How big are the blooms on the Kohkan? Didn't you say they were over 5"? Nice, vibrant color!

Beautiful blooms Becky and Nichole. I have tiny buds showing, finally.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Jackie!

Here is a new one for me. I don't know what it is. It has large heart shaped leaves. Probably an I. purpurea, but I am not sure. I had it labeled as one of Shawna's Kikyou Booty. Any ideas?

becky - Can you provide a sepal shot of the one you posted above...doesn't look like a 'purp' to me...

Thanks...

Ron - I finally got a photo of the sepal. The bloom on this mystery vine is small 1 1/2 - 2". Here is a photo of the sepal after the bloom expired.

Any idea what it might be?

Judith - The blooms do look similar, but the leaves on mine are large heart shaped leaves. I am stumped. I hope Ron can ID it for me. :-)

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Hi Becky - I agree with Revclaus in that she has in fact provided you with the correct botanical identity and shows that she is getting sharp (!) ala her sepal identification...

Ipomoea hederacea sepals and leaves...

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/167385/

Ipomoea hederacea flower color can vary from a very light blue most usually having an all light tube
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/9563/
through darker shades with or without darker star patterns along the primary folds and with a bit of fuchsia around the lower throat
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/7763/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/125100/
blue-lavender

Ipomoea hederacea is much less commonly seen in a pink-lavender and rarely in red

Hope that helps...

I think this moon flower may not wait for the moon tonite . . .

Thanks Judith and Ron! The leaves on mine threw me off. I must've gotten seed labels mixed up when I planted it. I did plant an I. hederacea seed, but thought it was in another container. Thanks for positively IDing it for me! :-)

Nichole - My moonflower seeds are FINALLY germinating! Sheesh ... I thought they had rotted or been eaten by something. Be sure to post a photo when it blooms! I just love Moon Flowers!

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

But what about the round heart shaped leaves instead of the three lobed leaves?

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

revclaus - Check out these several links again...

Some additional comments and cross-links
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/772080/
read the last sentence of the page that you originally linked to where var.integriuscula and "Entire Leaf MG" are mentioned...
http://www.missouriplants.com/Bluealt/Ipomoea_hederacea_page.html

The exact shape of the sepals are the key to the species identity...the sepals always take precedence over other parts in MG species ID'ing...

Common names like "Ivy Leaf MG" can actually be very misleading and that is why many people devoted to identification prefer the botanical terminology...

We're getting there...

P.S. - studies on what people remember from material presentations;

a) information presented at the beginning
b) some information from the middle
and
c) information at the ending

...is what most people strongly tend to remember...

so therefore,I intentionally repeat myself and try to make the beginning, the middle and the end contain some of the same material >to try and insure that key points are remembered...at the cost of being criticized (by some) for being overly repetitive...

The Southern Preachers Law of 3...

1) Tell them what you are going to tell them

2) Tell Them

3) Tell them what you just told them...

e.g.,

a - beginning of lecture) > My friends, I'm gonna tell you about the word of God...
b - middle of lecture ) > Yes,My Friends The Word of God is...
c - end of lecture ) > My Friends, I just told you about the Word of God...

Main Key in identifying most Morning Glory species are:

aa) The sepals

bb) The sepals

cc) The sepals

P.P.S. - Main Photo View Needed is the Triple S = SSS = Sacred Sepal Shot

Joseph coined that one...

Ron, you're preaching to the preacher here! LOL. Yes, I did remember the sepal part, but obviously didn't remember about the leaves.

I have some seeds germinating and growing into lovely vines along my back fence in the retangular containers. Here is today's newest bloom. I believe it is Hananubuki? I don't know who I got the seeds from as there was no name on the package, but I truly THANK whoever shared with me! It does look a little different than the photos posted in the plantfile data base.

The I. hederacea seed/vine above came from Arlan. Thank you, too! :-)

The Kohkan vine on the left side of the arbor has reached the top of the trellis on that side of the arbor. I am hoping that it starts growing over the top of the arbor soon. This vine covers it soooo nicely. Such a beautiful vine!

I hadn't noticed the star pattern near the center of this JMG Commercial Super Colorful Mix of seeds. Is this cultivar probably Mt. Fuji Pink? The star pattern is really cool looking!

Both the JMG Festival Mix bloom and the Jishi threw out some interesting patterned blooms today as well!

All gorgeous blooms Becky. A lovely Morning Glory parade of blooms you've
given us this summer. The best part, it's not over. Keep em coming

Yes, keep 'em coming. They have to support me till my own start blooming. LOL

Hi Becky - All nice...

On this one here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5134053

It can be a tough call when intermediate colors are produced as to whether it is a
Fuji no Beni
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/162504/

A dark Fuji no Momo
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/152328/

or a
Fuji no Mine
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/165826/

I'd say it's a Fuji no Beni...

The various degrees of coloration along the main folds is actually more common than pure light fold / rays into an all white tube like these here
Fuji no Momo
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/152384/

Fuji no AO...almost pure white rays...very striking
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/45279/

Yaguruma with just a hint of a halo around the throat
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/174762/

Maisugata...nice clear rays with a light fuchsia tube

Thank you Jackie and Judith! Here is the view I see every morning when I step out onto my back patio area. This area is new. A dream in my head a year ago that was completed this past winter. It really starts my day off on a good note to do a walk-about every morning to see what's blooming!

Thanks Ron! The vine blooms certainly looks like Fuji no Beni. Thanks for the ID on that!

What about this one? Does it appear to be Hananubuki?

The thick green vines in the background climbing up my privacy fence are Passiflora vines. And you can also see the notorious bird feeder to your left in the background as well. I get so many local birds at that feeder several times a day, plus the squirrels and fruit rats. I caught one of the baby rats in my hand the other day. Dumped him (unharmed) over the privacy fence. (I don't kill anything but wasps and fire ants. Also aphids and Milkweed beetles. LOL!) I have been hearing the owls at night again. The rat's days are numbered now due to the owls and the local hawk.

We got hit by lightning earlier in the week. I have one of those small resin waterfall ponds in one of the flower beds. The surge blew my old pump. I have the trellis with 2 of Antoinette's Blue Jishi X Ten Ten vines growing in a container. When I moved the container to get to the electrical cord for the pump, I accidentally severed one of the vines. I was sick about it. It has tons of buds on it as well as seed pods, so I stuck the end in water and am hoping to get some seeds despite my error. Here is the poor vine in water. It had several blooms this morning! LOL! It's been in water all week. I have my fingers crossed that the seed pods mature for collecting!

Hi Becky - The hanahubuki can be a tough call because the various companies all seem to have their own blizzard variations of this, but from what I can see in your photo it looks like what you have is the pattern most often seen from what Takii offers as their
Hannahubuki...it also comes out of their large flowered mix

TTY,...

Ron

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Here's the waterfall pond and you can see the trellis to the right. Looks kinda bare now on the left side with one of the vines missing. :-(

I did add some more MG seeds to the container. And I saw that one has sprouted this morning. Uh oh! I forgot what seeds I planted. (sheesh!) That's what happens now that I am working Summer School. I have to be there much earlier than the regular school year. So I am rushing around every morning as the sun rises to get everything done. Oh well ... I guess when the vines bloom, I'll figure out what MG cultivar they are! LOL!

Thumbnail by beckygardener
(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thank you, Ron. I wasn't sure if it was even a Hananubuki. I haven't grown that cultivar before. I really like all of the Japanese cultivars.

I must confess ... I grow them just to enjoy them and like to get an ID for seed collecting, but there are soooo many cultivars, that it would take me a lifetime to study them all. I appreciate your expertise and years of knowledge! Thanks for helping me ID some of my MG vines! :-)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

I love your yard Becky. The waterfall pond is really nice.

Becky, I shared with you but can`t remember which ones. I sent a number other people whole sets of packets with different large flower varieties and they could have in turn shared with you out of those. Who knows? Your pink blizzard looks a lot like mine. You have to be careful not to misjudge colors by pictures since the flowers themselves will look entirely different on a cloudy day and on day when it is clear. So, mine is probably Hannahubuki too.

BTW, this pink blizzard came from Cynda(spelling?) on ebay. I purchased some mixed seeds and found this pink blizzard one, tied it to get selfed seeds and here it is again back exactly like before.

Karen - The last time I received seeds from you, they were for Purple Blizzard PB12. That was back in September of last year. I inquired a couple of other times about some other MG vines that you were growing, but you told me that you were not sharing any seeds of those. I haven't asked for any seeds since. You must have me mixed up with someone else here on the MG forum.

I think the Hannahubuki seeds came from someone who grew them last season. I usually ask for seeds when I see a photo of a bloom that someone is growing out at that time. Unfotunately, I just didn't think to mark on the packet who they came from. I have since started doing that, so I can thank folks again when I grow them out!

The Fuji no Beni came from Derek last September when some of us did the Halloween candy swap for seeds.

The other seeds I received from you last summer were the Purple Blizzard & Solid MG grow-out that you did, where you sent 5 seeds to a number of folks here. Two baggies of MG seeds is all that I have received from you since I started growing MGs.

I have gotten a lot of seeds from many folks here, so it's unfortunate that I didn't mark some of the seed packs as to who they were from. My bad!

Anywho ... whoever sent me the seeds for Hannahubuki ... I genuinely appreciate it! This vine is BEAUTIFUL!!! :-) THANK YOU!!!!!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Becky, what I said was you could have gotten them from someone I gave them to. I gave to them and they gave to you. Or Maybe Not. You could have got them from anyone here judging by all the nice pictures over the years.

They do favor mine but that isn`t conclusive by any means. It could help me out with the I.D. though. ;)

Wherever you got them they are beautiful!

Feel free to ask me for seeds anytime. No doesn`t mean never.

Some, I can`t share because I need all the seeds to do a grow out to find something I`m looking for. For example, to keep a mutant strain going you have to grow a large number of seedlings so you can find the mutant cotyledons and single those out to use the pollen. If you give too many of them away too soon you could loose your important plants to maintain your strain. Once you have a Lot of seeds and your strain is going well the seeds can be shared more freely.

Karen

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Becky, Here is another pink blizzard that favors yours Beth shared last year.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4012011

And I might as well share a picture of another project. It is partly wilted and is not at its best here. You can see the doubling it gets from the kikyo and the larger petals from the large flower.

Karen

Karen - I really had not seen where you were offering seeds on any previous posts since last year. I think you had one other grow-out where you shared seeds, but I don't remember any other offers. And I remember you saying that you didn't grow that many different cultivars because you were doing grow-outs for new cultivars you were creating. Which is why I figured the Hannahubuki wasn't from you. (That cultivar was created in Japan.)

I know that most of the MGs that you post photos of are new cultivars you are trying to create of which you won't be sharing seeds anytime soon. So I know not to ask about seeds.

I have a lot of different seeds of different cultivars that so many generous folks here on the MG forum have so kindly shared. Right now there is only one that I am looking for seeds of and I know you don't have it because I asked in a post last season and hardly anyone grows it or had seeds to share.

I do like to do seed trades for seeds I don't have. I collect & trade from my own vines because I also enjoy sharing the joy of these beautiful (and often overlooked) vines. I have been known to share them with anyone who wants to see what all the fuss is about. That's my way of getting others interested in MGs! I had no idea a year ago just how beautiful and under-rated these vines were!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Thanks for sharing with me Becky. I think it is fun to compare pictures and just enjoy them.

Karen

Edited: I just realized here lately that Becky stated I was only growing to create "new varieties". I had mentioned to Becky I didn`t share pictures of a lot of known cultivars not I didn`t have them or grow them. I have no idea if the "known cultivars" will come true from seeds either or which ones are crosses that will throw variations. The truth is this is a misunderstanding. I`m working on getting seeds that come true to type for myself first and then I could be a good trader who has the seeds that look like the picture everyone wants. This has been a learn as I go endeavor and I will continue in my garden journal where any sincere interest or questions may be asked privately through Dmail.

I also have been working on different less commonly seen colors and patterns which are not necessarily "new" morning glories or a big deal unless you are a morning glory enthusiast. The mutant strains I`m working with are a hobby effort to enjoy the plants and learn about them before sharing seeds so that the seeds I share will look like the picture or at least a large percentage of them will conform as much as can be expected with seeds. Happy Gardening :)

Becky, wacha looking for?

To all - thank you for the incredible blooms and tales & pics of growing them. Syrumani, my time in San Antonio was too long ago, but I'll never forget the time our high school choir was competing with other choirs and being drowned out by the winds pounding on the building ... trying to imagine a wind-friendly morning glory ... wouldn't it be fun to genetically modify an MG so that its roots would be happy in air like those epiphytic bromeliads & orchids growing high up on tree branches? I know - be careful what you wish for. Still, it was so much fun having rampant garlands of MGs everywhere on our hillside last year ... one can dream.

Ron, are there any epiphytes in the morning glory family?

waving at Patootie - will visit the next thread.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

P.S. Becky, Didn`t you grow Hannahubuki last year? That might be seeds you saved from last year and I agree they are not from me.

Karen

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I got the seeds from Ronnie! She d-mailed me and I am sure they were from her! THANK YOU, Ronnie! :-)

Karen - I knew they weren't seeds from you. Your bloom is a different color than mine. And your bloom shows more of a ray in the folds. Mine doesn't. Definitely two different cultivars. Maybe yours is a Hannahubuki crossed with something else?
