Today's Weather in Your Garden - 15
No complaints about the temperature but the winds have gusts to 36 mph.
I'll take 60 and rainy over this. At this point I have no choice but to work in the rain!
Can i have a young man to put to work?
o wait - ultimate garden fantasy is a different thread.
; )
Temp 40.4°, Wind NW 14.3 mph, Windchill 24.8°. ☺
grammypheob: your winter pix from yesterday is so pretty! but I know as a gardener it wasn't exactly what you wanted to see outside your window! My mother in law is a big gardener and she lives in Maine where she still has 2 feet on the ground! She's got spring fever so badly...but can barely get outside!
Teitjen is one of the old, old names around here in Rhinebeck. I live in a house that was another one of the German Palantine farmsteads originally....Ackert was the name of the family back in the day.
Mamasita, the DC fair is really a big thing around here. Now for me, it's the antique car show in the spring that gets me going! We live a mile or so away from the aerodrome, if you've ever been there...
And Amethystsm: you're right, having a nice young man who actually knows something about gardening to put in 4 hours of work here and there is a really nice thing! Hard to find anyone, too.
Daisy, it's been quite a few years since we've visited the Aerodrome! We went a few times and saw Cole Palen. His family is from Hopewell (Palen Road is between Rts. 52 & 82, near IBM). My husband is a private pilot and loves aircraft.
I have 4 men here right now, but only 2 qualify in the "young man" category. Good luck getting them to do anything useful in the garden. I'd be afraid of what they might do!
Any gardening I do today will be of the indoor variety which is OK since there is a ton of repotting staring at my while I type this! - Lynn
Cold and windy today, but bright sun now.
Temps aren't gonna climb past 25, and it's a bone-chilling wind, too.
I just want all this snow to melt! Whaaaaa!
Thank you, Victor, for setting us straight about the hummingbird site.....Thanks very much, Ngam, for sharing that with us.....it is so cool!!
Sherrie and Candyce - Yikes on the snow records! I hope we have a house to come back to!! Sherrie - I hope you can join us in Keene for our nursery rendezvous or get-together.....it is so cool that we are building some DG numbers in that area.
Booj - those are gorgeous iris's. Keene isn't very far for you either, is it?
Pirl - I love that umbrella hat! Your DH seems quite comfy in it! LOL
Eleanor - so good to see you posting again! I've missed hearing about your world with Colin. How is he doing these days?
The program at ISM was great--pictures lovely, both as flowers and design of the beds. Boojum is traveling home in one piece.
38, sunny and WINDY. I had difficulty keeping the car on the road during those gusts.
Last week's snow is melting. If boojum finds holes in her garden she will know that we all own shovels. Actually I think people picked up some grand ideas.
Yay, Booj!!! Sounds like you knocked 'em dead!!!
Boojum, I knew it would be as terrific as your more than terrific garden.
DonnieBrook, I bet I can drag Boojum to Keene. We have gone a few plant junkets together.
I had a fabulous day outside doing more major pruning. It was a chainsaw day. We have enough brush and trees to burn for the next 2 days, so DH got the permit. Now I just have to see if I can move in the morning. My ambitions are sometimes far greater than my poor old body can handle. I always find out too late. Plus I got into the PI again, but came in and washed with Victor's recommended stuff. So far so good.
daisygrrl, I love Rhinebeck. My DS worked there at a nice wine store across from Beekman Arms for a couple of years while he was at CIA in Hyde Park. So we got to visit there a lot. Great restaurants and fine craft and antique stores. I always wanted to go to the craft fair, and I see that this year the dates are June 21, 22, and Oct. 4 and 5. Maybe I will drive over from Vt for the day. The very finest crafts artisans are always there. I like that Adams Fairacre Farms store too in Poughkeepsie. Oh and Gigi's. You live in a great spot. Patti
That would be great, Patti! What part of the summer do you spend in Vermont? Do you toggle between Nantucket and Vermont?? LOL
We drift back and forth all year between the two. I spend time in Canada at my 93 year old mom's cottage usually in late July. I love going to Vt anytime. I love my Brook and the trees. Nantucket is wonderful, especially out of season. But I do enjoy seeing all my summer friends, but not the traffic. Kind of like Sanibel in March. You know that drive or parking lot! But then there are always weeds in every Paradise. I would love a Toggle switch to move me magically between the two. Patti
Patti - I hear you!! If someone invents a toggle switch, I'm getting one too!! LOL
When we came home much of our new snow had melted. One topic which came up at the meeting lunch was winter damage. All of us can see down wood even trees, but this was under the snow. We had several melts before a new storm, but people found damage under the snow piles, mainly by voloes. One person reported nearly bare ground where a 15 yr. bed of Hens & chicks had been growing plus roots eaten on new daylilies. Another person had a near bed of siberians had been damaged. We have not checked on the sibs as yet and while we have chipmunks the vole damage is usually not horridly extensive as we don't have moles except for the starnosed mole which is a swamp animal. Our NE corner of Essex county in MA is usually free of them although I don't think they stop at the county line. Chipmunks & voles can dig their own holes but it is easier to follow the mole runs. I don't wish to worry peop;le farther north but when they can get into the garden I would see about smashing as many mole runs as possibe.
Hi everyone. I had a great day at ISM and it seemed that so did everyone else. Thanks for the confidence boosters. It really helped me feel relaxed. I even cracked a few jokes! I'm always surprising myself. The ISM people were wonderful.
A visit with Patti to Keene sounds great!
I haven't seen any signs of mole run when I saw bits of ground early this week. But I usually have tons. How do you smash them, iris? I step on them myself. Is there a better way?
Step is fine, can try a shovel or
DH has a tool with an end with he can pry things up & uses that for chipmunks as we don't have the moles. One chipmunk hole in the seedling bed forced him to go to the ag. co-op for a vial of fox urine and hung it over a metal marker so it would hang down in the hole. they retreated to the lawn which is much better than in a flower bed.
bbrookrd, I have to agree about Adam's. I visit both the Poughkeepsie and Newburgh stores as the plant stock seems to different between the two. The Newburgh store also is in the same block as a Lowe's and HD, so I can hit them all in one fell swoop. The icing on the cake is when the local orchid society hold its show and sale - four plant "shops for the price of one bridge toll!
We are planning to have a dinner at the CIA soon with our neighbors. I just need to select a date when we're all available.
When I was in high school, the neighbors I babysat for hired me to go with them to Nantucket for vacation. A real sweet deal! I've always wanted to go back as an adult.
- Lynn
Looks like you and Patti are going to go a visiting!! Mama, Patti is a real gem:))
Suns coming up, looks like it's going to be a nice sunny day. Starting out at a very chilly 15 degrees right now. Should end up warmer than yesterday in the mid 40s. No breeze right now but this cold isn't helping to defrost things much.
Yes ~ the sun is rising strongly, but it's a very chilly 12 degrees here a bit further North.
There's nary a cloud, which means that warm-up will be swift, hopefully!
Thanks for the tips on what may, or may not (gulp!), be winter damage under the snow. Anna and I will both keep an eye out for that. We have had moles in the lawn, but so far haven't seen any garden damage due to the little monsters! (Fingers are crossed!)
Temp 34.5°, Wind NE 4.5 mph, Wchill 29.5°. ☺
Temperatures look good, with sunshine, Wednesday (50's) and Thursday (high 40's).
Now we have 32 and wind at 4 MPH.
We've shot all the way up to 29 degrees!
Sunny, & I have a free Sunday--told my Mom & sister I HAVE to watch UCONN girls today--no lie, the team gets us through the winter! After that, I may rake up more----I see no real plant damage--the rhodos have no windburn this spring, the roses are green-caned & the rugosa I dug had leaf buds opening. Of course, I haven't removed the mulch from the perennial beds, yet! If you set a date for Keene, let me know----we are up & down I-91 to Enfield, NH in the summer to visit my hubby's folks at Mascoma Lake.
Yippee!
We'd love to have you join us.
And, I was just kidding about my messy house. You are all invited here, at least to stage for the journey to the other gardening spots. I'll put the coffee on and make snacks!
Blue skies and bright sunshine. The temp is charging past freezing now up to 42 degrees. You have to love that warm spring sun. :)
50 and sunny. Was beautiful, though a bit chilly, this AM for my first hike. Can't believe my forecast for tomorrow includes the possibility of snow, sleet and freezing rain the AM!! I was hoping to start planting and continue cleaning up. Ugh.
Sorry to hear that Victor. Our weather seems to be on an upswing.

This morning was cool here too. I needed three layers, but it warmed up very nicely. I got quite a bit of yard work done.
Yes ours gets much better after tomorrow. 60's on Tuesday with some rain. Mostly sunny and in the 50's on Wednesday. This will be a busy week.
Hi, everyone, I posted some pix in the Return to Gardening thread showing my pea planting and my pugs, if anyone is interested. I managed to get some in the ground (peas, that is!!), and hopefully tomorrow's crummy weather will just help water them in.
bbrookrd: thanks for mentioning such nice things about Rhinebeck. We love it here...have been here since '83 and have seen so many changes.
Now Nantucket...that's one of my favorite spots on the entire earth! We've been there about 10 times..often renting a house for a few weeks in the summer. We love: The Company of the Caudron, Summer House in Sconset (everything in Sconset), that little golf course out near Sconset, bike riding, Main Street shops, the Athenaeum, Downyflake donut (especially before the fire), and just about everything else.

47 degrees and sunny.
Ahem. It occurs to me that I haven't properly introduced myself to you folks! My name is Sue, and I was born in Portland, ME and grew up in Cape Elizabeth nearly in the shadow of Portland Head Light. I have also lived in Rockland, Bangor, and Biddeford. I have a DH of 36 years, 6 kids, 11 grandkids, with another on the way. We have lived here in PA now for 13 years. I love to garden and this website has been invaluable to me!
Patti, my family settled in Nantucket in the 1600's. just curious, do you know any people named Coffins, Stevens, or Starbucks?
Hi Sue, I have a niece in Portland, nice area.
Welcome officially, Sue! Congrats on the grandchild on the way and I look forward to seeing many posts from you. Did the Maine cold get to you?!
