Sun is shinning and not much wind which makes the ten degrees today seem a lot warmer than the ten degrees yesterday. Should warm up to around freezing and then tonight the snow/freezing- rain/rain mess will arrive. Supposed to be mostly rain tomorrow and thats just fine with me. One to three inches of snow before the change over predicted.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

12 and partly sunny here.

Thomaston, CT

No wind today--expecting a wintry mix this after. Hope rain will wash away the white tom. Mama---you are an orchid guru! I only have moths & 1 catt. I did buy a bloom booster, & will try to get them going--are yours in a greenhouse?

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

It's 0 degrees here. Sunny. Snow tonite, sleet tomorrow AM turning to rain. Like pixie only south!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

23 degrees and sunny, wind is 15mph at the airport, but much less here at my house. It is suppose to get to 32 today. But it suppose to climb into the high 40's tomorrow, with rain. Today the greenhouse will get into the 80's with all this sun. But I am in the middle of cleaning out closets which I have to get done before spring, because I don't want to spend any time doing those icky chores when I can be out side playing in the dirt. Where does all this crap come from? I will get out there to water and soak up some warmth. Lots of things in bloom. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

80's sound real nice!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Hi everyone! It's currently 25 degrees and clouding up with snow supposed to start in a little while. Had to run some errands in town and things were hectic since they are releasing the schools early in anticipation of the wintry mix. My husband has been having difficulty with a painful toe and finally was able to see the podiatrist who told him he has frostbite! This happened about 10 days ago.

I don't have a greenhouse, Robin. I have a sunroom/sparoom with east facing windows and a south facing sliding door. All the windows have screens and 2 of the skylights can open so I can get plenty of fresh air. We also have 2 ceiling fans which I run on low to provide air movement, and 1/2 the tile floor has radiant heat. The room has its own programmable thermostat so I can control when to heat and drop the room. I watch the humidity and have applied some frosted contact-type film on one of the sliders so the orchids don't burn. In the summer, only 3 orchids will go outdoors and the rest stay in the room unless it gets too warm- then I bring them into the air conditioning. I'm not always successful with all the plants- I certainly lose my share of them. But isn't it great to have something in bloom all year long! It's repotting season and I have lots to do. The best thing about this room is it's attached to family room so I don't even have to venture outside in the nasty weather!

I fertilize weakly, weekly for three weeks and on the 4th I use a bloom booster. The smaller pots get watered more often because they dry out faster.

Where in CT is Thomaston? I'm planning to meet an old friend in Norwalk two weekends from now, weather permitting. I want to pick the brains of anyone out there who can give some recommendations.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - good luck with your husband!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Thanks Victor. The doc gave him a script and told him to use wool socks and warm up with a heating pad. He should be OK.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Norwalk is close to NY - 45 minutes from here...
i've been there a couple of times, but i don't know much about it except there are a lot of rich people there. And they have a concert hall in their city hall which is very Norman Rockwell-esque except for some really weird murals.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

I've been to Norwalk before, quite a few years ago. We went to the Marine Aquarium and IMAX theater when my kids were small. I'm looking for other things to do as well. We haven't seen each other in more than 33 years! She's taking the ferry over from LI and I'm driving down from my home in upstate NY.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Where does she live on Long Island? Sounds like a fun time is in store for both of you.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

She lives in Greenport. And you're right , this will be so much fun! We've been catching up thru email since October. No hubbies, no kids, just us spilling our guts!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Been snowing lightly but steadily here for about 45 minutes. About 1/4 to 1/2 inch so far.

Poop its heading my way.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Mamasita - Greenport is five minutes from me!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Light snow here, too. No accumulation yet, but we're supposed to get it. Temp is 23.

My friend has lived in Greenport for 9-10 years. Sounds like a nice place, but miserable when trying to get off the island. That's why we chose CT for our reunion- she will take the Port Jeff ferry over and then the train to Norwalk. I'll have the car, so we can get around. Long Island gets a lot less snow than I do, so the weather will be a factor for us.

Just starting to spit a flake here or there. The skies are grey.

Lots of accidents reported in my area.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Powdered sugar type of snow here and so far it's not sticking to the street.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Very fine snow falling steadily here. The streets and grass are covered. My son works as an ER tech- I'm sure he'll probably need to work late.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I was looking out at the snowpile in the driveway the other day and commented to my wife on how big it it, she said it could be a lot taller if I would shovel it up higher. All I could do is roll my eyes on that.

Here was last year.

We finally got a teeny bit of rain here today, but now we are in a tornado warning. Bummer. Severe weather watch for all night tonight. We've been thinking through where we can go in the house without any windows. Hopefully, we won't need to know, but it's good to make yourself think through what you need to do.

Al - that's a neat snowscape!!

mamasita - I hope you and your friend have a ball!!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

bigcityal, we have had piles like that before, just not this year- thank you, God! There is one year back in the mid 90s when it snowed here every other day. My youngest son would get up in the AM, take one look outside and say, "Oh, no!", even though they had a snow day. I feel your pain!

We are currently getting some fine, steady snow which will change to sleet and freezing rain. Tomorrow, it will be heavy rain- up to 2 inches. I'd almost rather have the snow.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Thanks, DonnieBrook! Our messages crossed. I hope things turn out OK tonight. That type of weather doesn't usually hit us until spring.

If anyone has suggestions for this grand reunion, let me know. I've already proposed that each of us bring a bottle of a local wine to share, either together or to bring home to hubby! Anything else would be great!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Heavy wet dense snow here - just an inch or two - but it is supposed to turn to sleet by late tonight. It is pretty yucky now. Definitely a good night to stay in.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

My son just called on his way home from Poughkeepsie. He said the roads are really bad. I haven't heard any sanders or plows.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Just looked outside and it's still snowing and 24 degrees. We have about 3 inches so far but won't shovel or blow it because of the forecast for sleet and freezing rain. We've learned over the years not to remove that insulating layer. Hope everyone is snuggie-warm and safely off the roads.

Looks purty, don't it? As long as you don't have to drive in it!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

True. I used to have to commute to NYC in it.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

And now half of Dutchess County commutes 1 1/2 to 2 hours to the city. We've become a bedroom community.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Wow, and I thought I was too far from the city for a commute. I'm in Mahopac.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

my spanish professor lives in Brooklyn and commutes to new haven 3x a week. he has done this for i think 8 years?
