Today's Weather in Your Garden - 12

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

43 degrees wind out of SSE 21mph. I asked DH about this wind direction which is not normal for us. He muttered it is not a "holding wind" Hurricanes come from that direction. We are not getting a hurricane. Just thought it an odd direction. We had snow flurries last night. It is suppose to get to near 50 today with increasing wind. Patti

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes Patti, the holding wind that won't let the storm pass. It's holding it here until it has done enough damage!!

I just went out to try and get the car up the driveway... after about 10 attempts I gave up... just sliding all over.. and almost wiped out a few times up and down the driveway on foot... amazing that there is solid ice under now 3 inches of slush ... accuweather has me listed for 32 degress... my outside therm. says 41 but it's on the glass and I think the house warms it up a bit... guess I am not leaving at 9 like I expected

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Snow 18°
Feels Like: 8°
Barometer: 30.01 in and falling
Humidity: 91%
Visibility: 0.25 mi
Dewpoint: 16°
Wind: NNE 7 mph
Sunrise: 6:43 am
Sunset: 5:04 pm

First they said 5-8" of snow, then 8-12" now they just announced 12-14" of snow followed by 1/4 - 1/2 inch of ice. It should stop by 8pm. How much do weathermen get paid? Cause I think I could of predicted the weather hour by hour too!

I think the brunt of the storm has moved your way.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Sorry, pixie, I will go out side an suck real hard to get the wind to change direction. You are getting hammered, again. Perhaps that is your very astute weather mans problem. Patti

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

The normal weather man has himself stuck ontop Mt. Washington at this time.....don't think he's getting back to the station anytime soon! LOL
I really should be used to this, these are the kind of winters of my chilhood. In 1969 I could sit on top of the snowbank on the side of the road and touch the power lines. 15-20' snowbanks that year, we literally had to jump out of the 2nd floor window to shovel the snow out from the front door so we could open it. Those memories make todays storm look minor. Then of course there was the ice storm of 1998, the flood of 1987......today will be a piece of cake come to think of it!!!!

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I do the same thing here, pixie. I remember my first NE winter in 1970, when I asked when the snow melts thinking it would be 2 days like NJ and found out they weren't kidding when they answered, "April." Those early winters were non-stop snow. Pulling out on a street meant risking your life because of no visibilty due to the snowbanks.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I will stay down here.... but I feel for you guys

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Some snow yesterday but it's gone now that we're at 49 with rain predicted all day long and into tomorrow morning.

North Augusta, ON

7 inches of new snow and still coming down. It's a good thing I worked yesterday 'cause I ain't goin nowhere today :))

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

We've got 8-10" already and it's still snowing. Don't expect it to change over to freezing rain for 3 or 4 more hours....I may get that 14" after all.

North Augusta, ON

I don't think we're going to get the freezing rain, it's -10C (16F).
Would have to warm up a lot.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Pixie, any idea of the total snow accumulation that you have had so far and how it compares with the record years? Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

33 and lots of rain and snow melt.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Not sure, i'll see if I can find that info. I did read this in a paper this morning:
"So far this season, Portland has recorded more than 70 inches of snow, and Caribou has recorded more than 120 inches."

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Sucks for Caribou. We are under 70 I know, 6th highest all time already though. More tonight.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

We ended up with a few inches. Still under 10 for the year for sure.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Lets just say im somewhere between them. Portland is on the coast and im inland more, Caribou is waaayyyyy up North. If I had to venture a guess i'd say around 80-85

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Three to four inches of heavy wet snow over night. Heavy rain now, temp rising through the day, just at freezing now. Not much wind.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Spoke too soon on the wind it is blowing pretty good now and all of a sudden its very foggy. Warm air must be blowing in. That part of this mess I like.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Just started sleeting here, hitting the windows pretty hard. Here is a shot of our total of snow for today.....before the sleet started.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wow you beat me by a long shot Pixie... lots of flooding here now with the non stop rain

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Great visual. One pic....
All the branches and cars are icing up here. I never know how the roads are, since we are always worse here (but it's a short road). Very drippy. Waiting for a few more degrees.....

Thomaston, CT

A big ugly mess here! 3.5 in of snow, freezing rain, now pouring down rain--driveway & basement flooded--plow guy didn't push the snow far enough back to let the drive drain--Mamasita-- way up in thread you asked where we are --Thomaston is in western CT between Waterbury & Litchfield, although my part of town is close to Harwinton & Plymouth--Thomaston has no land --& what we do have was taken by 3 federal flood control dams--your orchid setup sounds perfect! Mine reside on a tiled plant shelf--west window--& go out for summer vac, I've been using weak fert., but today they got their 1st bloom booster! Have fun in Norwalk--was there yrs ago with a class of 7th graders--we went to I_MAX & aquarium . I'm blocking it from memory--7th graders being so much fun!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Robin today is the reason I am so happy we installed a french drain and sub-pump last year.... OMG I would be in our basement with a shop vac for days after this... when the ground is frozen I get a lot of run off from the hills around here... my back and side yards look like frozen swimming pools .. right now I wouldn't be chatting... I would be vacuuming water.... if it wasn't for those pumps

North Augusta, ON

Freezing drizzle has begun...jammies day!!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Victor - that first photo is one you should set aside for the photo contest. Gorgeous!

My Goodness......does it ever stop up there? We got our share of good, soaking rain here....so needed!! At the moment it is 67 and the rain is just ending. I think we got an inch and a half. Yay!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Lee Anne, im with you on a jammies day! LOL

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Well I tried clothes, but after the second set got soaked I agree it's a jammies day!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I caught this guy wandering around the yard today.... sorry I couldn't get a better picture

Like you Robindog, we got about 3.5 inches of snow-sleet. The temp has been hanging around 34 deg. all morning and into this afternoon. Everything is slush. We went out to clear a path for the water to run into the backyard and to the creek. Our basement floods when the water table rises only in the warmer months. After flooding twice in 6 months, we installed a sump pump. We also would be spending days with a shop-vac and baling things out. Let's hope the frozen ground will be enough to keep that water table from rising!

For those of you in the south and other areas with drought conditions, I hope you are receiving much needed precip. I'd send you some of ours, if I could.

I also try to block out some of the field trips I've made with my sons' classes! There is something about that junior high age group that tries your patience! That being said, I always tell people that I had more fun on those field trips than the kids! Maybe someday when I have grandchildren, they'll let me chaperone again.

It sounds like we're not really too far from each other. Danbury is only about a 30 minute drive on I-84. Keep me posted on the progress of your orchids, and other plants.

Great photos, onewish1! I love the red foxes.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Awesome shots Allison! Will you evict him now? LOL

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

don't know if the rain is making him look sort of mangy or he is sick... I don't mind him as long as he stays away from my yorkies

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They are beautiful.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

well, the rain has melted all the snow here, except what the plows piled up. i think we are going to have ducks soon, there is SO much water out there. It's been dark all day, but it is weirdly warm - 49 degrees...

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my thermometer says 46 ... accuweather says 39

???

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Should we believe you or your own eyes??
