what have you bought so far? part 4

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I was bad and bought bulbs from Booming Bulbs yesterday. I ordered saffron crocus that will come this summer for Fall blooming (25), two different daff mixtures (25 of each) and some yellow allium (25). Jeez, the alliums were only 10 ¢ each - how could I not buy them? I should have more room for bulbs when I am not growing an entire yard full of garlic! (I wonder if the neighbors are waiting for my garlic to flower since it is coming up with the daffs?)

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Oh, you found saffron crocus!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Hmm... They sent me saffron crocus in the fall.
After i'd planted 10, i learned you're supposed to plant them in the spring/summer to bloom in the fall. But they were super cheap, so i threw out the rest.
Those 10 were the 1st things that came up in the late winter/early spring. sigh.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Started to order, but need to pick more stuff to make the shipping worthwhile!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Are you getting any of this order now, Cat? Is it part of a pre-season sale or something?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

They are having a great sale! I'm looking for crocus for next spring and maybe fall too!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

you guys HAVE to read the comment I left about old house gardens in the watchdog... I am soooo taken back by this company

Jo Ann ~
Do you have all the plant babies you need, or are you looking for more? If you are looking for more varieties, would you please post a list? Perhaps we can help fill up your garden.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

What is the easiest way to start seeds early? Not absolutely most successful, just simple and it will work 1/4 to 1/3 of the time maybe.
i am all stressed trying to figure out where to put these little plastic peat pellet greenhouses i have that the cats won't get to them & where they will get sun.
i was looking at jiffy pots and seed starting mix at HD today, but can you plant those straight into the garden or container when they are big enough? i have heard different things.
i do not have lights and i wouldn't have anywhere to put them or money to buy them anyhow.
Can't i just plant them in something - peat or mix or potting soil - and put them out in the daytime and bring them in at night?
This is too complicated and i have no room.
arrrgh.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Allison - great review and how nice that Scott took time to write you a note with instructions. Sounds just like how to plant dahlias - when the soil (not air) is warm - 55 degrees is ideal.

Jo Ann - I agree with Candyce. Let us know what other plants are on your wish list.

Amy - I have no experience with cats but bringing the plants in and out at this time of year probably wouldn't even give you 25% success.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

sigh.
i think i wasn't cut out for this part.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

There's no point breaking your heart by encouraging you since between the cats and no place to safely keep the mini greenhouses you have enough going on already.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

heehee. sorry. i guess i do sound kinda pathetic.
i just want to be growing things and i am so sick of waiting for it to be warm enough!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'm sure we're all eager for warmer weather and not the rain in the forecast. Maybe you could check out all the great seeds you could sow directly in another 6 weeks - cosmos, cleome, etc.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

You'd think that after this past winter, we would be able to wait for six more weeks. Somehow, though, it's difficult to be patient.

Brentwood, NY(Zone 6b)

Here's a picture of the open box from my VanBourgandien order. And this link http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/m/LIGladLover/ should theoretically take you to my blog where I posted more pictures of the order. I figured that would be easier than clogging up the thread with them. So far I'm very pleased. Now if they all bloom to description I'll be a really happy gardener. :>

Sorry about the link screw-up.

I had to share this pic. It *was* my linen closet but I've taken to calling it my bulb closet. I really don't have any place else to store them. The two grocery bags on the lower shelf are filled with bags of bulbs as well.

the order looks nice.... enjoy!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

You want a list? Guess you think I'm that organized. I fly by the seat of my pants.Sallying forth with a vague image of "the plan" at which point I get inspiration when I see something I never planned on- - which means I don't end up with what I planned at all.LOL
Here is what I have comming from nurseries and DG gardeners ( may the sun be not too hot for them while gardening)
.( my garden isn't as big as some of yours) and I plan on annuals to tuck in while the perennials mature. I have a full sun area under my south facing livingroom window which -for now is my forcing area until mid May. Caladiums and Cannas
I had planned some reds because there are two Flame Lilies there , I aslo planned Crocosmia "hot mix from Willow Creek I think. noticed it's where the hose comes from the house. I will have to do some fancy design work around that.
Penstamon cobaea?
Monks Hood
Crocosmia
Acanthus
Verbascum ( never planned on it--saw it -had to have it)
Papaver (a collection)
hellebores niger
Hellebores 30" tall cant remember -- has palm shaped leaves.

I would really love
Fall Aster
Balloon Flower
Bergenia
Baptesia a white one if there are any otherwise the blue would be great
Goats Beard
or anything you have that wouls suite that area
The biggest garden is new and bare and only part sun part shade
This is the new garden southwest facing.

I can add to the daylily box a blue fall aster and Hosta Plantaginea, the mother of all fragrant hostas. It has a heavenly scent and a lovely flower.

go for it!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

OMG...did you say you wanted Hosta? dmail me with you address...give me about 3-4 weeks for everything to break dormancy. I need to rehome all of the hostas around my front porch this year (said porch is being replaced) and want to get a jump on it. I know I can separate them, but there is also variegated Solomon Seal growing amongst the Hosta. I have several named, and several not named varieties. When they start to leaf out over the next few weeks, I can take pics, send them to you, and you can tell me which ones you would like! Hope that helps out a bit. I also have astilbe coming out my...well, you know. I would not be sad to part with a few of them also. How about a white bleeding hart? It simply will not die, no matter I do to it.
Let me know...

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I can vouch for the Hosta Plantaginea..it's WONDERFUL!!!

I went to Blooming Bulbs and ordered some fall planting bulbs...crocus!
5 Tulip - Double Early-Carlton-Abba
15 Daffodil-Ice Follies
10 Crocus-Purple
15 Crocus-Pickwick-Striped
15 Crocus-Mixed
15 Species Crocus-Blue Pearl (Chrisanthus)
15 Crocus-Prins Claus
5 Snowdrops-Early Snowdrops
25 Glory-of-the-Snow-Chionodoxa

Then while picking up my medicine the other day I spied these and had to have them....
3 Astilbe ~ 'Red Sentinel'
3 Astilbe ~ 'Amethyst'
8 Gladiolus ~ 'Blue Isle'
8 Gladiolus ~ 'Flowersong'

After getting these all ordered...the UPS guy dropped off a few boxes of lilies. Both my draws in the frig are full, see?
I have some down in the basement but will need to go to my DD house and hi-jack her frig draws now! LOL

I need a White Astilbe to go with the Red one now!! Anybody recomend a good white one??

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Bridal Veil.

You're going to have a big job of planting this spring, Pixie!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Pirl...I was looking at Bridal Veil, Snowcap, Diamond and Snowdrift.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You will be planting non-stop for about four months, Celeste!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I like the ones, like Bridal Veil, that gently drape. I have all kinds and the perfectly erect ones are nice but the graceful ones win my heart every time.

Ok Pirl.....you sold me!! LOL
Yes Victor, I know. I really didn't need to get sick, now im weak and have a ton to do.
Hopefully help will come from those I gave birth to!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh my Pixie you are going to be very busy indeed. I hope you feel better in a few days and the sun may come back out by then. I have put Bridal Veil on my list too Pirl. :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You're going to need an army, Celeste.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Poor Celeste!
Just when she needs help the most, she is under the weather!
Get better, but get better slowly so that you don't relapse. That would just NOT do!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

She doesn't need the help now - too early for her. She'll need it starting in a couple of weeks!

Lowell, MA(Zone 6a)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'd like to hear first-hand experience before trying it.
