CLOSED: Second Chance Wishlist Swap

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

frausnow, I don't think anyone has asked for these if they have that's alright just thinking of what Suzy said about the june bugs lol

25 of Yellow 4 o'Clocks - Mirabilis Jalapa Annual. Zones 7 -11. Surface sow by just pushing the seeds into the ground and keep soil moist but not soaking wet. Suppose to be planted in sun, but mine grew in mostly shaded area at the corner of my garage. Seeds are a breeze to collect from their little cups. This is a very prolific reseeder so only plant where you want it.

It's your turn to go crazy now, fun isn't it lol

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Here is a photo of the mystery pink flower that I think may be a zinnia. The photo is not too clear, but it is all I have.

LeBug -- it's the Japanese Beetles that the Mirabilis Jalapa attracts and kills.

as i mentioned above... i have magenta and a coupla yellows.

and heavens... i do have a lot of stuff on my "soon to get done" mental list ... but as i hate going out in weekends due to traffic... but with the warmer temps.... i really should.

and Charlene -- got ya down for magenta.

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Oh my gosh, ..after reading just part of this, I feel like someone put my head in a blender. lol : ) Carry on. : ) ~Lucy

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I've got both of those pesty beatles! lol I'll take the 'coupla yellows' I have a few others, thanks for the offer I don't need a whole lot anyway.

We're having warmer temps. that I have been looking forward to all week and it's raining too much for me to get outside and get anything done, just as well cause this swap is keeping me busy :)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

You missed out Lucy, missed you :) I think all of our heads are swimming right about now!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Naw, I've got it all memorized.

Suzy

toronto, Canada

Frausnow - I would love some coriander and thyme if not already spoken for. Thanks KD

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Suzy DOES have it all memorized - I just got back from her house. She may THINK she's not organized, but she's kiddin' herself!

Ana, could you please add the Japanese Lilac Tree to my bundle? Those are fabulous trees!

Frausnow, do you have any more Beautyberry seeds?

Robin

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Mirabilis Jalapa kills Japanese beetles? Well, we should make it a federal law that one has to be planted in every yard!

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Except the problem with those is that once you plant one - you end up with a yard full, they reseed prolifically and they have absolutely massive roots.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

So these are the Japanese Beetles of flowers?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Seandor, so right!!! LOL! And the people on the west coast are saying, what? What's a japanese beetle? I am attaching a photo of them on a dahlia, Alfred Grille, so you can see for yourselves.

I have seen lots of posts where people talk about the dead JB at the foot of their Four O'Clocks. They take a bite and croak. However, I can tell you I have never seen a dead JB near mine. Dave swears by them, so that's enough to make me keep them growing here, but I haven't had the same teriffic results as other people. (They do eat my Four OClocks, tho, so maybe they croak somewhere else?)

OMG - if I had JBs that bad, I would seriously think about taking up chemical warfare. . . egads! (I know the use of chemicals is politically incorrect - but OMG!)

Four O'Clock Pimp Time:
In Defense of Four O'Clocks

They might not be hardy and die over the winter and never retun, so those massive roots just rot and hep your soil. :)) They only return in mild winters, and winters where they don't rot. The roots aren't any bigger than dahlias'. If you don't like them where they re seed, either pull the seedlings or dig them up. They don't spring up from a little chunk of root or spread that way at all. They are lovely! Fragrant! The hummers like them.

One of the biggest selling points: They open up in the afternoon, so if you work a day job they are always open, unlike the moss roses and african daisy/gazanias and morning glories that are always closed when you get home or when you're in your garden.

Four O'clocks are also bushy plants...mounding? They are a totally different shape than stems that come up from a basal rosette and give some weight to your flower bed that it might be lacking. They can probably take full hot burning sun, but they bloom very well in part shade. Who doesn't need some white, pale pink and yellow blooming plants in their shade gardens?

I love them and have always been happy where they decide to pop up, and am happy to see them if they return, and if they don't then there is always seed. They are quick and fast from seed, and when you are watching for germination, you'll see the seed turns to clear jelly-like consistency right before germination. It's fascinating.

Also, if you have kids and grandkids, Four O'clock are one of the absolute best plants for them to start with because the seeds are big and for boys, very cool. They're shaped just like grenades! Preschools and kindergartens always want thekids to grow marigods in Dixie Cups, but Four Oclocks (and Nasturtiums, but they're too expensive) are way better choices.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Okay, the Mighty Illoquin has spoken! I'm convinced - Four O'clocks in the gardens :-)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

don't you love the ring to that? "Mighty Illoquin" sounds like a heroine in a great novel.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Seandor, Yeah, I know. I went all organic about 2 years ago. Every single day for a month in late June-July last summer, right at 5:00 when my garden cooled down, I went out with a can of soapy water and hand picked them off. Nothing like a handful of little beetles clawing at your hand to make a chill run up your spine! Ugh!

Last year, too late, I got some traps. This year I'll put them out sooner because they worked. They also said (last year) that it was the worst infestation in 50 years....something like that.

The thing is, all my other pests are being biologically controlled by natural bugs & wildlife and I hate to mess it up just for a couple of lousy dahlias and roses. I'm not certain what I'll do next year.

Does anyone have Dutchmen's pipes? It's a kind of vine with large heart-shaped leaves.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Suzy, I sprayed alcohol on the darn beatles with a spray bottle while they were away from the flower on the leaves took a bit but it did kill them probably just as well picking them off though it took a while to get them on the leaves lol But the alcohol worked really good on the blister beatles knocked them deader than a door nail really fast! Didn't spray it on any of the flowers though because of the butterflies but those blister beatles reall give me the creeps too!!!

Well, where the heck were you this summer? LOL! I wish I had known that!!! No alcohol on flowers. I can remember that! Does it evaporate from the spray bottle? Do you add any water or anything to dilute it? Any plants I need to avoid in terms of it burning leaves or anything?

Thanks for the tip! It's a good one!

Suzy

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Sendor... I have a few seeds of the ducthman's pipe, but not sure of germination on them if you'd like to give them a try.

Charlene.. would like some of the yellow can eat manihot hibiscus please if ya have enough. Do you have a want list up yet?

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Our Illustrious Illoquin is right on those Four O'Clocks - I'm remembering them from when I grew them in Southern Cal as a kid. (Well, duh Robin - of COURSE it freezes here - LOL!)

Suzy, be careful with those JB traps. Wait to see how this year's infestation goes - if it's not bad putting that trap up can actually draw them to your yard (it uses pheromones). (Of course, if there's someone you don't care for who lives about a half mile or so away, you could always give THEM some of those traps!!)

ansonfan

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I just used straight alcohol and it doesn't evaporate but I go thru it like crazy in the summer so it's hard to tell, I didn't notice any leaf burn but if you want to try other plants with it you should check first on a leaf, I also spray mealy bugs when they fly thru the air, gotta have some fun lol I guess that's what they were lol It didn't hurt the butterfly weeds on the milkweed bugs, mardi gras, red cloak, hibiscus think that's all I really used it on. Try it on any pest, I used it on a couple of others but can't remember right now which they were, alcohol must be some mean stuff! I'm just sick of all of these beatles and blister beatles and milkweed beatles lol I don't use any other sprays either and have quite a few benificial bugs in my gardens but some just get out of hand on the pests and we just can't help but spray something!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm sorry, when I read the first entry on alcohol and bugs, I thought LeBug was getting them drunk!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Sure, Ansonfan, I'll pull them and let you know if I have any trouble finding anything.

Suzy

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Yes it get's them DEAD DRUNK lol They do teeter a little lol

Polkton, NC(Zone 7b)

rachierabbit
may I have heliopsis and sweet pea please - thanks :-)

I have a large garden dedicated to both medicinal and culinary herbs
I like cottage type flowers for the beds out front
I have one bed on the side that is just really gaudy colors gone wild
I really like my backyard to be a jungle with lots of vines and perennials that are not too fussy, and annuals for borders
I don't have too many containers yet, but I do like growing some container plants around the porches. Last year I used Nemesia and some MGs and petunias w/ coleus and Aubrietia Purple Cascade in hanging baskets with dichondra as a fill in.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Excellent and informative list!!!

Everybody, scan your lists, please, and help Ansonfan out by presenting him with some cool choices from your lists. He is our only swap virgin and has the only Y chromosome in the group; it's amazing to me he hasn't been scared off by the piggy herd! LOL! If we scared off Blueglancer, you know it must look bad from the outisde!

I'm sure it would be helpful to start your offers to him by saying "Ansonfan" so he can just scroll through looking for his name.

Thanks!

Suzy
