Best/Worse and What did I learn today? Friends pt.39

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning, it's a sunshine day out there, I'll keep the finishing touches to the lighthouse for later, going to get that rake out and get some work done, might even try to empty the pond to clean and refill..exciting isn't it..

Dawn, glad your seedlings are doing ok ..sounds as though your gardens are coming together...

Greg, you can't be forgetting those pills, it's a must..taking chances by even forgeting one!

Well coffee in hand, boots on and I'm ready to take on the day..will drop in from time to time for a rest..

Do hope you are all having a sunshine day as well..

Edited to read..

Well I'm now back inside for a few hours (or more) as the pond is frozen over, leaves are frozen to the flowers so cannot rake..so, another coffee in hand, paints out I'll finish some projects...must be flexible for change of plans..lol

One would wonder how I can accomplish anything with all the posting I do..lol..but with computer next to craft floor it's easy/easy to drop in...

Wanted to tell Shar that she can include me in the 'secret gift' exchange..just sent out the my April gift..I'm all caught up with all my swaps except for 1 which I'm waiting for the name...so if we are having one, I'm IN...

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Morning..LOL..it is 0c here too..not a nice day to be out yet..but the sun is trying.
Your Lighthouse is wonderful Betty. Love the pretty touches you gave it..

Dawn..thanks ...those photos are taken at my Son in laws..the tall tree like one is the Castor Beans.
Notice I said Son in law..he is the one who likes to garden. My daughter says she hasn't got the bug yet...LOL
Good thing nothing serious happened to Greg. I didn't realize that if you miss one pill it would cause that reaction. I have high blood pressure..and I sometimes miss taking my pills. A good reminder for us all.

Crozet, VA

Good morning to all. Betty, I love the lighthouse. The curtains make it extra special. I can't wait to see the other finishing touches that you will be adding. It will be such a great addition to your place.

Jeannine, you should be very proud of all of your handy work also. You have put in a lot of hard work making the stepping stones. I love them. Thank you for the pictures that you have shared of your progress.

Amy, glad to see that you are reading. Are you able to keep up? This group moves really, really fast from time to time and often times I can't keep up. Would love to hear about anything that you are involved in.

Gita, you will be giving Betty a run for the money with reading Dave's Garden while at work. You made me smile.

Dawn, scary about Greg and the forgotten medication. Glad that you figured out what was going on. Hooray for naps. They are the very greatest.

My main undertaking for the day will be packaging up mainly Castor Bean seeds and a few other things in order to get in the mail tomorrow. John commented on the disarray of one end of the kitchen counter.
I have all the seeds and envelopes sitting there so I won't forget that they need attention.

Anyway.......I hope that everyone will have a good day. I will check in from time to time today.

Take care all.

Ruby

Crozet, VA

Cross posted with you Starzz. Starzz, oh yes the pictures of the coleus and castor bean plant were great. Your son in law sure does have a green thumb. Amazing.

We decided to just plant our castor beans in a large pot or two this year. John said there were a few volunteers coming up where they were planted last year. We might just transfer those or we might leave them and start new beans in the pots.

I wanted the castor beans because my mother used to raise them and I have tried over the past few years to grow some of the things that I remember my mom planting many years ago. Hollyhock is something that she also planted that we had growing along side of the castor beans last year. I am not sure if I will plant any more of these or not. I already have a few coming back from last year.

Well, I need to get up and move around some. Remember to have a great day everyone.

Ruby

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi Ruby..lucky you..I love to see volunteers coming up.

I remember my mum having hollyhocks too. I have grow some in the past.

(Cathy), MO

Good morning everyone. It's a yukky day here. 35 and spitting snow. Seems like this winter just doesn't want to let go. It's supposed to warm up this week though, so maybe this will be the last cold spell until next winter! Hope so! We are all ready for warm weather here.

I know I don't post alot, but I really enjoy following along and seeing all the pics and reading the stories. Next to some of yours, my life seems so boring! LOL

Have a good day all

Glenview, IL

Good Morning!

Well I am a little Fuzzied today. Yesterday was Our 23rd Anniversary, so we decided to drive to Indina, just over the border they have Riverboat Casinos! It was a wet, windy and cold day so it was a neat thing to do for something very different, yet together. hahaha, Liz took us two hours 2 get there. Due to construction...Well we had a nice Dinner, stuffed ouselves silly at the all you can eat buffet! So ful we could barely walk around. Lost a goodly amount of money, pooh! LOL, will be a very long time before we do that again. The rest of the day prior was really just a day a leisure. Watched my bird feeder and cought that rascal!

So I found out why birdfeeder is so empty!

Guilty Party! This was after I scared him off once

Had

So, I watched how he got to on the feeder. Seems He takes a flying leap from the
Table hangs on for dear life while performing acrobats!

Then when he gets tired simply eats upsidedown!
(liz) this ones for you!

Well, I am completely out of food again! So I will be mooving the feeders to that pole, as soon as I can
hmmm, maybe today will be the day.

Nothing else special to report.

Betty, looks like you had fun yesterday at the lighthouse workshop! Wow, nice! looking forward to see how you "Country" it up.
I think it will liook great by the pond somewhere.

Dawn, how nice you had a visit with your friends! Brightens my day to hear of such grand memories in the making. Sorry to hear about Gregs bout..scarey for sure. But glad to hear he got his meds in time. Nice to take a nap too.

Gita, good to see you, LOL I can so comprehend on procrastination! Yep, eventually it all gets done, hahha, might take me a year or two.
Cool, you get to read at work! Well, just be careful while sneaking a peek.

Hi Cat always glad to read when you can post.

Well, I got to go see what we decide to work on...DN coming tonight. He is headed for California. Taking Train from Downtwon Chicago tomorrow.

See you all Later...Hello to EVeryone wishing you a Sunshiney day.

So cute..happy belated anniversary and happy birthday to Steve...been working outside like a fool, just came in for pop..pond will soon be empty but must stop..poor goldfish in last year and never saw a sucker, today at the bottom here they are swimming away, so can't fully empty it..will clean it and do best I can...while it's emptying I've been doing a good job raking leave off the flowers beds, so far 24 wheelbarrels full of debris..I'll pay tomorrow...

Can't visit, must continue my trek..

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

It's unbelievable the work some of you get done in one day!Makes me feel like a slug! I guess we all have out own pace!

DH went up north to his parents to cut down some trees. He said they are small ones. But it is windy.

The sun is trying to shine which is a big plus. My petunias are up I started from seed and so are some of the onions. The marigolds have been sprouting for a couple of days. Makes a person happy to see them. I'm debating on if I should start the other 5 petunia seeds. Wish I knew the color of the ones I transplanted. That will teach me to rely on my memory! LOL

Judy Congrats on the anniversary. Aren't the squirrels fun to watch. I have a seperate feeder set up for them to try and keep them out of the bird feeder. It has helped. They love the bread. I have some old apples I will slice and put in there today. Saw my first for sure bluebird yesterday. Poor things with the snow out there.

Starzz Love your garden pictures. Your SIL does a great job. Loved the coleus. I am assuming they are in pots?

Dawn I forgot to take some of my meds and didn't feel right for a couple of days. Heart pounding a bit harder. Then it dawned on me what was missing. LOL Just glad he is okay and it is a good reminder for me. So glad you enjoyed the visit with your friend. Hope they do move to Vegas.

Ruby how big of a pot are you talking about for the castor beans? Someone I use to know grew them and said they had to use the tractor to pull them up they had such a good root system.

I'd better get going and see if I can catch up with the rest of you! LOL

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I got some seeds and planted them, but soaked them too long so I don't think they will come up. Ruby are you sending me some. I need to send a SASE asap if you set some aside for me.

Crozet, VA

Dawn and everyone else...I am not expecting postage in return. Just think nice thoughts about me when you see your plants.

Vicky, I have some really huge pots to plant the Castor Beans in. I must wonder what your friend fed his beans to have become that sturdy. ha-ha I know what you mean about these folks who work like maniacs.

Judy, I loved the squirrel pictures. I would have been laughing my head off watching him.

Hello to Starzz, Cat and Betty and anyone else who happens to be reading. I have had a productive day. I have everyone's seed ready to go to Post Office tomorrow. It didn't take as long as I thought it might. John helped to break the beans out of the shells. He also counted out ten beans for each person. I hope that is enough. I hope that everyone has good success with them. Next year you all will be offering the seeds to others.

Pleas all remember that these plants are known to be poisonous. Keep children and pets away.

Well, it is coming up on dinner time. I made a jello salad earlier and am looking forward to having some of it. I haven't made one for a long time it seems. The weekend is winding down. I hope that everyone had a good one.

Ruby

Victoria Harbour, ON

Ruby, thank you and also you John for helping out..I am as I'm sure everyone else is, very appreciative ...
Just in for glass of pop and back outside I go..

Have Greg/Mel and the boys for supper so managed to do a lemon merangue pie and a cocanut cream pie..Greg's favorite is old fashion 'poulet et glissant' lol
in plain old english..chicken and slidders..so chicen is cooked, broth is in the refrigerator, pond is filling and there are about 10 loads of leaves to be disposed of and then in I come..

Feel great about my day .. saved 2 goldfish from uncertain death..got lots done and can't believe how much greenery was under those leaves..havent' touched the front, or sides of the house..have already done more than I should have..glutten for punishment as I know tomorrow I'll not lift my arms...oh well..at least I'll have a pretty garden..

Be back later..

Crozet, VA

I hope that you have some Ben Gay or other linament to rub on those sore arms and legs. That is to say nothing of the achy back. I feel for you honey.

Ruby

Victoria Harbour, ON

Boys, Mel and Greg just left..fast supper as not only is Grandma tired but Kyle has a project to complete..Greg almost walked away with the 2 pies but ended up with the cocoanut cream..I'll put the others out for the painters tomorrow...

I'm proud of myself today for what I've accomplished..first thing Greg says is 'mom, it ALL doesn't have to be done in 1 day' lol - another 3 or 4 days and it will all be raked..

I'm off for another warm bath..lordy I smell like 'swamp' even after 2 quick baths today..by the time I have it, the pond should be full, and water spray feature is already working..keep wondering 'how come no one else in the neighborhood is out working outside..just me? So, that leads me to 2 answers..one it's too cold out today or they KNOW winter is still going to give us another blast...I'll be the one sitting with my feel up enjoying while everyone else is working..do you think?

I so wanted to get all my stuff out in back shed and under the deck but, got to call it quits sometimes...

So, do hope your day was enjoyable..

Best...what I got done today...

Worse...neighbor was telling me that the gentleman who has 3 young children adjacent to my property line and who built a big addition last year is now 'wifeless'..she left leaving him the 3 little ones..lordy that's sad!

What did I learn today..I've got fishies..hope I didn't damage them in the changing of waters...reminds me, I have the food I purchased last year when I bought them and thought they all had died, perhaps I'd better go give them a treat..after all, they've had quite a winter...

night / night

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

OMG Betty!

But I know you feel great about geting a good start on it all. Neat that you have two goldfish still alive.
We have a week of warmer weather ahead..

I planted some basil seeds and some large aster seeds today..did some laundry had a nap..read the newspaper..and puttered with some gardening things.

Vicki..those coleus are planted straight in the ground..very close together..He watered and fed them Miracle Gro fertilzer often.
That was his best year..2005....he has had other years when they didn't get so tall.

I am wondering how they are ..they left for Disneyworld in FL last night ,for a week. Their first time..the girls are 10 and 14..my daughter decided it was time they saw it as a family.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Ruby..that jello salad sounds good..I ahven;t had that for a long time.

Judy..aren't the squirrels greedy little things. It is hard to stop them from eating all the birdseed.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Off to bed, just checked water level in pond and it's A-ok so I can rest easy..lol

I would say I have about 4 out of 10 beds raked..

Doesn't look the prettiest without it's flowers but it's coming, and don't forget the lighthouse at the top end of the pond..

Edited to read...

Once the trees have leaves I don't see the workshop behind me..it's actually quite a distance but looks closer in this photo...

Beautiful, Betty. Now go rest.

I am having computer problems, so don't worry if I don't show up for a day or so. gotta get this thing fixed!!!

You all take care.....fun to read the thread tonight.
Hugs, shar

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

This isn't the thread where i was recently typing about a local computer repair company, which puts flyers on lightposts, called Effen Computers, is it?

Like my favourite company name EVER.

...ring...
"Good morning, Effen Computers!"
"Yes, my Effen Computer has a problem!"
and so on.
Makes me giggle uncontrollably. But i am often immature like that.
^_^

Anyway Sharon, i hope you get your effen computer fixed soon...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Shar, sorry to hear about your computer difficulties..nothing worse than not having friends close at hand..mailed out your seeds on Sat....heck just when we wanted to be of support to you..prayers going your way...

Amethystsm..nice way to start me day, with a chuckle..didn't sleep well last night, guess overworked but am ready for a day of rest...lol..

Gab to you all from work this morning..have mega catching up to do..

Crozet, VA

Amy, that Effen computer story is really cute. ha-ha Love it!!!

Betty, I love your ponds. The rocks are beautiful. What a relaxing place that seems to be.

Starzz, the jello salad was wonderful. I few weeks ago Darius from this group was here to stay over night before some of her Medical Center visits that are nearby. She left a container of real whipped cream. It was good to squirt a big blob of that on the jello. Yum, yum really delicious.

Shar - I sure hope that you get the computer fixed. I will miss not seeing you here. If push comes to shove, you can always call me and we will gab a bit. I am looking forward to hearing your Kentucky accent.

To any others reading, have a great day.

rachel where have you been hidding?

gilli, are you unburried from the snow yet?

ruby, mmm that jello sounds real good right now, how did all the other planting go? did you get your shed organised yet? what are those puppies of yours up to?

judy, now i know to lock my doors and not answer my phones lol you and dawn are going to kick my a-- for sure!!!! but it was a matter of principle and protecting the dogs.......
yesterday morning we were getting ready to leave dh washing the truck im getting dressed and asta is barking and screaming..
so i run to the yard now the other one is barking so both of them at the fence chewing the wood i run to see what they have cornered? but see nothing, thought it was the terrirory thing with the dog next store.. but it wasnt so
i look on the fence, omg it is a huge raccoon so i get the hose and hose it it jumps down between our fence and the neighbors shed so i think its stuck... so im hosing it down trying to make it leave.
the stupid racoon thinks im bathing it so everytime i hose it ,it is washing its hands ect!!.now im flipping out! wait till dh see's me im not dressed...
and now im after the ladder to see if it is stuck or what? no its just sitting there grrrr....
ok now im mad! dogs are in a frenzy , now dh comes out back and says WHAT ARE YOU DOING? i tell him soo he says just go get dressed i'll get rid of it.
so he says its gone ran in johns yard... so as he leaves to get gas said i should be ready when he gets back.
curiosity is going to kill me, so i go back to the fence to see it again! and now its growling ok thats it ..its on now!!!! so back on the ladder hosing it down wont move, so im thinking it must be sick, its daylight and knowing my dogs the'll go after it and i dont need vet bills.
so out comes the stick i hit this thing twick he looked at me showed his teeth and made me even madder so now im hanging over the fence litterally fighting with the racoon , now the little dog comes out..
so scared she will get hurt, i yell at her she leaves now john comes out to see what all the racket is about the racoon leaves the yard finally john said he thought it was the same scroungy one that limps around the neighborhood.
dh comes and says are you ready yet i told him he just shakes his head.
heard the dogs barking up a big storm three houses down so it did leave and i was ok to get on the road..phew what a work out so early :)
glad you had a nice time, yuck rainy weather, love those pictures boy it is determined to get those seeds lol ha ha mine cant get into my live feeder, chicken wire worked pretty good plants are all still in tact

HA! I've got an Effen computer!!! It's got a Dell label on it but I know it's EFFEN!!

Crozet, VA

Hilarious Liz, I would have loved to have seen you fighting that rascal. If your neighbor says that he limps around the neighborhood, it sounds like this is not his first battle with a crazed woman with a stick. ha-ha

Well, can you all make him the neighborhood mascot and leave some food out for him? Or would you rather not encourage his visits. Is there a Wildlife Rescue available who might come and get him next time and take him to a refuge where he will be taken care of?

If you can't tell, I am a real softie for animals. Because I don't have much experience, well no experience with raccoons, I want the little guy taken care of. Please give updates if there are any.

You asked about my planting progress, and shed organization. On Friday I was able to get some of the live plants that I ordered in the ground. There are several bare root plants still in packaging waiting for me to plant one day this week. Much too cold for me to be out today, for sure.

When my help was here one day last week, we cleaned out the shed and threw away several large garbage bags of stuff. We really didn't do much organizing. It was such a dirty job getting the trash out that I was ready for break. Hopefully it will be organized a bit by bit while using the gardening supplies that are in there.

Thanks for asking, always want a reason to gab more on here. I find that typing out my thoughts helps me to organize them and be able to prioritize also. Today the major thing to be done is meeting with a financial advisor along with my son who needs to invest some money he just received from a real estate property deal.

Well, i need to get up from here and start my day. Another night of being awake most all night and then going back early this morning and sleeping a few more hours. I am really confused with sleep these days. Oh well, I just try to go with the flow.

Again Liz, thank you for another great story. Love it, love it, love it.

Ruby

Crozet, VA

You are a cutie Jeannine.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Elizabeth I must think in my mind GOPHER and substitute the work racoon for
the G word to put myself in your place. My gophers don't growl at me they just outsmart me and flip me off.

No calls will be coming, though I see why he limps. Repellants don't work? I wonder if that Milorganite fertilizer would repel the other critters too besides deer and rabbits?

Victoria Harbour, ON

You girls are too funny! Amazing Jeannine how many of you have the same brand..

Suzanne called me at 6:10 and wanted to leave, thank goodness I'm an early riser and was dressed with coat/shoes at the door...

If you would all like to know where your body muscles are located, just let me know, am sure I can tell you where each is as per my aches and pains but I'll not tell you about them because it's of my own doing..lol..

Liz, now tell me what your are going to do with the skeins of wool??? or did you just purchase them because of being a good deal lol..that's something I'd do..I'm anxious to see your clay pot lighthouse..is it put together or did you just get all the painting on it done..was showing my birdhouse from the exchange we had that you sent me, everyone agrees, to nice to put outside...so not sure..will wait till my friendship garden is done to decide.

Liz you sure can get yourself into mischief..lol.. So how many more dragonflies will there be..you should make a few to look like butterflies, just change the wing style...FIL sounds as though he's enjoying helping you! Something in common..

Ruby I'l have to find the jello salad recipe..I belong to Bazzar recipies where they a a zillion of them, you can tell I get bored at work because I don't even cook so no need for recipe's..smuck that I am..

Laura, my thoughts and have been with you over the weekend, do you've already put in your Monday and now you are sleeping soundly I hope..not a care in the world..nightmares all gone...you never did show us photo's of your garden???

Judy, so enjoyed your photo's..cheeky little thing isn't it..you can't buy entertainment such as that..

Carol, sounds as though your weekend was full as well..did you decide yet if you are going to paint the cedar set..I so wanted to take out the muskoka chairs but thought better of it..now when you say you planted...not your seedlings right? Seeds? I've about 50 pkgs. of them..too soon for me isn't it?

Gita, you worked in the nursery yesterday, bet you enjoyed your day..you should see the seedlings from your sees, they are getting stronger by the day..I'm excited..will have to go back to the packets soon to determine where they will be planted..

I did plant a lot of gourd seeds, but they are very slow at germinating, guess perhaps it will take quite a few more weeks..by that time I should be able to plant..

I ordered 2 loads of top soil but think I should have ordered more...front gardens each need a load, not counting the ones in the back..

Sun is shinning here today but looks cool..calling for fantastic weather all weekend...I booked Dr.'s appt. for Friday 10:00 am so that will give me an 'almost' long weekend...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Ruby, sometimes figuring out what you are going to do is half the work..I'm so excited about getting the seeds from you..I thought about the shipping when I did Shar's..put them in a card so doubt they'll go looking, although it makes a sound in the packet when you handle the card..they MUST have better things to do than look for my seeds would you think...

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

YES! I did enjoy it a lot. My Mgr. came in at 1PM. He entered through the Garden gates just to see if I had set-up my table for the 1PM Free Clinic on "Selecting and dividing perennials"--or something like that. Of course I had--and had already made 3 announcements over the PR system for any one interested to come and attend.

No one really came--but I did "corner" one lady who had 2 flat-bed carts full of stuff, among them several perennials and a huge weeping Cherry Tree.
I showed her how to divide and re plant a Hosta and then told her how to properly plant a tree. She was appreciative.

Overall--it was a good day out there....a bit chilly and windy, but OK. I might end up being out there more days than just Sundays--as long as it is one of my 3 days I wish to work. NO extra days! They will just have to take me out of the Phone Center if my Manager wants me out there more.

Bdetty, DO show me some pictures of my seeds growing.....

My computer is running this morning, think it was the effen powerstrip that goes with it. So I worked on the strip, so maybe. Thanks Amy. I needed to hear that.

going to work in the gallery this afternoon, maybe if the computer is doing better, I will be able to talk tonight.

See ya.

You know, the more I think about it, I think I have A LOT of things at my house by this 'Effen' company! They must "make" dogs too!! And I know the cable company must be a subsiderary of the Effen company as well as the people we bought our bed from. Sure wish I had bought some stock in the Effen company! I could be an Effen millionaire by now!
