This is a bit "OT" as this doesn't pertain to brug seeds but I figured that I'd post this here to my good friends who have shared their seeds with me. I harvested a lot of seeds from my red castor bean plants last year and, I have close to a 1,000 seeds, and I just can't throw them all out. So, if anyone would care for some of these seeds just dmail me.
Sorry about the OT hi-jack.....
Just "ME"
New lil Baby seedlings!!!!! Continuation!!
Jan what a cute pic! Thanks, I have about a handful I'll plant out in a month or so. I have purple bell vine, impatient, peppers, rudbeckia and some other seedlings, I don't have any brug sprouts, yet...... But I've enjoyed and am encouraged by your fun posts. CONGRATS, success! Mine are still bagged, I dampened the paper towel with H2O2, they are in direct southern sun..... I anxiously await and inspect daily for a "break through", a little tail,?,.... perhaps it will look like a small tadpole.... I wait. I will remove the pod from Peach Versi and try some of them outside next month. Once I see what's INSIDE the pod, I'll be happy to share, but I don't know for sure it's cross. You need some amorphophallus...but that's another forum. Chrissy, those are some gorgeous happy youngin's. So neat and pretty. Congrats to you, too!
With all my seedlings, the faithful NOID pink is blooming for me this spring. B, if any of my seedlings perform well this year, I'll be sure to send you some cutting later. Congrats Jan on your seedlings. Best of lucks. I thank you for your offer of Castor oil bean's seeds. I planted 3 of them last year, and have enjoyed them immensly. I had one stray seedling earlier, and snail and slug chomped it down in half, but today I've found another seedling that's about 4 inches tall. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
AuntB---isn't amorphophallus the Voodoo Lily aka the Stink Lily??? I got a *huge* bulb from a trade last year and it started growth the end of Feb. I just started potting up my Canna(s) and I've got approx 200 (more) various bulbs, canna tubers, begonias, EE's that I've got to get potted yet. Camping season is 'right around the corner' --- egads!!!...3 more weeks :)
Oh the joy of living down south, I just start everything off on the patio then plant out in the garden. No more rushing to get them inside when the snow or frost come.
Hey JanLynn I smelled a VooDoo Lily ;+} lolol.
But they sure are pretty.
I've stored them dry and let them bloom "naked" - no soil -I let the stem die back and then pot up and offer water... that's how my uncle told me to do it.. and I've been experimenting, too. WOW, Janlynn, you'd better get to planting! (ain't it GREAT!?!) I need to pot stuff up, too, I HOPE to do that this weekend, INSIDE, it'll be too cold to play outside.. :( Seemama, I need to move down there.
Darnnit Kim, not one sprout yet☻nope, not even the Natal Plum. I think the basement is too cold so I will bring them upstairs this week and see if they will get sprouting. I hate my brown thumb,I want a green one like yours☺
green thumbs come with love and care, Prince Charles talks to his plants and you could try that - yourself not Prince Charles coming to do it for you. I thought I could never grow anything at one time, not now though I love growing from seed. they are my babies then.
posyblossom-
Just a thought...do you use the oven on your stove a lot??? For the past couple of years I have used the oven as a makeshift greenhouse. I leave the aplliance light switched on and it provides heat and the essential light w/o 'cooking' the seeds. I started over a dozen seeds this weekend and boy, I'm gonna have way more plants that I'm gonna need!!! Friday night I used little "cups" to soak the various seeds in hydrogen peroxide and water. By Saturday morning (!!!) most of the seeds were sprouting so then I moved them all into peat pellets in their little greenhouses and put them in the oven. Just make certain that you do not turn the oven on until you clear the oven out---LOL! I'll try to take pictures but we have dial-up at home and it takes FOREVER to download the pictures and "send them"... :(
Our oven is electric and I always use the lowest rack position...I'm not sure if this would be a good idea if you have a gas (with a pilot light) oven...

I too am new with seed germination. A lazy gardener I'd call myself. But having seen how fast brugmansia grew from seedlings last year. That motivated me to venturing out with more seeds. lol.
Lu, none of the roses seeds germinated for me, but my natal plum's has roughly 50& germination. I can mail you some of the natal plum seedling, and brugmansia's seedlings when your weather warms up some? With your love and dedication to growing them, you deserve to see those beauties bloom in the garden. I'll help you get started.
Jan, indeed you're a more seasoned gardener than I'm overall. You've many success, congrats.
Kim
Here is one flat of 4" pot brug seedlings, which is ready to be upgrated to the next size pot.
Thanks everyone. I had the seeds on top of the dryer in peat pots and I thought that
might give them enough heat to germinate, but maybe I should have tried the oven, mine is electric. It is a bit frustrating as I thought they would at least germinate a little bit.
Kim, I don't think Brugs are going to work for me here. Maybe if I had a green house to move them into and really get them going. Even the ones I had growing from cuttings are not doing well. I brought one upstairs yesterday and it looked as though it was growing another leaf but a dog came to visit and the cat got scared and knocked the pot over and broke the new growth and leaves off.
Lu, during the winter months brugs are likely to be in semi-dormant stage. Once the weather is free of frost, and they can enjoy the sunshine outdoor. Watch out! They will put on a growth spurt, like teenagers! Those look healthy to me, it will work out if you wanted it to. Look at others in your zone with beautiful blooms. I don't give up on my plants that easy. I kept trying until I succeed. BTW; the picture looks encouraging to me, the cane is healthy looking, even the little one will take root in no time.
Kim
OK you Brug growers. If it ever warms up,out they will go in the bright Pennsylvania Sunshine☺ I am such a wimp and easily give up when I don't think plants are looking good. So I will reform myself and keep trying☺
That is just beautiful.
Mine are still in the garage, but I open the door and give them a little sun daily. They are all putting out little leaves. I mist them with the Recipe dialy. I am getting very excited.
They are beautiful Kim. I hope the ones I have left survive till warm weather. Part of the problem at my house is I have plenty of space in the basement, but I am a bit cramped on the main floor for light and space. Another Brug, in the basement, by the window, just died☻
Lu, some has boasted that they can overwinter brugs with lowlight. By my experience they needs light to survive -- at least those that are not fully established yet. (cuttings). I'm sorry, it must be very frustrating.
HELLO!!! Where is everybody?
I'm doing pretty well---moved a lot of my plants outside to my "GH": Hoop house style, 4' W x 8' L x 6' H. I've had my GH for 6 yrs now and it's been through a lot but it's still standing (knock-on-wood)!!! I store some of my gardening stuff in it during the winter months and now have all my brug starts in it along with starting seeds. I overwinter as much as I can so I'm being a "show-off" and have my flowering geraniums hanging outside. My neighbor next door spends BIG BUCK$ buying all her fancy flowering plants and I always suffer severe plant-envy but she doesn't have anything outside just yet so I'm SHOWING OFF---LOL! and, of course, now the temps are gonna drop this weekend so guess who's gonna have the last laff (neighbor?!) as I'm rushing around like a "crazy old person" :) trying to get my babies to safety.......................UGH!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been there done that around mid March here in our zone. But I think we're pretty safe now from any more frost. But there has been time, I ran back and forth hauling tender plants in and then back out. lol. Brugs takes temp. drop to 30'ish F. here pretty well.
Kim
Lu, I saw your 'lil babiez to the left among the cuttings. See, there you thought you can't grow brugs. Look at how healthy those cuttings look. Congratulation. They do look good. Do prepare to see them shot up as the weather warms up more in your zone.
Kim
We got the GH/Hoop House for $99.00 + tax @ MENARDS 6 years ago and just noticed yesterday that they have another - almost - just like it but wider (6') but didn't see how much it cost. My DH built a wooden frame to attach my GH to after he put down patio stones over paver base for the 'floor'. It has withstood our WI winters, snow and also the Spring winds/storms. I just re-roped the front door panel and the back panel a couple of weeks ago to tighten them up a bit. I also have had some small holes that are/were easily 'mended' with weatherproof clear tape on the insides. One thing that I really like is that the plastic is opague, not clear, and it has zippered windows on the front and back panels for cross ventilation. There is a bar at the top that I'm able to hang planters from also. I know---PICTURES!!! I WILL take some and WILL post them---I WILL!!!
I PROMISE!!!
Jan
I planted 2 of my cross seeds about 2 months ago (I think ... I don't remember when exactly). Only one seed germinated. This is my hand-pollinated cross Pink Beauty X Ecuador Pink. I just potted it up to a bigger size container about 2 weeks ago and now I see all kinds of new growth on it. It is still very small, but is doing quite well. I was really surprised at how easy it is to grow from seed. I didn't do any soaking or pre-planting treatment. I just planted the two seeds in potting soil in a small cup and then just recently potted it up to a larger pot. It is in full sun. (Which is quite warm here right now!) I fertilize it with MiracleGro liquid fertilizer and Fish Emulsion every 2 - 3 weeks. So far, so good!
Kim and Posy - They look GREAT! Congrats on your babies!!
Jan - How awesome about your GH! I always wanted a GH, but no room and here in central/south FL I don't really need one. But if I lived further north, it would be a must have item for me!
JanLynn, Hi I see your close to me. Do you have heat in your GH? I would so love to get one.
Linda
Well here is only one of the seeds that I started from Kim this winter I cant take pictures of all of them as they are now in one gallon pots and are doing well. I have been in the hospital for a while and just got back but I have been doing some transplanting which is well needed it is very good to be able to do it I think......James
James, it's good to see you posting. Sorry to hear you've been under the weather, but glad to know you're home and doing better. Thank you, for the pic. of the little seedling. It's looking real healthy.
Kim
Yes it is I still have more that need transplanting but they are doing just a great.....Thanks for you note of kindness........
James
Becky, I meant to thank you for the seeds of PB x EP you've sent. I successfully germinated two of them, and they're doing very well at present. I'm a little behind compared to yours and James' growing condition. But I'll post the progress of those babiez as I'll have a chance to take some pics.
Kim
Good Morning!
Of course, I had my response all typed, and ready to send, and I LOST IT!!! GRRR!!!
OK---now that I've got that out of my system I'd like to say "Welcome to DG" to Linda and hows about 'we' do a 'new'/continuation thread???...especially for the dial-uppers?
Let's continue here:
