Blooming in May

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

rednyr ~Thankyou! I had placed that same photo on another site and everyone had seemed to pick out that same picture saying how they love the raindrops on it. ( I love the raindrops/dew on pics too)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Trent, they are generally slow to start and it has been so dry this year. I do have a lot of hedychiums up but few other gingers.

I just went an looked and I do have a shoot on some pinecones. Your's will show up soon, I am sure.

Tropic--that red flower you posted is Freesia laxa, and the spots of color are quite easy to explain. You say you got those from Tom? Those are definitely not the seeds you started this year, right?

I'm sure it was watering/misting in the heat after paying more attention now..should have occured to me because I haven't even sparyed much with soap lately...luckily haven't really seen bugs.

I wish I was good enough to get those seeds to flower already, those were given to me by Tom, who is such an awesome guy. He got them from yucca do awihle back, they're more coral colored than the red anomatheca (trying to spell it right this time) that PDN offers. Not sure how hardy it will be, but I do plan to try some outside

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

accepted terminology for the last 30 years is Freesia laxa, and they are hardy to 8b

I know Wade over at yuccado real well, yuccado is about 15 miles from me as the crow flies.

we need to take this discussion to dmail
=)

My hedychiums are up, too. My husband says, "Are you growing corn?"

The costus speciosa is looking pretty good (so far)- I've not grown it before. I can't remember where I've planted the other gingers... I'm sure no one else does that. ;*> Sigh. Oh well, it will be a surprise, or not.

oh Jenny pullease....I you are not alone!!! I plant stuff all the time and then forget what it was and where it was LOL I am glad we are having this Freesia discussion with pics cause I had alot of them bloom and I was thinking...what the heck did I plant ...now that they are gone I wish I had taken more pics of them.... LOL I am assuming these are Freesia...someone chime in if not....

Gingers are especially bad for coming up late, you think they must have bit the dust so you plant something else in that precious spot and when you are not looking the ginger pops up and swallows the newbie.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Just had some ginger pop up, thanks Alice. That log you gave me was cut into about 6 pieces and a couple are showing life.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

ok thanks... they are in kind of dry-ish places, so that may slow them too

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

is nothing blooming?

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Here's a couple pictures. I forget about this plant 'til it blooms. It's Husker Red Penstemon.

I just got dl Buttered Popcorn this spring. Hope mine looks at least one-tenth as good as yours! It's gorgeous!

Debinsc,
Any storm problems your way?

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Hi Lussah: We had a heck of a t-storm come through around 6. Complete with hail. The dogs did not like hail. :)
Here's a pic.
You?

Nope. Glad that's all you got, considering all the tornado warnings going off on my weather radio. That storm passed a little south of me. I only had a light sprinkle, but the night's not over.

HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!!!! It's ugly here right now. The skies have opened up! Thunder, lightening and hail!

The storm is moving a little north of us. We are under a tornado watch too but the radar shows the weather going right through Jenny's house and heading east to Bennett's Point and across to Edisto. I can see non stop lightening in that direction. So far we haven't had a drop of the wet stuff; it is just hot and windy.

Jenny and Deb, hope you both and your plants made out OK with all that hail.

Weeess need some rain down here. My lagoon is dropping by the day and the plants are all showing it. My grass took a beating last year and I really need to get some rain so it will fill back in. More like a good month of rain.

Salty people we're over due for some serious rain, wonder if this will be a big hurricane year?

Diehard you'll enjoy the panic that goes along with hurricanes and unseasoned residents. LOL.

Remember if possible go South and West, hurricanes don't turn around usually.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah i like that kind of stuff... as long as they arent too bad!!

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Bordersandjacks, Nice photos! DebinSC, Really love that bracteantha picture! Happy to hear that everyones ok through this storm, Didn't get much at all here besides a few sprinkles.

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

diehrdsouthrnr, Me too! I could definately be a storm chaser lol!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

You don't chase a hurricane. You know where and when it's coming. Feeder bands are something you have to see to really get a good feeling for. LOL. You reallt only need about 3 hours to leave but i everyone waited you would never get away in time. We had an evacuation on a 4th the July week and there was about 100,000 people on Hilton head. One way out, 278. 8 hour traffic jam at least. Not a room all the way to Altanta.

The biggest problem is the amount of stuff that comes out of the trees. There's no snow or ice here so you get a lot of built up debris and when the wind is blowing all that stuff comes flying out. Lots of limbs, pine cones, leaves everywhere.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yah especially with all these twiste live oaks... also the palm leaves really catch the wind and if they fall off can be quite sharp and kinda heavy (and dont forget about those old infloresences they have)... especially those mexican fan palms... those teeth are dangerous

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

CoreHHI, I should have mentioned small storms when I said storm chaser, I wouldn't want to do it if it was something of major size lol!
Sounds like your last 4th of july week wasn't too much fun at all, Glad you got out safe though!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Iris that was years ago. We haven't had a hurricane come close in a while. That fourth of July I stayed and had a generator so we had a party with about 6 of my friends who lived on the beach. I'm a little higher so we have more time at my house before panic sets in.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah we looked at a map, and i think it said it would take a cat 5 or a stong 4 to get the storm surge up here around Buckwalter

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Big thing is what the tide is doing when the storm surge hits. Low tide and it's no problem unless it's a cat 5.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah.... i'd just rather not have one if its above a moderate cat 2

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

I'm just going to leave this one alone for a while lol ...Got a few pics to share though....

Hurricanes are no fun, I lived thru Hurricane Eva and it was right out of the Wizard of Oz, so many things flying thru the air I was waiting to see the cow! the house next door imploded since they left their house for higher ground and left everything locked up tight...we had no power for thanksgiving and I remember cooking our turkey in a 55 gal, it gave a whole new meaning to living on the windward side of the island LOL one thing about being in a hurricane...it teaches you how to pray again real fast!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Iris that clemtis is awesome!

I lived through Hugo and was, at the time, living well inland in Northeast Columbia. Some storms just don't follow a pattern; it skirted us and went right on up to Charlotte where it did tons of damage. If you look at the flood prediction maps it shows we will all be under water if the time and tides are right for it.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

oh pooh... well at least wedon't get too many
