Best/Worse/What did I learn today? Pt.30 Visit with Friends

I really do not know what grows well in your area. Seems like everything grows in CA!

If you want something perennial, how about some perennial Hibiscus? I have seeds for a red and a white/pink one. Want any? One thing--these do not bloom except on the 3rd yaer, but they grow 5' tall.

If you want some bushy annuals that bloom well, how about some Daturas? I have seeds for a double purple/white one and a double yellow one.
How about a nice Brugmansia? It would also be an annual--or can you keep them in the ground all year? I do not know, but it seems that a lot of people from CA always talk about them living outdoors for years and years and growing into trees. Is it "forever Summer" where you live or do you have seasons?

I am sure that between all the people on DG, you will find something suitable..

If you are offering seeds I'd love them. I live in the high desert, it is hot and dry in the summer and freezing in the winter nights, it drops into the 20's, last year in the single digits though it broke records.

I have pure caleche clay soil not a lot of water but that year I lost the Cannas, we flooded in that area and the clay just molded out and rotted my bulbs. I assumed they didn't like wet feet. I should check out other varieties though. I get a lot of water in this spot that does not drain much in this area but I could correct it.

Plants that grow in other areas do not do well here in the high desert. We can get snow now and again.

I like the ideas though.

Any of you have any daylily seeds to spare? trade?

You are all so knowledgeable about plants, makes me envious...I just like 'FLOWERS' but guess that comes with years of growing and interest..going to put names to mine this year...want this snow gone so I can play outside...

Hi Gals - Hi to everyone - Well, took a look at the chair seat and have decided that I need to purchase a new piece of foam. I will go to local upholstery shop tomorrow and see if he has a piece that I can buy. So, I won't be working on that today.

I spent some time getting my secret pal stuff together yesterday. This is going to be fun, I agree. I had to laugh while going through my stash of gifts when I saw a lot of price tags from Joanne's. I know that several of you are addicted to the store, same as myself.

So, not much going on yet, so not much to report. I will check back later on. I hope that everyone will have a good day though.

Berry,you and I cross posted, but I am glad. You mentioned Scrappy and I did want to also tell Rachel that he is a cutie. Yea, the hubby too. ha-ha Scrappy reminds me a bit of our princess who died a few years at age 14. Her hair was curlier though. Her name was Pippa and she sure was a sweetie.

Now I know what time the morning paper gets here, 5:30 a.m. I have not slept this night, though I did try for a couple of hours. Not sure what has me so wound up.
So I got up and painted, and now that it is getting daylight, think I will just sip some coffee and pretend I slept all night.

Some of you think that I made those snowmen!!! NO!!!! We have not had enough snow--only one so far. That came to me long ago in a forward from someone. I had so many things saved in my old "inbox", but lost it all when my SonIL cleaned out all my computer. I wrote you all about that--a while ago. This one got saved b/c I put it in my Documents.

Ruby, Joannes sells foam.....all kinds of foam....How far is this place from your house? I have a Michaels and an A.C. Moore within a couple of miles from my house. Joannes is about 5 miles away.

Dawn--You can look at my trade list of "haves". I am afraid that the plants I mentioned will not grow in the environment you described. Someone on DG from your area might suggest something that will. Isn't there a Southwestern Gardening Forum? If you have woes, might as well commiserate with DG'ers that have the same woes....

Nothing exciting to write you all about.....getting ready to paint my bathroom. Paint I got is a bit too dark. Have to go back to HD and have the man lighten it a bit. I have a few hours of working tomorrow AM. Someone called out.

Sounds as though we've all got project and busy lives today..cleaning woodworking shop when taking a break from stained glass..ended up putting up the 2 pictures behind couch in rec.room..a change..then that creates decorating with colors to match so am on a mission..lol...

only 10 minutes of ironing left so off I go..

I've been cathcing up on e-mails from friends and to friends and family...
The sun has come out and it is glistening on the snow.
Thinking about Gillibean and family having a fun day at the weiner roast outside in the snow.....I guess when you live that far north you get used to being outside and enjoying it.

Betty..lovely set of paintings you have..yes different from your country taste but really interesting ..and gorgeous colours. Did all the artists paint the same paintings?
Did your Friend arrive?...or do you think the call that was a hang up was him?

Rachie..yes that is a commercial apple orchard and Blueberry farm across from me..a family run business...
I go pick blueberries each summer with my two youngest grandaughters. Those trees are only a few years old..they removed a few rows of old ones and planted these..I think they are Honeycrisp..
I'll see if I can find a pic of my view in the summer..

Harvey did call this morning and apologized for not coming..got a run out and wasn't able to make it..thank goodness...lol...

I've search hi and low then low and hi to find the foil I use for my stained glass..have it cut, ready to foil and can't find it..who knows where it is..could telephone Gail and ask if I could visit the studio and get some know she wouldn't mind, but it is Sunday and not a day to bother people so I'll just hope eventually I'll find my materials...so on the lookout for something else..

As for the paintings..the brightness is done all over the watercolor paper with texture then each design their own..doesn't look half bad behind the couch...if nothing else a change...

I'm happy to say I sat and cleaned my junk drawer..do any of you have one in your kitchen or is it just me...not junky anymore...3/4 went to garbage..I'll have to make a point in going through bedroom drawers next weekend and throw out the things I've not worn in an eternity..did find a 'diet' book..should take time to read it..might do after supper, will try to cook a steak so don't want to find out I shouldn't be..

I just finished watching the DVD Little Miss Sunshine. I enjoyed it..had heard so many good things about it.
I borrowed it from the library. I won't be watching the Superbowl...I'm not a football fan.

Rachie..can't seem to find any pics of the orchard in the summertime..I did discover that I ahve over 10,000 photo files on this computer though..OMG! I really must go through them and eliminate ones that are not so good..and doubles in different sizes.
I do have a pic of the scene out the window towards the left of the young trees though..sunrise..Jan. 2006

well i guess all the comotion will be on shortly got pleanty of beer, chips and dip and salsa lol not doing anything special dh has his daughter viviting so that is nice, i let her go visit the inlaws lol so i just went to the thrift stores nice change.

betty, i love the colors, where are you going to hang it?
oh we found a large purple bottle at the thrift store and it happens to be sil favorite color so we got a hole drilled in it and stuffed from the top to see if we like multi or white but were still not sure i think i want to try purple lights then decide but its really done with wine or water bottles

rachel, scrappy is just a doll so cute dh to lol you have the rain to its so gloomy dont want to do anything so i guessi'll watch the game not a fan of sports

Hi everyone! Had a busy weekend. Made myself sew!!! And guess what? I finished my quilt top. Now I have 6 things to get quilted!!! Girls night out last night. Ate dinner and saw 27 Dresses. Very cute movie! Then we went to a new restuarant/bar by the mall. It had good music and it was fun watching people do the dating thing. I am SO glad I am married!!!! Smelled like smoke when I got home so I had to fumigate myself before hitting the bed!

Heading over to neighbors tonight for Super Bowl. I'm making the little hot dogs in the blankets and potato skins.

Won't be watching the game...DH already comfy in our room way on the other side of the house.

...So there was this guy Charlie, he is our mechanic, had on the greatest hat that everyone wanted...and the birthday girl won the hat!

Jenga is THE Bahamama game...LOL I still reign Jenga queen, never drop the tower, but here are some friends who enjoying the climb.

The old grandpa that lived in our house...I think his name is Raffiel Something...A Russian artist
When we came to look at the house we were shown the basement and they still had all of his paintings, must have been 100 or so, in his storage room. We asked if we may browse through his work...The painting is his only Native American theme as well as abstract art! We fell in love with it immediatley. Also the 3 Eagles over the fireplace in sunroom. The sunroom was his Studio...Now my computer room...
anyway When we decided to buy the house we asked if we could buy the two paintings as well. We got the pieces dirt cheap only paid 300 for both and he signed the backs of each piece.

Cards are played...This little girl ( isn't she adorable) was playing cards and Jenga at the same time!

I got lots of Birthday hugs...This is Sherri, she is the mom of Twin boys, One of twins was "dating" my girl in 8th. They brok up after the summer but the parents still remain friends.

Of course Our cousin Joycee comes every year. We camp all summer with her and her BF, they are just a riot!

Then every year we have what We call "virgins" First timers to the party...
Funny one of these gals are good friends with our Cousin Julie...She actually lives around the corner from us! Julia and DH were passing her house as she was out with her dog, our cousin says hey come along to the party...so we met a new friend and neighbor, she is hysterical telling stories.

Good conversations go on in all different parts of the house.

Soo...they got me to sit down and play a hand...

Kyle just dropped in while Greg was at the store...told me they were out snowmobiling and DS decided to break new trail and guess did some major damage to new snowmachine..rats...

Then Greg came in to get Kyle and was telling me that Trevor (who had the snowmobile machine accident) last month who is still in an induced coma) his dad had a major heart attack yesterday...in the hospital ..not sure how extensive..boy that family sure needs prayers....

Betty there is a whole thread devoted to lasagna gardening, periodically. It is a bed you can make out of a spot over an old broken patio or weedy or rocky area or just over clay. It is an above the ground compost pile, you use your garden soil mixed with straw, a lot of straw and newpapers, veggie scraps, coffee etc. but you can break down cardboard boxes you have stored and old phone books etc. add some sodium nitrate and keep layering and layering until one day you have healthy soil. Instant garden. It is a nice raised bed. I have bad soil.

dawn, glad to get them off my hands lol i like them but they just go crazy just like the pic below the plant in the pond far in the back the pointed one i believe it is horse tails good greif i had them in a area and they started popping up through the lawn so had to rip them up and put in in the fish pond looks like there going crazy in there to how about some cactus? oh boy im going to go to agriculture jail lol

Darlene just called and wanted to know how long it was since I've seen Missy..yesterday I put some knitting machine books away while cleaning in the laundry room cupboards..well, guess she got in there and has been resting quietly since then..thank goodness they found here..you never know where they crawl into..especially her..she's always one quick step away from me all day long..will have to be more careful...

Think Greg said it would cost a few thousands to do the repair..at least he didn't do anything to himself.thank goodness...

Lets see i guess I can probably get some items put away...been putting it off, just cuz Don't feel like lugging boxes around...wah,wah,wah...seems my box fairies are no where around, plus I am tired of looking at the mess!...

Hi All,

Yes, this is the quilt top I goofed up on. When I was done all of the star squares, I started "squaring" them off and I ended up making 7 of them too small. I had to remake these and use a different cream fabric but it all blended in fine. The hardest (nad most boring) part of this was making the stars. Once I had them done and started putting it together, it was easy. I put the stars and the outer border on yesterday. I did have to fanagle the squares a bit. When I lined them up along the side of the quilt, they ran over the edge. So I cheated and sewed a few of the seams a little more to take up the gap! Whatever it takes!!


Liz, no our house is not huge. I actually don't have much wall space to hang my stuff. This quilt will probably go on the guest bed once it's quilted. That's one of the problems quilters run into. We sew and sew and sew and then what do we do with the stuff!!!

Well, I've got a busy day today. parent teacher conference this afternoon for DS; then school tonight w/ a quiz. Tomorrow morning I'm going to have one of those heart scans and vascular ultrasounds. Nothings wrong that I know of but the cost is a small price to pay for peace of mind. I'll let y'all know how it goes.
