I get so excited over S. cardinalis 'Innocent'.......camera please!
What's Bloomin' 3
WOW ladies...........just LOVELY Sinns :)
Cindy, thank you for the compliment on my strep. It is a NOID and I love her too. Gail shared her with me and if I remember right, I think she grew it from seed :)
GREAT pictures today ladies! Can't wait to see your new buds open up :)
Kim
This is a hoot, ladies! Kim told me to start rooting little cuttings in straight perlite in a zip lock bag, so I did! I had just a few little cuttings of this ivy good for terrariums, so I put them in a zip lock bag of perlite and forgot about her at the back of the gro light shelf.
Take a look! She has so many roots I can't get the perlite off of them without breaking them badly. I think I am going to take a lot of columnea, aesychanthus and nematanthus cuttings and do the same.. This is a great way to start small cuttings, Kim.
Thanks for the advice
From now on that's all I'm using is straight perlite or perlite/vermiculite mix :)
I started a sucker of an AV on 2/16 in straight perlite, vermiculite and yesterday (just over a month) I took it out of the pot. There were SO many roots!
I find that it's the BEST way to root columnea, aeschynatanthus, nematantus and even chirita :) From now on that's all I'll use :)
Those look GREAT Gail!
Congratulations!
Kim
Ok.......smarty pants (LOL). Your plant is awesome looking Jan. Wow, can you ever grow those sinnningias!
I found out from Mauro how to open those seeds..........just tap to get the seeds on one side and just cut the one end and dump them out...........do you suppose i am just a little slow??????????
I have a lot of strep babies just starting to bloom.......bad pics because there is too much light under the gro lights
OOOOH Gail, your babies are just stunning! I can't get over how well they do for you! Just Amazing.
I LOVE that fantasy one. Fantasies are my FAVORITES! I think it may be Bristol's Pajama Party but I could be wrong.
You really have a knack for them!
WOW WOW WOW my friend.
Doing the happy dance with you.............hope I don't step on your toes while we dance together my friend as I am truly NOT graceful. Me and Julia could be twins *lol*
Happy Easter Everyone........May your lives be full of family, friends, good food and memories made today.
If you're like me and prefer to "lay low" on the holidays.......May your life be full of plants, good food, a little music or your favorite TV show lineup :)

Your Mona Lisa is VERY pretty :) Mine is in the ICU. I took her out of the EA soil this weekend and she is pouting big time.
You have SUCH a nice setup!
Nice to see you :)
Kim
Good morning ladies! Well ... not so warm and toasty here this morning! We had a freaky cold front come through and it got down to 41 here last night! I moved orchids and hoyas inside and just threw blankets over everything else out on the deck. Very unusual cold spell for this time of year for us! We've had daytime temps in the mid 80's and nights in the low to mid 60's so this was a bit of a shock! I can't complain though ... 40's don't bother me ... it's when we get down in the 30's that I want to hibernate. It is chilly this morning but beautiful and sunny!
I wasn't on line much at all last week. Hubby was home all week (Spring Break at the college) so we got a lot of stuff done out in the yard! We had hoped to take the boat out a time or two but were so busy with yard work that we never got a chance to go boating. I dug up about a dozen large hibiscus and 6 huge (really huge!) thorny asparagus ferns from both sides of the house and hubby just planted sod there. He also helped me clear out two large flower beds .... they were full of weeds. We've had more weeds this year than we can remember in the 33 years we've been in this house - all over the yard and in all the flower beds. Hubby dethatched the lawn and put down weed stuff with fertilizer and I transplanted a few knockout roses and a couple of other things. I trimmed trees and shrubbery all the way around the perimeter of the back yard and had a ton of yard debris. Gave my neighbor a sapling maple tree that I've had sitting in a pot for a few years and a knock out rose I couldn't fit in, along with a couple of other plants I couldn't find a place to plant. We worked out in the yard for 8 straight days and my body sure is feeling it! I'm glad it's all done except for a couple of spots where we need to get more sod down. All I will have to do now is mow once a week! There's still a pile of red sand to shovel and spread on the lawn but I think I will let hubby do that in his spare time ... I'm too achy to do any more for a couple of days at least! LOL. DH gives final exams the end of April and then he will be off until the end of June! I need to get a Honey Do list started so he can keep busy while he's off .... he hates being idle! I'm sure we will take the boat out a few times and also hope to visit some family while he's off but he will want things to do around the house too.
Well, this isn't a Gessie but I found it hiding behind stuff on the desk - very, very dry, poor thing. An Anthurium with a little bloom.
Beautiful lipsticks Lin and I adore your episcia blooming so pretty...sounds like you and hubby worked your tails off..makes me ache just thinking about all that work..lol..bet your place looks so nice tho..well worth the effort..now a few days just for you seems in order : ))
Edited to add: Lin..Is that a Dischidia Million Hearts in the picture with your rasta? Very pretty plant! Reason I ask is..have you ever seen any blooms on it? I have a big ol hanging basket of that..had it now about 3 years and I love the foliage but have never seen a bloom. Are they supposed to bloom do you know?

Maybe Lin will come back on. I don't see a dischidia Million Hearts, Nancy..........
All you young ones out there, lift all you want while you can. I used a ladder Saturday to climb up and hang big heavy hoyas in the trees and knew the moment I hurt my leg and knee. Being determined to finish I did! But my leg and knee kept hurting so I went to the doctor today to find out I had torn the muscle in the 'ham string' (that was what he called it......ham string).
He asked me what in the world was I doing on a ladder carrying that much weight on one leg (as you step up the ladder with your basket)................he said it like I was 85 and not 65!
Now I can't lift more than 10 lbs for 3 weeks.
I will just play with my inside plants for awhile..........I have some lipstick bloom, too......(on the porch)
My goodness ... Gail, you sure can grow girl! Your plants are just awesome ... all of them! Look at all the blooms on that Lipstick plant! Is it under grow lights or out on your porch? I'm curious as to what light situation that one is in! Really vivid color ... beautiful!
Oh Nancy ... Nope, that's not Million Hearts behind Rasta there in that pic. It's one of those Exotic Angel plants - Peperomia 'Isabella'. Tomorrow I will take a close up pic and post it here.
Lin's plant in question looks like a Peperomia to me. Maybe prostrata or ,well, I'm blanking on the one with all greem leaves. Maybe rubella? Anyway... C'mon Lin- clear up the confusion!
Looks like we cross posted Lin! Well, I was close!!! Isabella not rubella- that would be a disease??!LOL
LOL Diane .... I remember having rubella(German Measles) as a child!
Lin, that one is pretty right now because she has never left the front porch with the south sun.............now that the poly is off the porch, they are taking a good beating in the wind.
I think the aeschytanthus, columneas and codanthes seem to do best with a cool (50 degree weather long enough to make them bloom)..........then they start to droop by the end of May......At least that is what is working for me.
i think you will be very happy next year to use the poly around your pool area. No more of that changing climates and temps all the time going inside and outside or blankets ,etc.....
It is amazing that the hoyas and other plants which only got a little bit of southern direct sun all winter have bloomed this much. (once again cooler weather seems to induce the blooming) I never ever brought an orchid in and the phals are blooming away.
I will take my camera out maybe tomorrow and show you new hoya blooms.
can't leave this thread without some kind of picture..........let me look
Begonias are all blooming right now.
Well that will teach me to go on the computer without my glasses gail and diane! lol..I can see plain as day now your plant isn't a dischidia Lin...
Gorgeous pics as always gail...your lipsticks and begonias are awesome.
Gail: My Nuns Orchid is losing the flowers too. I am new to this plant ... just bought mine right before you got yours. I thought maybe the flowers were dropping because of the cooler nights but I think it's probably just normal .... they usually bloom in spring so maybe they are finishing their bloom cycle. Here's some good info to read: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/orchid_gardening/35566
I know how you love to propagate, so scroll down and under the little icons of the two little photo's, click on page 2! I've got to try that ... had no idea you could get new plantlets by laying the old flower spike in sand!
mite have to get one of those. lol
mrsbonnie
Lin.......I can't find where you are telling me to go for propagating these nun orchids..........can you help me more? Thanks
Gail, it was just a little thing on page two of that article. Let me see if I can copy and paste it here:
For the growers that love to propagate, this is the one orchid for you. After the orchid has finished blooming, lay the old flower spike on a sand-filled tray and half cover it with sand. Keep moist and in a shady area. If successful, about 2 months later you will have new plants appearing from the nodes of the spike. Pot them up and give them to your friends!
Woohoo ... it worked! Sounds easy enough to do ... I am going to try it ... maybe I will have some nun orchid babies to give away!
I can't wait to go buy some sand and try this.........thank you so much Lin!!!!!!!!!!!! I am waaay excited about this project..........
