South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Love those 2 colors together!!

Here you are Pixie, but don't let this keep you from looking!

The light pink is momogasumi from Dutch Gardens and Ensata has the dark one Good omen.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Hemhostaholic,

I would not plant the JIs with any bearded. The JIs like much more water, and the bearded like it dry.

I have had the combo work successfully, but for optimal growth and flowering of the JIs they want it wet.

For some other iris, the sibs would do well with the JIs and also the water iris, like Contraband Girl, one of my favorites at 6 feet tall.

http://www.plantdelights.com/Catalog/Current/Detail/01350.html

Ensata Gardens, and Iris City Gardens carry a lot of the water irises. Iris City has Contraband Girl for 6.00.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thank you for the tips Polly, am making all kinds of mentals notes. Am I correct in asumming that JI's like acidic soil? Mine seem to do best near the blueberry bushes and pine/fir tree's.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You guys are certifiable! Left to you, there would never be an economic downturn or recession. I love Lee Valley too. Annoying that I have to pay NY sales tax though.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, Pixie, the JIs love acid soil, and will do extremely well with the blueberries.

And pine trees show them off so nicely.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Polly, can I leave JI's in pots on the 'shelves' of my pond?

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Not over the winter. They can stay in the pot up until the winter and then bury the pot in the ground. Even if the pond doesn't freeze the rhizomes don't like to be quite as cold as we have it up here. If the pond freezes it is fatal to the rhizomes.

Come on Victor, you know you want one.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ha ha - I'm inching closer. I forgot which irises I asked you about recently when you said I could grow them in the pond. I don't think it was JI's.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm not sure either, but the Contraband Girl would do well there. The height if that plant is what really draws me. It really is 6 feet. Also any virginica, versicolor, (and the hybrid of the two, which is called robusta), laevigata, and the pseudacorus hybrids, and the pseudata crosses.

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

ngam, HOW could I not have heard of, nor stumbled upon, Grey Wood Farm? I live in Boxford, on the Topsfield line. I don't know where their address is, oddly.
I should yell at you for turning me on to them!!! Bye-bye more $$$$$!!!!
I have already purchased more STUFF for my garden(s) that I could have my own thread. I could have my own web site. Plants, bulbs, roots, corms, and seeds, seeds, seeds...
I'm doing something this year that I've always wanted to do- I bought an EarthBox, a Grow Box, and I have the DG directions for making your own self-watering planter from the rubbermaid tubs- so I'm testing the ability of each to grow cut flowers (I haven't decided which, yet- something easy- zinnia, maybe?) YES I am totally OC/manic depressive. Yes, I am on my meds. Yes, I think they need tweaking...
I'm supposed to be on a flight to Zurich tonight, but the snow may have other plans. Oh, well...

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Jax do you have the link for the DG directions ... rubber maid tubs sound great... can't seem to find anything

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I even have things like this is my freezer and frig!
(These are Weeping Cherry Tree seeds in the frig)

Anyone here interested in having a hardy tropical forum? :o)

Hope you don't have a sleepy person looking for a midnight snack!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I try to hide them well so no one eats my seeds by mistake.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

This must be the perfect place to ask for this. Does anyone have a photo of a humongous plant delivery(ies) where all the plants are unpacked and laid out together? It's for an article I'm working on. Thanks.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

My suggestion is to go to one of the coop Queens..ive seen them post pictures before.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

How humongous, Victor? I'll dmail you one I have.

Jax - it's so nice to see you haven't changed and have retained your enthusiasm for your gardens!!! Good luck with the trip. Flights are backed up now.

Winnetka, IL

You know, I have to stop browsing these forums- I keep finding DANGEROUS people like you who list nursery websites that get me into trouble. I have a nice, wet area that is perfect for Siberian Irises; 'Caesar's Brother' and 'Black Gamecock' are thriving there, and now I find ensata.com......

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ah, you have lots of snow and nothing to do too?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Disclaimer: Any over heating of credit cards or dipping of bank accounts or malfunctions of keyboards due to dripping drool is the sole responsibility of the enablee and in no way can be attributed to the enabler. :) Just here as a public service.

Jax being that close might be very difficult but could also be a lot of fun. Kinda like living next to a casino.

Winnetka, IL

Yes, lots of snow, and even worse ice. (My poor dogs aren't getting the loooong walks they're used to). I do have a greenhouse, and I've got about 15 different species starting inside! And lots of drooling online!

I hear your disclaimer, ngam, but I'll still gripe about your enabling!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Someone here must have snapped a photo to capture their 'What was I thinking?!' moment.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No Victor.....that would be evidence!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

How funny that you mention that phrase, Victor. It's what JD and I wrote to each other about for months last year.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I've used it, along with an expletive inserted in there, many times!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

How depressing.....I just read that it can take up to 3 years for a Clematis to germinate from seed!!!! I have 3 different ones I was going to try....

Winnetka, IL

pixie62560- I have Clem seeds I harvested last fall that germinated in about a week. I lost the label (duh) but I know they're either C. hexapetala or C. jouiniana 'Mrs. Robert Brydon'. I'm trying some others.... we'll see how patient I am.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, layering is the preferred propagation method.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Try it anyhow. If you don't you'll never know and in three years you'll be three years older and just might be more reluctant to try. Do it!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the encouragement! I have 'Jackmanii' , 'Madame Julia Corrvon' , and one that just says 'Purple Double'

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, try it anyway, Pixie. In three years you'll still be here to see it. And look back at what three years accomplished. Better than looking back and saying I wish......

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Ok, I'm not going to curse, but, SOB....just went to Plant Delights...

One of my favorite, FAVORITE annuals...are elephant ears...OMG....

I'm broke*sobs*

I can't take anymore...I need the Betty Ford clinic ASAP.

And, they have HOSTA...oye...and Iris...*nods head in sadness, but grins*

Oh well, there is always Overtime...lol

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Pixie, if the clematis don't start check out this site http://www.silverstarvinery.com/
The owner's name is Debbie and the plants she sells have HUGE root system's and the prices are not bad especially after you see what you get.

Betty Ford? OK here you go.

http://www.bettyfordalpinegardens.org/bf_con.htm

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

wha - I've been guiding people to Debbie for some time now!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Somehow I thought Pixie was trying it for the experience of it all.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi Victor - yes, Debbie is great and I wouldn't get a clematis from anyone else. I have ordered about 10 plants from her. She has even thrown in a couple free plants she thought I would like. The sample plant she has on her web site is very accurate. A few years ago i wrote a positive review for her on DG with a comparison picture of her's and one from Wayside Gardens. The Wayside plant was TINY in comparison - and more expensive.

By the way I saw your endorsement of japanese maples from (i think) Wildwood Farms and ordered a couple. Also got two others from Forest Farm. Both had good ratings so I'm interested to compare what I recieve. So you can add these to my list of plants I posted earlier. To come clean I also ordered a couple unique Picea spuces and will be dropping a bundle on a new JM variety called Shirazz if it lives through the winter for a DG'r in Illinios. That's $1K before I step foot in a nursery - good thing my wife and I have separate credit cards!
