What was the first record/single you ever bought?

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Born from another thread gone awry.

Can you remember the first song, 45 record, 78 record, CD that you ever bought?

The first record I ever bought was
Sitting on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding (45)

What was yours?

Heart Full Of Soul ...The Yardbirds.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

earth angel by the penquins (argubly the very first song played on the radio by alan freed in which he coined the name rock n roll.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Can't think of that song without thinking of the movie Back to the future.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i believe the flip side of that great song was "riot in room 11"

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Wow, that is an impressive memory!

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

don't know what i had for dinner last evening though. LOL

i remember there was always controversary over which son was played first by alan freed. to this day, bill haley claims that his "rock around the clock" was the first one but i was listending in on that historic night when earth angel was played.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Can't remember that. I do remember watching the beatles, the first time on Ed Sullivan though.

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

A 45 rpm, "Hound Dog", with "All Shook Up" on the reverse side, by Elvis Presley. I was an infant, of course!

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i have a huge trunk filled with albums i collecxted when i was in the service from 1962 through 1966. i have all the peter paul and mary recordings, paul and paula, the coasters, elvis, the platters etc. i would love to make them into c.d.'s and i have seen in magazxines these record player/radio/c.d. recorder for about 400.00 and once i saw it for 300.00. it claims you can play your records on the turntable and record them onto c.d.'s. it's been part of my wish list for awhile now.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

thats how elvis and alot of other artists rfeally lost money. when both sides of a 45 become big hits you only have to buy the one record. nowadays you see one good song on an albumn and you have to buythe whole thing cause they don't make many singles anymore.

Saw the Beatles at Sydney Stadium ...could not hear a word they sang (screaming drowned it out) and really enjoyed Peter Paul and Mary at the same place (different time) :)

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

The first record I ever remember listening to was on a 78. It was "mule train" we also had "rawhide" and "bibbity bobbity boo" on 78.

Never saw the Beatles in person. That must have been quite the event!

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

My very first one was "Leaving on a Jet Plane" by Peter, Paul, and Mary I loved that song so much and knew the words by heart, that when I was in 6th grade, I sang it on a (what seemed to be) a huge stage in front of over 600 people.....all by myself.

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go......................

Ah, what memories...

Now mind you that was over 40 years ago.

Santa Fe, NM

I'm thinking Beatles, "Hard Day's Night". I was about 11 years old. I loved Paul. Then, later, John. Later still, George. Not Ringo so far! A friend here says "the Alman Brothers first album". My D.H. says, "Rolling Stones, High Tide and Green Grass".

CD? The Joshua Tree. I paid $21.99.

Mandeville, LA(Zone 8b)

The first record/single I bought with my own money was Crocadile Rock by Elton John. My mom took me to Cat's Drug Store to get it. They also had all of those great gadgets "BY RONCO" there!

(Zone 7a)

The first record I bought was by the band YES. It was titled YES. I was ten years old, used my own money, it was my birthday, and my mother freaked. Until she heard them. They were my introduction to Progressive Rock, Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i'm sure you all remember frankie lyman (sp) and the teenagers but what you may not know is that their record company was so cheap and dishonest that many of the songs recorded were not with the teenagers. they would send him to different studios all over the country and he would record the songs with a plain back up group who took far less money than the original back up group would have.

there was a big article in our local newspaper a while ago which talked about how the old time groups are losing money because their "names" did not belong to them. while another bunch of guys cannot record a song and call themselves frankie lyman and the teenagers it is o.k. if a member from the ORIGINAL) group went on tour and called themselves frankie lyman andthe teenagers even though onlyh one is the original. if you go to these oldie concerts you see alot of times where members of the group are way to young to be the originals and that is whatg we pay to go and see.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

We saw a group preform in Vegas, about 20 years ago, Can't remember the name of the group, oldies like the drifters or something. After, saw one of the singers and asked who was origional in the group. He said "no one"
This is why they had that problem. Replacing one or two people, but replacing them all, you no longer have that group.

Some good songs here. I can see why they were first purchases. Just wanted to add. I proudly NEVER bought an 8 track tape. (never did disco either, friends would bug me to go to a club and I would say, not cool)

Also can't remember how much the 45 records were back in the 60's. Seems like 50 cents is right.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

I can remember getting 3 45s for $1.00. I must be older than you...born in the 50s, because I did buy 8 tracks!!! and played them over and over and over again.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I am a classic 1955 model.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

Well, you beat me by 2 years...I turned 50 last Sept.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

That is why I can't remember how much I paid for 45's LOL

Every year after 40 I got a great birthday present, like sagging this, new pain here, bad gall bladder, etc. Last year I got jowls. This year cinnamon bun knees. I think I will put a bow on them. Maybe I just need a new mirror.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

are there any old people here besides me. i had a 68 chevy filled with 8 track tapes. i remember how bulky they were just to carry into the car. LOL

Victoria Harbour, ON

I'll be showing my age..it was 'He's got the whole world in his Hands' drove my grandfather nuts..now I hear it played and I know why..lol

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

That is one reason I never got them.
My 65 galaxie 500 convertible (sounds better than it was, although it was in excellent condition)
Yellow with black leather interior, had a great radio and good stations.
And you couldn't hear the radio over the yelling from sitting on the black seats in the sun or the cold leather in the winter.
Looked good going down the road in that huge boat car though.
And that was what was important.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Betty, we cross posted.
Thanks, I have that song stuck in my head now. LOL

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I remember going with my mom when I was 11 to buy 45s, but all the sections for all the Top 40 hits were empty! ALL of them! (This was at a store that was a precursor to Target, not a record store, which at that time would have been a precursor to a head shop.)

They were 3/$1.00 and I ended up buying Harper Valley PTA (Jeanne C. Riley), and Gentle on my Mind (Glenn Campbell) but then I had one more.....I had never heard of any of the choices I had, but my mom was paying, so I chose 'Little Arrows' by Leapie Lea. I swear, it was some artist with a name like that. I'm sure no one here has heard of it, but here's the refrain:
Little Arrows that will hit you once, and hit you once agin,
Little Arrows that hit everybody ev'ry now and theeeeeeeeen.

LOL!

anyone remember the limelighters with kenny yourborough (sp) as the lead singer. they had a great funny song called "have some maderia, maderia" its was about what happens to a woman when she drinks to much maderia wine.

i think the everly brothers harmonized the best but my all time favorite male singer was johnny mathis. his greatest hits albumn was on the top 10 list for over 10 years in a row and i had his christmas albumn on vinyl, 8 track and c.d.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i'v never heard of her but the tune sounds catchy. LOL

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Don't remember little arrows or the maderia song.
You gotta remember "witch doctor" though,
You put the lime in the coconut and drink 'em both up.

Presque Isle, MI(Zone 5a)

Rockin around the Christmas Tree. Brenda Lee. Wata heart throb. I seem to remember paying $1.00. It was a lot of money..

Gary

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

of course. i have an albumn by the coasters in which each one of the group sings a song by himself. as a group they sound good but individually they don't. i still have my albumn titled
"rumble" the paragons meet the jesters. it's the only albumn i know of that featured two groups at the same time.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

A buck? Sheesh, do you know how much candy you could have bought with that? LOL

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Herbie - I think we're in the same age bracket. I remember every song you mentioned.

My first purchase was Nappy Brown's "Don't be Angry". Elvis and the Everly Brothers weren't far behind.

My DH's first was something by Bix Biderbecke (sp) in the 40's.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i loved brenda lee. she was billed as the "little girl with big voice"
i think i had a crush on her. LOL
i still have a greatest hits c.d in my car.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

how are you pirl? - i was born in 1943 and thats why i still love rock n roll. i was shocked when they took 101.1 off the air but now it's back on but i don't get a good signal up here in the boonies. once i pass the whitestone bridge heading towards your neck of the woods do i pick it up good.

do you remember "lil darling" by the del vikings. that was a great tune

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Before you, Herbie!!!

I don't recall the melody but seem to remember the name of that Li'l Darlin. I used to go to the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre to see the old groups and loved Fats Domino's Blueberry Hill. My daydreaming job was deciding which of the Everly Brothers I'd marry - HA!

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

oh lil darlin, i was wronga to try to love two, a hopppa hoppa hoppa. LOL

i sure remember the paramount. the place used to rock.
