Harper's Birthday - Part 6!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

My old fridge wasted its entire contents as it permanently ceased operation during a hot spell and we had just gone shopping. Mom had to buy us the new one. :-(

Anyone heard from Louise (DonnieBrook) today? I wonder how her DSGB turned out? (That's Dear Step-grand-baby!)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I hate when that happens. It can get pretty stinky.
Yes, I'm anxiously awaiting word about the new arrival.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, and coolers filled with warm water that used to be ice and warm yogurt that used to be milk and ... it was right after the Round Up at Kassia's so I had a huge Tupperware full of sourcream and dill dip.

Now Harper has the "OFFICIAL" Birthday present. How many years worth?

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Thanks everyone! I'm very pleased. I've had yummy meals and even a night light on the hood!

Good luck Louise's DSD and DSGB!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! My DSGB is a Girl!! 38 years ago, my former MIL told me that she had never been wrong in telling the gender of a baby, and I was having a girl. Well, come on, you guys know me well enough to understand that of course I went right out and filled the closet with adorable little girl clothes. I can still remember one sweet little dress and hat with teeny purple flowers on it. But it didn't look very good on my BOY baby! Oh Man! I had baby girl presents for years! Now I wish I had saved some of them for little Tallaby. Yes, that's right...."Tallaby". Never heard of that name? Me neither. It was my DH's grandmother's family name. Tallaby Katherine. So there you have it! Happy Birthday, Dear Harper!! LOL

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Happy Birthday Baby Tallaby and Happy Birthday Harper!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Beautiful name!!! Congrats and what a birthday present!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Happy birthday to BOTH girls!!
Louise ... Tallaby almost made it late enough to celebrate a birthday with Little Miss "M"! Congrats to the new proud grandma and grandpa!!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Happy August birthday, Harper! Whatcha doin' in the garden this month?

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Not enough! That's what I'm doing in the garden this month!

Congratulations Louise on Tallaby's birth!!

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Harper, I sense we are getting closer to your BD. Congrats on your new appliance acquisition. She's a beaut! What's cooking at your place? Anything from the garden?

The glass front on the oven at Maypop blew up while we were gone this week. The repair guy says, "they do that". Okay...? He says it's a tempered glass/weight thing. He was actually here to repair the dishwasher that is down and the washing machine that is dancing around even though it's been leveled. I'm getting sick of "modern" conveniences.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Laurel - it's cool how you trained your appliances to all act up at the same time. Way to save on the service charges.....or did he charge by the piece? It's amazing what the charge is for someone to just show up at your door.

We have lived here almost four years, and each year has been a major appliance replacement or two. The only thing left to replace is the stove/oven.

5th year living in this house. Replaced everything but the fridge. Even the hot water heater. I hate the stove - it is gas and I cant get used to it.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

LOL Sherrie. The refrigerator is the one I replaced last month. I bought it for the kids and they love it! It sure holds all the stuff we need for this huge family!

I even replaced the kitchen sink! It was the double and I had to have the big single 450 bucks later.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

OK. I confess. We haven't had to replace the kitchen sink yet. But one of the bathtubs is next on the list.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL, Sherrie, I hate single sinks and electric stoves, ha ha ha!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Great... my wall oven has a glass front. I hope it doesn't explode!

Candyce, we've lived here four years too, and have replaced the washer, dryer, refridgerator and now the wall oven, cooktop and hood. There aren't anymore appliances to replace! Well, there's the boiler, that's okay, thank goodness. It heats our water, so there is no hot water heater. Oh yeah! We replaced the oil tank. No air conditioners here, but we did have the mold ridden original one removed. One day, I want a dishwasher, but we have to hire a contractor to cut a space for it first.

I'd like to replace the kitchen sink, but there's nothing wrong with it. I guess I'll just do the faucet. It drips now, unless you have the handle pushed ever-so-slightly to the right. When I have the time, I'm going to re-do the counter and backsplash with tile. I'll use cobalt blue mosaic tiles for the top, and I'll make a mosaic design for behind the cooktop. I might do the design I have here in the photo. I haven't decided yet.

Oh yeah, we also replaced all the windows. The roof comes next. It has to be replaced all the way down to, and including the plywood. So far, I've paid for all these replacements. I'm hoping DH is gonna cover the roof.

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, he ought to get you a new roof for your birthday! Come on, now. That's very nice tile in your picture. I tried to get a tile backsplash in my bathroom a few years ago and I ended up with something which I will probably have to pay someone ELSE to take out. He just did an awful, crappy, bad, shoddy, poor job when we weren't home and we had no contract, just a loose verbal agreement. Live and learn.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Harper, I hope your wall oven doesn't explode either, but the beekeeper who was here today (you don't want to know) agreed, "they do that". I've never heard of such a thing. I also don't know about boilers and have never seen an oil tank. Where do you put it? What kind of oil goes in it?

I love the tile project, but then again, I love laying tile. Call me. Just be forewarned that solid, dark colors on the counter surface show scratches very quickly. I just did one of our rentals with a tile counter and will send a picture. Nothing special, design wise, but it does have some cobalt blue, black and seafoam green on the surface. I've learned from older projects that dark colors don't hold up but are great for the splashes.

Jan, there's nothing special about training appliances to act up on que. The kids can do it, the pets can do it, what's so special about machines? They listen up about as well as the kids and pets.
Laurel

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed about the oven. (oh please don't explode, oh please don't explode).

The oil tank looks like this. It's in my basement close to, but not too close to the boiler. It takes about 275 gallons of what looks and smells like crude oil, but I don't know what it is. They just call it heating oil.

I'd love to see a photo of your rental tile counter. Thanks for the advice on the dark colors... now I wonder what I'll do for the counter surface... Any ideas?

Laurel - well said. How true and toooo funny.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Update...
At 6 a.m. DH informed me there is no water. The dumpster is on it's way for the chimney rubble and must make it up the mountainside. The scaffolding truck got stuck for three hours and they ended up having to carry the scaffolding up hill to the house and then downhill to the chimney. It took all day for them to do that and erect the scaffolding. Bet they'll be sore for a month or two. The beekeeper is on day three (only he hasn't arrived yet) of trying to remove the bees from the chimney. He can't find the queen and has created this elaborate set up of hive, towels and tarp to coax the bees out. He removed as much honey and comb into his hive as he could get at. The bees, approximately 60,000 by his estimate, are not happy and are all around (and in) the house. Hopefully a day in the garden will calm them down and they'll all fly into his hive tonight. It appears he accidentally left the hose not quite cut off while cleaning up. It was enough to run the spring cistern dry during the night. The pump is probably burned out. I'll have to pull the concrete lid and climb in with the salamanders to check. DH informed me there are certain things real men don't do and that's it. :>)

I'm thinking about changing my name to Rosanne Rosannadanna because It's Always Something!!!! Will post photos when able. In the meantime, send positive energy to mechanical things this way. Maybe the pump just over heated. I hope, I hope.

My gosh I think I would fire them all and start over. Even with the husband if he dont want to climb down the hole!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Can you say domino effect?

Positive energy, positive energy - laurel NEEDS you. Okay, it's on its way! Keep us informed.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

When it rains, it pours, so the saying goes. Sorry to hear about all these problems at Maypop!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Laurel, no water is no fun! Poor you! Best of luck with all these darn, stupid problems - and send a picture of yourself in with salamanders, please

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

So I'm laughing so hard the tears won't stop. The bee guy just left. Without the bees. They swarmed and are now spending the night way up in a tree by the garden. He spent hours with a rifle trying to shoot the limb off the tree. Then he borrowed the chain saw and cut down the wild cherry tree, but wild grape is holding the limb with the bees way up there. Then he waved goodby and drove off into the moonset and then we heard weird tire noises and cracking wood. DH went down the road to check it out. The bee guy had driven off the road and through our pasture fence. DH says he took a fence section down and also hit a tree. What can I say, but it is moonshine season (which comes after early huntin' season and before late fishin' season). lol He left the car and walked on down the road to home cause DH says he's not cranking the tractor 'til morn. DH says he's in the middle of a good book, "The Almost Moon", by Alice Seabolt, about a woman who kills her mother. He thought it would be a relaxing read after the day.

Well, so much for country life in the slow lane. The pump guy did show up late this afternoon and we now have water.

Giving thanks for the things that are important (like being able to flush the toilet).
Laurel

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

It just gets better and better. I'm laughin like crazy picturing all these events.
Re: relaxing read.... heehee

Amen for flush toilets.

I'll dream about swarms of bees now.

Still laughing.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

(snicker) la la la there are one or two good things about living in the city - well, OK, one. Happy water Laurel, and Happy Birthday Harper.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Harper, that oil tank is nifty. I guess a truck comes with a hose and fills it up? Some people out here in the country use propane, but we have always used natural gas and electric in the city. It might take me some time to get the tile photo. DH has the project somewhere, but where? If he can't find it I'll ask the renter's permission.

Sherrie, I'm not going to fire DH because he actually did bail the cistern and it did have the world's biggest salamander in it. The bee guy is really sweet (and probably sober), but he works nights and is glazed from lack of sleep. He left here the first day and called two hours later to say he had left his smoker burning on the deck. :) I can't be to hard on anyone as long as the toilet has water and I can shower after coming in from the garden on these 95 degree days.

The bee guy got another neighbor to come down early with a giant tractor that's much more powerful than mine. I didn't realize he had driven a big flat bed truck with dozens of bags of Sakrete on it. The damage to the fence is pretty bad. Three sections and three or four posts. We had just dragged the road a month ago and it looks like a mine field where he got stuck. So here are some pics....

Bee guy's truck. BTW, bee guy is supposed to come back again to try to collect the bees, but they are not in the hive! They are in a giant ball in the tree next to the one he cut down yesterday. May need to call Georgia Pacific to come cut down all our trees this week. Anyway, bee guy said they'd go in the hive unless we had a thunder storm. Well, they were going in all day and it started thundering about an hour ago. I think we need to be moving on to plan E here. Oh, and when this started, I had Italian bees, but now we have native bees AND German bees and they are fighting! We've got a veritable bee war going on around our house. He says bees smell the honey and hive disturbance within ten miles. They'll duke it out over the hive and the best bees will win. I doubt it as the bees are drinking all the sugar water he's mixing and flying off into the woods. lol Obviously the mason is getting a little ticked about not being able to start and would be happy to throw a bag of 10% Sevin over the whole chimney and call it a day.

Laurel, guess your fence didn't see the bee guy's lic. plate, cuz if it had it would have mooooved over. Now I'm really laughing!!! Please keep us posted. This is better than TV anyday.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Jan, actually I didn't want to bore you with an overload of what is a typical day in the life, BUT, since you commented, here's the rear end. I asked the bee guy, "So, are we having fun yet?"

Harper, thanks for sharing your BD. I must owe you a cake by now (or at least some biscotti by October).

It's a party. Everyone's invited on my BD thread! Can I still have the cake?

I love the pics, bumper stickers and stories!
