Winter Sowing database

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Just my 2 cents worth-I think I read somewhere that if these people were ignored that they would go away and this would all settle down. I believe I may not be the only one that read that statement, and probably the one thing I read that I agree with....We are never going to get anywhere so long as all this continues, everyone bantering back and forth about one thing or another. I love the title Polar Planting, and some of the others that have been mentioned, but has anyone found where using "Winter Sowing" has a copy write and not able to be used anywhere else? Again, just my 2 cents worth here, but curious to know as well.

Ron..... I don't know about other folks, but I for one would appreciate it if you want to continue a discussion about your subject that you start a thread over in the parking lot forum. Pull into a parking space, make yourself compy. I belive that is the profer forum for general chat, but I could be wrong.

This thread was started for input to help enhance all walks of life type gardeners with a database. It has taken a few curves and turns, but some of us are trying to place input and ask questions and offer help for ourselves and others.

I have no desire to get into any kind of a conversion here other than this one with you concerning the rights and wrongs and whatever's. The only dirt I want to play in and have on my hands is that of my garden and those gardens I work in helping other folks. Thank you.

Not true

"Ron, if this is your attitude towards a fellow human being who has be mucked across the floor by Trudie, then you may want to reevaluate your life as you reap what you sow. No pun intended. How dare you have the attitude of arrogance when you only have one side of the story. That is when it becomes ignorance. Do you lock step too?"

I have followed this whole thing also and am heartily sick of it. I agree. Please take the "discussion" to the parking lot and let those of us who genuinely want to learn how to sow seeds in the winter, learn it without having to sift thu all the nonsense

Maybe it's time to start a new clean thread on this topic? And keep it on topic...

The term "winter sowing" hasn't and can't be copyrighted. I still prefer to use it rather that "polar sowing" because it's commonly used by gardeners around the world. Why should we use another term when most gardeners know it as "winter sowing." In doing my research today I ran across this:

Quoting:
A modified version of fall planting is to plant later in the year, from Winter Solstice (December 21) all the way up through February, depending on the severity of your winters. The harder your winter, the later you can plant. This takes advantage not only of the natural swings between cold and warm that occur in late winter but of the growth energy of the Earth that starts once the days begin to lengthen at Solstice. So this method combines temperature fluctuation with snowmelt and increasing daylength to help seeds grow. Europeans have been winter sowing for decades--I've seen a mosaic from Roman times depicting Frenchemn winter sowing beans--so it was not invented by an American. Americans simply tend to use throw-away containers instead of terra cotta or plastic pots, and to use the plastic tops instead of screens or glass. By the way, don't waste your time planting annuals in the winter. It will just stress them, and a lot of them will die or be knocked out by late frosts. Annuals will germinate just fine planted in the spring.
The page is http://www.alchemy-works.com/fall_planting.html.

So let's just use winter sowing.

Where is the DG Wintersowing database at? I'm curious to have a look at it. :)

Ticker, here is the link Dave gave way up in the thread. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/ws/ ao you don't have to search every entry to find it again.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Ticker... I am not sure that a seperate link has been made for it yet. If I am not mistaken Dave is tryign to get that ready somehow. What I have done is click on plant files, type in a name of a plant I want to se e and at the bottom of each plant file is a little link to winter sowing information. If any information has been put in yet, you will find it there

Alot of folks have stared puttign in information. I did find information for one plant I clicked on yesterday so far.

I thought I had found a page with some of the ones already put in, but it may have been my imagination cuz I couldn't find it again. But I get lost easlily tryign to get from point a to b so it may even be there and I have passed it. : )

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Bread and Butter! Thank you for that link. I did see one... I did se e one.. LOL

Is ther e someway to save that link , so as not to have to come all the way back down to this thread to find it again?

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Thanks guys! Very nice of you all to post a link for me. :)

Revclaus, I have been known to winter sow, but like most things I do I'm not real good on record keeping. Come February I usually just throw some seeds in a container and toss it out in the snow bank and forget about it till about March.. It's the only way I've ever been able to get Oriental Poppy to germinate.

I applaud all the folks that are putting in time on this tool and I think it will be very useful. I'll keep watching. :) You guys are the best!

Hello,
As this got lost a little bit could someone advise me on this. Thanks so much.

Ok, since I am new to this, and being in the zone I am in, I am trying to figure out what I can Polar Plant. I have a pack of French Lavender and it states to place in cold frame from Jan to March. Could I do these as Polar Planting in a milk jug? Just trying to figure out what I can and can't do. So many of my seeds are marked this way, if I can Polar Plant them, I would have lots

What I can't wait for is next year when everything has either worked or not. Now that we know how this database is going to work, we know what records to keep. Just imagine all the info we will have to add to this. I can't wait to start. If it would just get below 65 degrees. lol.

Yippee!

It's all I can do not to break out last years spread-sheet and dig in myself, but I tend to be a lil OCD when I start something. I can't make myself stop 'till I'm finished and my plate is almost overflowing at the moment.

Great going guys and THANKS!

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

La, I figured you had a spreadsheet!! I bet you even counted the seeds that are the size of a chigger. Remember, I saw pics of last years wonderful results you had.

This is just for you....I have stayed away from your website (even though I am a member there as well) and off of your thread. Please-do not come here to my home and bring this disgusting filth with you. I have had it, Dave has had it, and everyone here has had enough.

I am the victim in this mess, it was me who was called a thief, a liar, and told I needed counseling. All from someone at your doorstep, not here. I will repeat to you and everyone else Leave, if you will not talk about our project in a friendly way I was hurt before but now I am getting angry....Trudi did Not invent winter sowing per se or otherwise...it has been done in Brittan and been called that for many many years. I know you started the website, but that is not what the problem is here. As you can now see, we are not planning on or ever intended to copy anything. So either play nice or go away.

I am sick of this and it needs to end. I will not speak on this matter again. I also hope to not hear of it either.

I'm no expert. Winter sowing for 1st time this year but from what I've read I believe "cold frame" sowing is Winter sowing.

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

pupilpropogatr and anyone one else with questions about winter sowing in general, don't forget we have a winter sowing forum too:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/coldsow/all/

see you there!

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks both of ya'll. Off to the new thread.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Dave,
Could we please have a link that will pull up the wintersowing plant entries by Zone or Zip code? Since there's a zone/zipe code field already there in the data entry section, how about using it as a search field, too?

As a newbie, I don't even know the names of that many plants yet. But if I could access the info people from my area are inputting, I'd learn more and be able to start some winter sowing (and summer and fall and spring sowing, for that matter!).

Thanks, in advance, 'cause I know you'll give it some thought!

Linda

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Dave is working on that but it won't be available for awhile.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Gotcha.
