanks but I need to go look in the pots as I marked what is in there (LOL).
I am ready to stretch my brother's cattle fencing all over and around my house!

This is just waaaay too much fun for a girl to have!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

All beauties!!! I'm sooo jealous!!! Flowers for me soon though!!!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Congrats Gail, all beauties.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Gail - Glad to see you "hooked". :-)

Most of mine are slowly dying along the picket fence. I have been spraying with fungicide, but it's not helping with the rust, so will just let them go so I can collect seeds. Then I will clean that area out and start some new seeds. I'll probably remove the bark and spray again along the ground, fence, and concrete donuts.

I have some MGs growing along the backyard privacy fence. They to are developing rust despite anything I try to do to prevent the spread. It continues to storm and rain here. A lot of wind blowing when the storms roll in. So ... losing battle against the fungus right now. But the blooms are still beautiful!

Here is one of the ones against my privacy fence. Not sure what it is. I am wondering if it is a seed I received from Arlan which he labeled "Dia". Maybe Arlan will see this photo and let me know. (Hint, hint!)

This one looks like possibly Star of India or maybe even a cross from Plum Shadows which I also planted in that area.

I am not sure what this one is? Possibly one from Karen (bluespiral)? Youjiro Baby Blu N Pink?

And this is a vine grown from Fuji Hot Pink Frost that I grew out last Fall. It is kinda beat up due to the weather. All of the above are along the privacy fence (growing up the trellises).

P.S. - Try the Copper sulphate for the rust...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Love getting this much of an education, Ron and Becky. I am going to start taking notes from these threads. Thanks so much, Ron!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Ron - Thanks for all the possible IDs! You ROCK!!!

I can't find Copper Sulphate at any stores locally. One salesman told me that he thinks the product was pulled from the shelf in our area. Said it had something to do with the chemicals possibly leaching into the ground and into the drinking water or something. Heck if I know? We have citrus groves all over this county ... you can't tell me that THOSE pesticides they spray the groves with aren't harmful! Sheesh!

Ron - Could you give me the name of a product with Copper Sulphate in it? Maybe I can order it online somewhere.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Becky........remember that you can find anything you want in Houston, Texas at Southwest Fertilizer on Bellaire Blvd ...........it is easier to call and they ship anywhere everyday........the area code is 713
Sorry I don't have the number for you. I ordered STEM and many other things from them and got them two days later by UPS.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks Gail! I'll see if they have an online store!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I think they do but nothing is on there. (not much) But they do have anything one could look for if you call.

Becky - Here are some additional links and posts where I had mentioned the Copper Sulphate previously...including links to copper products to control fungus and related pathogens

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4364526

Copper sulfate pentahydrate is a fungicide and when mixed with lime it is called Bordeaux (bordo) mixture to control fungus and rust on roses, fruit trees,vegetables,etc.,...

Hope that helps...

Thanks everyone!

Oh yes! I will be looking into all the links posted. I would really like to get the rust under control, but my biggest worry is keeping it as organic as possible. Too many butterflies, hummers, birds, and other creatures that I want to keep healthy and safe in my yard.

I haven't been posting as much lately because I am busy adding another responsibility to my already crazy schedule. Found a baby Cardinal last week. Parents were close by, but were NOT feeding it. By the end of the day the baby was starving and had managed to make it to the vacant lot and got caught up in the brier vines. Horrible thorns on those nasty vines. I had to throw some pants on and ease my way out to unsnag it. Poor baby birdie! What a mess. It was so weak it couldn't even chirp anymore. So I have been caring for it ever since. I called the local vet who said that they would take it and call a woman who rehabilitated birds to release. But if the bird was not in perfect condition they would just put it to sleep. Not good! So ... the bird is still with me currently. It's a little fighter and I wasn't about to have the vet kill it just because it got hurt a week ago. It's so cute and is trying to fly! It chirps to let me know when it's feeding time again. And it loves to perch on my finger and stay there! LOL! But I have a box for it to stay in and have had to take it to school a couple days already because no one was home to feed it. So it's been quite interesting.

I posted a thread in the Bird Watching Forum about this little one:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/872806/

I am sooooo glad tomorrow is Friday! One more week of summer school and then I will have 3 weeks off! Yipee!! I can NOT wait!

Becky -

And what a great new project with your new baby bird. I believe he/she would stay near your house if you let the bird go when it is ready. We have the same Cardinals and a few other type birds that are always on our property. A Wren had babies in our outside building this year where she made her nest.

Remember I know nothing and I couldn't open those two sites Emma listed. (lazy computer or something on my part)
I did call Southwest Fertilizer in Houston and he said the best thing for rust on morning glory would be Mancazeb.

*****if someone disagrees with this, just tell me. I don't even know if it is something I can buy around here.

I didn't even see those precious baby birds................how sweet is that!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Gail - My thread on the Bird Watching forum is keeping some DGers fascinated. :-)

Just to let everyone know my personal perspective on this ... I don't recommend hand-raising baby birds. Too much can go wrong. But I am going to give Peepers as much of a chance to reach maturity as I can. This bird would've been handed over to the vet to be rehabilitated, but with the injuries it had, they would've put it down. It made it through the weekend and I just felt it was a fighter and deserved a second chance. If I hadn't intervened the bird would not have made it an hour longer because it was so dehydrated and hung up on that thorny vine. I am sucker for babies and wildlife. I should've been a forest ranger or zoologist or something to do with animals! But we don't always get to be what we want to be when we grow up. Though I am still not grown up all the way yet! So maybe there is hope! I could still be a wildlife rehabiliator. I've got a good yard for such an endeavor. (Ya never know ...) LOL!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

My mother growing up would never let us 'mess with the birds and their nests'. She said...........and now my brother says, "Every living creature deserves a home". We grew up that way and now I couldn't hurt any living thing (except for my rattlesnakes).........

going to jump over to the Bird Forum (didn't even know we had one)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, wonderful story re baby "Peepers". I was also fascinated and read
every post on your thread. Way to go!
