What have you bought so far?? Pt.5

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Sorry Victor, so far my peony tree is coming back well from last year.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm wondering if I should plant it. They recommended not if it had already broken dormancy, so I did not.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Last fall, early in fall, I actually moved mine twice. I bought it mid summer, and planted it. Didn't like the location, which is a bad habit of mine.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I got two from FW last year. One did not make it through the winter. However, I transplanted one last fall that I had for a couple of years but a weigelia was overpowering it. It immediately dropped all leaves and I thought I had killed it. This spring it leafed out and has three big fat buds, so don't give up hope. Sometimes I think our plants are giving us a con job.
Pirl, don't worry, I get plenty of dirt under my nails. I always scrub up before handling the camera though.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Did you plant them originally in spring or fall, Weeze?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Is a tree peony a graft victor?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Victor, the two I got at FW I bought in the spring. Everything I read said to wait til fall to plant, so I just dropped them in the earth, pot and all ,where they would eventually be planted. The surving one is still in its pot and I dare not touch it now. It has about a half dozen buds and I'd like to see them open. The transplanted one I don't remember but I probably planted it in the spring originally.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I recieved my order from Garden Crossings. Very well packaged. They are out a breathing in the spring air waiting for transplant. Shipping wasn't too bad, but I am wondering if they removed the plastic containers, if it would make a difference. The plant is probably happier that way.

I forgot who mentioned that they didn't have luck with Corydalis, but the one I recieved from Sooner Plant Farm, seems to have bit the big one. It didn't have much of a root ball/system so that was probably it.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Sad to say, the plain old purple tree peony that I had, is no more. Everything else was popping up in the world of Hems Peonies, but no generic tree peony...I looked where it was planted, NOTHING...Then, I went to the roots...

There weren't any...or hardly any. I'm on my way up to Agway to buy the vole/mole pellets. I've never had any problems with anything before, in regard to moles/voles...but, now I do.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i feel your pain.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Seems tree peonies are not so easy. I may bring mine to the extension to see if it is in fact diseased. Anita, that was me with the corydalis. Bought about 10 a couple of years back from GC to use as a ground cover in a part shade area. They were all gone by the fall.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

No luck here with corydalis either. I don't know what the trick is with them but they look good for a minute then are gone, never to return.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Just noticed today that I tried yet another one last fall - Chocolate something. Of course it's dead!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I found out how to navigate through the DG co-ops. There is a Foxfire Hosta Co op going on at the moment. On the plate for me, small order for me, but...

Foxfire Whamm Bamm
Hawkeye
Silver Threads and Gold Needles

Can't wait for the results of the Peony list being gathered!

Thomaston, CT

I never ordered corydalis--it comes up somewhere in my rock walls every year! It is light blue. Picked up herbs today, rununculus, & a nice small-leaved rhodo for my son. It was at WalMart's for $6.39--Olga M. which is a nice pink variety. Grant had a good day, so I splurged.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thom, I'm not familiar with any of those hostas, but what great Names!~

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I wish I had a place for more hostas. Those are so nice, Thom I just don't have much shade. Planning on planting more trees, so in 20 years or so I should have a place for those hostas LOL. btw, I am 20 years and 6 weeks older than my son, and he is just a few weeks short of being 20 years older than his oldest daughter. Makes it easy to remember what year everybody was born.

I asked for shipping on 4/21 from Chamblee's and Lazy S'S's. Got nada this week! What a disappointment. I actually had time to do some planting. I had all my shipping dates staggered so I could (hopefully) keep up. Now I'm probably going to get slammed with everything all at once. My perennials from Fairy's co-op are coming early this week and my order from Palatine Roses should be shipping on Monday.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just returned from my trip to visit sister and buy annuals.
I am waiting for email from her for the name of the Amish Market where we bought plants at really reasonable prices.
The market is north of Interlaken NY and on a back road.
Lots of plants, not a huge variety in any one type but the prices were wonderful.(I'm looking for paks of Snapdragons in all one color) they had the mixed butin different heights 36" and the borders at 8"-10"
I bought Cleome and Cosmos, Million Bells, herbs Galliarda Daisy ,Lobelia .
4packs for$1.89 and 4" pots for around $2.00.I filled 3 cardboard trays and only spent $50.00.
Then we went to a nursery on Route 13 outside of Ithaca near entrance to Treaman State Pk. Early Bird, 2 cardboard trays for the same price as at the Amish Mkt.
Amish is where it's at.
I drove an hour and a half to get there, visit w/ sister was worth it. Dinner at The Woodland Roadhouse on Rt.96 also good to do.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

O K Here is the info on the Amish Mkt.
It's Countryside Produce on Munson Rd.
There is a handwritten sign at the corner of Munson and Rt 96.

Thomaston, CT

Thanks, Jo Ann--I'll ask my niece about it. I saw Grant for the 1st time today--very cute baby, & moving a little, since they are cutting back on his sedation--still in ICU, but doing better. Came home from hospital & planted toad lilies, coneflower, herbs, sidalcea, & lily "Purple Prince".

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good news, Robin! Best of luck with his continued improvement.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll be getting those two cryptomeria this week.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

JoAnn, I was in the same area today, kept an eye out for nurseries, but didn't see any. We drove to Ithaca on rte 89, and back up the other side on rte 34 and rte 90. Pretty drive.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I leave Trumansburg and drive up 96 then drop down to Rt.89 in Interlaken. It's the most beautiful trip right at the Lake edge.
Maybe the Amish don't have the market open on Sunday.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

This is my casch of annuals. Two thirds of them were from the Amish Mkt.
The potted things are my forced Cannas and Caladiums

The other half annuals.
It's a cloudy rainy day. Sorry pics are so dark

Waiting for more rain here too. Hoping for an inch or two. Does anyone know the name of this tree? Always has been called a wild cherry around here but the flowers don't come from the branch they come off a stem. They have a stinky sweet smell that I am not too thrilled with. The fruits are dark blue or black and the birds love them.

buys look good Ge

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Not trees/plants or shrubs...but I bought 2 books today:

Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs, and The Timber Press Pocket Guide to Hostas

Today was the last MG class, Thursday will be the final exam, then it's the 50 hours of volunteer time! I figured from all of the classes, it's time to bulk up my small sized hort library. I'll probably go crazy for a little while, since the price of some of these books is worth some very nice trees that I want! lol

Great pics and choices everyone!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Lucky you, Thom. Here they require 100 hrs.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thom - you can buy even very recently published books, as used, on Alibris and many other sites. I love used books, especially when people have underlined or written in the margins. Try pricing just one book as a test.

Stamford, CT

Hi Ngam, I believe that is a Choke Cherry you have, our has not bloomed yet but pretty sure that's what it looks like!
YEAH RAIN!!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh thankyou abbyday, that is exactly what it is. All the birds do love the fruit, but when they bloom I try to avoid that side of the yard, it is not a pleasing scent to me.

Thomaston, CT

Our choke cherry attracts scads of orioles--DH is always threatening to have it removed because of the mess, but it wasn't taken down yesterday when the tree guys came & I was up in Goshen babysitting---that's taking most of my time, so my DIL can be at the hospital--Grant is still in ICU, but breathing totally on his own, & he even drank from a bottle yest. Small steps, but all in the right direct. Banana Custard & Plum Smokey verbascum have arrived, but until frost warnings are over, they are sitting under lights.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Hurray for Grant!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

That is great news Robin, so happy to hear of the positive steps and am sure they will continue. The birds go nuts when the fruit ripens, last year not much do to the winter moth invasion. This year so far looks a lot better.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Great news. Hope he's home real soon.
