What's Bloomin' 3

(Zone 1)

Oooh, I love when y'all post photo's of your Strep's. I am in Strep envy because they don't live long for me.

MullettMan: That is a beauty!

I just picked up AV Green Ice cause I noticed the plastic pot was broken on the edge. I went to pull off some wayward leaves and spent flowers and found this. Look at the bottom of this pot! Think I see a repotting job coming tomorrow or Monday ...

And the AV Typsy Vespa I started from just a single leaf... nuzzled in among some of my Hoyas.

Oh, I've never heard of that one ... love it. Is that what is considered a wasp flower?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't know where to start commenting. First, Lin, that orchid is so healthy and beautiful!
I am going to copy you and plant my mandevillea in a hanging basket. I tried to put it in a big pot with a trellis and it won't take off......i give up!! So to the store for some like you have which are healthier than mine!

Ok Mulletman! Please do a trade with me. I have strep leaves coming out the kazu......just potted up 18 more babies tonight. I am in love with wasps..........please dmail me if you want to trade leaves of all kinds..........or just wasps and streps?????????
I just ordered 30 av leaves tonight from a wonderful lady with a wonderful selection of semi minis and trailers. Love to grow from any leaf!

Her website is called:
http://www.bloominjungle.com/
She is one of the nicest people I have met online..............

Wow!! So many pics added here today! I am loving them all!! Awesome pics everyone!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh Nancy!!! I have been wanting to contact you to ask if you grow streps by leaf?

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Well I TRY Gail..lol..still learning! You sure do have great luck with them!

Charlotte, NC

Plantladylin,
I don't have a clue :) Maybe if RainGazer (I got this from her) pops her head in here and sees this she'll shine some light on the subject.

Here's an AV Optimara 'Anna Belle' that started out as a single leaf as well.

good NANCY..........try straight perlite and vermiculite if you have trouble with strep wedge rotting................keep them domed until the leaves are rooted.....about 2 weeks.

Mulletman.......Vespa is a wasp and a good one at that.........

South, TX

WOW, what a treat to see all the new pictures.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Thank you Bonnie,I never heard of a smallst sinningia,I learn something new everyday!

Cool pictures everyone!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Gail,I usually use straight perlite for rooting with pretty good luck .Maybe I will give the vermiculite a try and see how that goes...

Lin,your Green Ice is gorgeous!! Oh my..by the looks of your pot it does look like a new pot is in order .It grew itself right out!! : )

Mulletman..I love Vespa..neat looking plant!

Mrsbonnie..I never realized there were so many different sizes of sinningias....constantly learning here too

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

nancy, I meant perlite and vermiculite mixed evenly about starting av leaves or strep leaves. I now use perlite , vermiculite and soil-less mix for strep leaves but you really have to be careful using the soil less mix that they don't rot.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

hmmm...wonder if using straight perlite for rooting is why it always takes so blasted long for me to get babies??LOL..Live and learn I tell ya...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Don't use perlite to root .............there are much better ways..........I am looking forward to packing up goodies!

Is Rachel's Reflections still on site? she propagates avs in perlite and vermiculite.......

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Gail..I will have to check that out.Always looking for a better way here : )

Williston, ND

Hi Gail
Rachel passed away,if its the same Rachel Im thinking of,she ran the vr groups

JIM

Williston, ND

cedarnest, you can use straight perlite too, check out this site, good info

http://www.streptocarpus-info.com/streppropagation.html

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Jim! Reading over the link it looks like I have been doing ok then..It always seems to work for me..just seems to take me forever to see babies. I have a tendency to lose my patience..lol... so thought I might try other ways to maybe helps speed the process : o

Williston, ND

although you dont need it,try some rooting hormone on them,I dip mine in it and get babies quicker,
JIM

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Glad you are here, Jim!!! I forgot that I always use a lot of rooting hormone........sorry about that Nancy. Jim, you don't root your streps in perlite, do you???????? I saw that on the strep site................do you REALLY just use perlite, Jim???????

I am reluctant to change what works for me.............with avs I just use perlite and vermiculite............with streps I would use for example:2 cups perlite, 2 cups vermiculite and 1 cup soil less mix and they give me babies.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok...........just for fun I am going to try just the perlite and compare the length of time to get babies and see how healthy they are.
Going to go try it now.......and pot them up................in straight perlite.........fun fun fun!

NO I am not going to change methods of rooting. I know what works for me and am not getting tempted to try something new just for fun.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have Rob's Antique Rose and it doesn't look like yours.
Maybe you ought to go to the AVSA page and look under Optimara as it is most likely an Optimara.

(Zone 1)

LOL Gail ... Scroll down this page, Dimmer's plant might be this one - Streptocarpus Antique Rose:

http://www.streptocarpus-info.com/tablea.html

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh my goodness..........I thought she had an av............
Gee, you are right ladies. Looks just like strep Antique Rose. Did you buy that locally? I had heard that Walmart was going to start selling streps in Florida.

(Zone 1)

Ooooh ... I have never, ever seen a Strep for sale at Wal-Mart, HD, Lowes or Target! We only have two nurseries left in town and I have never seen Strep's for sale there either! Our nurseries carry mostly landscape plants, very few house plants! I will definitely keep an eye out ... we have 3 Wal-Mart Super Centers within a 10 mile radius and I am usually at Wal-Mart at least 3 times a week! I always park by and go through the Garden Center! LOL ... my mama always said "Old habits are hard to break"! That's a habit I don't want to ever break! Will let y'all know if I ever see Strep's for sale!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have been looking down here and haven't seen them, but i was told that they were already available in Florida at Walmart. Everyone start looking (LOL)

( Kim) Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I went and got this plant free they were going to thought it out.

Lin that is were I got the name but than I went though all the letter and came up with a few more
Northwoods Pink Ruffle andNorthwoods Ruffle Freeble so it close but I did see one that I do have to get in the Strep and that is called Musean Of Art its very close to black,
I am going to start a blub container I have ordered Black and white blubs so I just can't wait to start to plant they will be shiped out on the 16 of April so I think I will start in house
Dimmer

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Where did you get the plant, Dimmer?

Hi all! Gorgeous pics, as always! I've only stopped in for a minute, but hope to be back on later to type some replies and post some pics. I've got a bloomer or two, and went to an Orchid show over the weekend, so want to share my new treasures. :o)

While I'm here, I thought I'd mention, this thread is waaay long, and even on cable broadband it took a minute for it to load for me. Might wanna think about starting a new one. ;o)

See y'all later! :o)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok..............moving to a new thread titled April Blooms
