do you grow rosemary? i make rosemary walnuts for all occasions - i almost hate to give the recipe because it is SO EASY (and also a bit vague - i'm like that...). but let me know if you want it...
No Amy,
I didn't grow rosemary this year, but love it. Rosemary walnuts sound interesting, never thought of pairing the 2, I'd like to try it.
Amy - please give us that rosemary recipe.
Deb - I'd suggest doing lots of raw veggies with some of those good yogurt-based dips. Everyone I talk to is sick of fattening foods and looking for something healthy but tasty. I know there's a really good veggie dip made of yogurt, hot sauce (I use Tiger Sauce) lemon juice and whatever dried or fresh herbs you have on hand. I don't have it here with me, but you can also add finely chopped onions and nuts. It tastes a lot better than it sounds...you can just be imaginative and throw in whatever you want....LOL
Hope you enjoy your gathering! Happy New Year!
That's kind of my plan Louise, easy, make ahead, then relax. Thanks for the idea. I'm making one dip with cream cheese and carrots, cucumbers and onions, and one with hummus and fresh tomatoes. Although, right now, I may have the ingredients mixed up. We just finished cocktails and dinner, so I'm a little off..
There are so many recipes on line, I just saved about 6 to my fav's. I kept going back and forth if I wanted to do this, and just decided today, so it is a little last minute. Sometimes those are the best get togethers.
Sounds terrific to me!! Hope you enjoy it as much as your guests will! Isn't it great to be able to go online and get any recipe you want? We have a tree loaded with great juicing oranges, and I decided I want to make orange jelly from some of the juice. I couldn't find a recipe I wanted in any of my cook books, so I went online and found several good recipes. The only thing I didn't realize is that you aren't supposed to use a water bath canner on a ceramic top stove. Now what?! I looked at the electric canners and they are soooooo expensive. I don't think I can justify that! Oh My......time to watch Antiques Road Show....LOL
Al, Did you show anything other than that the Packers win their lousy conference a lot? But they do have 3 Superbowls coming from the tiniest market in any sport. Aren't they owned by the fans too?
Giants have had 2 without going bacck very far.
i'll look the walnut recipe up in the book i got it from tomorrow (then i'll tell you how i make it...)
Why don't we all fast on New Year's Day?? No cooking, clean up and we might lose a few of those pounds we gained last week!!! Anybody game - I'm NOT - no will power and I love good food!! Eleanor
Dave -Thank goodness you didn't bring up the fact that our comference has Detroit and had Tampa Bay in it too for a long time.
Giants were tough with Parcell and Simms. I remember all the Jets stars - Curtis Martin and......? that's all I got.
How about a little known guy called Namath?!
Boozer. (Not Namath, Emerson)
Another great one. Hey - watch those Namath jabs! What about Gastineau and Joe Klecko too?
Namath just last week graduated from college. Sure took him long enough !
He'll get that kiss from Suzy Kolber yet!
She likes college graduates.

Growing up in the sixties also included brash young sports stars like Namath & Ali. They were bigger than life, assured their own victories over favored opponents. It was amazing. plus the Mick before we knew of his flaws.
We needed heros, it took the sting out of 'Nam. ☺
I wouldn't put Mantle in the class with Namath and Ali. Actually, no one compared with Ali! Welcome back, WC! We always look for heroes. Sports heroes have been popular for many years and will continue to be.
Shhh! - (Im incognito) hee hee!
I agree, Namath was image, Mantle was a classic baseball icon but Ali (more accurately 'C. Clay'), was the real deal. - they don't make them like that anymore...
Happy New Year! ☺
Wait a cotton picking minute, why do you say "more accurately Clay"? If he legally changed his name to Ali and wishes to be known as such, so be it. And I believe that's what happened. BUT please don't mistake me for a sports fan. xx, Carrie
As athletes in their sport, Namath would come in third. But what am impression he made!
Sports heroes don't get to be untarnished anymore. Partly due to their increased misbehavior but even more due to the modern press. Athletes were more mythical then.
Where is Al? Lombardi, Starr, Horning (Oops! I guess there was a scandal back then.)
Dave, I agree about the !@#$$$^%# modern press. Athletes, presidents, NOBODY can get away with anything anymore - and if you try, we'll wiretap your phone. I'm getting cynical again - better switch threads, quick. lol. x, C
I trying not to go back 85 years like Victor.
Horning's was nothing by today's standards.
You mean his transgression was nothing? Horning was "the golden boy"
Did Clay become Ali right after he beat Liston?
I'm not in this.
Bart Starr and Johnny Unitas are at the top of my favorites list. When times were so rough for my sister's kids I wrote to both sports stars (back in about 1963) and they sent big packages to my nephews who have never forgotten their generosity of spirit. I truly admired Vince Lombardi, too, and saw him and team in practice out in Green Bay.
You've got good taste pirl ! ☺
What did Horning do? Don't remember that. Yes, Dave - Ali announced his name change after winning the title. Athletes (and celebrities and politicians) are probably no worse today than years ago. It was just taboo to report it back then. Of course, they do have more ways to abuse themselves today.
Rosemary Walnuts: the recipe
2 cups shelled walnuts
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons dried whole rosemary
1.5 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon cayenne
Preheat oven to 350.
Place walnuts on a jelly roll pan.
Drizzle olive oil over walnuts, and sprinkle with rosemary, salt, and cayenne.
Toss lightly with your hands or a pair of spoons.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the nuts are toasted brown and you can smell the toasted walnut and rosemary.
My comments:
I use walnut halves, they look prettier - halves and pieces if it's all i can find.
WOW. That is a LOT of oil. I think i use about 2 tablespoons at the most. All it does is make the spices stick to the nuts.
I use less salt, but very coarse ground kosher or sea salt.
Use as much (or little) cayenne as you want. For me, i use a lot. For my folks, i use very little.
I have NEVER baked these for 30 minutes. My oven is totally screwed up, but i can't imagine them ever going that long. Set your timer for 10 or 15 minutes, and stay nearby. Check them a lot. They smell WONDERFUL when they are done. If they start to burn, they smell bad - and will taste AWFUL (but sometimes unburnt nuts can be salvaged.)
That's all. It is super easy - i don't usually give people the recipe...
Happy new year!
I think I knew her.
Sounds wonderful Amy, and thank you for sharing.
Horning was caught gambling. Not on football (I don't think) . I agree about the press coverage. Mantle had that great image becuse reporters never aired dirty laundry.
Steroids is the area that makes these days worse. Ty Cobb was probably more obnoxious as Michael Vick or Barry Bonds. But he had to play on his owm merits. Only adding whatever intimidation he could.
Thanks so much for sharing that recipe, Amy. I'm definitely going to try making those....they sound great and I have all the "stuff" on hand....what's not to like??
Always knew you had the right stuff Donnie!
Just wanted to pop in & thank you all for your humour and chuckles provided this past year.
As an official lurker, my vote is cast for your threads as being the most substantive & entertaining - especially if the day has gone exponentially downhill: guaranteed to put a smile on the grumpiest of faces!
A raised glass to toast you all & wishes for a very Happy 2008 from the PNW,
Katye
Only a couple months to go......
I think we should give Victor an award for starting the best threads and for his sense of humor. Same for dave47...Hope you guys continue to make us laugh in the new year. You'd better !
Katye...what are those orange flowers?
JD - Erysimum, or they were formerly known as Cheiranthus. I suppose the names are changed often enough to cause some of us to require liquid refreshments...
Wallflowers are the common name. This one intrigued me as it had both the Red-Orange blossom with the purple bud. I rather enjoyed the flowering all through the 2 years I had it. My Bees did too. But one day, it just keeled over. Spent. Went horizontal just like that.
You may be familiar with Erysimum 'Bowles Mauve' - same habit. Short- lived, but floriferous. And sweet smelling!
And I'll second that thinly veiled "You'd better!" Gentlemen: please oblige!
