bobby vinton did sing blue velvet.
What was the first record/single you ever bought?
This has been fun all the different music everyone has and loved or still loves.
When you listen to an oldies station, it seems they do not play quite a few old songs and just repeat certian ones.
Nice to remember and "play" some of these tunes in your head.
i was raised on a album by Sgt. Barry Saddler-The green barre
I luv all the songs and i think this is the reason i cant sing! My voice is low and my
mom told me after a hr of trying to get me to sing soprano to go find a bushel basket to care a tune in!!! But i still sing like no one is listening!! I luv singing! lol
Graet thread! I remember listening to my moms 45's recorded in the 60's. My favorite was The Toys "Love serenade"
How gentle is the rain
That falls softly on the meadow
Birds high up in the trees
something something....lol
My first album was The Jackson 5, ABC. I won it at Coney Island.
I too was looking to buy one of those record players to record my records to cd. I wound up getting a little mp3 player by IRiver from Amazon that plugs into my record player and records and then I plug into my computer and burn a cd. Only cost 62.00. It was being discontinued then, so dont know if they still have them but they make great little gadgets.
Taking a break and enjoying the memories! As I recall, my first record purchase was "Susie Darlin'" by Robin Luke in 1958. Still one of my favorite songs, along with "Since I Don't Have You" by Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners, and "Save The Last Dance For Me" by The Drifters! The Skyliners were a Pittsburgh group, so we heard a lot of them. I also loved anything by Bobby Darin, especially "Nature Boy", and "If I Were A Carpenter". "Since I Don't Have You" was one of those "last dance of the evening" songs, as was "High on a Hill", "To Know Him is to Love Him", "Angel Baby", "Could This Be Magic?", "All In The Game", etc. - slow dances so the guys would dance.
JadaJoy, that wonderful song was called "Lovers' Concerto" , and I think the rest of that line is "...serenade the clouds with their melodies".
Well, back to programming...
Thanks for the break!
Bonnie
Thanks NanuBunny!
I still listen to "Could This Be Magic."....still love it.
I am keeping up real well, but Susie Darlin' --That's one I haven't heard of, nor Robin Luke.
Suzy Darlin'
oh oh susie darlin, i thought you knew, you mean all the world to me, all my dreams come true.
kwanjin - having trouble locating the box with the albumns but i will get to it.
Yup, that's it, Frank - he was a one-hit wonder who is now Professor Robin Luke, head of Southwest Missouri State University's department of marketing and quantitative analysis. I loved that song, and it is still my second favorite. My all-time favorite is still "Since I Don't Have You".
Enjoying the ride through time,
Bonnie
No worries, HERBIE.
does anyone remember the song "you're still the one" i believe it was by the holllies? well, the leader of the group is now a congressmen from my area.
i will keep looking for it.
Yes! I remember it and I enjoyed it. It was great for dancing.
do you remember the instrumental "night train" it was perfect for a slow lindy.
Oh my gosh ... I've just found this and remember purt near all these. Here's the first 45 I ever purchased with my very own money. :)
Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Were Made For Walking
You keep saying you've got something for me.
something you call love, but confess.
You've been messin' where you shouldn't have been a messin'
and now someone else is gettin' all your best.
These boots are made for walking, and that's just what they'll do
one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you.
You keep lying, when you oughta be truthin'
and you keep losin' when you oughta not bet.
You keep samin' when you oughta be changin'.
Now what's right is right, but you ain't been right yet.
These boots are made for walking, and that's just what they'll do
one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you.
You keep playin' where you shouldn't be playin
and you keep thinkin' that you´ll never get burnt.
Ha! I just found me a brand new box of matches yeah
and what he know you ain't HAD time to learn.
Are you ready boots? Start walkin'!
Hahaha, I use to looove that song and "It's Judy's Turn to Cry". LOL Member "Everly Brothers - Wake Up Little Susie"? That was my parent's, but I played it all the time. I believe that was a 78, though.
~Susan
Oh, I loved all those! My sister was 16 when they came out, or at least driving age and she would turn the radio up real loud and tap the beat out with the gas pedal...lightly. We didn't jerk forward or anything, but I just thought she was the COOLEST. Plus she had the best flip (hairstyle) in her high school. Lesley Gore, Nancy Sinatra, and all the Beach songs, too... to this day they remind me of her driving me to the pool, or to a friend's house or whatever.
Suzy
Yeah, those were the good ole days. Of course I wasn't driving. Way to young. We had the public swimming pool back then, and I can remember going there and the great frozen Zero candy bars we use to buy. LOL They'd play music over the loud speakers while we'd swim.
Hey, does anyone remember those old round 45 record carriers we use to have where you turned the handle and the lid locked on? I had an olive green one. Anyone else have one?
Mine was gold....
Mine was kind of a tan color.
o.k. what was the cheapest price you paid for your 45 records. i remember 50 cents apiece.
I was reading this thread and those of you that get songs stuck in your head made me feel lot better. I've had this happen before, but it usually goes away before the day is over.
However, for at LEAST three days, I've been singing the band aid song. "I am stuck on band aid brand 'cuz band aids stuck on me." Visions of those two adorable children that sing it go along with the melody. I've tried everything, music, movies, exercise, keeping busy...nothing works. The band aid song prevails.
Maybe if you sing it for a few days it will leave me alone for awhile. :)
Grrrrr... Now I have it stuck in MY head... Thanks a bunch! LOL.
Bum bum Bumble-Bee, Bumble-Bee Tuna!!!
My bologna has a first name, it's O-S-C-A-R!
My bologna has a second name, it's M-E-Y-E-R!
Oh, I love to eat it everyday...
And if you ask me why, I'll saaaaayyy...
'Cuz Oscar Meyer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A!
i am stuck on band aids was writen by barry manilow (sp) you know the guy who sang "mandy" he also wrote the theme song for state farm insurance "like a good neighbor, state farm is there"
i need some help. there is a song i think song by christopher cross and part of it goes "theres a warm breeze blowing the stars around and i really want to see you tonight" the next line is the one i am interested in and i can't figure out what the words are. it starts as "i'm not talking about --------- and i don't want to rule your life"
can someone help me please.
Herbie... is it "lockin down forever'...
is it a country song?
Also, I've worked for the 'good neighbor' company for 18 years and had no idea that barry manilow wrote the theme song! lol!
AnjL
anjl - no thats not the words it sounds like "i'm not talking about beliving" but i don't think thats the word.
he wrote many theme songs. on one of his albaums he goes through some of them.
I looked it up -- I always wondered, too...nothigng I came up with made sense. I foudn these 2 fro a Google search:
I always thought the lyrics to this song were "i'm not talking about the linen and I don't wanna change your mind" it wasn't until I saw the kickass movie "the long kiss goodnight" with Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson and she corrects him when he sings that.....
apparently its "i'm not talking about moving in and I don't wanna change your mind" ~I still sing the first one though...don't tell
Lyrics to the whole song can be found here.. sung by England Dan and John Ford Coley
http://www.guntheranderson.com/v/data/idreally.htm
From what I can recall that one was popular around '76.
sthats it. your tgerrific. don't know when it came out but i always liked that song.
Interesting thread. I never bought a record, no player!
But we had WDGY out of Minneapolis & one out of Chicago, can't remember the call letters. All rock & roll.
I lived in the Twin Cities in the mid 60's. There was a place called "The Prom Ballroom". We were there every Friday & Saturday night, (trolling, if you know what I mean).
Anyway, they had name bands playing the dance music. Conway Twitty was there when he was a upcoming Rock & Roll star. Bobby Vee played there often. Others were regulars there too. Most were not famous at the time but went on to be stars.
The thing is, we went there to dance, not just stand & google the performers like kids do now days.
I still am a great lover of Elvis music.
Another thing I remember. We spent Wednesday night skiing under the lights at Pine Bend ski hill. Of course Rock & Roll was playing on the speakers & you skied to the music! Sometimes when we were in the chalet & "Boots are made for Walking" played, it got kind of loud with everyone stomping on the wood floor with the ski boots.
A local radio station here is an "Oldies" station, so we get to listen to the old Rock & Roll everyday.
Bernie
Takes me back, way back. First 45 I bought was "Eight Days a Week" by the Beatles. First of many I would buy. Those were the good old days....
there were some great songs then but there was also some
bad ones. "itsey bitsey tiny winnie poka dot baginni (sp) comes to mind. LOL
How about "Put the lime in the coconut" was that called "witch doctor?" There were many crazy songs back then.
I knew Barry Manilow wrote many jingles, from Mc Donalds to State farm. Those songs are written to stick in your head. That was a sign of a good jingle.
some of my favs.
"my dog's better than your dog, my dog's better than yours, my dog's better 'cuz he eats kennel ration, my dog's better than yours."
and who can forget
"plop plop fiz fiz oh what a relief it is"
Of course the bologna song. What a classic!
Anyone who thinks that TV has not affected the public is crazy. These ads stick with you for life.
I haven't had tv for years. Not the same without the theme music for the shows.
What would the "adams family" be without snapping their fingers, the "3 hour tour" gone bad, or the hillbillies looking for black gold?
How about the classic like "mission impossible or bonaza? Bet you can hum each of these can't you?
Yeah, what about ...
A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a horse of course
That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mister Ed. :-)
And speaking of Conway Twitty, I saw him and Loretta Lyn in concert. That was back in the days when you could actually go down to the stage and stand right there. I was so close, I could have reached out and touched the hem of her dress. It was a gorgeous emeral green. I'll never forget it ... and I'm still an Elvis fan. :)
Golly they had a bunch of silly shows back then.
Mr Ed, munsters, adams family, I dream of Jeanie, Bewitched, my friend Martian, my mother the car, all shows based on non-reality.
Of course we can add Gilligan, Beverly hillbillies, that were a little more real, (no magic) but just as silly.
No wonder we are all a little batty. ^_^
Ha, that was my second album purchase.
Now that is some groovy music!
