Best/Worse/What did I learn today? Pt.30 Visit with Friends

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

hellnzn, I have to tell you a story, hopefully it will warm your heart a little.

We had 2 cats, unfortunately , we also live in front of a busy road. A couple of months ago, our male cat got hit. Such a heartbreaker already and then the daughter was so upset. The female, his little buddy, seemed sad like she should at first. Then the neighbor's female cat, sensing the territory was no longer really protected by a bigger cat, started coming into our yard to fight our cat.
The cat, who was afraid of absolutely nothing before, will not even go outside at all unless I force her out.

It's gotten to the point where I couldn't stand it anymore, and talked to the old man about getting another cat (I guess it takes two to hold it down). My daughter's birthday is coming up...so, it's gonna be a good time. Suddenly, out of nowhere, she wants to go outside tonight, and didn't seem to want to come in...it was kinda cute. I almost think the cat figured it out on purpose cause she wanted a new friend

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Trop it wouldn't surprise me one bit! Happy kitty shopping! LOL

Yesterday driving to work the roads were terrible. As you know some of the drivers drive crazy. I was just putting along because I left in plenty of time. As long as no one is behind me I am a happy driver.

Seed you are not bonkers just a very loving and proud parent!

Liz I planted black hollyhocks in them last year. If they make it threw the winter I will get blooms this year.In the past I have planted morning glories in them. I can't seem to decide what I want there. But would like the hollyhocks so am keeping my fingers crossed. You can get those tubs at farm supply places for about $13 ea. But these are old ones my mom had. I just love planting in stuff like that.

Have to go and get some breakfast.

Pacifica, CA

morning all,

vicki i have a couple, and especially here hollyhocks just take over now i think i might try them again great idea i had planted a few pink ones omg by the next season they were crazy so i spent most of the time pulling them up but i think keeping them in a container i t might work for me.

dawn, great picture hope your doing good

judy, great news for you you have been busy hope all is well at work so hard to see that

tropicanna, are they funny, just when we think we have them figured out they show us different what kind of kitty are you getting?

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

In theory we want to get a grey male kitten from a shelter. We would have a pretty set of cats then, with one black and one grey.

I need to start calling around to find him sometime next week

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning..just finished catching up with messages from yesterday..Suzanne's 50th birthday today!!!

She is leaving for Dr.'s appt. this afternoon and I'll hitch a ride witht he girls, so because I had to meet her 1/2 way to do so I was leary of the bad weather, but just took my time...had wanted to go to Barrie to p.u. birthday cake but no car, no cake..maybe one of the girls can pick one up at lunch..50th deserves a cake..had given her the stained glass lamp so today gave her an angel that matches..lol..then niece in office next door had birthday on Sat. so brought one in for her..that only left Cindy without one so had to bring her one too..so funny!!!

We had a staff meeting scheduled for tomorrow, they are calling for one heck of a storm tomorrow so Paul did not come out and officially say stay home tmr. but between all of us they've given us each a piece of info..told Suzanne for all of us NOT to take a lunch..we're ordering pizza and having our meeting this aft...part is celebrating Suzanne's birthday but we're all getting prepared for tomorrow off..usually only work 4 hrs. anyway..we're here today lol..it's PAYDAY!...so will make for a short work-week...must stop off at the stained glass studio to get more solder and foiling tape...might get to do me a pretty lamp..

Liz..now you have all your supplies you are ready to go.. were you able to drill the holes..maybe I could try mine this weekend..thought I might look at the $$$ store for strands of beads..check Michaels and they were lovely but wanted $3.98 per strand but could cut them in 2 so might be easier than stringing some..

You all must have the perfect soil then for hollyhocks..I must have planted hundreds of seeds and no go..have done so again this fall so we'll see if they pop up...black ones sound awesome...hope the headache is gone...probably the weather causing it..they say to drink a lot of water..

Judy, congrats to those children of yours..you can certainly brag and be proud...how's the blanket coming..guess you've been too busy to be working on it..so sad, having to say goodbye..perhaps you can keep in touch..you'll still be there until they close the place..lol..

Dawn, Mushi looks so very tired of life in that photo...I'm sending you a doggie angel of Mushi to keep by your side...Mushi was what kind of dog???

Trop..weekend coming up...out you go 'cat hunting' ..DD must be so excited..nothing like a furry to warm the heart..

Carol, noticed on breakfast television this morning that rather than 6am tomorrow they'll be on at 5am to keep everyone updated on the mega storm rolling through..Toronto I think have 1600 pieces of road equipment which are waiting on the sidelines..am sure we'll be staying home but hope it doesn't reach you..if so, you'd better get comfy and stay inside..

Vicki we sound much alike..when I see the line-up behind me and feel for road conditions I'm doing ok then I pull aside, sit and let them pass then continue on my way..they must say...look at that old lady driving..lol..but when it's 65 mph let's say and in bad conditions I'm doing 40-45mph in a blizzard (at best) then I feel I'm going quick enough..

Will have to look for tubs as well...

well, shortly to have our meeting..

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Thanks for the story Trop. I really understand that. When I had to take Mushi back to my X's, My other Shar Pei (BETTY they are Chinese Shar pei's, the wrinkled puppies)koala who is Mushi's dd, got so depressed she would not even look up or wag her tail when we got home.

Your kitty needs another cat to give her a play friend. My friend's cat went into a depression when it's friend died and it eventually got sick and died too.

I read that Shar Pei's need a companion at all times or they get anxious or depressed and Koala got depressed and Mushi would eat through a wood fence every day and run around looking for her or me or both for two years, even when my X put wire over the wood, he would chew it off and be bleeding. He cried when I had him away from the other male while I was at church or school, for his own protection, but he chewed through the baby gate and put his whole face through it.

Mushi stopped escaping the day my X's girlfriend got another dog. Interesting. I look forward to my angel Betty. I'm glad you didn't call the other day because I was gone most of the day and when I got home I was in such a bad place that talking would have made it worse for me then. But thank you for the thought.

I gardened the other day, bought a White wisteria and put it in my lasagna garden, which has way less soil than I need. So I will hope all the breaking down of stuff made my under soil have better drainage too. I had to put wood side walls in the area so I could plant it above the good soil and add more to cover it. I may have to plant this way in sections this year because I can't dig since I have wire under it for the gopher which is still alive.

I am so looking forward to planting and spring. I put preemergent down and weed killer to there and treated my willow for borers. It is the beginning. I put SHAKE AWAY RABBIT, REPELLENT DOWN THIS MORNING, because they ate my smalle hollyhocks. I had like 30 and they are down to the ground.grrrrrrr

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

It's raining, it's pouring, I wish I was still snoring!

It has rained here all night and tons of accidents on 95 due to standing water. West of us (Ruby) they are getting ice. Amazingly, by this afternoon, we should have thunderstorms!

Had to get up early to take DD and girlfriends to their friday morning bible breakfast. Got to work at 7:10 and I love it early like this. It's quiet and no one is here!

Is everyone wearing their RED today - to support the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day for Women?

Had a setback on my quilt that I'm working on. I have 24 star squares and I was "squaring" them off and oops, cut them too small. So I have to remake 7 of them! AGH! I had to search for more fabrics because I didn't have enough of the original. Went thru my stash and found a few to use and also bought 3 off of eBay that looking good. Hopefully, I can get them all sewed and joined to the middle body this weekend.

We have girl's night tomorrow! About 6 of us (neighbors) are going to see 27 Dresses and maybe dinner. It will be nice just to get out. We used to play Bunco but I just couldn't get a new group to commit to one night a month. What's up with that????

Anyone doing anything special for Super Bowl? I volunteered my neighbor - they have a HUGE tv. I usually have it at my house but I'm tired of that. It won't be anything big, just head over to watch the Giants (hopefully!) win and eat some munchies!

Well, I hear peeps starting to wok so I better start too! I'll chat back later!

Jeannine

Judy - That's so awesome how well your kids are doing in school. You must be so proud.
Have fun at your party. It sounds like you'll have a great time. I'm not sure if you've found out what curling is yet (from the last thread). It's sort of like life-sized shuffleboard on ice - if that makes any sense. There are two teams of four players each. The teams alternate sliding heavy rocks down to the other end of the ice, two rocks per person. While one person throws the rocks another stands at the end to show them where to aim. The other two team members sweep the ice in front of the sliding rock. At the end there is a bullseye. The goal is to end up with your team's rocks closest to the centre of the bullseye. The team with the rock closest to the centre scores a point for each of their rocks that are closer. After the points are recorded you turn around and do the same thing in the other direction. Usually we play 8 'ends'. The reason it's called curling is because depending on how you throw the rock, the condition of the ice and other factors that are beyond my understanding, the rock does not go straight down the ice. It 'curls' especially as it slows down. Here's a link. http://www.curling.ca/learn_to_curl/how_to_curl/flash.asp

Well, I have a little girl who just arrived to be babysat for the day so I guess I better go. I'm babysitting today plus I have two 12-hour days this weekend so I'll be busy. I'm so glad we decided to have Sonora's sleepover next Friday instead of this Friday.

I hope you all have a great day and that the weather isn't too bad for you.

I almost forgot. Last spring I ordered a bunch of hoya cuttings from David Liddle in Australia. Well, my hoya davidcummingii has bloomed. I'm soooooo excited. I have some pictures but they're not on my computer yet. I'll try to get them on sometime today and post a couple.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Hello all,
Just catching up on reading all the posts. As I was readng about the rabbits everyone seems to have the snowplow came by and a rabbit came tearing out of a garden that is close to the road..and I chuckled..
Now Rachie..I believe has rabbits as pets..not the pesky wild kind that eat our plants. They are cute to see running around though..so I guess it is just something we will have to live with.

Judy..that Ragedy Ann and and Andy material is so perfect for twins..Great find!..nice to hear about your kids and how well they are doing. I was talking to my 20 year old grandaughter this morning....asked how she is doing in her university courses..and she said she is doing very well. She is in her third year of nursing..and her goal is to be a nurse practioner. It is career that is further than a registered nurse and below a Doctor. ..so I am very proud of her and told her so.

Betty..so glad you are staying home ..safe and cozy. I'll bet you are getting the snow a lot heavier than we are here.
Thay are calling for the snow to continue all day.

Well I see the mailman has come by..so I'm going to go shovel the walk a bit and get the mail and the newspaper.
Bye for now,
Waving to all of you..
Cheers,
Carol
I think I will find a pretty garden pic for you..........this is an old one from Aug. 2003

Gillian. photo's please of the hoya (?) will have to research it as I'm not sure what it looks like..

be back in a sec.

Kyle and Noah are here for the day..need me, will come back shortly...

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Carol what a glorious garden! I love your arbors!

Gilli have a good day with all the kiddos.

Judy wonderful pics of your daughter, very talented girl! Where did you find the Raggedy Ann and Andy fabric? When I was little my room was R Ann and Andy. I still have everything and I have been collecting fabric as I see it in the fabric stores so when we have a little one the nursery will be R Ann and Andy. I need to get some of that print!

Going to load Turbo Tax on my computer and do the taxes, boring.

Have a good day all. Love and hugs, Rachel

P.S. Where is Sharon?

Glenview, IL

I am taking a short break...

Whew got the bar area and poolroom all cleaned and ready to go. Took all morning but now I can move on...

...By the way, forgot to say Happy Birthday to Suzanne...sounded like you had a wonderful Lunch though. Tell her I am humming happy birthday tooo you! We will be Celebrating my sis's 50th birthday too...Hahah, Don't think I will go to easy on her either, I just love pointing out the fact that she is sooo much older than I. I am such a brat.

Oh Carol...Your Arbor is so lovely! Thank you for brightening my day. Now was it made with the Cedar Branches as well. I just love when people make use of trees. I mean if they have to be taken down(tears) then what better way then to use them in the garden...Just a beautiful work of art! Congratulations to your Granddaughter! I am sure you are very proud of her and I am so glad you tell her so. Her chosen field of Nursing is Aswom, and from what I understand they can work absolutley everywhere...Funny rabbit tale!

Ves, I can't seem to grow hollyhock either. But then, I may have pulled them thinking they were weeds. Thats my biggest problem, Toss seeds and then pull em thinking they are weeds...Of course i guess i shouldn't weed in the dark either! Hahah, some gardener. just got to laugh. But anyhow, maybe if you plant them in a container then transplant them they might take...I hear they are suppose to be very vigerous. And they are Stunning, so will cross my fingers for you.

Rachel, How sweet! I love the R A&A. Never really thought about it until my twins were born. Wanted to get them a pair but oh my gosh they are sooo expensive. So I found the fabric at JoAnn's. Do you have that store there? If not let me know how much and i will go and get you what you need. Oh this fabric is also flannel.

Gilli, my and i thought I was busy! How fun a Sleep over for Sonora, yep you will need to have a rest before that...Giggling in advance at the thought of all the little girls chattering all at one time. You are a brave one... Thank you for explaing curling, sounds like a lot of fun.
...Now you make sure to get in some quiet time too.

Tropi...I hope you find the perfect kitten.

Betty, glad to hear GSons are over. Hope you are having lots of with them...I am glad you got the whole day off today too. Hmmm, might just take you up on the embroidery....I am looking forward to see what you have done with the jeans. If it is anything like your Sweatshirt jackets...Then i am already impressed.

Hi, Liz...What are you working on these days? I know that couch didn't gobble you up...I am anxious to hear what work of art you are creating...Cement Snowman?? Which reminds me, What size are planning?

Waving hello Shar, Cat, Ruby and Gita...Hope you are all well and keeping a fun busy.

Smiling here, Thank you all for your nice comments about my kids.
Ok...I better get at that craft table, It is a disaster!

Glenview, IL

Oh, Waving hi to Laura and GG too,

GG...Big bummer on having to re-make your squares. Will you be able to use the smaller one for something else...A mini quilt perhaps?

...shux, that craft table is glaring at me now so I am off again.

Hi Rach, I'm here, just trying to finish this monstrosity of a painting so I can get it out of my studio. It is so big I can't do anything else while sections of it are drying.

Hi to all.....I am keeping up with you, just painting as I go....and trying to stay warm. No snow...just chilly.

I am loving all your garden pictures...and any other photos that you send. I found that my little jonquils are peeping up, also the crocus...so things are looking up here! Only a couple splotches of green and my mood is much better.
Stay warm!

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Glad to hear from you Sharon. Sending you hugs, Rach

Please post pics of your monstrocity when it's done!

Liz, I need show and tell on the windchimes...do you put out the sand bag barriers every time you are getting rain??? must take a lot of effort...

Jeannine..could you not have put an extra border around to make up the difference in size..sounds like an awful lot of work and more problems if you cannot match the fabric..it will turn out though..might even like it better!!happens some times...lol..

Gita, got your seeds..going to sit and open the envelop this evening to see what treasures I've gotten..

Judy, not a problem..ship it and I'll embroider it...

Well, better go dry myself off! Soaken wet..moved my car into the very back entrance way to give the plowman the opportunity of really doing a plowjob..let's hope I don't slip and slide and not get it out in the morning...
So before I end up in pneumonia, it's off the change...

Glenview, IL

Hahha, Rachel I hear you. When I went to JoAnns it was for embroidery floss! Went to get the material i was working on to match colors and found the duck Material!...On way to get it cut Rag A&A called out Twins....LOL going with just enough money doesn't help cuz then I just pull out the plastic! No hope No will power to just get what I need.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

well, I'm not cool like you guys always doing something crafty...but...gasp...I started a project and actually completed the rough sketch (hey, completion does not come with my attention span)

I'm proud of it, but I know I can't post it. Just had to say thanks to y'all for inspiring me to materialize something

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

No fair, Tropi.....

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Pfffffft.....well, now my drink is all over the computer screen...in the keyboard....gee thanks, Trop!

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

whoa, yeah , that probably didn't come out right..it's not that bad, just a figure, but don't think it would be ok

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Trop what is a AUP warning?

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

I know what you mean, Tropi. You are probably right.

Rach...a warning you would get if you ever used profanity on DG or any other thing that could be offensive to others.
