Best/Worse/What did I learn today? Pt.36 Visit with Friends

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

seed--

What zone are you? Why is it not posted by your name--like all the rest of us?????

I am zone 7b--it is by my name. It really helps knowing that!

Anyways..........Amaryllis is not really hardy in zones 7 and lower. BUT! Being the rebel that I am--I planted 2 of them in a south-facing bed about 3 years ago (because I had about 8 pots of them--so what did i have to lose?) --and, LO and behold! It has come up now for 2 Summers and bloomed! What can I say?????

I don't know what to tell you, as I do not know your zone, but--if you want to chance it in a really warm, protected area--GO for it!
AND-even if you have never had it outside for the Summer (WHY NOT??????) -you can, and should, still do it.
I take all of mine outside EVERY Summer and keep them in the sun--feed them--water them--and allow as many leaves to grow on them as They can! This is important! The more leaves--the more "food" will be returned to the bulb as the leaves whither. You may want to read up on all the details of keeping Amaryllis alive--healthy and blooming. Have you tried the Bulb Forum? Probably too long for me to post here.

Basically--It needs a dormant (rest) period in a dark/cool place and then you can repot it--water it--and look for new growth. When you see the new growth--you need to take it "upstairs" in a warmer environment---start watering it and watch for the new flower bud (or leaves) emerging. Then it is--"Que serra--serra!" You may get flower buds--or you may get just leaves. It is just like Tulip and daffodil bulbs......They all need a dormancy to bloom again.

My Amaryllis NEVER bloom around the Holidays! I believe that takes a lot of "controlled" environment to achieve this to sell them at the right time of year--Christmas.....
Mine usually bloom around the beginning of March. This year--they are still sprouting......

See! Ther is a sequence of timing that determines all this!
--WHEN did you take them in to go dormant?
--WHEN did you start watering them again?
--WHEN did you bring them up to warmer room temps. when you saw new growth?

I DO believe that this plant (like X-Mas cacti) really appreciate cooler temperatures--BUT--bright light at the same time. Hard to come by!

My sister--whi lives in Alaska--has a house with windows all around. She has Amaryllis plants that bloom away any time of the year. She has NEVER taken them outside--BUT--hers thrive and bloom in her windows as there is a lot of natural light and the temps at night get quite cool--even inside.

Hope some of this gives you an "overview" as to what to do. I have a lot of printed out material on the "How-TO' on this plant. I could mail it to you?????

Best--Gita

Hi Everyone! Just a quick check in to say cheers and to see what is up. Don't forget, I will be gone for the next 4 days with the fam. I will check back in on Wednesday night. Forgot to take a pic of the greenhouse today but promise I will have one when I get back. Gardener's Supply Comp sells them so you can see the style there. I think they are called "Flowerhouses". Anyway, my tomatoes looked nice and happy in it thisafternoon so I think they will do ok while I'm gone.

Y'all have a wonderful Easter and I'll be thinking about you all!

I will chat back with you on Wed,

Hugs to everyone!

Family just left, of course Greg decided to watch a movie with...took him no longer than 2 sec. to fall asleep so I woke him and told him it was time to go home..kicking me out he says...lol..yep..I want to go to bed..tired/tired..so much food, it's either I burn everything or it turns out wonderful but enough to feed dozens...he enjoys that he always get to take a lemon merangue pie home..Jeff, he likes the blueberry..nice to spoil the kids...we ended up watching the BEE movie that I got the young ones..I managed to stay awake for that..

So it will shortly be 'EASTER'..all the best to your families..will be back to re-read all the posts...

Best of today..having family here for 'Easter'
Worse of today...buying '2' turkeys
What did I learn..pay more attention, not be in such a hurry...lol

We went to church tonight since there are so many visitors on Easter and a sea of crying visitor babies.

Happy Easter all of you that do celebrate it.

I am sitting here reading and listening to my limewire music.

Our bike is a Honda Valkyrie and I have a little yamaha virago too, I had a big Harley but it was too big for me and it was going to get me killed with my short legs. So we sold it.

I see everyone is garden minded at this time of the year and it is almost too much snow and cold for all who have it by this time, you must all get spring fever bad now.

Betty do you still have snow and is it still snowing?

Me again. Nothing exciting has happened since I last posted, so no reports. Well, along with all of the other projects that my husband has, he began doing some weeding in back yard yesterday. The first couple of years that I began gardening he helped out when needed, but wasn't really "in" to it. Last year he became interested and so it help that he now sees things that need doing and does them, instead of me having to ask him to do something.

We will probably just work around in the yard again today. No special plans. I did call my older son and asked him to stop by at some point today because I want to get pictures of granddaughter in her Easter finery.

Well, I have loads of Easter candy sitting around. I will send some home with Ben and family to get it out of here so that I won't end up eating it all. The candy makers sure make the stuff enticing with all the pretty wrap and such. I loved walking through the candy aisle at Walmart last week, such cute things. It is a wonder that I didn't buy even more than I did.

I hope that everyone has a good day.

Happy 'Easter'..thought perhaps my furnace had quit, quite cool in the bedroom but it's because temps have dropped during the night..a bright day is in store for us, but oooohh it's cold, bunny betterhave it's winter coat on...

Just got up, so had a good nights rest...will have breakfast and then out comes the sewing machine..Darlene's husband Mike is getting knee surgery on Friday so I'm putting zippers on both sides of the leg to enable easy opening for treatment..also had 3 beautiful white embroidered pillows on my bed..well Riley thinks its her daily resting place and quite often I have to wash the surface by hand with a cloth..so, bought some velcro, white cotton and will make an opening to easily remove the pillow form to wash the entire casing...then it will be finishing my birdhouse..

Dawn, same amount of snow, with this cold it's not melting any..hard to believe it will be gone even by late April/May...

enjoyed family yesterday so today it's relaxation before my week starts..

Ruby glad your hubby took an interest in gardening..you are so right about Easter goodies, it's amazing how they are made and colored foil protected..and all those cartoon icons that the children love, you just want to buy them all..looking forward to seeing photo's of darling grandaughter...

So off for coffee (trying lactose free milk) - watched everything I ate yesterday, infact Melanie asked me why I wasn't eating - told her I was a little worried about being ill after eating..made myself a little plate - miniscule although I really wanted 'everything' and tummy burnt a bit but not as bad..so guess that's part of the trick..

Do you think that these Easter lilies, if kept till spring are worth planting...bought a container of mums also, will plant them..if they survive till spring..

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Happy Easter to all,
I went to Home Depot yesterday and bought 5 small blooming plants..three are for my DD and DIL's ..two for me.
Got easter candy for my youngest Grandaughters..

I saw my first two robins yesterday afternoon in my backyard....wonderful sign of spring coming..but we still have snow all over. with a few patches of green showing where it had melted. My friend who lives only 5 miles away has crocus coming up in a sheltered spot in the sun under her living room window.

A pretty sunrise ...taken on my vacation.

Cheers,
Carol

Morning Shar, bet Ethan is flying high on the 'sweet train' by now...isn't it marvellous, experiencing Easter with a young one...

Jeannine, hope mom accepted your choice in taking family away for 4 days...am sure she's mellowed by now..

My mom was leaving this morning heading home from Florida so I'll have to make a point of visiting her and stepdad at cottage next weekend..perhaps Friday after my cat scan...

Victoria Harbour, ON

We're all around the computer 'home fires' this morning..all posting at the same time...lol..

Feeling your presence...warmth and toasting good thoughts...

Carol, what a buy on Easter lilies, $2.49 and the were huge..bought birdfeed yesterday and put out several trays but no signs of ANY birds..guess it takes time to entice them, yet, Bernice and Cliff across the street have zillions at the feeders... have fun with family today...

Liz, I'm on my own today, celebrated with the family yesterday..so it's a playday for me..you are not working today are you..when you say you've got to go, hope it's to do something exciting..like a trip to HomeDepot...lol

OOOPS forgot that it's the day of the Lord today so will give thanks for the wonderous things he's provided in our lives...

. my family/friends
. you my extended group of friends

but especially for the miracles I've seen happen of late....

Mathew came home on Saturday to spend Easter with his family, infection seems to be under control..he returns this afternoon to rehabilitation where he'll spend the better part of 6 weeks..but he's alive...

Trevor (who you may remember had a snowmobile accident, not expected to live...well he's also home for this weekend, he is walking with help, he cannot speak, but can write down some thoughts! Trevor ran his father's construction firm, rather large company, well Jerry brought him to the office, and he pointed to certain things, recognized some, so although they are not sure to what extent he'll improve, today he got to spend his Easter with his family...

So I thank you for your prayers, the Lord has heard and answered many of them...

YOU were part of 2 miracles...
Do enjoy your day!

Good morning and happy Easter everyone

Enjoying a quiet Easter day...sunshine streaming through the window..sewing machine set up..got the pillows all done, now for Mike's pants and a few repairs to my favorite lounging/painting/working outfits..why is it we pick an outfit and feel so comfortable in it that we fight to keep it in one piece..I don't care if I have to put numerous patches, not throwing it out..lol

Had told my cousin Barb a few days ago, not to wait to get me the wine glasses for the wedding, don't want it to be last minute...I want to be organized...well, organized I'll be..look what they just dropped off...150 glasses...

Hi everyone. Great news Betty about your great nephew. I bet this is a day for a celebration for the family. I can't imagine how much snow you have, it was like 80 something here.

I did a little more yard work and sat in the yard and tried to visulualize what I want to see from different angles but this is the side I am not planting this year except a tree or maybe some fence roses. I will do some hard scape and that is about it for this part.

I have tougher nuts to crack.

I am so glad we don't fight too Liz. It really is not why we came to this thread. It is a refuge from the drama I think. Betty had someone almost chase her off DG and I think this was what she came up with and it is a great group.

Good morning, well, it's morning, but it's a snowy morning...will it ever end??? A weather specialist was on the other day and said not to get too anxious, we could have about 6 weeksmore of this..so better just pretend it's spring...lol...

Guess everyone will be tired today after all the festivities of the past weekend..know I enjoyed the quiet day to get odds/ends done...

Better get myself upstairs, dressed and ready..
We'll talk when I get to the office..

(Cathy), MO

Good morning all. Hope everyone has a wonderful day. It was below freezing again here last night, but the air was crisp and clear this morning. Felt good!
