Grammyphobe: I'm pouting too, can barely see the tops of the daffs.
A few days warm weather will put it right, although there have been storms in April that bent daf blooms.
Guess we aren't out of the woods until Mid April.
So pleasant to see how far down staters are with their helebores and crocus etc., I want heleborus (sp) for next year.
Today's Weather in Your Garden - 15
No school today so I'm home. I shoveled the driveway by hand and am now licking my paws. Coming down heavy now. So glad I won't have to drive today. :))
Congratulations Boojum!
Drizzly and 39 here.
So, if the hummers are so close and nothing's blooming but crocuses and daffs, what are they going to eat when they get here?
I have jelly beans.
Should I be congratulating you Sherrie?
Hummers don't eat jellybeans! Sheesh.
Getting darker outside right now. Might be a downpour soon.
Hummers eat bugs and nectar. Another good reason for having them in the garden. :)
Oh, I've seen a few bugs, but we have no nectar yet.
Regarding that hummer map, I think there is one hummer on steroids that zooms north, makes sure someone spots him / her, and then goes back south for dinner with the rest of the group.
he he he
My hummers show up the day the quince blossoms open every year. Don't expect them here till that day. Unless that steroid guy gets really nutty.
Maybe the hummers like the red jelly beans?
Kind of chilly at 39 degrees and it rained heavily earlier, but at least no snow. My sympathies to those of you who got the white stuff. One of the worst storms we got here more than a decade ago was on April 1st. We lost power then for 4 days 'cuz it was so heavy it took out trees and power lines. Keeping fingers crossed for all of you that spring has sprung!
I remember the April Fools Day storm, a lot of trees were damaged here in that one. It did melt quickly though. It is a good steady rain here now and hanging in at 39 degrees. Very thankful there has been no white stuff so far.
Jax very chilly little guys there, just remember warmer next week. They say we could get a blast of snow when the storm moves out just as a finishing touch, only a coating so not so bad here.
I remember the April Fool's Day storm well! 2' in 24 hours, then it all melted in about 1 hour. Mud, flooding, trees down- what a mess! Nature loves a good prank.
We had a huge white pine down across our drive. It took our power out and we were trapped. Since the power companies had lots to do, our drive was last on their list, so it was 2 days of no electricity. Fun!
Raked half the yard last weekend around the snow that hadn't melted. During the week almost all the rest had melted. Tried to order 10 yds of dirt yesterday to get a jump on spring. Planned to rake the rest of the yard this weekend. Will not happen now with the new snow on the ground.
Those snow pictures depressed me--we were supposed to get some, but we only had a little rain--yea! Thanks, Mama, for the advice on cutting & painting the wisteria--I knew I couldn't spray, & didn't realize there were products to brush on--I'll let you know how it works. I always ask my hubby for fuchsia for Mother's Day--that's when I spot the hummers, although last year, it was only 1 female. At least that's all I saw--maybe the males came when I wasn't watching.
On another thread it was suggested to use one of the "stamp-licking" containers with the sponge on top (found in office supply places) then to strip down the bark of whatever undesirable shrub (lopping it off first to about a foot or so) and liberally applying it with that. I have some Rose of Sharon that are taking over my side yard that I plan to try that method on.
Here's an update on the snows of New Hampshire ...
We have officially won the Silver Medal for having the most snowfall in one season. If we get five more inches (and it's still snowing in places) we will have the #1 Snowiest Season All-Time.
I'm not proud of THAT record. And we still have a few weeks of 'it could snow; it might not' weather ahead of us.
Oh yeah ... in my neighborhood we got four inches of snow last night and today.
Boojum,
Have fun doing your show. If people aren't interested, they aren't gardeners.
Good luck , Robin. I like what metopa wrote for applying the Brush B Gone, too. Do whatever is easiest for you to "paint" the stuff on the wisteria. Just an aside: have you considered taking a piece (or giving some to someone) to create a bonsai? I have seen in a few of my books that this can be quite an impressive plant to use for an outdoor bonsai. - Lynn
Overnight snow, then rain, morning sleet. A big flakeky snow shower. Snow is still on the grass, melted on gravel driveway.Don't we have fun.
My sympathies iris. After it is officially spring, snow isn't any fun - as if it was before.
Tomorrow I will have to check out the one little crocus patch which is blooming. All iris still under their pine needle mulch like good little plants.
Temp 38.1°, Wind NNE 0.0. ☺
31.7 and winds from the north at 8 mph. Going up to 45 today and tomorrow with sunshine.
we are pretty close for once.... 32 now... going up to 46 today.... here comes the sun!
19, with a high of 31, no snow melting today.
Yay sun!
It's 28 degrees, sunny with some spitting snow. I have a question: can I prune privet in cold like this? I finally have the young man who helps me in the garden coming over this morning, and the ground is frozen! Grrrrr. Can I put him to pruning this morning?
some one asked myreal name, it's Jo Ann.
We expect temps in the mid 50's by mid week.
Goodby snow.
Not sure about the privet.
Thanks for the encouragement for my show today, Polly. I'm a bit nervous since it's my first but as always, once I start talking....besides a pic is worth a thousand words. At first I was going to just show numbered pics and have people ask questions at the end, but they said folks won't want that. I guess I'm more of a film buff type. So now I don't have an artsy plan.
Boojum, just do what you do when I visit your garden. Show me one plant, then wait for me to stop babbling about it's beauty before moving on to the next. I am sure people will be thrilled with every picture you show. Plus you know so much. Be sure and show them come of your current orchid beauties so they know you aren't just an Iris gal. For those who don't know Boojums Iris gardens, here are a few that I love, but she has zillions to love. Sunny and clear, wind abating, heading outside. yippee. Patti

Thanks, Patti. You are right of course. I'll pretend they are here!! Those pics make me salivate (and they're my own babies!). This is always the hardest time of year-the waiting for the snow to go. I'm sure the timing for this talk is perfect-we are all so ready!
Today's weather is much better than yesterday's - finally stopped snowing. We only got about 5 inches but that is too much for this time of year. I saw some new names that have posted - hi and welcome to all of you!! Daisy from Rhinebeck - my neice lives in Rhinebeck with her husband and son. His family has lived there forever - name is Tietjen! Glad to have you with us! Eleanor
Good luck with your talk Boojum. If you have fun so will they and you are so right, all gardeners are way past ready for spring and are very ready to look at and discuss anything to do with plants and gardens. Beautiful iris.
Sun is out and the temp has climbed to a sizzling 28 degrees. A short burst of snow so all we got was a dusting and I am very thankful. Should warm to upper 30s for a high today.
Sunny and 35 here on the way up to the low 40s. Did I mention that it's sunny?
Daisy, I'm just down the parkway in Hopewell. Try to get up your way when the DC Fair is happenin' in August.
Lovely irises, Boojum!
36, sunny and windy. Spring???
Victor - 35 and windy as can be here, too. Tuesday's weather calls for near 60 degrees but then they added the word rain spoiling the whole day.
