The Real Deal Thread for April Blooms

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I got the funniest dmail from wildskygal saying, "Sniff! Sniff! I can't find the hyperlink"
We have so many bloom threads going for April, let's , if we can, just start a new thread for the poor lost souls on DG (LOL)

I will find a picture to start it with Rob's Antique Rose, a semi mini

Hey, my nose is getting better!!!!! I found it. Yeah... thanks for telling me about the solo cups. Now that is my speed! I have some french doors going to the back yard that I have been sprouting my garden plants in front of. I think it will be great for my AV's and their relatives, the Gesneriads, when I get any. I have been drooling over all those pictures and of the hoyas too. It's almost like having a greenhouse! I feel like I will be fixing up a nursery, only instead of pink or blue, it will be pink, blue, red, yellow, white, varigated...you get the idea!!! (yes folks, I am just a bit excited. :=)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, indeed you will get addicted like the rest of us. I bought my first african violet a year ago in January at Walmart and I have been 'hooked' ever since. Now I have all kinds of cousins to the african violet!

I have to find a picture to post.

This is a no named one(semi mini) that I just keep sticking leaves on

Ok, I'll come play on the new thread! Welcome to the AV forum wildskygal! Your going to love it here. ^_^

This isn't the best picture of my Summer Carnival AV but I believe this is the most blooms I've ever had on one violet!! The range of yellows, pinks and lavenders is very pretty! One of them even looks a bit like a pink pin wheel!

A close up of little Dibley's Crystal Ice. I'd like to get some more streps that are this small size. I'd appreciate any recommendations??

I am sooooooooo jealous of your blooms, Brenda! Wow, I even saw that gorgeous Silverglades to the side. I am actually going to order a real av that is marked Summer Carnival. The leaves I start never make a pretty plant.
I am going straight to Rob's and Lyndon Lyons tonight!

The reason I started this new thread is people were getting so confused and one of the threads is not available to people with dial up..............has more than 200 posts on it. Jannich and others have dial up and she says she can't even access these .

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just read that you went to Garden Angel on ebay for this plant.

(Zone 1)

LOL Wildskygal! You are going to have a beautiful baby nursery! All colors of the rainbow!

Gail: Is that the purple semi mini that was our favorite last year? You had sent me one but it is one that bit the dust with so many others. Prettiest little Purple AV ever!

Brenda: "Summer Carnival" is Wonderful! I have never seen an AV like that with all those colors on one plant ... didn't even know there was such a thing! Beautiful!

The very first Strep I ever had was one I got from Starfly/Eunice last year named Dilbey's Gwen and it was small but oh so pretty ... looked like your Crystal Ice only had light blue and white blooms. I love the look of Streps but some are so HUGE like some of the Chirita's and I am soo limited on space! And, so far they haven't liked me for very long!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I have grown her over and over so I am sure I sent her to you and she was one of the unnamed ones!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Brenda,
You are more then welcome for the cuttings... This plant grows like a weed here and blooms all summer then also all winter in the house...LOL All your pictures are beautiful....
Hugs,
Susan

(Zone 1)

Yep, Gail ... I thought that was the one!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I was spraying all my avs (did my streps last night) for powdery mildew caused by big differences in night and day temps. (That was about 3 weeks ago and I didn't turn the heater on at night when we had 3 nights straight where the temps dropped and it was 65 in my house)

Look what I found..........going to pot them up in new soil in smaller containers and take good care of them...........

and another one of Summer Carnival.........you can see they are not happy campers

They are planted in too small of a container and the flowers are smushed by the cellophane wrap (LOL)

I am going to start growing all my episicas in these vases. She is putting on more buds.

Thumbnail by gessiegail
(Zone 1)

Ok Gail ... I gotta know the name of that Episcia!! Beautiful!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Sinningia Aurora Borealis is covered in blooms and I can't wait to take a picture! I am dying to start cuttings from all these sinningias.

Lin, I will have so little to sell at the Mother's Day Sale that I will send you (because I forgot some stuff to you anyway) lots of stolons from this one. I will email the lady I bought it from. She is in our club and grows episicas all the time and doesn't grow anything else. She will know the name. There are so many stolons and the blooms are sooooooo red.

I have a lot of these little vases so tomorrow I will start you at least 3 stolons in a vase just like this one.
********edited to say that I was going to really trim her before the sale anyway......

****edited again to say that I get these vases at Hobby Lobby and Walmart for 1.25

Oh, Gail ... that is a beauty! I love all the colors in that foliage! I don't think I've ever seen one so pretty! I would love you to root me one of those even if you can't find out the name! I think that one must be the Pink Patches of Episciadom!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

I'm glad you started the new thread Gail, your right, both of those others were too long for dial up! I'm glad you found those Summer Carnival's! It really is one of the pretty ones! Along with a thousand others. LOL

Hi Susan, glad you followed over! When it warms up enough for me to ship I'm going to reciprocate with some gessies for the Begonias I enjoyed all winter!! I peeled your address label from the box you sent and have it ready to go onto a new box. ^_^

Well if "show quality" AV's are only supposed to have three rows of three leaves each mine are all terribly over grown! They do need to be cut back some but I am the worst at burying the necks so I dread it!!

Lin I'm going to add Dibley's Gwen to my wish list as I would like to get a few more of these smaller ones. I think the beautiful Thumbelina that Gail has posted is one of them too!

Gail that episcia in the round vase is gorgeous, I am going to be taking stolons from mine and trying that vase technique soon!

I harvested a seed pod from Daisy Jane today, her leaves are ugly in this picture but the blooms are pretty!

I have a new one called fernwoods minuet and it is supposed to be a very compact one.It has a bud now and I am waiting ever so impatiently for it to open..LOL...Dibleys Gwen was my very 1st strep..fell in love... and that started it all..I will always grow that one so if you ever want a leaf of minuet or gwen just let me know.....Love the bloom on your Daisy Jane!!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Absolutely beautiful everyone!
Gail, I LOVE that Aurora Borealis :) That is going to be the most beautiful bloom! I can't wait to see it.
All of you certainly can grow!
I LOVE to wake up, pour my coffee and stroll through this garden in the morning. The pictures are just stunning!
I can't wait for my first AV blooms. I am just now separating a few babies from leaves that I put down in February.
I must say, AV babies don't seem to be as fussy as strep babies for me so far :) Not one wilted (yet *lol*).
All of the snow has FINALLY melted and it's been over 60 degrees for a week now! The birds sing every morning and I found my first baby tick *lol*

Thank you all for brightening my morning :)

XO
Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Kim, I am on my first cup of coffee and never wake up this early! I reset the gro lights and I must have made a mistake on the one in my bedroom!! It came on at 6:30 in my face (LOL)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Brenda, I will save you one of Thumbelina........She was so big that when I divided her I got 8 new plants from her. Here she is fully grown (a good 6 months before I divided her)

Thumbnail by gessiegail

Brenda, Dibley's Crystal Ice is just beautiful! And it's a smaller one? That makes it almost perfect! LOL Congrats on your seed pod, too!

Gail, I love Sinn Aurora Borealis! Where did you get it? The Sinn pusillas look great! I knew you'd do fine with them! I found a Thumbelina baby yesterday that I didn't know I had. Time to start pampering it so it will bloom like yours! ^_^

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I said on the other thread that I got all the sinningias from Davesviolets and he did a great job.

I wish I knew a good source (not ebay) for Dibley's, Ogelvee and Thompson streps.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Good Morning Everyone!! Kim..I am so happy to hear your snow is all melted..temps getting warmer..sounds like spring has finally come to Maine..ooo I peeked at our seed project again thismorning and I counted 19 little heads in there.lol...almost visible without my magnifier so I bet now they will really take off...thanks again for sending me some..makes my day checking on their progress..can't wait to post a pic...soon..soon..lol

Gail your thumbelina has so many blooms I can't even count them! Beautiful!! I can't think of any sources right off for any of Dibley's, Ogelvee and Thompson streps except the dreaded.E word..LOL..I am really going to do some serious checking to see if anyone else carrys them.....

Amy isn't it agreat feeling when you find one on your stand you forgot you had.?..gotta love it....

Brenda another compact strep is bristols yumpin yimminy...cute name and its a cutie...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am dying to order something and can't!!!!!!!!!!! I don't even have any space right now. Of course I could quit propagating everything I get my hands on (LOL)

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Gail..you could NEVER quit propagating..lol..looks like you will just need to build more stands..hee hee

I'm right there with you, Gail. It's an almost irresistable urge to order something! And seeing Darth Vader and Aurora Borealis didn't help... LOL Dave's Violets has some awesome Sinns I want, but VB has Darth Vader and a couple Petrocosmeas I want. Ahh, the dilemma... Order from both, one, or none! LOL Oh, and I'm pretty sure I need some more Pings, too. Keeping the Orchids moist has caused me to have gnats... So see, there's a third place I want to order from. I think I need to go take a walk or something! LOL

Grand Prairie, TX

Oh, everyone's pictures are so awesome! That Summer Carnival is just so much fun to look at and Dilbey's Crystal Ice is so delicate looking. Plus the daisy Jane and the Tiny Thumblelena...I can see the handwriting on the wall...build on a room! I bought some seeds for an orchid on (E) that the picture looks just like the one my daughter paid $15 at the grocery store and I get to see it from it's first emergence! I m going to have to stop looking at E though...It is quite addictive and I would hate to have to feed my family my AV's instead of meat and potatoes because I couldn't buy any groceries!!! LOL

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

It's probably near noon for you now but Good Morning Kim!! I am so jealous of your snow being gone and those awesome temps..... As I watch the snow come down so hard that it's almost a white out this morning. One positive is it is a very wet snow and when it melts it should take more of whats already on the ground with it!!

Gail I would love a Thumbelina! She is a darling. Set one of her next to the King of Kings babies for me and ship whenever you aren't busy, well maybe don't wait that long, I think your always busy! ^_^

Nancy I definitely want to trade some leaves with you! I've fallen for this Dibley's and want more plus the other small grower you mentioned having. I'm going to d-mail you the list of what I have that needs a trim!

Are you back from your walk Rain, did you shake off the urge? LOL

Back in November I put leaves down from Petrocosmea Rosettefolia and Forrestii and I'm a bit taken aback by what I'm seeing now. I guess I didn't know what the babies would look like but I did not expect this wild profusion for such a flat growing gessie! I'm going to try to take them apart today and see what I get???

wildskygal....there are so many vendors who are not on ebay and so good. If you want to know any of them, just ask us.

********edited to say, Brenda, I am so impressed that you grew petrocosmea from leaf that I can't believe it!!!!! Keep us posted when you divide them and take pics along the way...

I can't believe I got tired of the three that I had and shipped them off to someone who wanted them..........never even thought of growing a leaf........very impressive.

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Gail your going to get wildskygal in trouble turning her onto to all the great vendors! LOL

AV's for dinner huh? ^_^

Now this is a strange little thing I have going on. I put a leaf down from sininngia Cardinals (looking very sad now) but I'd say this is a strep coming up. I probably planted a few strep seeds that day too and one made it's way over into this pot! ^_^

Brenda..don't panic on the Petrocosmea Rosettefolia ..LOL..believe it or not the babies are supposed to look like that...sorta remind me of a baby octopus...They will flatten later on..heres a pic of one I just removes fom one of the mama leaves Amy sent me last fall..removed a few weeks ago(on the right) compared to one I removed from mama over a month ago( on the left and not the greatest pic but hope you can see the difference in the growth)..lol..I will try and get a better pic later..I am off to unpack 2 big trade boxes that arrived from Gail today...I am on a cloud..and yes definitely I will defonitely love to do a trade with you..I will dmail you my list of what I have a little later...1st things 1st..LOL..I gotta see what gail put in these boxes^_^...back with pics soon....

Is a sininngia Cardinas a strep or what? I am sort of confused because I am just getting started with the AV's however, those plants with the little trumpet shaped flowers are very intriguing. Before I get too far into this I want to get a book so I can study some. I really need to go to the library! I saw on on (E) but it was from 1958 and I figured that was just about an antique!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

wildskygal Av's belong to the gesneriad family and that is a very big family!! So discussions end up being about all kinds of these plants. Sinningias are part of the family as are stretocarpus, chiritas, kohlerias etc etc.

If you go up to the top and look through the sticky that is titled something like "all other gesneriads" you'll see lots of the names and can check out the pictures etc. You'll be hooked on more than AV's in not time ^_^

Thank you Nancy, pictures are truly worth a thousand words in this case!! I'm glad to know I'll end up with some normal looking babies. Are they like violets in that I'm going to have to separate out the babies or do they just send up one baby plant? I know, just go do it and find out for myself instead of playing here. LOL

Gail I'll send you some petrocosmea leaves so you can play with them! Just tell me when as I know your getting ready for the show now.

In the last houseplant swap I was involved in last fall I was sent a cutting of a miniature rose and was told it bloomed a very pale green. The cutting lost almost all it's leaves and suffered so this winter I didn't know what would happen with it but then it perked up and now ... Looky what I found yesterday!! It is indeed the palest of greens.

Brenda, I am jealous of your talents!!! Please tell me how you rooted this miniature rose????????????

The Pet babies I grew from leaf were all crazy, waving their hands in the air, too. LOL Here's a picture of them from a few weeks ago. Two Pet forrestii babies and a Pet rosettifolia (or maybe the other way around). Seems like they took forever to put up a baby, but once it came up, it grew really fast. They calm down and flatten soon after separating them. I got twins from a couple of the leaves, so sometimes you do get more than one baby.

Gail, I've got a Pet forrestii baby I can send you if you want it.
