What have you bought so far?? Pt.5

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

amazing how hungry your critters are

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I did some minor shopping today. I did not get 'Shirazz'...I wanted to, and debated about it, but went instead with something I've wanted for a wee bit longer. Which is the Abies koreana 'Hortsman's Silberlocke.' The garden center that has 'Shirazz' also had the Abies, and I was like....ahhhhhhhhhh...I opted for the Abies.

I also...lol...picked up Delphinium 'Blue Butterfly,' Heuchera 'Frosted Violet,' Heuchera 'Midnight Rose,' (which I bought at Lowe's, of all places!) and Heucherella 'Stoplight.'

I also picked up another cube of Pro Mix BX, and 2 bags of Org. Peat Humus. True Value is having a sale on all of their soil products...The Promix was down almost $5, and the Peat was down almost $3! I almost bought 2 Promix, and a bunch more Peat...but settled for 1 of 1 and 2 of the other...lol.

Here is A. korena 'Hortsman's Silberlocke'

Here is a close up of a branch, to tempt everyone, muahahaha

This is the Heuchera 'Midnight Rose.' I'm not knocking Lowe's, but I'm not used to seeing something this "new" in their perennial selection. The plant was sold in their 1 gallon premium pots, and were something like $8.50 a piece. Thought that Terra Nova just released this 2 years ago...still in shock, I almost skidded out of my Crocs when I spotted this 2 tables away.

Nice fir, Thom. I like the upward branching and blue cast to the needles on that one.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

looks fuller than my garden crossings

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That looks pretty good to me, Allison.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Allison-As long as they do their thing in the garden, doesn't really matter to much.

Victor-I actually used some financial restrain in the purchase of the Fir. They had 3 sizes to choose from. The one I purchased, which is about 3-4' tall, they had a 4-5' selection-$40 more, and then they had 2 that were almost 8' tall...they were a mere $450...lol. I opted for the least expensive, and to me, more full and healthy looking one out of the group.

I have a feeling if I came home with the 8' tall one that Paul would have had a flock of canaries fly from someplace...lol.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Gee, I wonder where!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Well that one grows pretty fast anyway, Thom, so you did the right thing!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I need to pick up more soil for my containers. By the way folks...it's officially spring in my yard...the orioles are back!!! I love listening to them sing

Thomaston, CT

I loved all the new plants--the fir looked sooo fresh, & the azalea is a lovely color, Pix. The only things I planted were achillea, purple tapestry or something purple! I can't remember too much, babysitting definately taking its toll--lol! Grant is STILL in ICU, but he might be in a crib--still in ICU--when they finish the sedation tomorrow. Mom & Dad have been able to hold & feed him--they are thrilled. Heading back up to Goshen in a while--nasty gardening weather, anyway--good shopping weather though--Patti--take lots of pics of your new plants--I hope to get some on soon!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Oh, Anita, lucky you! I've been keeping an ear alert for the Orioles, but not yet!

I went to my local discount garden center yesterday (in the rain) for a few cement stepping slabs, and bought a few annuals for my window box planters that will hang on the metal front-step railings.

I was surprised at this geranium - I've never seen pointed petals before. No tags on them.

Great, Anita. Hope Grant is home soon, Robin.

Received three gaura from Paradise yesterday. Looked fine until I got to the third one. These are described as four inch plants. Well one had been tossed around, despite pretty good packing, and it revealed a tiny plug - one inch at best, with teeny roots. I imagine the other two are the same and I will check. I'll post a photo later. They will be hearing from me.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Somehow I doubt it will be a thank you note.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

One of my gaura survived the winter, sorry about yours Victor.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Onewish so you had to get a couple of beauties right? Nice selections, especially the geranium, love the golden color in the middle of the leaf.
Sue that is a different looking bloom, I have not seen those pointed petals either, very interesting. You all are making me jealous that I have not been able to get to the garden center or nursery yet. I must go soon just to look around of course.
I hope you get some sort of satisfactory response to your complaint Victor. What kind of Gaura did you get? I have tried the pink one twice and they never made it through the winter, the white ones they say do better around this area.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Pink - I like them so much that I'll accept them as annuals, but I want to get what I'm paying for!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Another lilyauction win.

This is 'Westbourne's Wild as a Buck'-the one that I won
The bonus was another of the hybridizers intros: 'Westbourne's Mountain Home'

Those are beautiful. What are the blooms like?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Anita,
The lady who sells Westbourne Daylilies is Mary Jane Meadows...there is a thread about her over in the DL forum called "Please Help" . She recently lost her daughter Theresa and is going through a very rough times. Her DL is what has been her saving grace and keeping her going right now, not to mention it's her livelyhood. I have bought DL from this lady for a few years now and she always send nice fans plus a bonus fan. I can't say enough about this lovely lady!! Check her DL creations out for your self:

Thanks Celeste.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Celeste and Anita-
What I really enjoyed about this exchange from Mary Jane Meadows is several fold, for one, the bid that I won for 'Westbourne's Wild as a Buck' was for 1 fan, she sent 2! Also...if you read the information on her website, she states that she will send a bonus with every order that is 15% of the total of the order. 'Westbourne's Mountain Home' sells for $45/DF on her website, she sent me 3 fans; and the total bid was around $50-60 bucks. So, I bid/win a single fan, and get a double, and the bonus is a triple fan! I will definitely be ordering from her again this season! Even if I don't get the same thing, atleast I know now what to expect for what I actually do pay for! There are several of her 2007 and 2005 intros that I'm highly interested in!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I own :

Westbourne Naught Girl Pet
W. Easter Egg Hunt
W. Storm Cellar
W. Kirby Kids Playtime
W. Birthday For Theresa

I want:
WESTBOURNE MOM'S CINNAMON ROLLS
WESTBOURNE COTTON MOUTH
WESTBOURNE WHIPPERWILL CALL
WESTBOURNE PRETTY MITTENS
WESTBOURNE MOM'S DESIGNER CLOTHES
WESTBOURNE LIVING HIGH ON THE HOG

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I recently received an Oakes cataloge. I was impressed with them as well.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh..from I Oakes I ordered:

Harbor Gate
Siloam French Lace
Royal Palace Prince

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I can't remember what I ordered from Oakes, I never can...lol...I know it was around $300 though...lol.

I still have the AHS voucher to use...haven't decided on where, or to whom, I am going to use the voucher. For those of you not in "the know," anyone joining the AHS-American Hemerocallis Society (fee is $25) there is a voucher program to draw new members in, and to bring back members who have not renewed with AHS. There is a list of vendors, about 30 or so, and everyone of the vendors is different, in regard to voucher amount. Some vendors are letting the voucher go for between $30-50, with you, the buyer just paying shipping and handling. Other vendors you would need to spend "X" amount, but would get "X" amount off of the total order. There are 2 vendors, can't remember who, that are offering a total % off the order for using the voucher.
The nice thing, for me atleast, is some of the hybridizers who I really admire, like the Stamiles, Peats, Petits, and the group from Thoroughbred DL's, are on this voucher program...so, one can almost get one of their brand new intros for 1/2 or more off.
Although some of those intros are not cheap!

Just trying to entice everyone to support the AHS, and help y'all spend your "free" government money...if you haven't already!

I had gone with my nieces to a local extension of the NY Botanical garden. They had dwarf iris there that I absolutely fell in love with. I just ordered these today...

http://www.schreinersgardens.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SIGO&Product_Code=C-08-10MA&Category_Code=COLL

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

The little irises are getting to be some of my favorites, Anita. Mid America has a great selection, also, as does Winterberry Gardens (huge selection). They are addicting.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Anita those are lovely!! I love the small Iris's I have a few, my newest one is from last year called "Forever Blue" .

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Forever Blue is really nice. Mine bloomed last year and my grandaughter latched onto it for her own little garden at home. I told her she better take good care of it, so I can get some back.

A lot of the ones at Winterberry Gardens are 2-3.00 each. Good prices and they always send more than one rhizome.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They look nice. Can always tuck in dwarf plants.

Your Price $39.80 - for one???!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Those are 'dwarf dollars'.

39 and 80% dwarfs?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Special on any 7.

Ok I will go reread now.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That was a joke, Sherrie.
