What have you bought so far?? Pt.5

Metrowest, MA(Zone 6a)

Candyce,

Too funny lol. Maybe I need to give that a try since I have yet to see any signs of life from my Columbine containers. We are having some great weather this week so maybe the extra warmth will encourage them.

Pixie,

I did two sets of jugs this year a few months apart. Definitley having more success with the second batch that I did following Anita's guidance.

i said a lot of nasty things to/about my pennyblacks - and finally 2 days ago, i have a few little sprouts!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The Cannas and Caladiums have finally started to sprout. Took three weeks. But I'm happy not to have wasted the money.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I have good news, sort of. After calling Klehm's several times, leaving voice mail messages, and 2 emails...I got in touch with them. Evidentally when seeking to return something, you get a personal Klehm's shopper...lol. I was told I was being taken care of by one person. After informing them that I worked night shift, and that I really wanted to speak to someone as soon as possible...my personal shopper called me back in about 30 minutes. I'm getting credit for the cell phone sized Tsuga, and the s/h is being credited back! The Morus that I ordered, to which I believe is dead, is being reshipped! The person to whom I was speaking was doubting that I had anything (ie, nematodes) wrong with the soil. I informed her of my participation in the MG class, and also informed her that the instructor that taught us the Entymology part of the class was the one who inspected the soil. I told her the "worm" looking things died within seconds of reaching normal air, and were less than 1/4" in length. She immediately said that she would have their nursery person inspect all of their stock.
Word to the wise, for all of you reading this, if you are ordering from Klehm's, please check your soil...the only reason I spotted these "worms" was b/c of pulling out the plants and checking the rootball, and noticing that some of the soil shifted/squirmed.

I'm glad that they made good on their plants!

In a better note, 2 of my lily auctions are coming this week, along with Rosy Dawns!!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm quite far north and have asked for a Mid May shippingtime. Loved the RosyD coleus. Nurseries here don't have annuals out yet and there were some I especially wanted so I'm going for postage to getBig Red
Copper Glow ( so nice with cream and peach impatiens)
Elfers
Hot Sauce
Mahogany Giant.
Send pictures when your come?

I'm sorry that you didn't have a lot of success with your w/s'ing! Where are you putting your containers? I have them on my stone patio in full sun. All I do now is make sure they aren't drying out. I've even planted a few things out in the garden already. Here's my latest list - http://lakehousecreations.com/wintersown_2008.htm . Perhaps you will have better luck next year. Also, what kind of soil do you use?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

WFF order arrived this am. Everything was well packaged and arrived in good condition especially considering how warm it has been the last few days. Kudos to the brown truck people too, because I am usually a late afternoon stop but I assume since it is warm that they delivered earlier than usual. Here is a pic of the two shrubs that arrived. Kolwitzia 'Dream Catcher' and chaenomeles 'Iwai Nishiki'.
Also received in 3" pots: two rudbeckiafulgida 'Pot of Gold', ecxhinacea 'Pink Double Delight' and 'Fatal Attraction', gaillardia aristata 'Amber Wheels', luecanthemum 'Goldrausch', and penstemon 'Violet Dusk'.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

These are the 9 beauties that I ordered from Rosy Dawn, hands down bigger, better, and less expensive than any "specialty" coleus I can get from any of the garden centers/nurseries in my area...woohoo

I am a believer. Thanks for sharing. I am very eager to see my order. This is why Daves Garden works.
Any names for your babies.?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i must confess...
i went to Agway, looking for grub killer and mole deterrent, both of which they only have in the super family sized bags, but i bought a quart(?) sized container of black violas...
Then i went to the nursery closest to me on the way home - even less size choices...
but...
i bought
a small rosemary plant (i don't think mine is coming back)
"Ace of Spades" sweet potato vine
and
an "Amethyst Mist" heuchera - i don't think i have ever found one to buy before! But i could NOT resist... (now i have to figure out where to put it...)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Amy - I have that heuchera and I'm sure you'll love it. Mine is in mostly shade and only gets the very early sun each day.

Thom - you are hysterical! The colors will pop even more when they get some light. Have fun! Leave feedback, too!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

hope my rosy dawn order comes soon

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Holy crap-o-la...lol. Didn't realize that Rosy Dawn sent me a bonus colues...lol...yippee!

Starting front and center, in the pic I posted, and then moving to the Left, up and around...

Front and center: Diablo
left center: Burning Bush
next: bonus: Say Cheese
Trailing Plum Brocade
Green Giant
Raspberry Ruffles
Saturn's Rings
Trailing Psycholeus
Eric the Red

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Pirl - i just had to have it for the name... i really like the silvery looking ones...
i have almost no shade here and the shade i do have is in an area that is quite unlovely and not often in my line of sight. But it does get morning light. It's where i put the little hosta that Thom made me take home in October - i'd never had one before... (see the June RU thread for pictures...)

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Those are great Thom. Don't forget...we want a photo journal of the beds - before, during and after...

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes! I second that idea, Anita.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Definitely.

I suspect Thom is very young. (Since his mother appears to be very young in the picture.) So we can expect a lot of hard work in those new beds.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

There will be exhausting days ahead for Thom, when he won't be feeling exactly "young" at the end of the day, but it will all be worth it! Trust me, Thom!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Columbine was the only plant that we tried to wintersow this year. We were careful to follow all of the posted instructions, and we were getting really anxious when nothing seemed to be happening. But, once we moved the little darlings indoors and into a sunny window, it was about two weeks before we saw little tiny sprouts.

Now, we have, perhaps, hundreds of them! I don't know where we will plant them outside in a few weeks, but both Anna and I love columbine, so we'll just have to 'suffer' with having so many of them.

On the other hand, the marigolds aren't doing as well. But, we didn't WS those.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just ordered baloon flower andfrom Halsons "specials"

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I'm gonna have to tell Eth that, Ethel being my mother. She feels "old," she says seeing her oldest hit 30 was like a nail in her chest. She and I are exactly 20 years apart, minus 3 months. So, she just turned 54, with me turning 34 in May.

I received 2 more DL's from Lilyauction.com. These people with their bonus DL's, again, Crap-o-la. I don't know where to put them all! But, I'm sure I'll find room...lol.

In this batch was 'Painted Bunting' which is the DL that I won, the bonus is 'Dripping With Gold'~is a real stunner!

They should both bloom this year! What are these DL auction people thinking?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'm happy for you, Thom.

My youngest is my daughter and she's 39, so now I feel ancient. Maybe antique?

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Great buy Tom!

You can tell Mom she definitely doesn't look 54, and after she shoots you for revealing her age, she will probably love us.

Pirl, 70 is the new 50, so that makes you about 29.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

70 is the new 50???? Great.
My daughters are
53
51
49
48
What a ball. I'm52

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

heehee

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Unfortunately that extrapolates down. So they are probably in their late 30s. Otherwise you could be five sisters. (hopefully with many bathrooms).

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Received two orders today - clematis from Debbie at Silver Star and Garden Crossings. Photos to follow later.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Debbie should patent her root balls. That's a pretty flower on MP. Would look nice with this one if someone likes a pink/blue combo.

Yes - and that's some ring!

ROTFLMAO - You pull some dingers Victor!!!!!!!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I do, but that's kind of personal...

Ex Girlfriend?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

nice roots Victor

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Personal!! You know how to make us laugh!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

You do have some great roots there, Victor. Debbie is a sweetie and most helpful.

Venu - your nails are just too clean! Very pretty clematis but we need some dirt under those fingernails.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Change of subject - the most $$$ plant I bought - my tree peony - is not doing well. All new foliage and buds keep wimping out. I called Fairweather and they offered no help - disappointing. I googled and did find that they do get peony wilt. So I might treat it with a fungicide and hope for the best. What a bummer. It's still in a pot.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

My MG neighbor always loses hers no matter how hard she tries to keep them alive, so it's probably not anything you either did or didn't do, Victor, but the plant itself.
