New lil Baby seedlings!!!!! Continuation!!

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the link on "Dr. D" Kim---beautiful! All my brug seeds are still "sleeping" :(

I did also start some seeds from my Noid RoS the same day that I started my brug seeds and a couple have germed so that makes me happy. It'll be interesting what color the seeds bloom. I got two cuttings from a neighbor 3 yrs ago and she didn't even know what color bloom they would be. It's lavender with a burgundy eye, absolutely stunning coloring, IMHO :)

Hi everyone, for those of you that may not get good results from germinating the seeds. Dmail me later, I'll mail out a few seedlings for you when your climate allows. Like James, I've nearly 99.9 % germinated, and now I don't really know what all to do with them lol.
Kim
p.s.
I received a dozen of Whiskers x Inspiration seeds, only one germinated. I'll keep you all posted.

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Hi all,
Work sure puts a damper in my gardening, and coming into the forums.
I soaked Kim's seeds, peeled them, then put them in paper towels and a plastic bag. I potted some up today that were sprouting. I potted 18 brugs that have come from seeds, into gallon pots and put them outside to get a little sunshine. It got in the mid 50's. I will keep them in the closed garage at night and put them out on the warmer days.
I also put my cuttings and large plants out. Hopefully the ones from last year that I kept in their pots will start to grow. I am going to start fertilizing with the recipe.
I potted 8 pink moonvine into gallon pots that were climbing on everything. Then I put a tall stick by them. Hopefully they will grow up the stick.
My hardy hibiscus are doing wonderfully. I can hardly wait to plant them outside. I also have some hibiscus that I got from Trisha's nursery. They are growing very well.
I only have 2 canna, but they are looking happy.

I am going to be gone for 2 weeks starting the 28th. I am teaching my daughters how to take care of the plants. I think I will be more worried about my little plants than I am of my family left to care for them.

Good planting everyone. Your plants look great. I am having such fun with mine.

Marie, have a great trip and enjoy your time away. Looking forward to hear from you.

Here are some of my seedlings that were sewn on Feb. 4th.

Kim, they look great.
How many do you have now? We are going to color the world. hehehe

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Marie,
There are too many to count. lol, I sowed 3-4 seeds per 4" pot. And that's a full flat of maybe 50 (pot)? The weather is warming up, I'm getting ready to transplant them into individual pots. The cost of pots and growing medium is going to send me to bankrupcy is "fur" sure. lol. Not to mention cost of fertilizer and this and that. lol.
Kim

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

WOW, Kim!!! That's a lot of brug babies! I would love for you to send me one (for postage reimbursement) if you're able---they are so healthy looking...I haven't had any germ yet :(

Jan

(edited to say: I asked people at work and neighbors who buy plants from the nurseries, for the pots and that way I've got a "ton". To clean them just wash/soak in bleach water and let air dry. I also save all my "old" soil and dump it in a huge plastic bin. We bought a newer microwave so I was able to have the other one so that I could nuke (sterilize) the recycled soil. When I pot up thirsty plants, such as EE's and brugs, I mix in some of the polysorb water crystals. Hope that this may help you.)

Kim you sure got a lot of mouths to feed!! LOL!
Great tip JanLynn :)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Jan, I'll mail out some for you if your didn't germinate, since it's a little more involved to send out live-plants.

Kimarj, you aren't kidding; lots of "Hungry mouths" to feed since brugs are fertilizer hogs. lol, lol.
Kim

Kim I now have hundreds of these little babies too (and still many many pods) ...so funny ...from no knowledge of seeds to hundreds ...whew a lot of work (and money) to grow out ...much as I love them I think I will be opening an orphanage to adopt some out to good Australian gardeners, having never sent "baby plants" out to anyone before could someone tell me how it is done? or do you already know how Kim.I have sent out cuttings and seeds but seedlings is another story. Who would have thought we could have too many when we started on this journey ...seeing the first seed ...let alone seed germinate is a thrill I will never forget. Well off to repot some more!

Chrissy,
I purchased half a dozen seedlings last summer from an interstate DGer. The seedlings came in looking contorted, and twisted (because they were seeking out for light source in a confined box). But with some nuturing, those took off after a couple of months.

I kept telling myself, if I ever get into the business for anytype of 'mail orders' It has got to be something inert like gold, and not living plants. Because I'll be flat broke and won't make any profit out of them. lol

At the meantime, I continue to enjoy my gardening hobby, and share with those like-minded gardener.
Kim

Hi Kim ...could you tell me how the little seedlings were packed?
if you can remember ...and what size they were?
chrissy

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Chrissy, they were shipped with small amount of potting medium, and compartmentallized bins, tightly packed with packing peanuts, thus prevent breakage. Others used shredded newspaper ect. There should be a thread/posting regarding packaging somewhere here on the classic threads archives.
Kim

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Kim---thank you, truly!!!...but, when I got home yesterday I picked all the seeds out of the potting medium and one-by-one peeled part of the cork from each one so time will tell! I'll keep you updated. As for mailing "potted plants" I just recently sent one via USPS using the "shoe box" priority box. I made sure that the soil was moist (not 'wet') then wrapped plastic saran wrap around the bottom of the pot and up around the top of the soil. I used some scotch tape to keep the saran wrap from coming undone but it wasn't tight enuff that it would inhibit air flow or cause root rot. It wasn't a big plant but I used that box size as I wrapped the plant in lots of newspaper to insulate and protect it. Before I took the box to the P.O. I "shook" it (gently :) and there was no inside shifting/movement. It made it thru the cold, and probably rough-handling by the USPS, "ok"...just needs TLC; hopefully it'll grow on to be a beautiful plant...will root more cuttings tho just in case (that is, as soon as the 2 feet of snow cover on the mama plant melts--LOL!!!).

will keep in touch...Jan

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Jan, I'll send you some shortly, keep touch. I maybe able to send you cuttings instead of seedling to assure safe arrival. At the meantime, I'll keep you posted of the new "Hybrids" development. If they turn out some "keeper" in the future, I'll then be able to take cutting later in the season for you.
Should I not be online posting due to the busy planting season ahead. dmail me.

Updating on my seedling progress. Here is a tray of seedlings that are ready to go into individual pots. These are being 'hardening off' outdoor in our currently mild wheater.

Another batch of seedlings that were transplanted into their first own individual pots couple of weeks or so ago...

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Wow! How healthy they are. Very nice work, Kim. I love how seedlings look when they go into their individual pot..(brugs or marigolds or whatever) they look so neat and full of potential... I don't even mind tray after tray in front of my french doors... (me, crazy? sure.) I need some advice on the seeds you sent. The first weekend in March, after they were soaked and scraped, I put them between a little piece of damp paper towel, put that in a baggie. I put the baggie on the glass shelves above the kitchen sink, in front of south window, with blinds to keep out direct light. I also make sure there is some air in the bag and that the paper towel doesn't ever get dry. I'm yet to see any sprouts. Will it just take longer? A friend suggested using carbonated water to add more oxygen... ?

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

I put mine in the south window too and with full light. They need lots of light. I also spray the paper towel with water and peroxide mix. They take a couple of weeks to germinate sometimes. So I would say it would be soon.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh, thanks Robyn, I'm anxious to have a tray of them like Kim. lol I'll be more patient... maybe they'll start popping this week! I'll move them into more direct light.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

B, the 1st week of March, and today is the 17. Ten days. So it should be ready to sprout soon. Each of us has our own way of germinating seeds. I followed Joyced's lead on sowing them. She used the potting medium and the overhead light method. She has great success with it, and I had terrific success out of it too, over the winter. Mine took 10-14 days to spout. And with my fresh seeds. I've had at least a 99% success rate.
James, on the other hand he used ordinary potting, let them sit facing the bright window sill, his too has great success.
Note; I barely press my seeds into the potting medium, keep them moist and didn't need to water them again until they've germinated. Using the dome indoor, is quite trickly though. They're prone to get mildew if we don't vent them properly.
Kim

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

My pleasure B, oh btw I finally found my Maypop seeds, I only have 2 seeds, would you like them?

I took pictures of my new babies and as soon as I can get to the other puter I'll post them.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh, Robin,YES, Thank you, Thank you! I want to see if they will be hardy for me here in 5b/6a, whatever zone they're calling it now. AND maybe I'm being too impatient on my seeds sprouting, Kim so sweetly pointed out, it's only been 10 days. I finally gave up on the ones I put in the potting medium earlier this year... I'm going to have success, just have to find the method that works for me.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

I've tried them 3 different ways and the way that works best for me is to soak them in H20 and H202 for 24 hrs. peel back a little bit of the cork and soak another 24 hr. then plant them. They usually come up in 10 - 14 days. like everyone else does.

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

AuntB...

I'm withcha...mine (brug seeds) haven't done a thing...sob :(

I also am starting some of the seeds from my RoS and have 4 babies that germed and are growing (YIPPEE!!!). I'm anxious to find out what color/s they grow up to be but I don't know if I'll see any flowers from them this year...but, one can hope?!

Update on my seedlings that were sown on Feb. 24th. These are being hardening off outdoor (applicable in my zone), I do bring them in side infrequently when temp. dips too low. Among my seeds, I've 3 named seedlings from fellow DGers. They are progressing quite well.

GOOd NEWS!!! After giving up hope of any brug seed germination I "dumped" all my brug seeds together in one seed starter tray and, lo and behold, I've got a BRUG BABY!!! YIPPEE!!! I don't know whose seed it is but I've got a seedling. I've been usually checking every day and, not having high hopes, I missed a day. Two days later, when I did decided to check, I found the baby-oh joy!!! Now, I want more!!!!!!

You will probably find a whole parade of seeds popping now ...congrats :)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Hang in there Jan, you'll have more coming. This is the first spring ever, that I've brug blooming. I've this pink one which I called 'BBB' I've these for years outdoor. Last winter I decided to keep a couple cutting indoor. And guess what?....

Thumbnail by Lily_love

Whoo Hoo! ... Kim does it have a perfume? ...I am thrilled for you
chrissy

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Chrissy, I haven't met a brug that doesn't smell good, especially at night. Even my DH got to smell the lovely 'butter scotch' fragrant last evening. :-)

Chrissy, this is one of the few seedlings that I started, although I fertilized them with half strenght balanced fertilizer, they do appear 'jaundice'? Or is it typical for lighter color brug's seedlings to behave this way?

Thumbnail by Lily_love

Kim I am new to baby Angels too and can only speak from my own experience ...I don't know what your temps are like ...if they have been in a nice cosy indoors place it may be just a little bit of a shock to go outside.I ease my shadhouse stuff out into lots of shade ...then dappled shade ...then morning sun only. The other thing is just be careful with fertilzer. I think until the plants have strong roots and warmer temps I only give seaweed extract and very diluted fish emulsion ...if the roots are strong even if there is some sort of damage to the leaves the plant will recover.I think everything is fine and you are doing well ...when we had nothing but grey sky the little seedlings just sat about but we have had some sun and they are off and running ...these ones were planted in mid January

WHOOO HOOO!!! You ALL are great encouragement!

Yesterday I found FOUR MORE BABY BRUG SEEDLINGS---I AM SO ECSTATIC (just in case you couldn't tell-LOLOL!!!)!!! I am so, so hooked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AuntB, have any of your seeds germed yet? This is really peculiar but I had noticed a bit of fuzziness (possibly mold?) on the top of my soil mix so I decided to sprinkle cinnamon on the dirt as it is an anti-fungal. I couldn't find the cinnamon but had a cinnamon/sugar mixture in the cabinet so I decided to use that and the day after I did that is when I found my first seedling! Coincidence???

A VERY HAPPY NEW MOMMY--- Jan
