I would love this off your list

Updated 1/05/08 2:25 pm

May I ask everyone who wants something on my list to d-mail me? I can't keep up with the posts. Will back later this evening and mark packets on a first-come-first-served basis.

Hope someone finds something they like - here's part of my list -
T = trade (information given is limited to what came with the packet)
G = my garden

Alcea (Hollyhock) pink T

Adenanthera pavonina (Curly Pods; Red Sandalwood) z10b-11 http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/51496/ T

Aquilegia (Columbine) mixed varieties which may include magenta, lavender, yellow & Black Barlow T

Calendula (Pot Marigold) T

Celosia argentea var spicata 'Pink Flamingo Feather' - self-sows T

Centaurea cyanus (Cornflower) blues, pinks; 24-30"; annual; full sun T

Chasmanthium latifolium (Indian Woodoats) perennial grass 2-3'. I have seen this growing with yellow daisies of a rudbeckia and thought it very beautiful and can imagine the blur of wings in winterpod over its seed pods. But, it self-sows too much for me. T

Chelidonium majus var Asiaticum - not sure how similar/different this Asian variety is to the local Greater Celandine http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/496/ . Makes a pretty yellow woodland poppy, and has medicinal uses, but keep in mind that this self-sows easily. However - I don't see it growing where deer can get to it. T

Clematis tangutica 'Radar Love' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/72987/ (2 trades) T

Cleome hasslerana (Spider Flower) - sun/part shade; 3-4'; white & pink mix; drought tolerant; self-sows; clock plant - opens end of day - hummers and butterflies and moths - nice in a drift around and up to the trunk of a standardized Rose of Sharon bush in white/pink/rose G

Commelina tuberosa http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/122422/ T

Coreopsis verticillata 'Zagreb' - This one is not tolerant of less than full sun, nor does it appreciate a high clay content in its fundament. T

Datura inoxia T

Datura - white (2 trades) T

Datura - white w/purple T

Datura - purple T

Digitalis purpurea (Foxglove) - When our garden was dependent on zilch water from a well, this was one of the few things I could grow under a monster pawlounia in dark, dry, rooty shade. Some very nice strangers came by one day and asked if they could have the pawlounia and in years of more sun after that these foxgloves have hopped about reaching about 6' in June with bells from cream through shades of pink to dark rose-purple. They are allowed to occupy random spots just inside paths, but not the beds themselves - original volunteer seedlings handed to me by neighbor Hazel Jestice back in the '70s. (2 trades) G

Digitalis purpurea T

Gaillardia 'Sundance' - bicolor T

Gypsophila 'Convent White' (Baby's Breath) You know what's a good substitute for this sun lover in shade? Kalimeris (Mongolian Aster) which blooms from late summer to frost for me as opposed to going toes up by August as the gypsophila used to do when we had more sun. T

Hemerocallis (Daylily) The pod parent (a seedling) of this one might not be considered very remarkable. The flowers are medium-small, coral-orange, with petals recurving like the Turks Cap lily. The plant itself is low. But! This daylily grows in shade where others will not and spreads and produces tons of branches and flowers. Pollen parents were Victorian Star and Dinner Plate. (1 trade left) G

Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon) T

Hosta - green & blue mix T

Hyssopus officinalis T

Impatiens wallerana - 12 - 18"; mostly white with a few showing wide variety of other colors; self-sows; flowering starts late, but that gives the black-leaved heuchera it eventually trounces a head start. (2 trades) G

Iris pseudocorus (Yellow Water Iris) If you have a water garden in the shade, this is the aquatic for you. It'll grow in ordinary garden dirt, too. Bloomed generously for us while we put up with it, but eventually we fed this one to the compost pile. Still, if you are a flower hound faced with conditions negative to flowering, this would be a good one. T

Iris sibirica T

Leucojum aestivum (Summer Snowflake) Imagine a giant, 1 1/2 ' snowdrop in May, with white, bell-like flowers with a green spot on each petal, nodding in clusters from stem tips. Dies back in summer. Likes continually moist conditions. A few pods were collected from a plant near a river under trees along a path.

Liatris (Blazing Stars) - my guess is that this is probably the purple one. There were a few Augusts along a utility break where the meadow blazed with purple and gold drifts from this flower and golden rod. Don't know why the liatris disappeared - bad timing with mowing? (2 trades) T

Lunaria annua (Honesty; Dollar Plant) - purple, 3', April, sun/part shade, biennial, Fragrant. Nothing bothers this plant. Like the foxgloves, it hops about by itself, and is allowed to come up through variegated vinca along a yew hedge on the edge of the path. (Do not plant yew if there are any deer in your vicinity. There were no deer here when we planted the yew, but now I wish we had planted a double, staggered row of some other type of fastigiate (narrow & upright - what you need for a narrow, 3' x 50' strip where an evergreen background/privacy screen would be wanted), deer-resistant evergreen like Ilex 'Sky Pencil' or Buxus 'Graham Blandy'.) G

Mirabilis jalapa (4 O'Clock) yellow T

Molucella laevis (Bells of Ireland) - dried arrangements; naturalizes in meadows T

through ecstatic attentions of kitties. Collected along railroad tracks.

Nicandra (Shoofly Plant) blue T

Nigella damascena T

Papaver sp. (various types) all red T

Physostegia virginiana 'Pink Bouquet' (Obedient Plant) T

Platycodon grandiflorus (Balloon Flower) gets to 6' in my garden - If I cut it back before it flowers in late May, it will only rise to 2 or 3' and not flop so much. This also delays the flowering, which I appreciate - so many summer flowers are done by August. T

Stachystarpheta jamaicensis (Porterweed) purple T

Thalia dealbata - an elegant aquatic plant for a large water garden (2 large seeds) T

Unknown shrub with white berries - I couldn't get an ID from Theresa on this one from her Unusual Seed Swap #2. Perhaps it's Callicarpa dichotoma http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/69461/ ? T

Verbena bonariensis - This is a "scrim" (see-through) plant. Flowers in part shade, but is also a flopper. So, choose your flopp-ees, or grow it in full sun. (2 trades) T

PROMISES TO:

ANA3
Datura 'Belle Blanche' T
Datura 'Le Fleur' T

FAIRY1004
Clematis tangutica (Russian Virgin Bower) T
Panicum virgatum 'Rotstrahlbusch' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/51721/ T
Sisyringium striatum T
Ipomoea purpurea 'Purple Feathers'
Oriental lily

FRAUSNOW
Honey Locust - T For a few years, we escaped local vandals by gardening on a friend's property where locusts blooming in May pervaded the entire area with an unforgettable perfume. Well, now the vandals have reformed, and the hogs that used to enjoy their run under the locusts, along with mulberry and oak, are things of the past. T

Spirea japonica - to 6', pink, spreading mound. Deer resistant. Collected from bush growing at edge of trail through a loblolly pine wood.

GRAMPAPA
Antirrhinum (Snapdragon) 2', mix T
Pennisetum macrourum T

ILLOQUIN
Elschscholtzia californica (California Poppy) red T
A surprise lol

KD2000
Buddleia davidii var nanhoensis 'Nanho Alba' - Mine has gotten up to 5' tall, but its lower leaves are pruned back to a 3 1/2' trunk before being allowed to bush out at the top - nice to do in a small garden with flowers swirling up to the base beneath the top "lollipop". G

Kiss-Me-Over-the-Garden-Gate T

PAMSUE
Aquilegia vulgaris var Stellata (Columbine) black-maroon, double, 3' G - some springs when the rodents are not so busy, black tulips have bloomed nearby and the color echo has been fun under an erstwhile small purple-leaved plum (Prunus cistena spelling?) with sheets of blue Siberian forgetmenots (Anchusa myosotidiflora - cannot find current name - biennial in dry shade & invasive) G

Nepeta cataria (THE catnip) - sun/part shade; usually 1 1/2' - 3', but once bushed out to 5' x 5' when it volunteered in a brush pile where cats could not get to it. I really regret not bringing home an abandoned bird cage once, because that would have been much more decorative for getting the catnip

Clematis ternifolia (Autumn Clematis) This is a huge monster that peskily self-sows, and if I could only have one clematis, this would be it. I love the perfumed clouds of tiny flowers in late summer making waterfalls over the hedge - not for everyone, I know. Be sure to cut it to the ground right after frost to give any supporting plant a breathing spell over winter before allowing this vine to rampage again in the spring. Actually, this vine can be hacked back to the ground as late as mid-summer solstice and still produce those flowers later on.

Viola - yellow, 6-8" T

RACHIERABBIT
Impatiens wallerana - 12 - 18"; mostly white with a few showing wide variety of other colors; self-sows; flowering starts late, but that gives the black-leaved heuchera it eventually trounces a head start. G

Ornamental Pumpkin 'Little be Jack' T

SEANDOR
Aquilegia vulgaris 'Tower Dark Blue' 18-24" T

Clematis 'Henryi'
Clematis 'Nelly Moser'

Cosmos sulphureus (Klondike Cosmos) - sun/part shade; 2-3'; drought tolerant; double orange - This was a surprise to me last summer, because those pink/white/rose Cosmos bipinnatus types will not flower for me in partial shade, but this one did in a tad more shade - who would have thought? Loved the orange last summer near the gold cicada leaves of Ipomoea nil 'Keiryu' and moody black-toned red dissected leaves of Acer 'Crimson Queen'. Sedum 'Madronna' chimed in with sulky maroon stems and faun-pink seedpods later in the season. Suzy is so right about orange. These annual flowers flower fine from being wintersown. G

Cosmos bipinnatus 'Summer Dreams' - really wanted to grow this one, but was not to be. T
Nicotiana 'Lipstick Colors' T
Verbena hastata (Blue Vervain) T
Veronica 'Red Fox' - 12-18"; perennial; sun/partial shade; late June T
Veronica 'Sunny Border Blue' - known for its especially long blooming period T

TCS1377
Cosmos sulphureus (Klondike Cosmos) - red T

wish list -
Salvia coccinea - white

Winterville, GA(Zone 8a)

Illoquin,
From my own garden, I will be sending 100 seeds packs of the following:

25 of Brazilian Bachelor Buttons - Centratherum intermedium. Annual. Sow 1/16" in full sun. Hardy to zone 8-11, but grows here in zone 7. Has a purplish blue flower and smells like cigar tobacco to me. Grows 18-24" and space 18-24" apart.

25 of Gomphrena haageana 'Strawberry Fields' Annual. Sow 1/8" in full sun. Grows to 12-18", Zones?, but grows in zone 7. Space 9-12". Strawberry shaped flower great for dried floral arrangements. Best planted in clumps for best show otherwise they appear straggley.

25 of Yellow 4 o'Clocks - Mirabilis Jalapa Annual. Zones 7 -11. Surface sow by just pushing the seeds into the ground and keep soil moist but not soaking wet. Suppose to be planted in sun, but mine grew in mostly shaded area at the corner of my garage. Seeds are a breeze to collect from their little cups. This is a very prolific reseeder so only plant where you want it.

25 of Blanket Flower - Gaillardia 'Fanfare' Perennial. This is a cross with Grandiflora so seeds may not come true to original plant. Once the plants start to bloom, you can weed out any that you don't like. Zones 3-10. Surface sow in full sun after last frost or wintersow. Supposedly grows 18-24", but mine only grew to about 14".

On the American Persimmon Dispyros virginiana, The color of the fruit was an amber color, but I can only guess on the height of the tree, maybe 20' - 25' if not a bit taller. I'm not a good gauger of height.

Suzy & Fairy - I think I misread Fairy's trade list and thought I saw "seeds" where it actually said "bulb". Don't know if Fairy has digested my Magoo Moment yet - but we won't be adding bulbs to envies for this swap. I think we arrived at an agreement that improved our trade, though.

Thanks for a very exciting morning, all.

>>Now I need to update my list after this hurricane ! lol I'm going to post what I have for everybody too a little later.

Me too!!

I think I have most of it down on paper.... I've verified a few thru DMail, and will update my list above if i have not run out of edits for the day.

but -- i think I'm almost DONE. But i know I still need to go thru bluesprials list.... but i have to get something done today aside from seed swapping...

One thing I have found helpful in looking for "swaps" i may have missed is.... use the "search" [EDIT | Find on this page ]

I will be making a list of my seeds for trade as soon as I get some in from the wintersown trade. I am new to seed collecting and trading and only have a few until then. The ones that I have a lot of trades from my own collecting are Lemon Slice Manihot (edible hibiscus okra), Pink Hardy Hibiscus, and lots of two that I don't know the name of as described below.

White lily that looks like an Easter lily, but blooms in Aug/Sept and smells so wonderful you will not want to have the fragrance end. I got this from the roadside in Woodville, TX. They have bloomed there for years, but this year the road was being widened and they were being dozed. I snatched three and they all gave seeds for my troubles.

The second unknown is what I believe is a Zinnia with single petals that are dark pink with a ray of gold bracts? on top of the cone in a circle. The cones are huge and tall and were loaded with seeds that look like zinnia seeds.

Let me know if anyone wants any of these four as that is all I have several trades of for now.

I will have more soon.

Charlene
