Morning Glories 2008 #08

With all that fertilizer they are going Warp Factor 9! LOL you have good results!

I call it "overdrive", Joseph! LOL! And they stay on that warp speed for weeks! That's the best part! LOL! I wonder if it is like a caffeine rush that lasts for weeks??? LOL!

Becky, I love the Pink Porcelain bloom, reminds me a little of Pink Zebra.

Holly, lovely blooms.

Pretoria, South Africa

Becky, how often do you fertilize?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I fertilize my garden beds including the MGs every 3 weeks during the growing season. I soak the ground with the mix at the base of the plants near the ground where the roots are. I really soak it too, because the roots spread out as the plants grow.

I grabbed the camera this morning. At least my first MGs are climbing and blooming.

gessie, that's going to make a great screen when it fills in. They look great even now!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I waited too long to get started this year.......so am starting seeds in August for the fall bloom.........it has been in the 90's and that is too hot for them.....but that is how I learn (LOL)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Gail - They look great! I. nils like the hot temps, but you have to make sure to keep them watered. They naturally look wilted during the day but should pop right back when the sun is off them. How big are the pots you have them in?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

They are 9" across but real deep.......real unusual pots. I am good about watering every single day and sometimes twice a day. The next ones I am not going to plant in clay pots but use the ugly vinyl pots and put more plants in each pot (I think you told me to do that).....3 to a pot and use 3 bamboo sticks to get them started before they start to climb on a fence?????????

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

You might like planting more in a single LARGE pot using the bamboo. It always looked really nice for me. I am thinking I may do some large pots next, too! :-)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I wondered how big I could get...........thanks for the info!

gessie, They look very nice. What a beautiful floral wall they will be.
Becky, I have quite a few blooms. Ric mixes a time release fertilizer into the potting soil when he mixes it, but I fertilize several times over the summer as well. I like hearing what other people use and what kind of results they get.

Holly - Your vines are sure looking nice and lush! And I see that you are now getting several blooms each day too! Keep up the good work! And keep posting photos of your beauties! :-)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Holly, yours are so full and pretty! Today I fertilized mine so heavily they may die on me (LOL)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks, they really are looking nice. I have about 4 or 5 different ones blooming right now. Can't wait to see what different one will open up next. I don't know how I will ever keep my seed separate when I start collecting them. I remember someone mentioning a colored straw method. I'll have to read up on that.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Holly - There are two ways to use the straws. Both ways require you to slit the straws length-wise and then cut them into short pieces. You need different colored straws. You can mark your vines one of two ways ... choose a color straw for each vine. Trace the vine from the ground up marking it by slipping the straw pieces over the vine stem. The other way is to again choose a color and mark the blooms. You can add a straw piece right below or above the bloom on the stem. I started marking blooms because my vines along my fence just became too long and mixed up with the rest of the vines that it is nearly impossible to tell one vine from the other now. I hope this idea works for you, too! Good luck with that!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I don't have a problem with telling which blooms are for which vines, since I've got distinctly different plants growing from the one next to it. I AM using the straws to mark blooms on the I. obscura, only because the flowers are so small, and the leaves are so full, I may not be able to find them again after the petals fall off!

I am NOT going to try and get front shots of these anymore!

I think the picotees are much happier since I added more plastic fencing behind them.

Jackie - Very cool with the heart shaped leaves...

I know there are Ipomoea nil with heart shaped leaves but is there any way for you to post a sepal shot (?) and / or a photo of any of the developing seedpods (?)...

Thanks (!)...

Hey everyone....great looking blooms going on! I sure do miss not having any this year.

Becky, your picture here... http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=5231795

is gorgeous, but definitely not "Dai", as this strain has white flowers, flecked with purple/blue and will produce reverse tube flowers. The leaves are wrinkled in a "crepe" fashion and are cordate or heart shapes.

Hi Arlan (!)...glad to see that you are keeping a ' vigilant ' eye on the MG forum...

Hope you are doing well and will be 'up and running ' with some MG's for next season...

Thanks Ron. I will try to get a few pics of sepals and seedpods soon.
