Today's Weather in Your Garden - 15

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Woke up to 29 and snow, now it's 35 and gray out but warming up. Predicting 44 by 3pm and ending the day with sun! I'm B.B.Q.ing later, can't wait any longer!!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Ribs, chicken, steaks, hot dogs, hamburgers, veggies...? My mouth's a-waterin'!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We did a leg of lamb on Monday. The smells were great and the lamb was terrific.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have some chicken breast marinating in Caribbean Jerk for a few hours. One of my favorites!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

51 and sunny. Headed outside.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Suns out now, hope it stays and warms things up. :)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sun is out here and we have 51 so I'm heading out soon, too.

Thomaston, CT

GE--are you my sweet niece, Laur? I hope so, since I told you that this site is great! If you aren't my niece, sorry--she lives & gardens in Pittsford, & I love to visit all those wonderful garden centers in the area--Wegman's, too! The weather is 45 & mostly cloudy--did rake up lots of stuff yesterday--the blowdown from the white pines was very bad--some branches are stuck in my neighbor's fence, & I can't budge them--hopefully, he can get them from his side. Mama--what do you use to repot orchids? I have a catt that needs it, & I,m not sure what to use. Pix--sorry about the S---W! We are supposed to get some on Fri.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

We have a mix of sun and clouds and the wind is blowing, too. That makes it feel so much colder than 51 but I'm determined to get out there and do some work and check the trees and creek out back.

ROBINDOG, I try to mix my own medium for the orchids and tailor it to the type and age of the plant. For the catts, I generally use a mix of medium fir bark, horticultural charcoal, sphagnum moss and sponge rock. If it's a fairly young plant, I use a finer grade but if it's older, I make a chunkier mix. Some are in baskets and others are in pots. The potted orchids get packaging peanuts in the bottom to help with the drainage. You just have to sure they're not the kind that "melts" when it gets wet.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Bare with me I'm new to forums and chatrooms. I mailed you but just to make sure, sorry I'm not your niece in Pittsford. We are finally having more than one day of sun per week. Up here by Lake Ontario it's not very sunny.
Local Garden Show was a week ago or more. Lots of "hardscape" displays like patios with pergolas and fireplace with grill and bar, family room out doors. It was lost on us we only has a month of outdoor enjoyment, after the cool spring we get the heat and bugs ,no-one wants to be outside, then September comes, rain- thats it , no need for a fireplace outdoors.
I wanted to see more ner nursery stock but forcing at this time of year must be risky. Nice show otherwise for the size of city we have.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

52 and sunny with ominous looking clouds in the distance.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The strong wind is making it chilly - especially when the clouds come by. Not as nice as I was hoping. I want to get more done but I know my son will be complaining about the chill.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

It's an amazing 45 degrees with wind and a peek-a-boo sun.
The little one and I went for a 'walk' yesterday ... well, for as far as her little legs would go. She's just 20 months old, after all! But, we heard lots of birds and saw a lot of snow runoff, and she picked up a lot of stones that needed closer inspection.

The wind is just a bit too much for us to do our walk today, but I can't believe that the temperature is one degree warmer today than it was on that fateful day in June when I subscribed to DG!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Too blustery here. Had to come inside. My little guy was complaining, as I anticipated.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I'm sorry, Victor. I wish my little gal didn't complain when she has to come inside!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Normally he's the same, but he does not like wind!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

It's 46!!! Already BBQues...had to do potatoes and onions in tinfoil!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Whoo Hoo!!
I can smell it from here. Yummy!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

I got a good 1.5 hours of work done outdoors! Walked back through the woods to the creek and didn't see much coming up yet except the skunk cabbage and the naturalized daffodils. The creek is back down to where it should be but the last couple of storms have washed the fallen trees downstream, except for one huge sycamore. The elm trees have buds on them and will be the first to leaf out when spring really arrives. That wind is pretty strong, but this is March. Maybe it's time to get some kites! I'm sure those of you with little ones could entertain them on a windy day with a pretty kite.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Sun is back out and its 54 degrees with very very gusty winds blowing all those oak leaves all over the place, off my garden and into the woods would be a good direction for me.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

There's still too much snow for us to go walking down my the creek yet. That's something I can't wait to do, either!

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I actually could see some tags in the garden today on the south sides-they were really beat up-all folded up and slid down to the ground. But I could see where a few things were last year and reminisce.

Windy but its drying up the mud ! Yeah Yeah Yeah = Arm right, arms left, arms in the air.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Well, Our trip to Vt was a bust as for doing anything in the yard. DH had a couple of great days skiing. Lots of snow piles in the yard. Nothing coming up as it is all still buried. Returned today to Nantucket. Lots happening here in the yard and it was warm and sunny when we arrived this afternoon, completely over dressed from Vt. Lots of crocus up. Patti

Welcome home!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Temp 57.9°, Wind WNW 8.1 mph, Wchill 53.7°. ☺

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wind chills in the 50's don't really count!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Kept my back to the wind and enjoyed the warmth of the sunshine from 1:30 ish to 5:30. What a fantastic day in the garden. Tarragon coming up along with thyme and so much more! Tall bearded irises as green as can be, Japanese irises and Louisiana irises. Sedum putting out growth already.

The only downer was seeing tags all over.

Even now it's 54 with winds at 4 MPH. The high for today was 57 here.

Louisiana irises, pirl? Do tell! I saw the irises that I moved back by the water draining in the swale are up a good inch to inch-and-a-half. I'll need to clean off my primary bed to see what's what there. Took down the dead hibiscus stalks in that garden in the first round of spring clean-up.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, Louisiana's are up but I'll still cut them back to get off the winter burns. It's fun to rediscover what was in the garden. I found two Sidalcea 'Party Girl' plants (nice clumps now) that I had forgotten about.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Isn't it fun to see stuff come up that you had forgotten about?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Bummer when you find things that did not make it though.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, Victor, I've had enough of those as well.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Same here. The things I was disappointed with never seem to fail, but the precious ones are too delicate for our winters. I'm just happy at this point to see the daffys, crocus and hyacinths peeking up. The back yard is still spongy so any work in that area will have to wait until things dry out more. That's OK because the upper areas are in desperate need of attention, anyway!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - still muddy and spongy here as well.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

I had to wear my son's fireman-style boots just to get through the backyard to dump the twigs and branches in the woods. Good thing no one had a camera!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's styling!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

I know, I know - I set the style in fashion around here!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Hmmm, no mud or spongyness here. I didn't think I had good drainage, either.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I have spongyness but no mud. ☺
