Best/Worse/What did I learn today? Pt.36 Visit with Friends

Victoria Harbour, ON

Just got in, Dr' says it's most likely a gallbladder attack..bad one...so gave me meds to ease the burning/pressure in tummy etc. and told me as I've already got a cat scan for Friday that I should keep it and if not that then they'll book a series of other tests..

So I'm home, sunny sunny day, but so cold..I've loads to read and lots to respond to but off to take meds, get into my comfy clothes and will be back later for a gab...

Awww Seed, I didn't realize that I needed that hug, but sure do. I hope that your "blues" will float away soon. Yes, it is very odd to check in here and not having Betty writing. Yes, we are all concerned. Something is not quite right about the swelling going on in her belly. I hope that they get to the bottom of it today. Thanks Cat and all who are encouraging me about my son Tucker. Yes, I have faith that things will be okay for him, I just hate to watch him struggle.

Oh yeah, I did some online shoe shopping a while ago. I had fun. I think that I bought 4 pairs of shoes. Well, one of them was more like a flip flop. I don't know if I wasted my money or not, but also bought a special cream that is supposed to restore poor circulation. I am hoping that is really does help. I also purchased some insoles that are supposed to with posture.

Earlier today I fixed cole slaw and a pot of beefaroni. I am getting a bit hungry now and should scoot along. You all have a great Good Friday.

Ruby

Crozet, VA

Oh good!!! Betty is home. Good to hear that you went to see the doctor. Yes, it sure does sound like a bad attack. I hope that the medication helps that he gave you and that before too long, you will be back and feeling the same chipper self as you normally are.

Thanks for checking in Betty.

Ruby

Glenview, IL

Oh Betty, Thank you...so glad doc gave you some medicine. I hope too it will work quickly.

Ruby...thank you, I'll be ok. Hey forgot to say, I am glad to hear about your Christmas Cactus. I've heard they also bloom at Easter. What color do you have? Hope your cream works for you too, enjoy all the shoes...be honost you just have to fill up your clean closet, ROFL.

Been playing birdfeeder in between visitors...June just dropped in with a big of fur, 2 cut teddies - no instructions but an arms an arm and a leg is a leg right..am sure Laura will figure it out..She also brought 4 books for me to photocopy patterns for you Laura..so rest well, I'll be sending this batch off...

The birdfeeder is quite simple really...and one can indeed do it in a morning (with the right tools) I'm going to end up painting mine white..

So not sure who asked for step by step photo's but here are those I have to date..have to purchase 'v' trim tomorrow and roof shingles then I'll be reatdy to paint..

bead of glue and bradnailing the panels..

Mistake, mistake, well not really ... suggestion for you..when I was making the hearts I will trying to drill each of the 2 holes to make the upper part of the heart 'close' together...looked a lot nices when you drill and leaves maybe an 1/8th between the 2 drilled holes, then when you use the jigsaw to make the bottom 'v' you just notch out the piece - makes a perfect heart..also I'd make a template for the heart part...

So now in the morning I'll be off to purchase door with stained glass insert/groceries and a must will be to pick up the materials I need to finish this birdfeeder...

More to come on the step-by-step...lol think Liz you were the one who wanted info and perhaps Judy...

Ruby my grandmother always had a Christmas cactus but it never bloomed for christmas..always for Easter..there would almost 100 flowers on it..I've one but it's never bloomed..perhaps I'll purchase another and try my luck again..maybe there is not enough sun where I have it located..hope the insoles work for the shoes..nothing worse than having sore feet..my mouth is watering..I absolutely love beef/tomato maccoroni in fact I had thought of making it for supper but it's already 5 so might just leave it for another day...

Judy 10" of snow is a lot..don't send it east...bitter cold out today but sunny..I can feel the temps lowering though so it's time to turn the furnace up...

Doc, Master Gardener yikes hope you didn't see those plants that I had hanging around 'dead'...I'd be getting the wherefor and whereto for sure...threw them all out (except 2 geranium plants that are doing well (better not talk to loud-winter's not over) and I'll replace them shortly..

Brother Bernie and his wife Charlene just left..also came to visit so it's been a rather nice day...but am tired so won't be long I'll be thinking of cleaning the mess I've just done..gee whiz..spent all last weekend tidying and lordy you should see the disaster area...help/help!!!

Carol, what a beautiful B & B...maybe I'd better give up my thoughts on mine...

Thank goodness the only area that I mess up is the craft room but I would imagine with all that cutting there will be dust all over upstairs...

Better get going, cousin Barb just called and is bringing me wine glasses..6 to be exact so I can do them differently for them to decide what pattern they most like and then I'll be doing about 150 of them...that should keep me busy one weekend this summer...want them here so when I decided to do them in 10's I won't have to go searching for them..infact..I could bring them to work and do..would keep me out of mischief...

So be back later..going to see what's to eat (or) if restaurant next door is open..I know, I know no deep fried foods but they have lovely salads...

Betty,

What we all call a "Christmas cactus" is actually a "Thanksgiving cactus" and usually blooms at that time. Yes, there may be a repeat bloom around Easter.....

There is a true "Christmas Cactus". It looks quite similar to the Th-Giv. one, but the leaves don't have all those little "spikes" on them--they are more rounded.....

Then there is also the Easter (or Star) cactus, This is sold around Easter (forced--I am sure), but if you have it as a H-Plant, it will bloom in Late Spring-early Summer. I have had one for years. I keep it semi-dormant throughout the winter and then put it outside with all the rest of the plants. This winter--it looks all 'done in"! All limp and sagging. May have to do some drastic surgery--OR--chuck the whole thing. If I do that--i will surely take cuttings to root of any good parts left.

Happy Easter to you all!!!!!! Here is my Easter (Star) Cactus in bloom.
That feathery looking plant to the right are my "Climbing Onion" fronds.

Hi,
Well, I got off at three today, grr took 1 hour to drive home. But to my wonderous eyes, behold a true sign of spring..ROBINS, un mistakable orange red belly flew right in front of me...Talk about a pick me up!!

I'll go see...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Judy, you got off at 3..don't you all get "Good Friday" off? long weekend for Easter???

Did post on the gazebo birdfeeder just up a little...probably 1 hr. to finish it off tomorrow ..have the 2nd one all sketched, cut ready to put together..want to paint both at same time..1 mess...

Are you going to the cottage Judy to see what Steve's been up to?? Bet it's lovely...can't wait to see photo's..

Well this time I AM going upstairs, tidied up...it's time for rest and relaxation...lol - and I WILL!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Betty--if you keep your Thanksgiving cactus inside all year, it may not bloom much. Then again--some people do it and it flowers away!
Mine all go outside with all the rest of the plants middle of may. This Ch. Cactus likes filtered light outside. NO direct sun! Remember! it is NOT a desert cactus! it is a "Jungle cactus" used to growing under the canopy of the rain forests...
Water and fertilize as you would anything else while outside
......
The thing about it setting bloom buds is---you need to leave it outside when the weather starts getting chilly--but NOT freezing! Like nights in the upper 40's. Let the cacti stay outside for another couple of weeks. By that time, all the tips should have tiny bloom buds on them. When you bring it in (sunny window now!), in a matter of a week, they will start opening up.
Warning!.....do not rotate the cactus in any way once the buds start elongating! In their effort to turn towards the light-source, many of them will just fall off if you do.

Repotting must have certainly had some negative effect on this plant. Did you HAVE TO????? Chr. Cati can grow happily in a root-bound state for years!
Watch your watering indoors! Not too much!

End of "Plant Class" for today!.......:o)

Sorry, Judy..
I have been trying to get ready for my boys, they decided to come in late tonight instead of tomorrow, just now finished, got the eggs boiled for Ethan to color tomorrow, got a ham baking, just little Ms. Suzy Homemaker. But I am so tired I can't move!!
You sure sound good!!

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi all - Very tired this PM. I went to work early - 7:15 and since I'm out on vacation after today, I decided to make the day end early! So I left at 12:00! I love my boss! He left right after me! Anyway, got home and checked on my lettuces - which I was able to cover up last night with the plastic. Some looked a little wilted so gave them some water. Then remembered that I bought one of those mini popup greenhouses from a garage sale over a year ago and have never used it. So I got that out of the shed and "popped" it up and decided to stake it doen in one odf the veggie beds to hold the packs of tomatoes I bought yesterday. I bought 'Patio', Early Girl' 'Better Boy' and 1 other I can't remember the name of. I also bought some dill, parsley, 2 grasses - 'Fiber Optic Grass' and one other one (sorry - can't remember that one either) and finally a pretty Myrtle plant. I put them all in the greenhouse and hopefully they will do ok tonight. I'll take a pic tomorrow so you can see what I've got.

Well, off to sleep now. Did I say I was tired.....?

Betty, glad you went to the doc! YOu take care of yourself!!!

Hugs!

Who has received stuff from their new secret Pal this mont?. Mine is on the ball, she has sent me like three parcels already. I skim so what I am really trying to find out is did my secret Pal get something from me yet?

We went on a long motorcycle ride today for 4 hours so finally the wind was not blowing and it was not cold either the direction we went.

Took a break from gardening with my back all crooked. I swear it is from my right hip that makes my back out. I think it is really a hip problem. This hard scape and digging the three hundred pound clay soil up to ammend it as I plant something, is for the birds. I need a little tractor or bobcat.

Glenview, IL

Hey...Shar! how exciting! is that!

Well sure hope you'll share pics.

I am so excited yipppee Sping has Spung!!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning, you guys are on a roll, can tell that by the posts..

Liz, off to HD and get that wood..easy project..promise..

I knew I had posted before..went back to find it...

A GAZEBO for the birds

Simple for people to build/easy for their feathered friends to love!

This fly-through bazebo-style bird feeder has a simple yet attractive 'hatbox' design. The materials cost under $20.00 and all of them are available at local home centers. It only takes part of an afternoon to build, without any fancy tools. If you want, you can build several in assembly style.

Start by cutting the top and bottom panels and the 6 walls.

First cut two 12 1/2" x 14 1/2" rectangles out of 3/4 inch plywood. Most home centers will cut the plywood to size for you... (know they did at Home Depot on Sunday morning for me) Not sure if you will be able to see the measurements..but if you take the board with the 12 1/2 " going from left to right, divide in with a pencil mark so the upper will be 6 1/4" and the bottom part 6 1/4"...then turn the board so that 14 1/2 dimensions are going left to right..ok.. go in 3 5/8ths on the left and then the 3 5/8th on the right and mark..you will now have 7 1/4" left in the middle..take a pencil and join the end of 7 1/4 inch line to the middle line you created dividing into 6 1/4 mark .. continue joining and you'll have your hexagon..second one will be easy because you'll just have to trace...remember DO NOT throw away the corner pieces that you cut off to make the hexagon because they will be your roof rafters..they will meansure 12 1/2" x
3 5/8ths" width...

Mark, then cut off the corners as shown in Photo 1-Figure A. Save six of the triangles, which will become the roof rafters a few minutes down the road. Use a jigsaw or circular saw to cut 6 - 10" length x 7 1/4" width pieces for sides...

I took a ruler and market off 2" below for the base where the hearts will be make, I marked off 1" on either side of the 7 1/4" piece then I left 1" on the upper part of the piece..then I just took a bowl and made the rounded angle..worked fine..to make the hearts I'll use a 1/2" drill bit and then make the 'v' and cut it out either with scroll saw or jig saw...once
I cut the 1st one out I'll do it to the other 5...

Assemble walls and rafters...

Since each side of the hexagonal top and bottom is 7 1/4" wide the should fit perfectly..you can either use screws or brad nails for this project..I add a bead of glue to make it stronger...

Now take the 6 triangular corner cutoffs you made earlier and glue and nail them to the top hexagon toserve as your rafters..see photo 5. Center each triangle on the layout lines and make sure the outer tips meet the outer corners of the walls...

Next, shingle the roof...

Use three overlapping layers of 1x6 cedar lap siding for the shingles. Use a protractor to draw the 65 degree angle on the siding, then with a jigsaw with the bevel angle set at 10 egrees tu the first 6 roof panels...photo 6

Set the first row of siding in place, but don't nail anything quite yet..Adjust the panels so the all hang over the walls the same distance and fit pretty uniformly on the rafters. Don't worry to much about the exact fit since the plywood top will keep the water out. With an open-air design, come wind-blown rain is bound the creep in anyway.

Use brad nailer/nails or scres to install the roof panels. 1" hand driven brads work fine as well..

Then cut, fit and nail on the second and thrid rows the same way...i.e. photo 7

Add trim and Hardware...

Cut 7/8 dowels and nail them on the corners i.e. photo 8. Use galvanized screws to mount a ipe flange to the centre of the base. Drill two or more 1/2" holes about 3" apart and cut out the space between them to create a clean out slot. Make the flap for the cleanout slot from a piece of scrap siding and secure it with a screw. Add a few 3/16th inch holes in the base for drainage...

Finally bury a length of threaded pip into the ground, screw the pipe flance and bird feeder onto it and fill it with birdseed..

Dinner is served!

Jeannine, a greenhouse, even though it is a pop us, how wonderful..going to start some of my seeds this weekend..don't want them to get too leggy in the house, so, I would say it's time!

Dawn, wouldn't it have been easier for you to hire a bobcat for 2hrs. and save your back..know you want to do it all on your own, but you know you've a bad back to start with..glad you finally got out on the bike..know you and Greg enjoy your rides...

Judy if you keep being on this up as you have been lately poor Steve is going to give you some downers to take each morning with your coffee...lol...

Getting ready to hit the stores as soon as they open..Jeff is unable to come down with the boys because of hockey tournaments and Greg/Mel and the boys said they were coming today, but it's going to be a sunny/cold day out there, could be the last day they can use their snowmachines, so I'll call early and tell them if they want they can go riding and we'll either order in Chinese or make it another day..then I'll just pick up easter goodies and a movie for the boys...

Must make a stop at Home Depot though..then it's back for a quiet day at home...so nice to enjoy....

So must get myself prettied up..load of laundry to iron then I'm off for a few hours this morning to beat the masses...

It is Easter for you all right?

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Morning all,

Gita,
Thanks for the info on Christmas/Easter cactus. I have a light pink one that is in bloom now..most blooms it has ever had.
Betty you must be feeling better if you are going out shopping..I must go out and get a few goodies too.
I will have Easter dinner with my daughter and family tomorrow.

Yesterday, I went to visit a friend for dinner. We used to work together..both retired now. She keeps in touch with some of the gals still working at the hotel, so we got all caught up.

Here are some pretty blooms ..taken at Brookgreen Gardens

SP I am so sorry I have not been on the ball! Got my gift and it was a happy surprise! An Easter Bunny Pez(who says we can't be kids?) and a spray that smells like Cotton Candy. Brought back memeories of when I was a kid and we use to go to a store called the Log Cabin(Built from Logs) and they made CC and sold it. It was on the other side of town so we didn't get it often but I can remember riding bike to get it! Thank You for bringing back that memeory!

Starzz great picture on a cloudy post snow day here. We got at least 4 inches yesterday. But I consider that lucky as 4 hours south of me they got 8 or more!

today will be quiet. DH had to go to work. They had to move a hoist and he has cement work to do today. But I have seeds to start and have to run to the post office. Maybe finally vacumn or do dishes.

Betty so glad you went to the DR. Have the meds helped? I hate going to the DR. because we now have lousy ins. Your project is coming along nicely. Can hardly wait to see it finished.

Liz she called in sick already? Maybe she really doesn't want to come back to work! Yesterday was busy but not hard if that makes sense. I could get stuff done between customers. So I feel we did good. Sales were decent also and not all Easter!

Judy As stated above we didn't get near the snow of S. Wi. Thank goodness. Ours was bad enough to drive in. What is DH doing that you want to see or have you no idea?

Have to go and make a phone call before I forget.

Crozet, VA

Good morning to everyone - I am slow, slow getting started today. By this time I usually a lot more done than I have this morning. Not sure what is up with that. Oh yeah, found another website and ordered some goodies for myself. I must think it is my birthday or something. This one is Avon.....I haven't used Avon products for so long. I can say that along with frivilous sorts of things that I did buy things that are needed and will be used. I bought some of their insect repellant for use in the garden this summer. I also bought deodorant and lip balm which I use daily, so don't feel too badly about the cost.

Thanks to every one who has sent encouragement about dealing with my son. Liz, it is almost at epidemic stage it seems. For some reason a lot of the kids growing up dont think that they have to have jobs or to go to college. Not sure other than we have spoiled them all of their lives and now they feel entitled to things. Well, the world is going to change his mind about that pretty quickly when he is out on his own. Oh well, at least I am doing better emotionally with it than I thought I would be doing. i suppose since I have already made up my mind what I am going to do, I don't have to waste energy thinking of something to do.

I still have a few things on my list that I need to do today. I have to go to grocery store for one thing. I was thinking of having turkey tomorrow, but may go ahead and buy a ham. Our family likes both. There should be cole slaw left over tomorrow and I thought that I would cook some green beans with potatoes. I will serve dinner rolls and bake a pie for dessert. Yum, yum. I was thinking of making potato salad but then remembered that I already have slaw. Will make potato salad one day next week. My mother used to make the world's best potato salad and I come pretty close to getting it like hers. As a child I loved eating it while it was still warm.

Oh yeah, about secret pals. Haven't been hearing much about them recently. I believe that Vicky and Jeannine are the only ones who have posted about receiving things. Reminds me to get something in the mail here pretty soon.

I hope that each and every one of you will have a wonderful day. I am going outside in a big to do doggie dooty. Later sweet ladies.

A quick 5 min. (don't want to burn Easter supper) lol

Well just after I posted this morning I called Walmart and they were open early so by 8am I had my Easter treat shopping done..bunnies/movies etc. oh yes, and a plant for ME...so off to Home Depot and picked up necessary wood, lordy they had nicer plants so picked up a plant for ME...then went to IGA and did my groceries..of course by now I'm rushing in order to get home before the masses and it's only 8:45am..I ask the floor assistant where are the frozen turkeys with stuffing..that way you just put in the oven and ta/ta it's done..I make some of my own, mix with gravy and just as good as 'grandma' used to make..so he shows me where, tells me they are in the green tag bin..ok I'm there..pick up everything to do pies, then on the way out I see a sign $4.99 and beautiful potted plants so after I pay my groceries and don't want to get back into lineup I ask the cigarette counter if she's able to take cash for the plant..yep so I decide to purchase another plant...for ME..lol..then off to the door place, lordy he was helpful, I bought a triple insert of stained glass and new front door, so I have to bring specific measurement next week and he'll have it inserted to fit..so, I go to Norm's flowers (just opened) now didn't they have a beautiful yellow/orange container filled with plants, nice table setting so of course it came home with me, another for ME plant..

So I'm proud as can be, got everything done and it's only 10:30am..full day ahead..put all my groceries away, get the turkey, take it out of it's wrapper and I look again, not a pre-stuffed turkey, it's frozen so 'no good' for supper, so back in the car to town to purchase my 2nd. Easter turkey..
that's what you get for rushing too quickly..so now I've cooked my rolls, make my pies, carrots and turnip slowly cooking..yet a ham to cook but much too early..made all my pre-meal treats and I'm ready, ONLY if I'm a good girl and don't get into crafts and forget somethings a cooking..

Sounds like you are all busy, hope none of you are directly involved in the weather storms/flooding etc. do hope you are all safe..

Will be back to gab..

Liz, just incase DH does decide to get at it, I'd better post the next few steps..

The 6 panels once glued and nailed together to top and bottom base are not made to finish together...

So to finish these 2 ends I purchased dowel, rather large in diameter..in fact took the bottom part of gazebo with me to fit proper dowling..

Needed 2 pieces to do the 1 birdhouse (actually 3 pieces did 2 birdhouses)

It gives a finished look..

Wow Betty - You are making me look very bad. I haven't done much of anything today. I was able to go outside earlier and play in the dirt a little. Ha -ha, I am really glad that you treated yourself so nicely with all of the plants today. Feels good to have some living green around you doesn't it?

I bent way down low to the ground in order to smell the hyacinth that has sprouted and bloomed out back. Heavenly aroma. We are getting things together to run through the shredder, so I walked a bit in front yard and picked up sticks and other debri. I have lots of things coming up out front too. I believe some of what I was seeing was canna lilies. Some of my sedums are coming up and looking very healthy also. Still have lots of little purple crocus blooming their hearts away.

Oh yeah, even though they are not very tall yet, the peonies that we have are sprouting. I hope they bloom this year. While I was cleaning up stuff, I had marigold seeds galore that have stayed on the stalks all winter long. I am not sure if they will do anything, but I spread a lot of the marigold seed in several different spots.

I brought in the large bowls with holes in the bottom that I plan to start some coleus seed in the new few days. I will leave them indoors until they are ready to go outside later when the weather is much, much warmer. I grew some really pretty ones last year.

That is about it. I was going to go to grocery and cook a meal tomorrow, but decided that since it is only John and I that we will either eat leftover beefaroni or maybe go to a restaurant which we haven't done lately.

Happy Easter to everyone.

Good Afternoon!
Wow a busy day for all, wonderful!

Gita, been thinking about your plant. Don't plants go dormant in winter, maybe you ch plant is still sleeping.
After all these years I sure hope it comes back for you. Very pretty! Thanks, for info on them, pouting because that is one plant I myself can't keep...heheh probably baby too much.

LOL, Betty too cute...Glad you got some plants. Well is your company coming today?
I am going to enjoy making the gazeebo bird feeder, The dowels really does make it have a nice finish.

Ves, Glad the snow missed you. We ended up getting about 5or 6 inches. Glad it's over. My DH has been working on our House in Wisconsin...Located in Montello. We co-own it with our cousins. So for the last 3 years he, we have been renovating the place. It's 100 years old "shack" Anyway in winter dh has been going and working on the inside. He finished the Upstairs bedroom area. So now we can actually start decorating.
Now he has started on the kitchen…We gutted it and installed new windows and he and his plumber dudes went up to re-work the lines as we flipped the entire room. So big excitement is he built a small closet for washer/dryer…Still have a ton of work to do but making great progress. The place was abandoned for 8 years…All work came to screeching halt last year, but now “we” are working like gangbusters to get the entire thing done hopefully by Labor day this year. LOL, been saying that since we got the place.
Anyway our goal is to eventually buy-out our cousins and retire there. When we bought it that was clearly understood, so when we are ready …unfortunately it going to be a while more. But the best thing is it is directly half way to my Family up in Rhinelander area. So we get to visit a lot more.
What a fun SP gift you received!

Ruby, How nice you treated yourself. You deserve a treat after all your organizing. Good to take a break now and again too.

Shar, Hoping your boys are home by now…Enjoying planting your roses.

Liz, Gosh, your already at work…hope the day breezes by for you, and trouble free.
Making the bird feeder gazeebo will be pretty in your gardens.

Today I have decided to paint my bird house…only had two cups of coffee so my hands are steady. LOL, discovered I cannot paint after I drink coffee. I have spent the better part of my day removing the backing pattern from my embroidery project…just needed a break as my hands/fingers starting to cramp up, ouch!
So finally got the computer, everyone has now had there turn and now yippee my turn.

Oh yeah, Gita! Got a question for you. Ok I have an armerellis(I know I destroyed that plant name) I have had it in doors for I don’t know 8 years…Since it is a bulb I want to plant it outside. Do you think I can still do this or has it been too long indoors?? It has bloomed almost every other year. Beautiful red flower.

Dawn, how nice a bike ride! What kind of Motorcyle do you have? Glad the weather changed for you…
Haven’t received an SP surprise yet…months not over, so waiting patiently.

Well…back to embroidery, catch a movie…Sent dh and kids off to see some horror flick.

Carol, whatchya up to?

Going to cousins tomorrow so in case I don’t get computer time
Have a Glorious Easter day…Hope the weather will be beautiful for all!
Enjoy your family friends

See you later.
