Central Texas Near I-45 Trade List June 8th RU 2nd Thread
mamajack....I'd love some scarlet milkweed! My plants are looking rough as well even though I keep watering them. It's just a bit too hot for them....and me!
:) Kim
i have a few small ones in a cup already that have perked up. others are not doing so well. the root beer plant has completely wilted and unless it comes back from the roots it's a goner. i will look for some bigger ones and try to get them into a cup tomorrow. good grief i am not done getting my plants together. why do i do this?
Some of mine don't look too good either, so at least we are all in the same boat. The main thing for me is getting to meet all of you, and the plants are an added bonus!! We are going to have FUN...... LOL And EAT..... we sure are going to have a lot of goodies... mnnnnn. can't wait
I see that mibus has NOT listed any toffee goodies yet... I am an indian giver..... NO TOFFEE....NOOOOOOO PLANTS...... hehehe
Panic.....Me too Barb! I just realized we are close to swap and I have group, dug, or labeled anything. Guess I know what I will be doing tomorrow!
I am going shopping yet this week to get my ingredients to make the stuff to bring silly girl. today was the last day of school.
am I not suppose to make this stuff for the food to eat? is this suppose to be for trades? LOL
Kim I forgot to address the milkweed plea......
I have just set out a whole bunch of seedlings. I don't have Monarchs around for now. Had only four earlier this year and the cold weather hit and pushed them your way I guess.
I will bring you one small established plant and about 6 or 8 seedlings. Do you need some seeds MW or WPV?
Sheila_FW
I've got seeds for milkweed but I need to plant them yet. Just been busy...as usual. Wooly pipevine would be great. Do you know if pipevine swallowtail cats will eat aristolochia triloba? I have one that is just getting going, but wasn't sure if they would eat it or not.
Thanks! Kim
Sheila... you are ahead of me.. I haven't labeled anything......
mibus.... mibus...... just threatening you...... as long as I get the first bite.. then I will share..lol Soo now you are off work for the summer... yippee.... I don't know how you girls make it... working all week!
mama... I haven't heard from Charlene... hope everything is alright for all of them...
sheila, is this wooly pipevine hardy in these parts?
Mama...Wooly Pipevine is a native and hardy from what I read. Debnes gave me my first seeds this last year so I don't know how they will fair for me.
Beck...I don't have anything done, how can I be ahead! LOL!
Kim.... All I read on the PVST it says their larval host plants are the Aristolochia family. But on the threads somewhere there was a mention of the cats on one of the pipevine species dying. You might pose the question on the Hummingbird and Butterfly Forum for your answer. I will share some of the Wooly Pipevine seeds from Deb with you. Chances of having Pipevine Swallowtails is much better in your area than up here.
Hello everyone!! I'm back. A bit exhausted, but present and accounted for at least.
Mom is doing "okay". Her doctor gave her something to take for her nerves to help keep her on an even keel during this time.
We had a "viewing" in Orange on Monday, a funeral service on Tuesday in Orange. Wednesday we had a "viewing" in Glenmora, La. and a graveside service at the final resting place at 5:00 p.m. near Alexandria, La. All of this was very tiring for the young and strong and extremely hard on my dear sweet mother.
Mom didn't want to come home with me because she felt Eddie's daughter would need her, so I left her at home last night and made the long drive home. We got here around 2:00 a.m.
Eddie's daughter, Anne, was so nice to my mom. She treated her as if she were her own mom.
Eddied and mom had each been married to their spouses for (him) 52 and (her) 40 years until their passing. They never chose to get married to each other, but loved each other deeply until his passing. They traveled everywhere as Eddie was Lt. Gov of Kiwanis for Texas/Okla. Eddie always saw that they had an escort so that there was always another "lady" to share a room with mom. He treated my mom like a queen and she will miss him dearly. Mom has been at his side almost constantly for the last year during his illness.
Okay enough of that, I just wanted to catch everyone up to speed on my absence so you would understand my neglecting our forums.
A great big thanks to you Sheila for all of your work I really appreciate it.
I was thinking that instead of collecting money to pay for the reservation we might try something different. I wondered if we could each bring an extra special plant (one that is very large or in full bloom or just dressed up nice). We could make a game of it by playing something like a cakewalk. We could collect a dollar per walk until we collect our reservation fee and then just do it for fun after that. So, everyone would get to have fun while we were paying our way and get a chance at a nice plant in the process.
Whadya think?
As for the prize table, yes! I have only been to two RU's and both time Josephine and Frank handled the prize table. I would love to have it done that way again. Just bring something you yourself would like to receive and don't go overboard and don't be stingy! Make it, or dig it, or buy it if you must, but make it related to gardening please.
So, if we do both of the above you would need to bring a prize for the prize table and a special plant for the "plant walk".
I think the kids would enjoy the plant walk and it would be more fun than just giving a donation. It always seems to be that there is left over money and in this event we could just stop collecting when we reach our goal.
LMK what ya'll think.
Charlene (glad to be home)
Sounds like a great fun thing to do Charlene! I say yes to the cake walk.
I was glad to be of help while you were away. Hate to have you go through all of that just before the weekend swap, but maybe it will help get your mind off of the family loss for a little while.
Hello Charlene, glad to have you back. I like the idea of the cake walk, but am not sure if you want us to bring special plant for each person, or one special plant per group. Please let me know.
Josephine.
Only the member in each party should just bring one plant for the plant walk.
For the prize table every person in attendance should bring a prize to trade.
Charlene
If we only have 15 members attending and each one brings a special plant for the plant walk, we'll have plenty. We'll make 10 spaces on each walk to fill before beginning the walk and we'll only have to pay 10 times and we'll be done with the fund-raising. Anymore plants left will be awarded for free. Everyone can walk for free after the money for the rent is raised.
We'll show which plant is being walked for each time before we start and then you will know what you are putting your dollar on a one out of ten chance to win.
We'll put Josephine and Frank in charge if they want to do it. They seem to have a knack for that sort of thing.
Charlene
That is fine Charlene, we can do it, but first you will have to show me how, I have never done a cake walk.
Cocoa, who says no shoving? I was at our church's fall festival and I had a six year old try to push me off my number when they called it out. LOL She was so cute, I gave her the cake that I won anyway. Her momma was a bit embarrassed, because the music had stopped and the number was called and of course all eyes were on the "number" which is where the action was taking place. The little "angel" had both hands on my hips and was pushing with all her might. Everyone laughed. I acted like I had gotten on the wrong number and "let" her win. What else could I do?
Charlene
If you don't happen to have a "special" plant, it could be anything that is just a tad nicer than our usual prize table prizes.
Just bring something that you, yourself would want to take a chance on winning.
Just don't go out and buy something or that might wind up costing more than dividing the cost and just paying cash. Most of us have something around the house that would be great for this plant walk.
I am bringing a nice big water oak tree "quercus Nigra" that is potted and very nice and tall so it should make shade within a few short years. No, cost to me, but worth a lot if you want quick shade.
That is the kind of things I had in mind.
Someone else may have a great talent for painting and paint an inexpensive pot to make it look awesome. Or you might make a planter out of "whatever".
You may have a talent for making a wonderful thing for our climbing vines that you could make out of scraps. Hint, hint, that'd be where my dollar would go!
You might have an old piece of yard art that others love but you don't love so much. My DH hates my old antique irons and shoe lasts that I put out in the yard. I love them.
(Nope, I'm not putting them in the plant walk Becky, put your hand down!!)
Just keep it simple and fun and most of all inexpensive in cost but valuable in ownership.
Charlene
charlene ... those might not ever make it to RU... somebody might steal them.... you never know about people these days..ROF
Beck, you better watch out, I'll have you singing since I just realized I don't have a portable cd player. I'll point and say sing Becky, sing and you'll have to sing 'til I say stop! Then we'll draw a number to see who is on the lucky number. It can't be you, cuz you will be the singer. Ha ha ha ha ha!
If anyone has a portable cd player, I have plenty of George and Twitty and Lord knows who else that can sing for us (instead of Beck). Please bring a cd player someone, I don't know if Beck can carry a tune in a bucket or not. We might all pay to keep her quiet!!!
you'll never know....hehehehe
but PLEASE somebody bring her something to play music on!!!!!!!!!
Kim, I have a few Butterfly Weed Seedlings I am bringing too. Also, the buds on my yarrow that I have and thought I shared with you last year are turning pink. Yay!! It's not white after all. I wish I knew if I did give some to you.
I updated my trade list. Now I just have to finish labeling.
well gee I'll try to remember to grab my portable dvd player it plays cd's too but I think making becky sing would be good and I MIGHT help her if she can't carry a tune by singing in her ear LOL
Thanks sweezel....as many eggs as I have been finding they are going to be eating me out of house and home pretty soon!
I am not sure whether I have anything that will qualify for the plant walk...but I will check and see.
I still need to get everything together....guess what I'll be doing Sat!
:) Kim
Geeze! I have a hard enough time trying to find something to swap that anyone would want ... and you want something special/?? lol
Kim, don't worry if you don't have anything. I doubt if we will come up too short. If we do, we'll just pass the plate. I doubt that we'll need to do that though.
Maybe if a person doesn't have one big hoorah type of thing for the walk, they could make up a basket or a box with little goodies that equal a big goody.
Just a thought.
Charlene
Sylvia and Kim, you guys are making me feel bad. I just thought a cake walk type of game might be fun and a little different from collecting money straight out.
If everyone doesn't bring something and we don't have enough, we'll walk with what we have and pass the plate for the rest.
This is supposed to be fun so please don't anyone stress over it.
Remember the KISS rule. Keep it simple silly!
Charlene
I have something... I bring it to every Swap and forget to give it away...even took it to Iowa. lol
Now, I think that one deserves a guess. It is not likely a plant since you keep hauling it around. hmmm maybe it's....a smile, nope you always give that away. Maybe, it's ..... a ... gosh, I just can't figure what is "special" that you haul around and is so inconspicuous that you forget to give it away.
Got me stumped!
Any guesses out there?
mibus... since I am older... I request you sing in my place....hehe
Charlene... Thats what I did... made a goody bag, cause I am about planted out ......
It would be nice to have some TOFFEE for the "cake walk"..... you know gardeners have to eat
Sylvia... everything you have is special.... bring what ever you have. I guarantee someone will be tickled to receive it!!
it doesn't have to be plants or plant related does it for the cakewalk thingy?
LOL
just trying to think of what I have to bring for it
Hey Beck...AGE before beauty ...hahahahahahahaha so you can do it.
mibus.... I am sitting...... and picking my feet up......... Cause it's getting DEEP in here......LOL
Mibus, does your player work on batteries, or is there outlets there?
(please...please)
I will start charging it today so it will work for about 2 -3 hours without being plugged in but I'll bring the plug in just incase and the adapter for the car for charging and using....but I'm bringing it so Becky doesn't have to sing off key it's not for the cakewalk gift LOL
mmmm Beck you got quick sand over there??????? I'm barefoot and love the feel of mud in bare feet ...hahahahaha
mibus... girl.. I am just like you.... love sand on my bare feet..lol, and we do have quick sand.. but not on my property..lol
there should be electricity at the community building..... but you go ahead and "charge them batteries"..while you are making me my toffee....LOL
Maybe we should have some 25 cent rounds for those of us that don't have a big "special" plant that doesn't look wilted. Just an idea for those who might be "stressing." I found a brass pot in the yard this morning...would that count as a 25 cent cakewalk prize???
Tabitha
Tab, you are worrying too much! This is supposed to have been a fun idea. I didn't want anyone stressing over it. Whatever anyone brings is fine. If something is held up and no one gets in line for the walk, we'll add something to it. No big deal!!
Please stop stressing, you guys are making me stress! Take a breath and breath in the fresh air when you get out here. That's worth 25cents at least. Nothing around here to pollute but the cows with their methane poots.
If you don't enjoy this cakewalk thingy we have failed to make it fun and I will be mad at myself for thinking it was a good idea.
So, come on folks, just come and have fun, no worries!
Charlene
