What was the first record/single you ever bought?

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

will i be dating myself if i asked how many of us used to sit glued to our chairs in front of the t.v. when the "hit parade" came on. i remember snooky lanson with a red bandana around his neck singing the banana song. i think jazel machenzie (sp) was also on the show. there were about 4 or 5 singers and they would sing the top 5 songs or so on the record charts each week.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

pastime - "Oh Maybelline, why can't you be true". Loved him!

Yes, Herbie, I clearly remember the show. It's nice to know a few of us remember the oldies.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Yes, we are all dating ourselves, but I think it is neat to see what everyone enjoyed as a youngster. The music back then was such a part of who we were.
T.V. with the hit parade, Ed Sullivan, and...what was it called where you rated the new song to how well you could dance to it? Was it Dance party?

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

And I used to watch Soul Train every Saturday. I remember when the Jackson Five came out and everybody almost fainted......... I can still hear Cornelius' voice!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

oh soul train! That's one I definitely remember and the monkeys! Hey Hey it's the Monkeys!!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Thanks for bringing me down memory lane... I can associate a few boyfriends with some of those songs..lol

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh oh, lol

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It's fun to think of old boyfriends - they never grow old as we do if we don't see them.

Santa Fe, NM

So true. l.o.l. I think it was The Monkee's. Hadn't thought about them in a long time! I wonder what became of those guys.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Took me all this time to remember, Dick Clark and American Bandstand. Sheeesh.

The Monkees are around. Last year DD emailed me and asked me if this was a "Monkey" and sent his picture.
Seems like after a concert one of them (I will not mention) was in a bar hitting on all the girls there and bragging he was famous.
Well the 25-30 year old "babes" didn't know who he was.
She sent me the picture, to see if I knew who he was, as she thought it was just a pick up line.
It was a real Monkee. I was geeked, she was not.

Santa Fe, NM

I have to say The Monkee's were never really the coolest band, being put together for a television show. Probably this resulted in all kinds of psychological problems!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

awwww....... i thought they were cool! lol

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I thought they were kind of stupid, even at my young age, I think I was in 6th grade when they were at their peak, but I did like the music.
They did put out some really good songs.
I'm a believer, Last train to clarksville...

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

the funny think about the monkees is that they were just part of a t.v. show and they cold not play instruments. they just faked it but when they got all that attention they had to go and learn how to actually play them.

it was sort of the same with ricki nelson from the t.v show. they decided to have him sing a song and it took off from there. only difference was that he has a great voice. who could forget "travelling man".

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Actually, I think Mike could play. There was quite a bit of controversy on them wanting to play and not being able to. He was also the only one that wouldn't tour with the other three guys. (I think he did once or twice) Rumor was that his mother invented liquid paper and he didn't need the money.
For a "put together band" they were ok.

I agree with Ricki N. and he wasn't hard to look at either.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Yes, Mike Nesbit's mother really did invent Liquid Paper -- he was a musician on the other side of the studio...he preferred the more technical side like the mixing boards, etc. and got into music videos early on and was an early pioneer in some different kinds of recording they do now. I saw a documentary/biography on him, but now I can't remember any of the terms they used to make it sound like I know what I'm talking about. :))

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

It scares me that I knew that much about him! lol
The stupid stuff that sticks in the brain.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

He was my favorite :))

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Yeah? Well, here is a secret. He was my fav too. I think it was the stocking cap.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Naw, he could lose the hat -- for me it was the groovy sideburns. :))

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Remember, Daydream Believer too from the Monkees.

About Rick Nelson, I remember crying when he was killed in the plane crash. And I remember, it was a New Year's Eve. And don't forget his song folks...............Garden Party.... :)

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

i liked Peter he was always somewhat the underdog. I have a soft spot for those.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i thought daydream believer was a great song.

remember those silly songs that came out all at once where the guy would talk about alians visiting earth and then they would interject the lines of popular songs into the recording. something like the aliens would look at all the earth people and say "great gogga mooga, get me outta here"

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The Purple People Eater!

Santa Fe, NM

Hey, I was a kid in grade school and I remember the Purple People Eater!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

oh my sister had nightmares over the purple people eater song. lol

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Today is Fats Domino's 80th birthday!

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

OH my gosh, my mother turned 80 last Tuesday...she's a week older than Fats Domino!!!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'm a day older than Paul Anka!

Harleysville, PA

John Denvers Greatest Hits with Sunshine On my shoulders and Leaving On A Jet Plane!!!! Such a great album!!!!

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i used to sing sunshine on my shoulder to my son chris as i was dressing him and he would smile and dance around all over the place. sure brings back memories.

Harleysville, PA

I was 7 at the time and heard that album over a friends house i think her mom was a big fan of John Denvers. I kinda got away from that music as a teen but after hearing of his death in 1997 I picked up his old Rocky Mountain Christmas album and fell in love with his voice/songs again. Really liked his Christmas Special in 1975 with Steve Martin and the glass dome!!!!!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I loved John Denver. I used to dream about marrying him and moving to the rockie mountains! He was my second husband...Donny Osmond was my first.....LOL

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Donny Osmond was on Good MOrning America this morning :) He's gained a little weight, but then haven't we all. :)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I loved the clarity of John Denver's voice.

Maybe we all envisioned ourselves married to a singer as we've mentioned. If so, they'd each have had many, many wives!

(Zone 7a)

I'm not a big John Denver fan but he made an appearance on the The Muppet Show and they did "Grandma's Feather Bed". Just priceless.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

My favorite muppet show was when they had Elton John on. He did croc rock and don't go breaking my heart (with miss piggy as keekee dee).

(Zone 7a)

That was cute!

Harleysville, PA

I know John Denver did a few muppet shows. Rocky Mountain Holiday Christmas with the Muppets and Muppets with John Denver, Linda Ronstead and forget who else was on that one.. The were all cute shows. My kids loved Ms Piggy!!!!

(Zone 7a)

Animal is my favorite. He just makes me laugh every time I see him.
