Winter Sowing database

Dave, you're so speedy!

I still like Polar Planting. ;-) Copyrighted, of course.

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

Dave's Polar planting :o)

Now that I have time...back to entering data for zone 4

I've just created my first entry.

I need a little bit of help.

I went to preview my entry before adding it and I wasn't allowed to do so. Am I missing something or is that feature possibly not there by design or is this so new that enhancements haven't been made as of yet? I'd sort of like to preview my entry before I add it.

Next question, If I find a mistake or want to add additional information, how do I correct or edit my entry?

Matter of fact, how do I find an entry I created after I created it? I checked the tab at the top for My Info where you list out our contributions and I can't find the entry I just created anywhere. Am I looking in the wrong place?

I sowed well over 20 different species of Sarracenia that year. Had a great germination rate on all of them using basically the same or similar process added to the comments. I notice there is a place for when they bloom/fruit/set seed. Takes a while for Sarracenia to mature as in several years plus. Is there anyway to denote that other than in the comments section or do we need to remember where the entry is to go back and add that information in the future when the plants begin sending up flower scapes?

Come to think of it, I was only allowed to add one date for germination yet the seeds germinated over a span of days. Should this simply be addressed in the comments section provided or is there a way to denote a first date of germination to a last date of germination? Concern being that people might toss their seeds prematurely if they go by the date I posted.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Super.... now all i have to do is find all my notes from last year.

To edit it, go to the main WS page, click to view your own entries and you can edit them from there.

I got to the area by going up to the top of this thread and clicking on one of the links here. How do I get to that area using the tabs and is the only way to access our own entries going to be through that particular tab?

I like the addition of an area for comments. That enables to contributor to describe blow by blow how they germinated the seed.

This is wonderful! Thanks Dave!
Can we also post pictures of what the seeds look like? (I'm just begining to recognize the seeds, which can be tricky sometimes:-)

Photos of seeds can go right into the appropriate PlantFiles entry. I've done it before for seeds of trees and shrubs.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Thanks E.
Maybe more pics of seeds will be posted now.

Wow. I have a lot of unworthy opinions of individuals on here (including myself) but together, we are wonderful! {{{{{us}}}}}} Yay!!!!

LOL-way to funny!!

I don't know whether y'all read my comment from the previous thread before we moved but I hadn't heard any comments so I wanted to repeat myself & see what you guys think: (I wish someone would tell me how to add those blue quote boxes!)

Quote:
" I was just reading through that thread pupil linked to ... about horror stories. It quoted part of GW rules:
"All posted material becomes the property of this site."
If that is true, the data ... any of us has posted there previously, cannot be used on our site. Our own data is no longer our property. And judging by the fact that Trudi has admittedly posted errors to "catch us" I'm quite sure that means she will enforce the "It's our database" rule to the max."

Does this mean we have to avoid using our own data. Or just that we must put it into DG's format? Surely they cannot claim ownership to anyone's research. That's intellectual property isn't it? Sorry if I'm sounding paranoid or ignorant but I just want to avoid any more accusations like I read this morning. Unbelievable!!

Excellent - boy do I have my work cut out for me now!! And I only have 2 years worth of data to share!!

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

Oh! I almost forgot! The database is really shaping up. Thanks, Dave & all you busy beavers (ie. distantkin, et al) who are jumping right in & getting it done. It is so exciting to see this developing. I'm certain this will be a very useful tool.

Dave, I think we need a "Method" field.

Has anyone figured out how to get to the data base without coming back to this thread and clicking on his link?

I just added a few entries...so easy and so worthwhile to share gardening data. BOUQUETS and thanks Dave!! ;0)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Pam, your data is just that - your data to share with anyone you choose.

It appears there is now a looming question of data integrity with the other database and what was submitted may have been deliberately corrupted.

I would encourage you to rely only on your own personal notes, and not try to find your information among the previously compiled data shared in the other database.

I am new to DG's and I have been reading through these threads and just wanted to say how impressed I am with everyone. It is amazing how quickly an idea has been conceived, gotten appropriate sponsorship, and is off to beta testing with a fully motivated project team in a matter of days! You all are extraordinary.

I am really looking forward to the new data base, and if I could just put in a plug for Canadian users, although I am not sure how many there are, or how difficult it would be, being able to enter a Canadian zip code would be fabulous, both here and in the plant files. Thank you for all your effort, it will be a tremendous resource. KD

I just read through the rules on GW and couldn't find anything that said, "all posted material becomes the property of this site." However, that may have been in the rules at one time and has been removed or else there are hidden "rules" I couldn't find. Whichever, that idea is a little scary.

I did notice, though, that Trudi in her thread on GW continuously referred to information from her site being posted on DG - although she did not offer a single example.

Just as a caveat, if it were me I would hesitate before posting WS info in the DG database and on her site, too.

Terry: Amen. No point in information we can't trust.

Karen

ps: I'm going to WS for the first time this winter, so y'all fill the new DB up for me. LOL.

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

what is so wonderful about this new database (I have entered all my A's from the journal and now on to B's-LOL) is that it is workable...so if Hollyhocks don't work for me this year, but next year they do (must have been the bad seeds that Darth Vader on the dark side sent me) I can change the info to reflect that. It is not just a database, but a journal. For example...when my grandmother wrote how she sowed the seed in her jar "just sprinkle on surface-do not cover with soil...that is what I added in the notes.
A wonderful pliable database and I love it. I can not say thank you enough to Dave and all those people who stepped up to the plate to make it happen.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Anita, you've kept great records. I hope it doesn't take you long to input yours into the new Data base. I'd love to be able to view it for my sowing in January.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Robbi or anyone still up at this hour, can you input information on seeds that didn't do well or only those that germinated and grew ok? ... Like your Hollyhocks for example.

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

Since first item is whether you had success I would assume you can say no for anything you tried & it just didn't grow. I've also noticed in the comments that some say it worked but only a few plants made it, etc. That will be very helpful especially when we get multiple entries to back up the ones that just don't work well.

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

Pam-what are you still doing up at this hour-LOL
I am tuckered. Time for me to get some sleep-I did make it up to the C's though. I left off in the middle of Campanula's. Can't wait to add the seeds I am sowing now-I kept track of everything :o)
Keeping track of the date they flower won't be fun because I know I will have well over 100 planters out there-LOL

Nite all :o)

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

thanks Cordeledawg - it will take a while as I am comparing 2006 with 2007 not only for the DB, but for my own course of action for 2008. I have to say that I'm glad I added a link to the plantfiles for any particular seed I sowed. It makes it easier for data entry now.

I added a link to the appropriate entry at the USDA site. In retrospect, wasn't too bright right about now. Wish I would have had the foresight to do what you did. One thing that is good is that I did some wintersowing in a wave of similar species so that will make it easy to load some in blocks.

i just contributed to the data base. could some one checck to see if i did it right? it is pride of barbados
thanks, kathy

May need some help-has anyone seen the weather for MN??-LOL
By this evening, I may need help finding the little baby's I put out there yesterday. I just thought-this will give me more room-like shelves-LOLOL

You all have a great day.

Kathy
Looks good to me. Wow-they germinated fast...wonder how they would fair here...I have some so I will have to check my zone out this year :o)

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

robbi, get the snow blower out. i thought of you when i watched the weather channel today

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

i planted 3 duting the summer. i did not soak them and set them outside. they took 4and a half weeks te germinate. they are only 3in. tall right now

I like that you added these comments, "i first nicked the seeds, then soaked in water 24 hours. Then planted very shallow, and covered the pot with saran wrap".

Comments are going to be a big help to gardeners who aren't all that familiar with starting seed and any tricks of the trade so to speak. I've got one entry I want to create for Gymnocladus dioicus (Kentucky Coffeetree) where you have to nick the seeds sort of and nicking those seeds is about the equivalent of holding a slippery marble in your hand. I'm having trouble putting into words how it was that I was finally successful nicking them. Ended up using a metal file of all things as the seeds went flying through the air in many directions. I think any comments anyone can add that might help someone clarify what exactly was done other than simply sloughing the seeds into a milk container will be a big bonus.

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

I agree-that is what will make our database stand out and be the best (and good spelling-LOL, I just had to correct myself 3 times because of typos-LOL)

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

i had trouble trying to nick them also. when i did my morning glory bush seeds i soaked, nicked and soaked.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

robbi, we all know i can't spell

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

Some I plan on nicking this year-others not-just to see what happens. I have a feeling I won't need to as that happens naturally with a freeze and thaw process-hence the reason we have to get our roads fixed every so many years up here :o)

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

going to put bush morning glory in data base. yell at ya later

It's amazing how many entries are in the WS system already!! What a surprise to wake up to!

Equilibrium asked about how to access it (other than this thread). When the database is mature and the features we want are basically complete, then we'll add a link to it from under the "Guides and Information" tab.

dave

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

Dave, I think the data base is great. Thanks to you and Robbi for making it happen
