There we go! I'm glad it didn't take long at all to get to you. You're quite welcome James.
Kim
New lil Baby seedlings!!!!! Continuation!!
Yeah I have way to many things I am planting today and transplanting as well.
James
I'm trying out some coffee-filter method with some seeds, will see how they come out. Will post the results. The fresh seeds they're going wild, almost all of them are coming up.
wow congrats chrissy what color of brug is that one that has blooms or is it a seedling so you do not know what color it is...................lol
I say this because the leaves of these two and the flowers are a little smaller but very plentiful, while the leaves of the others are huge ...either way I am thrilled and even the little shoots (I trim the sideshoots because I train to umbrella shapes) are forming Y's at 8" ...I might have to put them in big hanging baskets!
well you never know ............lol I would love to start some hanging baskets this year as well..
James

I received Kim's seeds Saturday. Worked Saturday and Sunday, Will soak them today and plant tomorrow after work. Exciting times coming.
Repotting some today into 4" pots.
Spring is getting closer.
Chrissy, what healthy, beautiful plants you have. Kimarj, Becky, Jan, James, ZZ, Robyn, Aunt B, I am waiting along with you. We will all be able to share the joy.
Marie
I'm happy to hear most of you received the seeds. Lu have your got yours? B? How about you?
Kim
p.s. Chrissy our weather is warming up, wooohooo, we're catching up with you on the growing season.
Oh.. Chrissy, thanks for posting your lovely summery looking pictures, your brugs are marvelous! Such an attentive brug mommy, great work. What fun... Kim, you have seeds coming to me, already??? I didn't go to the P.O. Sat, maybe they are waiting on me?! (It will be the ONLY time a brug ever waits on me!) lol I can't wait for the work day to be over! I just want to report my nursery kids are looking much happier growing in bright natural light. A friend even mentioned they look much happier.. I've probably lost 1/3 of what I started with (over winter), but I found a couple roots on the bad looking ones, and I can't give up, hence - Critical care ward... actually, just requires yet more patience from me, nothing to do now but fuss over them and....wait. I really don't have much hope, they were drying out and turning brown, but I've seen them return from roots....... (I'm in denial, here) but from one or 2 roots...? I doubt it. I'm really dissappointed cause included in the terminal ward is Day Dreams and Species, I'm so bummed... BUT, Kim sent me seeds! YAY! (thanks, Kim, good timing, since I'm facing reality)
Hey Kim, you got babiez, hooray. They are just so cute.
Chrissy, waiting? what the heck is that sweetie waiting on, I see sun and I hope it blooms soon cause I can't wait to see it. I hope it's the orange one. Are you going to self polinate it and /or cross it. If you do I would a few seeds. The nursery is looking great.
Good luck Jan and Marie. I hope they pop quickly. They are a thrill when they do.
Sure wish it would start getting warmer and stop all this snow and ice. I'm getting cabin fever, can ya tell?!
I'm bummed too B on the ones I lost Days dreams and Mountain Magic and Dr. Seuss. I was so hoping to have them this summer. As you say YAY!, I have babiez up and growing.
Okay--here is a what is probably a 'DUUH' question. As those that have spoken with me know, I have grown primarily plumerias, and my experience with brugs is strictly from growing from cuttings. Anyway, with this said, I am now the proud papa of five seedpods on some of my favorite German hybrids: Two pods on my 'Joli', one on my 'Salmon Perfektion', and two on my 'Cerise Wonder'. The Salmon P and Joli pollinated one another as they are next to one another--very close and touncing-- and were the only two plants to bloom around the time these formed---at least in the front of my property. In the very back, Cerise Wonder was blooming nect to 'Creamsicle' and has 'podded'.
Now that all has been said, can someone please tell me when I will know when the pods are ready? Do they split open? Must one wait until they are brown? How deep do you plant them and, do they have a shelf life during which time they must be plated to remain viable? Is it true that most seedlings tend to be white flowered and only a scant few will have nice coloration?
I am used to growing plumerias from seed. I was not planning on doing any hybridizing this year with brugs as I already have tons of plumeria seedlings----however, these sort of volunteered, and I therefore can't resist wanting to plant them, especially with their respective heritages.
Anyway help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! :-)
Brad
Well, Brad... you're hooked on brugs, now. I will try to answer some of your questions, but the people on this thread can answer your seed starting questions better than me. Here is a link to a thread about seed pods. I do know it sometimes takes months for the pod to ripen, it will start turning brown... I've read that the variegated brug pods will probably produce all white plants that die because they can't absorb chlorophyl. I'm not sure about the ratio of white blooms vs colored. That is a very special list of brugs you have there, too! Now, Brad, I bought this plumie at Kmart last year, it has wintered over in my basement.... I'm pretty excited about maybe seeing some blooms this summer.... What do you feed your plumies? I was giving it 20-20-20 occasionally last summer... (sorry, off topic everyone, thanks Brad) http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/803784/
Brad, all the seeds that I harvested, were pollinated back in Sept. So that give you some time frame. Good lucks with your seeds. So far, the fresh seeds germinated with in two weeks. I sowed some seeds that were older, they've yet to sprout up.
Kim
Kim, I got the seeds today, thank you very much, they are soaking right now will plant tomorrow or Wed.
I'm going love all the brugs.
Now I have another question after reading this thread. Do brugs self-pollinate with other blooms on the same tree? If not, are cuttings the only way to keep a brug cultivar true?
Becky,
Most brugs are hybrids, thus they won't self-pollinate. There are two species brugs one is arborea and the other ....? Someone help me out here.....
And yes, to keep the cultivar true propagation by cutting is the only mean to duplicate its form.
Kim
For those of us long to hear from the experts. Let's hear what Alistair has to say about brugmansia from this thread:

Hi from what I have read only arborea and the true suaveolens can self pollinate and all the others need crossing, not only that but some may not cross with others. I think the cross breds (named ones) will cross ok but don't expect anything to be the same as it's parents because they can throw out anything from a previous ancestor ...kind of like the lotto balls ...you never know which gene (ball lol) will pop out and show up. The seeds just get ripe and the pods change texture and colour and as far as I know don't "pop" open although I guess if you left them long enough they might drop off. Please all you people who know about thses things correct my "take" on this as I am new to the lovely Angels and I may be mistaken
chrissy
Kim, got em!! :) Dancin the happy dance round my lone Maya bloom in the basement) I plan to soak Friday and plant Saturday... Need to check out Alistair's thread..
Aunt B & Robyn you have Dmail :)
As the seedlings come up, should we wait until they get a couple pair of true leaves before we transplant into their individual pot? James, Joyce? Your recommendation, please.
Kim
I have transplanted just the little arches! LOL Your talkin to a full blown brug addict... I hear you are supposed to wait till they get 2 true leaves.. but I don't. Never lost a seedling from transplanting yet!
Thank you, Joyce, I'll prepare to transplant those babiezz.
Just remember not too big on the pot.. Start out small and move up one size at a time. I actually start in 2.5" pots when they are too little to go in a 4" then I go from 4" to 1gallon.. then they have to go outside.. :)
HI Aunt Bee---thanks for the information.
As for plumies fertlizer--you could use a good "Bloom Booster" liquid, or one I recently discovered is Dynamite 15-15-15 a very slow resin coated time release and a real good one! Plumies respond well to it. in th past I have used a time released Blossom Booster I bought in large bags at HD, with a few foliar treatments of Spray_n_Grow given on average twice a month. Hope this helps and sorry for the Off Topic ya'll. ;-)
Brad
Brad,
How often would you use the Dynamite for the Brugs?
Mickey
Thanks Brad! (sorry everyone, I just had to know) Kim, your little newborns are soo cute! They look very happy! It's Thursday!!!! I get to plant my seeds Saturday!!! YAY!! I'm bringing my mini greenhouse and a heat mat upstairs, it's about 8 weeks to set stuff outside, so I'll be starting a bunch of annuals in there anyway..... It's plantin' time!
Yes, B. Spring is right around the corner. Wooohooo. I don't mean to rub it in, but it will get here several weeks before your zone. If there is any consolation, James' and Joyce's spring arrival will be even sooner than mine.
Let's the growing season begins.
Brad, I've planted Brug seeds that were over a year old.. they still germinate, but not as well. They keep well.
Yes, it takes a lot of seedlings to get a good one... Unfortunately.
It's like playing the lottery though! When you get a winner, there is nothing like it! I grew 80 something year before last.. nothing worth naming. Last year I grew 60 something and have 3 that show promise.
The percentage of whites does not seem to be as bad as it was years before.. with the better crosses now, it seems there is more color coming out. Might just be me being optimistic since the sun is out and it's so beautiful outside! LOL Nice thought since it looks like you have a few hundred seedlings in your near future! LOL
edited to add...
Mickey.. I don't think a slow release is enough for brugs.. I toss in hand fulls of steer manure and Osmocote when I transplant and still fertilize at least once a week! Brugs are pigs for fertilizer... Slow Release is like a side salad.. nice but not enough to fill em up. LOL
