Today's Weather in Your Garden - 21
UHHHOAH
Good job, Sherrie, of showing the differences between the GH plants and those left out.
Nobody can win with rushing the season. Many plants just won't grow and live up to their potential when they're planted in cold soil.
My best advice is to mark you calendar for next year so you won't lose plants to frost. Probably June 1 is a safe date for you, ge, but always watch the low temperature for the night. The same holds true for the first frost in the fall. Save what you want long before that first frost is due to hit.
And remember that average last frost date is just that - average. Some years you will have frosts well after that date.
That's so true. We didn't have our last frost in 2006 until January of 2007!
I should have said average last and first. 'Lasts' can be much later and 'firsts' can be a lot earlier.
You did say "average", Victor.
Our average first frost of fall is Nov. 11th. The year it happened on Nov. 6th (back in the mid 80's) I was crushed. I just didn't want to face winter five days sooner.
We had planned to plant the tomatoes today but with 40 expected tonight I know we'll be waiting and watch the weather reports.
Off I go to plant snaps, asters, and more than can tolerate the cool nights.
Such good advice. And thank you, Sherrie, for the photos of the plants. That's really good for cause and effect learning!
Yes, but I first said only 'last'. Same applies at both ends!
The last shall be first?
and the first shall be last.
It's supposed to get to 68 today but I don't know it's a little chilly with the breeze 60 degrees. Sunny.
yep its warm sun but cool breeze too cool to sit on the deck and plan more garden.
OMG, we have a frost warning 1AM-6AM tomorrow. My bearded irises and peonies are out. I'm sposta contribute to our iris society show on sunday. This is a cruel joke.
Oh Harper your nieces are so gorgeous... just want to play with them.... soooo cute!!!
well, we had tons of rain yesterday... and today I am at work... and the day is really gorgeous!!!!
This day was spectacular! I loved the cool air mixed with lots of sunshine. Between yesterday and today, I've moved the more tender plants inside just in case we get some of the scattered frost which is forecast. SO glad I've held off planting anything! Who would have guessed there might be frost in our area this late in the season? But I do watch what the on-line forecast says and hope this will be our last until late in the fall!
Currently 66 in my area, although I think it's even cooler than what they're saying. Let's hope it stays warm enough so that the JMs don't take another hit.
For non-NYCers, today is 'Manhattan Solstice'. On May 28th and July 12th, the sun sets directly in line with Manhattan's cross streets! (The grid of Manhattan is not aligned with cardinal directions. Uptown is actually northeast, not north.)
Edited to say ne, not nw.

Thanks for the trivia, Victor!
Nice bushy clematis, WC!
Nice forest, WC. Great clematis, Kass. Which is it?
Mrs. Cholmondely?
I think she is more lavender.
You beat us with the Low. DD and I covered everything expecting a low of mid 30's again but it's 44* now so we missed the expected second frost.
36 and holding. They have us going down to 35 tonight. I got to the garden and looked, what a mess. 2 weeks ago it was rototilled and now weeds popping up inside and around the edge. I have no help with the garden. I busted my butt yesterday and I got one row of corn planted. Yippee. Lets see what today brings......
39 here.... man that's close
we are due for a nice day hi inthe 70's
Visiting sister in Trumansburg for the annual "Welcome Sweet Springtime " luncheon.
There are five of us who have been doing this for 30 years.
Taking plants of course, sister's new abode needs a garden, she is working on it.
I would be very surprised if she went nuts over this, she is extreemly diciplined but she did go to the Bluestone sale.
Maybe there is hope.
There's always hope! (Tee Hee!!)
Our weather this AM ....
very light on the frost, as it was 32° when I got up and wandered out to the 'other' beds ...
Currently it is 40° with a light southerly breeze bringing in the warmer temps for today.
The humidity is higher than yesterday, at 76% with the dewpoint at 36°. The barometric pressure is 30.07 in. and steady.
Temps tonight to reach only in the low 40s, thank goodness.
Did I hear that there is rain in the forecast for the weekend?
Our night time temps have stayed in the 40's for over 2 weeks now and I sleep with my window cracked a few inches...it's great!
Today I woke up at 6:30 to 46 degrees and very sunny. Should get up to 73 today but will be breezy.
Rain is due here for Saturday.
57 now and going to get to 68 today, 70 tomorrow.
48 and clear.
59 now. I feel like I'm in a poker game!
54 now
