Gilli how exciting is that! thanks for sharing the pictures.Had never heard of the Ice road before that show was on tv.
I forgot to hit Watch this Thread! But also wasn't on much the last few days. Hopefully life is back to normal.
Cleaned in the gh so I have room to put my seedlings I am finally getting potted. Happy with the siver dust I started. Kept 2 plants over winter and got starts off them. A pot of petunias had seeded last fall so brought them in. Have to get them divided and replanted. Plus restart a few seeds. So will keep this short.
But know I have enjoyed reading and looking at all the pictures. Hope to be back later.
Here are the silver dust starts.
Best/Worse and What did I learn today? Friends pt.39
Gillian, love the photo's..many don't realize just how much you must be prepared for ice break up..supplies are needed sometimes for as much as 3 weeks (at least down here) Greg went to Doug's (DC) on the weekend and he's got his scoot sitting ready for breakup..when I lived in Port Severn on the water, I would house 3 to 5 children who travelled to school by boat when the ice was forming and then again in the spring when ice breakup occurred...I loved it and they loved it..would keep them Monday to Friday on weekends scoots would bring them home...
We use ice roads to go to Christian Island which is about 3/4 hr. from my house..native community..I always enjoy visiting but in summer time..
Are there many things you cannot purchase up there? i.e. groceries/clothing..where would the closest shopping area be..please don't say almost to where I live lol..which could quite be possible..
Here I was anxious to have the snow leave and thought winter would never end and look at you, still in great amounts..what would the weather be like today for you? We are expecting temps of 16...isn't that exciting...
Vicki, I'm envious..a greenhouse, your dusty miller look large enough to plant...guess one needs hydro and some type of heating system right...you enjoy playing in it today for both you and I...
Quiet afternnon at the office for me..trying to entertain myself..t.v. is on - watching soaps and took out my 9 piece picture puzzle which I take out now and then when I get desperate enough so I'm working on it and in comes Paul (boss) sees what I'm doing and now I'm in trouble...
He tells me to up myself, he sits down and plays with the puzzle..cute..AND inside of 1/2 hr. he completes it...lol...now you have to realize that he's meeting with lawyer in his office, lawyer needs a few minutes to himself to do up some documents so Paul says I'll be back in a sec. and here he is playing in my 'office craft room'...
Hi all -
Didn't get online last night. long night at school and a little excitment beforehand (I'll explain further down). Anyway, at school, walked thru the gardens for an hour and although I really love doing that, we then went back into the room for an hour and a half class. Didn't get home until close to 9:00. I did take lots of pictures at the garden though and will try and post some tonight.
Shar, they have a Chocolate Vine at the gardens that is to die for. Not as many flowers this week as last but so, so pretty!
Liz, haven't been able to work in the yard in almost a week because of the rain. I'm sure the area where the stones are going is very muddy!. Maybe this weekend.....
Betty, I agree, Adam Corolla needs to go on DWTS but sadly, that means Julianne will have to go home. Personally, I don't like Pricilla, Marissa or Shannon.
OK, so last night on the way to school, I drove thru an intersection where the lane I was in prior to the intersection was the right lane and when you go thru the intersection that lane becomes the middle lane. So I noticce this car in front of me at the light that is from TN and has 4 ppl in it and it was a small car. Anyway, we drove thru the intersection and the car moved over to the new right lane which now makes it a 3-lane road. I stay in the middle lane. As I pass the car, I glance over to just see who's driving (not that's I'd know them) and I see it's an elderly man w/ 3 passengers -driving real slow. I turn back to the road and this is where the lanes all curve slightly to the right and then straighten back up. Well I turn my truck to curve w/ the road and BAM, the little car bumps me towards the back end. I look in my realview mirror and I see this car half in my lane half still in the right lane and I figure he's meant to stay in the middle lane and just comes on over. So anyway, I wave him over and we pull off the road. While we do this, I am calling my DH to let him know. I get out of the car and I see it's 3 elderly men and 1 younger guy. I said you bumped into me and he's lime "oh no I didn't" you ran into me. So I tell DH, I need to call the police cause we aren't going to agree on this. Anyway cop arrives, DH arrives and it looks like the guy has bumped into my front tire (the wheel well over his front driver tire is all scuffed up with tire marks - not dented). The cop decides since it looks monor that we each just need to exchange info and contact our insurance. So we do that and I go to school and get home and I just keep running this thing thru my mind and I can't believe he bumped into my front tire - cause I remember passing him and seeing it was a elderly guy. So I call it into my insurance even though there is no damage to my truck.
I get a call this morning and a guy from the ins comp is coming out to look at the truck and assess it. He comes out and after looking at everything determines the guy didn't hit my front tire but he hit my step bar and then the back tire. The front tire showed some scuffing so I thought that was it but he said no, that is probably from hitting a curb ( know I do that!) and the back tire shows a smooth rubbing that is from the guy''s car. So to make a short story long, I give my statement to the lady onm the phone and they contact the company who owns the car in TN (it's a chevy dealer) and basically, they say it's an "at fault" deal and since their deductable is XYZ, the man will probably have to pay out of his pocket (he is one of these guys that is hired to drives cars from one dealer to another for trades). I was like, listen, I don't need the money cause I'm not going to take the truck in for a scratch on the step bar and I have no desire to pocket the money. So I tell the lady if we do except the money then I will just go purchase a new tire with it (we will need those for inspection come June). My ins lady said she'd call me back to let me know what they come back with. DH said take it for the inconvenience of everything and I'm like yeah, but even though the man argued with me, he was a nice old man. So we'll see. No one was hurt and my truck is fine and I actually made it to class on time!!
WHEW!
So going home now - will try to post more tonight!!
Cheers!!
J
afternoon all,
well bad news...
dh went to the doctor this morning and the hepatitis virus was undectable after 12 weeks in his 48 mth treatment so today was the release appt to give him a clean bill of health.
but unfortunatly two viral load tests were taken,
one month after compleating the treatment has shown that even though the virus was NOT detectable,
he is in the 50% group that the body rejected the treatment and there for there is not to much they can do for him at this time.
they are however working on a new treatment with a third medicine but it has not come up for grabs yet to have a experiment group in which he could participate, but the liver doctor said as long as he dont drink he should be able to live a decent life. kenny never has been a drinker so that is ok,
he said im taking it worse than he is but im ok has a few waterfalls but im ok with things now.
we will check in with the nurse every 6 months to see if any new treatments have arrised to try, but it is a very slow illness it is in 4 stages and he is in stage 1 so he is actually being a real good sport about the whole thing.
as for the good news loss prevention is delivering 130.00 to my boss guess they got a confession from that girl
so with that im going to nap now so i'll be back later on
Liz, I'm so sorry it wasn't better news, wasn't what you were hoping for but their giving him emotional support that he could live a long life, that's a blessing..know you must be hurting 'sweetie'..am sending warm hugs and prayers for both of you..
Roger had cancer in the liver and what amazed me is that the doctors told me (other than with cancer) that if looked after, the liver can regenerate itself..apparently one of the only organs that can..so with a diet, looking after himself..he'll be fine..
Now wipe those tears, know you want to scream/shout and stamp your feet..would help you somewhat but with all of us praying, you know he'll be in good hands..already seen many miracles come about..this prayer request will not go to deaf ears...so chin up, quick smile and go give dh a big hug and a kiss! Will make him feel better knowing you are ok....
Jeannine, wow you were lucky..glad not a lot of damage to the vehicle, but none the less, maybe he shouldn't be driving if he's all over the road...
Had parked at my DB this morning so dropped in for a gab on the way home..he was working on the lighthouses..guess Mom and Aunt Muriel will be there for the day and my DS got him to make her a couple birdhouses rather than the lighthouse..said perhaps that's what I should paint but he didn't go for it..told me to put it near the pond and I'd like it..ok..convince me..lol..so Saturday should prove interesting..
Got home and NO SNOW left..hurrah/hurrah..OMG it's so overwhelming..all the work that has to be done to clean the front and back yards...maybe I should have kept the snow, couldn't see the mess....
Thought I'd come in and change clothes and go out and work for an hour or so, be decided against it..still too soon..if I take their winter leave garb off and we get snow, just might kill all the plants that seem to be putting their head up..I'll be patient..at least till the weekend
So, I've a few things to do for my class tomorrow night..i.e. cut a piece of linoleum for a floor matt...mix proper genesis colors for blue jay..look for patterns for my faux windows so that will keep me going..of course I must watch dancing with the starts...no bingo tonight..don't feel up to it..
Will try to check in on you all before I go night/night
Oh Liz, I am so sorry about the news you received today. It sounds like your DH has a positive attitude and that is half the battle. I'm not real familiar with hepatitis except the Judds mother has it and was diagnosed a while back - and as far as I know doing real well. So, I'm sending thoughts, prayers and hugs your way!!!
Betty, I cannot believe ALL that snow is gone! My gosh, there was tons of it!!! Maybe if any more falls, the ground will be so warm it won't stick!
Here are some pictures from the botanical gardens where I take my class.
GG, your alien plant is a fern of some sort......not sure without seeing it in full growth.
wonderful pictures, thanks for taking us with you.
Those are gorgeous, thanks for sharing the lovelies!
Cathy aka doccat5
Liz, Continued prayers and hugs being sent your way my friends. Sounds like Kenny has healthy atitude and that is a plus.
You take a good rest and we'll talk when your ready. I was glad to hear that money was replaced and girl caught!
...Thank you for the compliments on bin. Also on my Butterly, how the heck did you do that?
Gilli, How is babygirl feeling? I do hope she is over that sick, poor baby. I love that you and Sonora have a little garden going. Wowah,
That is still major snow! Happy to hear DH has returned as well. So glad you shared your photo's. Whew. I didn't realize you live an island! LOL, I mean I knew you were way out there, yow. Looks like incredibly gorgeous nature for sure, I can see why you love it.
Hope you get a break in somewhere soon. smiles to you.
Ves, Good to see you got into greenhouse. I hope you enjoyed the day working at whatever you wanted.
GG, Thank you for taking us with you on Botanical tour. Outstanding Spring flowers.
Oh geeze, what day you had. Was relieved to hear no serious damage or harm to you.
Hi Cat, glad you visited.
Betty, So cute, I love how you were in trouble. LOL, He beat me too, still can't figure out that puzzle.
I am sorry, have to say goodnight.
Goodnight.
Liz, sorry to hear that, but everybody is right....he has a good attitude, and with a little time, you will as well.
I enjoyed all the pictures today, thanks for showing them.
Ruby....where are you?? Carol, too.
It sure is a quiet night, and I hope that means you are all just resting after a nice day.
Hope you are are well and warm and all snuggled in.
Nite now.
Doc very interesting about the worms, I will have to read the article too. I have not been on all day till now. Planted my seedling(some of the real big but fragile ones. They are all flopped over from being in my bottles up to the top with short roots, so we'l see how that goes. I have to block them somewhat from direct sun too.
One area that I have wild flowers in is saturated and though I ammended it with a lot of straw and leaves and alfalfa cubes, it had so much decomposed granite (dg) in it, that it is still like a bog of clay and sand. I can't believe anything is growing in the soup.
I have no idea how I will ammend it either with the plants so profuse. I over seeded there. ooops.
Hope all is well.
Best is seeing my friend Debbie from Colorado, she called and said she was in town and to meet a buch of people in a restaurant, so we did, gosh I miss that girl.
Morning everyone,
Liz Sorry the news wasn't better for Kenny.
Enjoyed all the lovely blooms GG.
Sharon..how grows your garden? I thought of you yesterday as I took a look at my roses out back. I can see green on about 12 of them.... the rabbits have already cut them back for me LOL
I want to find a colourful plant that the rabbits won't eat to plant in among the roses. I see rabbits all the time out in the garden.
My son is taking the refuse from the torn down wall to the dump today. It will be interesting to see how much they charge. Our regular garbage pick-up won't take any wood materials..and we have a three bag limit a week.
I went to buy a new pump for my tiny pond yesterday. I emptied the pond..and thought of Betty with her large one..do you have to pump yours out?
I got the old cedar furniture..it had four cushions that needed to be washed bleached..I am thinking of painting the furniture a softer colour..it is that redwood colour now..
It is an exciting time of year...and so much to do..but wonderful to be outside in the fresh air.
Have a great day all.
morning all, thank you for all your kind words and support
im ok now had a good few cry"s and im back on track, it was just the initial shock i wasnt expecting that answer so we will hope and pray for another treatment.
gilli, wow, still snow oh my ice roads....

the weather here is sunny but this nasty wind cant go out for more than 5-10 minutes it just blows right through you so planting is just not happening right now.
but the seeds i started are popping up cell by cell and to think i have a six pack i dont know what the heck i planted i was so good to put markers i guess its going to be a surprise lol

Liz sending HUgs! Hope you have a good day at work. For us the Dusty millers are an annual. I'm sure you can grow them year round. They handle the cold very good tho. OH big spoons! Giant dragonflies!
Got all the seedlings potted except for the pot of petunias. That can wait until I have a day off. Thurs. is shopping day. So maybe friday inbetween cleaning.I did get some of the seedlings mixed up. I put 2 kinds in the smae one. Luckily one had fuzzy leaves. So I hope I have them straightened out.
Shar love your temps. We got a smidgeon of rain and then snow last night. Glad I haven't done any flowerbed cleaning yet. But should do some planing. It's all in my head and who knows where that could go.
Starzz garden help you don't have to pay except for a meal! LOL
Judy didn't get everything done. A friend called having big problems. So there went the morning. Then I had to have a nap! LOL
Now I have to go and get some breakfast.
You all have the day you need.
Morning everyone, just finishing bacon/eggs and homefries here at the office..didn't eat this morning and felt nauseated..so, thank goodness for the restaurant downstairs..it was yummy/yummy...
It's raining hard here in the city, bit of thunder and lightning as well..I would imagine that it will wash all the sand/salt and ugliness from the streets...better than snow..when we passed through Barrie this morning it was 52 degrees, and it should be in high 60's today but rain..
Guess what, I've been wearing a new outfit each day this week (remember all the ones in Florida I bought and can be inter changed to be about 50 outfits) anyway Paul noticed how dressed up I've been, told me he thought he was paying me much to much to be able to go out and purchase an entire wardrobe..lol
Feels nice, lightweight and dressy, now I'm on a hunt for costume jewelery to match each outfit...if I lost 10 - 20 lbs. I might be a knock out..lol-heeheehee
Jeannine, my favorite of all of these is the one you posted at 8:55..imagine there being that many types of daffodils..your aliens are neat as well..
Judy, you get a butterfly???? I'll give you a clue:
the middle piece is a one piece only design..i.e. yellow rose to the left, pink rose to the top, red rose to the left (it has a lower bud) and on the bottom is a white rose with a white bud..as for the little gazebo, you place it so that it's upside down.. now see if you can do it...lol
Dawn, how wonderful to visit with your Debbie and get supper to boot..from all the beautiful flowers, gardens and weather you have I doubted there were be any amendment to soil necessary.. everything I read says do a soil test so on the weekend while at Canadian Tire I saw a 'test kit' not sure what I'd so with the results once I have them but think I'll pick one up and see what my soil is like..I normally pay no attention to it, if a flower grows then I've hit pay-dirt, if not, try another..not a logical way to garden though..bet you all have yoursystem down to a 't'..
Carol, wow you get '3' bags per week..we are only allowed '2' and must purchase tags should we want more picked-up..with the stores just down from me I get kids (and adults) who drop their pop cans, juice bottles, pizza boxes and trays and I often have an extra bag, the store does have a bin which I sometimes use but I think I'll drop in to the Municipality one day and tell them I need tags...we do have 2 major clean ups in the spring, heavy object pick up and metal pick up which helps get rid of most things...that's when all the trash to treasure souls come out of the woodwork..lol..might join them this year...going to the dump can be so costly..hope they don't charge you an arm and a leg...
IF your cedar furniture has cushions and as you are so talented, I'd be purchasing a few meters of 'sunbrella' and make pretty cushions that can be left out in the elements...now I bet you have a spot all picked out in which to display them...
I was overwhelmed last night when I look at the front yard, both side yards and back yard..so much work to be done, can't even imagine the hours and of course I've plans for more garden art...last year I asked a few neighbors boys who are in their teens if they wanted to make money..right, why work when they are handed a fistfull of $$$ so Kyle helped me out when he could and other than that I did it..not sure why I'm feeling so overwhelmed...
As for my pond Carol, yes I will empty it..maybe Sunday if it's not raining the entire day I'll set the big pump in it and divert the water to the back bush..once emptied I'll clean it..of course I truly didn't think it out when I was making it, but then again who knew I'd end up with a 5' deep levelled pond about 20 x 20 or so that I dug myself..because I positioned it right under a large tree and then also planted a few trees right near it so a lot of leaves fall inside..takes a few hours to empty, then I'll clean it and refill..can't wait to get it turned on...
I had some damage to my beautiful water feature that sits on my front deck so I'll pick up some cement, see if I can't repair it, if not, then it will house a cascading array of plants and will look pretty..then I'll find another to replace it...gave DIL Melanie a beautiful water feature as one of her gifts at Christmas and it stayed in my basement till early Feb. finally put it under the back deck..wonder if she'd remember that I gave it to her..could always use that one..lol..might just try it..
Liz, sounds as though you are feeling better...yes, I go to DB Bernie's to do the lighthouse..Rita my girlfriend and her DH (Ontario Provincial Policeman) will be coming with me..then there will be Mom, Aunt Muriel and sister Sharon and I so it ought to be quite an experience..will take photo's..my SIL Kim was to join us but her mother is dying (she took a massive stroke over the weekend)! Kim went and did all the funeral arrangements with her sister so it's a waiting game, only way we wouldn't go to the workshop is if Kim's mom dies then of course we'd be at a funeral home..big spoons? hmmm make a butterfly with those...done the same method only you cut different design for wings..go for it..
Vicki, you have me smilling, know what having plans 'in my head' can lead to...lol A woman and her plans can be quite dangerous..but am sure whatever you plan, it will be lovely..how come you can't seem to find pkgs. of 'wave pettunias'..looked all over in my travels on the weekend and no luck?? are they a specialty item..
Do you girls do your own hanging planters or do you just purchase them...I need about 10 large ones and about 2 mega ones (like yours Shar) and wondered if it was worth the effort to make my own?
Oops just saw sister Sharon on MSN..said she had another big battle with DS Brian (40 yrs. old) and told him to leave..she has bouts of depression and this is hitting her hard..she thinks she's let him down and he says he'll do something to himself..know you can't let them get away with almost murder because they lay a guilt trip on you..she says Ross (Mathews dad) who is Brian's boss, called 3 times to say he didn't go to work for several day and he'd have to replace him if it didn't change...what a mess..
Betty Wave petunia seeds can only be bought in catalogs. If you go that route. Make sure they are petteted because they are so small.
It is also cheaper to make you own hanging bakets. Especially depending on what you plant. Regular petunias are a 6 pack for about $1.25. There's a hanging basket. Price of hanging planter 0 if you saved last years. Price of new soil is whatever you pay.
If you start your own it takes longer to get the size of the greenhouse but they have already done that for you.
Thanks Vicki..I almost passed out, last week while at Canadian Tire I picked up a seed packet, (can't for the life of me remember the name of the flower) anyway, I opened the main package and it had an internal package so I opened it up, look inside and there couldn't have been more than 5 miniature seeds AND I paid $2.29 for the pkg. imagine..
Looking all over for castor beans as well..I know/I know they are poisonous, but I have an area that it needs this plant...
This message was edited Apr 9, 2008 11:24 AM
Oh yes those wave also are 10-15 seeds for around $3. I think castor bean are also in the catalogs. Can't recall ever seeing them in the store.
Try one of the seed threads and see if anyone had any!
Oh, I forgot to put my best, worst, learned for yesterday:
Best: finally got the grass cut and the yard looks great!
Worst: dog + cut grass = &%$#@*
Learned: Blond colored dog walking, rolling and digging on nice green grass will turn lovely shade of green with a tinge of mud color. Only do this on or around St. Patrick's Day and ONLY if you feel the need to show off to your neighbors, a green dog!
Sounds as though Murphy is at it again Jeannine...are you going goating this weekend? know you had it outon Easter..we won't get to put the 'Foxy Lady' in much before May 24th long weekend...
I've fallen asleep twice here this morning...don't you just hate it when someone walks in or calls and you get awaken??? can't believe some people..lol
Should rest, I teach painting again tonight..how come Wednesday evenings seems to come so quickly...won't say that tomorrow when I've $$$ to spend on something nice for ME.
Edited to read...
Vicki, going to go find out who sells seeds in my area..must be a provider somewhere...
This message was edited Apr 9, 2008 12:38 PM
Betty,
Just FYI-----
All the seeds, by all the companies that HD sells are automatically reduced by 40%. There is quite a selection.
If you can't find Castor bean--maybe a good Elephant ear will fill the bill....
Gita
elephant ear Gita..do you think they grow in 5b zone? I'll check it out..apparently HD comes in 3 sizes of stores...1 - in major cities i.e. Toronto, 2 - smaller store in areas such as Barrie and then in small town the smallest of them all, so lots of things we have to order from the main stores..so, am hoping to stop in Barrie one night because their garden center has more to offer...I'll look for them..maybe Walmart as well..
Betty, I have castor beans...maybe even some seeds left over. I have errands to run this afternoon, but will look tonight. BUT...can they be mailed to Canada from here?? since it is poisonous.....
Castor beans are good to keep animals away. And a bean down a mole hole is a good way to get rid of them. You might not have moles there, but I do here.
Later
Betty, no goating this weekend - no boating either! LOL! You still asleep!
DS has his first baseball game Friday night so I'm excited to start these back up! I'm hoping the weekend will be decent weather so I can get in the yard!!! The sun has finally come out about an hour ago!!! Thank you LORD! My seritonian levels were quite low!!!
