Well from what I know and have seen I would say Cocoa is more of the Southern Bell tom boy style which is probably why we hit it off ...I like to get down and dirty in the yard too and that is meant in the gardening sense ....figure I better say that or mama will come up with something to say on that ..... LOL..and yes we do have to hear of the high school days mama.
Tabitha as for trying to grow something you haven't before ....it is a trail and error ....I do "homework" searching online for info on it then try the methods suggested and go from there...
Central Texas Near I-45 Trade List June 8th RU 2nd Thread
gathering eggs and picking berries ...oooo yummy and fun LOL
Anyone desiring more berries than I bring, should bring a long sleeved shirt and boots. I will show you the way to the berry patch.
They are doggone hard to pick, because I being the dummy that I am didn't plant them right.
They were planted too close together and I just haven't had the time to redo them yet.
It is worth the effort (that my dh) puts in to pick them. They shore make a goood cobbler!!
Charlene
Charlene.. is that what you are bringing to the ru.. a cobbler.... full of ooy gooy buttery sweetness?? Mmmmm don't that sound good ya'll??.. ...hehe.... you scared of a little sticker ???? Heck.. I guess I am like Mibus... been there done that... and I love to get dirty...lol
Anyone want blackberries.. I am picking??!!
Yeah mibus you better watch it cause mama can make something out of what you say that you never dreamed about!!lol
I'll sure pick some.. heck I had raspberries back in Illinois that were there when I got the place and the owners had done nothing but let weeds grow up in them so I took the job of going through and cleaning them out so stickers don't bother me I have long sleeves and jeans and boots ....diggin in the dirt, pull weeds, walkin the beans and cuttin theweeds out( an Illinois thing in the soybean fields), runnin the tiller, measuring cuttin and hangin drywall, muddin and sandin.
changin the oil, rotating tires, in my car ...to think of a few things LOL
and as for mama and turning things around best watch out get me on a roll and I can do a dang good job at it too along with coming up with some good poems .....
Okay, I have lost interest in "it." I wanna know what my surprise from Barbara is.
Mums? :)
Charlene, I will pick blackberries. Nobody loves them more than I do! I really wish I could plant some. Just not enough room on this postage-stamp lot.
Maybe one day.
I keep meaning to ask you again about the colocasia cuculotta I got from you last fall. Did you tell me you grow it in full sun? Did I really hear that right?
It grows in full sun for me and in mostly shade for me. Either way works just fine. You will be having babies from it soon, I am sure of it. I started mine out from two tiny little starts that I pulled up at my DS house. Now I have plenty to enjoy and I rescue the babies to share.
Here's the DG link for it:

Charlene
Oh, wow, PF says it's evergreen! Is it for you?
Pbtxlady, it dies down to the ground for me. It comes back reasonably early though.
Charlene
Blackberries and fresh eggs? I am in!
:)
patti, it's not mums. you're going to want it....i think. what if i got you something you don't want...like a puppy? one year i did do that for my grandpa e.v. adams. i thought he needed company. never dawned on me that an animal was not a "good gift" to give someone. wish yall coulda' seen his face.
now i'm never vulgar. well i'm not ever vulgar on daves. i did send a neck-id picture of hillary duff once though. won't be doing that again but only because i have forgotten how. remember that beck? weren't you there?
mama... you spect me to remember?? seems like I do.. but you don't even know how to be vulgar!! You are just TOOOOO SWEET .... hehehehe you had a GP Adams?? I was married to an adams.. my kids are adams.. we might be kin..huh?? LOL
Cocoa... yeah... watch the coffe early in the morning..lol
I went digging yesterday... I got 2 gardenias and a Haw tree. The gardenias limb broke and I got several babies that rooted, and the Haw is about 12"... don't know what kind.. just that it isn't a mayhaw.. I think it's parsley. Anybody... for takers??
But Barb, don't you know I like mums too? :) The ones you gave me are about to bloom. Looks like they're going to be pinkish. Maybe we can ID them when they open.
well i am disappointed in those mums right now. the colors are sort of not what i expected. but i am going to say that they are just stunted this spring and hopefully by this fall they will be o.k. so far though the colors are NOT the same as what faribault pictured and i am soooooooooooo mad. and no, i thought you just took those mums because you felt sorry for me. i knew cocoa didn't particularly like them. i wanted to change her mind with these but so far they all look the same. lol.
Beck, if you have a Parsley Hawthorn I would love to have one.
Josephine.
Josephine.. you were the one I had in mind when I dug it!!! lol It is yours!
Mibis.. way back up there you said in other words you are an all around "handy.. woman".. well I could hire you for a couple weeks this summer.. need a job???lol
I'll probably have some blueberries too if anybody want some...
Oh, yes, whenever I feel sorry for someone, that's what I do--take their mums. LOL!
Mine aren't stunted, but they do need to be pinched so they'll branch out. I've been waiting for the two with buds to open up before I start cutting off their little heads. :)
Thank you Beck, please check my list again and see if I have something you want.
Josephine.. just surprise me with something pretty.... I love all plants, just don't know all the names..lol
Gardenias & blueberries???? I love gardenias if no one else whats it I'll take it, but I think I am already getting blueberries.
Beck what did ya have in mind??? LOL
Wow....I haven't checked this in a little while and now I think I'm lost! I'll be going over things this weekend to see what else I have to offer. Right now I am dealing with something eating my plants down to nubs....I am at my wits end! I am blaming grasshoppers but now I am not sure whether that's correct. I planted a nice persian shield a week ago, and now it's 2 in high thanks to whatever devoured it. Urrrrrgggghhhh!
Kim
MIBUS.. noooo you are getting BLACK berries. from Charlene.. mine are blue...lol... Maybe you'll get a taste of the bushes you will be planting.. I must have missed something.... what do I have in mind??? I saw on your website you have 2.. I bet we have 20.. And you can have the gardenias too
Kim,
I am having a prob with the bugs also. I made up a concoction to spray with if it will stay cool enough in the morning for me to spray. I figure, I'll kill'em or cure'em. I put in some garlic, ,some paprika, some dish soap, some fishy stuff, some epsom salts and a dab of ammonia, oh and some tea tree oil. I will put a dab of it into my sprayer and a gallon of water and go for it tomorrow morning early.
I did this last year and it worked great.
The strange thing this year is that the bugs started off on the blackberries and they don't seem to be bothering the berries anymore. Maybe, I planted them so close together even the bugs are too crowded. LOL
Charlene
Oh....my fear is that I am passed spraying...but I will be giving it a try this weekend when I have a chance to get to the store. I don't want to spray poisons unless absolutely necessary because I want the beneficials and butterflies...just not the critter gobbling up my plants! Lol...
Beck back up in Post #5022012 you said
"Mibis.. way back up there you said in other words you are an all around "handy.. woman".. well I could hire you for a couple weeks this summer.. need a job???lol
I'll probably have some blueberries too if anybody want some..."
so that is what I was asking what you had in mind and I wasn't sure if you meant berries or if you were talking plants.. the two I do have have a total of maybe 12 berries that are still green on them., but if you have spare berries I would love some I can eat them by the handfuls ...LOL
No poisons for me either. That's why I mix up a homemade solution.
You would be surprised how far a plant can come back after it has been eaten down to the nub.
Cows ate our corn twice one year and we still had a crop of corn in spite of it. That was a long time ago. I was big pregnant and out chasing cows with a stick. My mother was with me and she was scared of the cows and scared I would get hurt. I was just mad at the darned neighbor for letting his cows get into my corn two doggone times. I was too angry to realize how scared mom was. After it was over we both laughed 'til I nearly wet my britches. LOL
Charlene
Okay, I had a little (little!) time today and I'm finally starting to get a handle on what I might have to bring.
Toad lilies: a couple of plain old tricyrtis hirta, and a couple of Amethystina/Blue Wonder/whatever they really are. Blue flowers from August till freeze. If you're willing to go with small plants, I can do cuttings. They root very fast this time of year.
- Beck
Yarrow: I can do a couple of small divisions of Cerise Queen and one of Pomegranate.
- Kim
Pavonia: multiple seedlings coming up.
- beck
- charlene
White/red salvia: labeled "Strawberry Sundae" but I think it's actually just a knockoff of "Hot Lips." Note: these will be unrooted cuttings since I can
NOT root salvias to save my life. One of the parent plants is promised to Sylvia, but there's plenty to cut.
- beck
Nepeta 'Walker's Low': I have one large plant I'm digging up to make room for something else. Can take unlimited cuttings, which will bloom next spring.
White/yellow garden mums: noid, just spreads I dug up at my parents' house.
Coneflowers: any number
- blueeyes
Creeping sedums (gold moss, dragon's blood, a couple of noids)
- mamajack
Coleus: Electric Lime, Dappled Apple, Silk Sunset, Hot Lava, Sungold Yellow, Florida Sun Rose (only a couple), Wizard Velvet Red, maybe Alabama Sunset, maybe Golda. These are small because they've been grown from tip cuttings, but they should take off when planted in the ground. LOL--well, not Electric Lime. That one seems to take off no matter what you do to it. I grow it with red impatiens. I grow Dappled Apple with salmon impatiens.
- mamajack
- blueeyes
Ruellia: Katie's Blue (dwarf), Chi-chi (medium, pink). These spread, but at least they don't throw seeds everywhere like the tall purple ones. I need advance notice on these because they wilt for a week or so when dug.
Brugmansia, peach versicolor, just one (gone).
- Mibus

pbtxlady.. I would love a toad lily and blue wonder ... a pavonia, and a cutting of the salvia.. I want to try to root that..lol
look at my trade list..please
I am also adding 2.... Datura tiny seedlings.. Great White w/ purple specks. Just large enough that I am potting up tomorrow, and start hardening off.
MAMA.. theres your brug!!
PBTxlady is now linked to the trades links. Pb, may I have a trade of the Pavonia?
Beck, I would love one of your datura seedlings. LMK if anyone wants cuttings of the Blackberries. We can take them fresh just before you leave or I can bring them to the community center if you want them. They blackberries have thorns, but the berries are huge!
Charlene
Got you down, Beck, and you too, Charlene, for the rock rose.
patti and sylvia.........i want any ground cover sedum you want to get rid of. and patti bring me a knockout coleus. and i have a surprise for you.
and patti, are you giving my mums away? lol.
No, these aren't yours! I wouldn't give those away. They're generic garden mums from my parents' house. You know, the kind you wouldn't offer in your coop (LOL).
And yes, I'll save you some gorgeous coleus!
what about the ground sedums? you didn't say anything about the ground sedums. snicker. how do you act when you get a surprise?
Charlene... ok.. the dat is yours..lol
mibus... I forgot to add this to you a while ago.... I meant since you are sooo handy I could hire you to help me around here... and then I left a space between talking to you and asking if anyone wanted blueberries... meaning anyone..lol, but I still want YOU to help me around here.. LOL
Mibus..... I am bringing you blueberries to "eat"..lol and "plants" to plant from ME!! lol Yeah.. I know about the 12 blueberries. They don't put out as much until they get a little older. Thats why we have about 20!!
Charlene.. " waving hand as far as I can reach.. and if you don't see that one I have the other hand way up there too.. WAVING" ..I want some blackberry cuttings.... ( I know... I'LL BE CUTTING THEM!!!!! ) ROTFL
OK... I am sneaking out of here before I get into trouble.....
Oh, I have all the groundcover sedums you could want. How big an area are you trying to fill?
Beck I think you are about 2 hours away from me ..not sure didn't look it up on mapquest but if ya really really want help the only thing I have going on so far this summer is cleaning an apartment every other week for a girl that works with my daughter and maybe a small house to do once a month. and with gas prices you might have to pitch a tent for me to sleep in ....hahahahaha
pbtxlady if no one asks for the brug I would gladly take it I only have one ...I was given a pink one but for some reason it is gone no idea what happened one day it was there putting out new leaves and the next it was totally gone
I make note here if y'all have extra and want to get rid of it instead of the compost pile I'll take it since DH has all the weeds gone I can now see where the shade and sun are during the day and can put stuff out back around the trees and fence lines.
Phyllis
pbtxlady....I would love some coneflowers and yarrow. I got some yarrow at one time and was told they were cerise queen but they opened up white. Not that I mind, but I would like the cerise queen too....and the other one sounds nice but I've not seen that one before. Also, do any of your coleus grow with some sun exposure? I love coleus but the only space I have left gets sun at least part of the day.
I've still got incense passionvine popping up in my yard and my veggie bed and will dig up some more this weekend. I can take cuttings of various salvias if anyone wants some. I can also take some cuttings from my pink favorite brug as he is now nice and big....blooms pink all summer long. I have others but they are a little smaller and none of them even have buds yet. I've also got a rose of sharon that was given to me but I do not have a place for it as I rent and have a small backyard. It is looking a little rough but is recovering now, got a little dry one time. Also some rooted caerulea passionvine, stays green all winter, blooms like mad blue and white blooms. I could take a million cuttings. Still need to see what else is out there...
:) Kim
