Best/Worse/??learnt today...Pt21 A visit with friends...

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Morning all.
Betty thanks for explaining what the dap was for. When I first read about your stomach problem again , my first thought was like Rachie's........I wonder if you may have a reaction to MSG...you could ask the retaurant if they use it.

Sharran..your reindeer is lovely. In the pic it looks like a bronze statue.

Liz..about the sleigh..so far I have the base ready and the santa cut out..need to do some runners.I am going to wait till Sunday and follow along with Betty's instructions.

Laura..you must feel lost without your computer. Nice that you can say hi from your son's computer.

I watched Celine Dion on Oprah yesterday and loved her new song from her just released CD Taking Chances. I reserved one at Futureshop and will pick it up today.

Picked up another Oregon projection Clock yesterday as a Christmas gift for grandkids.Today I will go to another Canadian Tire store as I have bought all the stock from the one closest to me. I have six grandkids ..so need six clocks.

Have a great day everyone.
Cheers,
Carol

Pacifica, CA

morning all,

betty, hope your feeling better this morning must be something in that resturant that does not agree with you.after the sleighs are cut we need to paint it what color?and stain the runners right?

rachel, you did it again great finds, thats one neat looking plant bet it would look great in a hanging basket i like how you have it in the bottle tree,
those bawls bottles have to be the hardest to get the writting removed in fact impossible i even broke a couple and threw them in the tumbler all it did was fade some of the writting must be baked in the glass, hope your bil is on the mend tough time for him.

judy, take care of yourself are you taking something ?

carol, im not to far behind you will have everything cut out this evening and base coated i'll be ready if it is sunday

(Cathy), MO

Good morning everyone. It's going to be a super day. I caught out last outside cat to move over to the new house last night and feel like a 10,000 lb weight has been lifted from my shoulders! She's wild as all get out and you can't get very close to her, but she's part of the family. She was born in our wood pile and we watched her grow up; quirks and all! I have her safely in a big cat cage with the other 2 outdoor cats now. Will leave them in there a few days to get acclimated before letting them out to explore their new "digs".

Betty hope you're feeling betterh this morning

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Rachel & Betty...yes the vine can be considered invasive, you'd need to keep it in check if you plant it where it can't run wild. Betty it should be hardy in 5b. If you're into topiary stuff though, it's perfect for that. I have it somewhere that hardly anything else grows and it's gone totally crazy on a dry sunny neglected bank.

It climbs up very easily, I took a few pics of how it sprawls but my PC is really slow with loading stuff, I'll try today. Let me know if you guys want me to try and divide some for you

Victoria Harbour, ON

uuugghhhh..wrote a lengthly post and zap it's gone..not good!!!

Let's try one more time...

Sitting here with my feet up, coffee in one hand and western in the other..breakfast and a hard day at work...it's pay day today, my hand should be shaking taking it, I did NOTHING this week, as there was nothing to do...but I'll take it because tomorrow I'm going to Ezzywear to pick up some winter outfits and then to the big Markham Craft show in the aft. so there will go that cheque...thanks for your concern, I do have an allergy to MSG, tongue thickens and throat closes so I am very watchful...just not sure what's happening..but, just to make sure that if it's not a co-incidence I'll not eat there anymore..such a lovely restaurant though..

Trop..can you give me proper name for the vine..have lovely areas on the property that vines would enhance the entrances into the garden rooms..

Judy, maybe your girlfriend will now be able to drive over for a visit..is exciting time for her...did she purchase a new car to go along with that drivers license..

Shar, sounds like you've everything under control, except perhaps you do too much physical labor under the circumstances and it probably brings it on..acid reflux..glad the medication is working..must tell you a story though, when you are in pain DO NOT assume it's your back, not today but generally as time goes on..Roger had fusion, actually cut him across his throat..was 50/50 that he could have been paralyzed, luckily he was not but as the years went by, everytime he had pain he'd say it's the back pain..only too late did we find he had cancer and might have been detected had he been to his doctor..so MORAL of this story, is do not take for granted as the years go by that it can only be your back..ok/ok I'll get off my preaching stool..just worried about you hon...
Don't you hate it when you order something and it's not quite as described or doesn't fit...was it a coat or a dress jacket..how far exactly are you from Nashville Shar??

Liz, how's the hand..yes, you need to base it ..if you don't have acrylic paints you can used house paint as long as it's not glossy..should be light in color i.e. grey tones, light blue..you could go to $$$ store and pick up a bottle of grey or black/white to make a grey...you want to paint top and sides, I usually leave the back until I've made all my mess...lol...then I paint it grey...Liz, as for the bottles, 'GOOP' usually takes the stickers of in minutes...

Rachel..how exciting, I've seen those igloo blow ups..and you got it for 'free' did you say..I don't think we have anything like Craiglist here in Canada..will have to check it out for fun, see what kind of things are on it...some 'hugs' for the BIL might be in order..one can't imagine the heartbreak..feels like your world will never be the same...but as long as he knows he has family supporting him, loving him..in time he'll get his life back together..with Christmas coming as well, that always makes things feel so much worse...

Cathy, wouldn't you have to keep the cats much longer than a few days in their cage so they know it's home..I lost one in similar circumstances, think the vet told me to keep them in the house at least 2 weeks..

Cathy/Rachel/Gillian..your packages are on their way...will be easy to get them done before Christms..just think, we'll learn all the fiasco's on Sunday and it will be smooth sailing for yours...

Jeannine's got to work, no play time...just kidding...bet it's a load of your back knowing you are still working with same firm..bet they love you...

(Cathy), MO

I don't really know how long the cats need to stay in their cage. I've never moved outside cats before. Has anyone else on here had any experience with this?

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

here ya go Betty; http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/58078/

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Cat, my mom "rehabilitated" a ferel cat and she is the sweetest thing now. It takes time and patience. She kept her on her screened-in porch until she got accustomed to my mom. Then she let her our in the yard and knew she'd come back for food. Have you gotten them spayed/neutured? There is an organization that does this for ferel cats so they won't keep reproducing. Also, some vets will do it for free or at a discount. You should check with your SPCA. I would keep them confined for a while - not necessarily in a cage but if you have a garage or a screened porch they can't get out of, that would work. Just patience..... Good luck!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Jeannine, you at work this morning...

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Betty the hats are cute. Nothing like that aound here. Now I don't know what to do because someone elase brought up the Xmas discussion at work. So until a decision of some kind is made my plans are on hold.

We unloaded truck early. I should say the other 2 girls did. I got to wait on customers and run around! LOL Had to go in early the next day and stock shelves. That made a nice 2 days. Now I'n off work for 2 days and plan on cleaning finally. Just have to remember to do one room at a time and not hop all over.

Have to get back to work. Hi to everybody!

(Cathy), MO

Thanks gardengirl. Yes all 3 of them are spayed. The wild one had a litter before I could catch her, 4 years or so ago, but the other 2 are tame.
I don't have a screened in porch, but sure wish I did! That's be perfect! Maybe someday. But it'll have to come AFTER the garage.
Hope everyone has a super day today!

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

yes - I just finished reading Jessie's posts from Australia. I wonder how she is doing. Wouldn't it be neat if we could get Laura and her together to meet???

Betty, how are you feeling? You know it's funny, I had some kind of funky belly thing going on the other day too. My tummy was bloated and the waist band of my pants really hurt! I must have eaten something that really made me pop out - very uncomfortable! Better now though!

I'm going on a "field trip" for my class on Saturday. I am driving with one of the guys in my class up to the National Arboretum in Washington, DC. He's coming by my house at 7:15 am so it will be a long day for me! DH and the kids were going to go with me but there is nothing around the arboretum for them to see and the gardens just don't thrill them like me. Anyway, should be fun and hopefully we'll be back by early afternoon.

I've got DH's family coming up for Thanksgiving next week. I'm just glad I don't have to travel anywhere! We switch back and forth between families each year so this year is his family. My parents are going to my sister's house. I ordered a pre-cooked turkey but it is $46!!!! I think I will be cooking one on my own!!!

Traditionally, we go out the friday after Thxgvg and buy our Xmas tree from one of the local lots. We figure get it now and get it in water. We'll put it up probably the second week of Dec. It should be fun with Murphy!! DH will get the lights up on the outside of the house after Thxgvg too. That should be fun!

My sister is coming up on the 30th to go to the Bizarre Bazaar with me. It's such a neat craft show! I always spend way too much money!!!

We just booked a cabin up in the mountains for 3 nights after Christmas. I'm really looking forward to it. No dog!! Just us and possibly my 13 yr old neice. I just booked the kennel for Murphy from the 24th -30th. I might have a friend who can watch him the 24-26 but just in case, I booked those days too.

Yucky, rainly day here today. Was very warm this morning but a huge cold front is coming thru and it will be down in the 30's tonight! We need the rain!!!

Well, I've rambled on. I will check back in in a bit.

thankyou for blessing me.

now, youngest DD is doing well, (9 weeks pregnant), still at the nausea stage tho. Her name is Jess. Emma my oldest one is coping well with the new son rylie. he is now 6 months old! she had post natal depression with the first one but is doing well with this one. he is so cute, husky voice and all! he is a big boy too! My DS ho lives with me was mugged at knife point the other day. i KNEW there was something wrong, my mother senses were going off and i was trying to contact him. he is ok, lost all his wages the poor kid. gosh he has had a rough time. his engagement ended, then he lost his job, now this.....i feel for him. on the up side huis new job seems to make him happy. he said to me the other day that he wants to settle down and have a family. perhaps you could send a prayer up for him? his name is chris. my youngest son joel, seems to be doing ok. he is a security guard for hotels and such where bands are playing. whilst his engagement broke off as well, i think he is happier.
DH is feeling better now, he doesnt stay sick for long.
Chloe my GD is getting to be such a little miss! she is 3 and we were shopping for a new aDVD for her to watch. she turned to me and said, "have you found one that would be SUITABLE for me nini?" she calls me nini as she couldnt say nana when she was little and whilst a nini over here means someone silly, i dont mind the name lol. can you believe the vocabulary? suitable?? lol

so, all is ok. today is a good day.

Victoria Harbour, ON

4:00pm, starting to rain, temps have fallen so quickly..there is a storm weather watch for tonight and tomorrow for our region - Barrie to home...first Friday working but I know Paul so I'll switch the telephones to my home, bring home tel. numbers for those who have appts. just in case..doesn't matter if we come in, takes 2 secs. to change things..better safe than sorry...they are calling for high winds - 6 to 12 " of snow..not a lot but is dangerous if blowing..visability poor..I've plans to have my girlfriend pick me up here at the office at 1pm to go to Markham craft show, would hate to miss that..could always go late Sat. or Sunday I guess..have girls coming over to do craft project and then I want to do my flower arrangements for inside and outside so I can enjoy them...just so much to do all the time...

Carol, went to Canadian tire at lunch..no clocks, will check in Midland tomorrow if I'm home...but, the did have a great sale on the grazing and standing deer which light up..again, they wanted to come home with me..when will they ever come up with 'treasures' that don't end up in my car..lol...each and every week I take $100.00 and spend it on something foolish, that's my treat to myself..anyone else do something as foolish...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Laura, nice to hear from you this early your morning..sounds like your day is planned out to the sec....out of the mouth of babes..so cute, you wonder where they hear it from..guess they listen when you think they are not..perhaps that's a good reason to watch what is said...tell you a cute story...when I was first married (17) Roger (22) he had 10 brothers/sisters...Gail, babygirl was 6 months old, next was Louis and he was 3..anyhow, our parish had a priest who dropped over it almost seemed every Sat. night or Sun. night at supper time, so guess my in-laws were talking about it and Louis must have been around, one Sunday the door bell rings and it's Father, Louis opens the door and says 'mommy it that *&&^^))_((* priest again, here at supper time AGAIN, LOOKING FOR A FREE MEAL' don't think they didn't want to hang their heads in shame..lol..we still joke about it...

I'm tired again, bet you can tell, I'm rambling..but that's okay..family members do that right...must keep awake for 1/2 hr. more...

We'll look forward to photo's..

To the rest of you, remember I shared all those Thanksgiving photo's, will be sitting home patiently all weekend waiting for yours...

Glenview, IL

Just got home...and to my delighted eyes a package addressed from VA!
Thank you very much Jeannine. I am so blessed to have such giving friends.
...my gosh you all are spoiling me...but I love it, never get mail, so I've been in a bit of heaven...Thank You. Now my treasure will be placed on the tree and then replaced right here by my computer where they are right now...

be back in a bit to post.

I edited this to take out what the gift was...me and my big mouth, was just so excited...hopefully no one else already read, don't want to ruin the suprise.
..so sorry for my stupidity.

Hi, folks...
Getting chilly here, the 70 daytime degrees is a thing of the past, I think.
Cats are behaving...tree is all together..Yayyyyyy! Actually they have been so quiet today, I think they might be up to no good.

Betty, to answer your questions, the item that I returned was a mulberry colored velvet trench coat...really pretty, but I had ordered a size 6, thinking I could wear it over sweaters, even if bulky.....they sent a size 4. That would be too tight over sweaters....so I returned it. Hopefully I will get the bigger size before the holidays. there are a few parties i would like to go to.

You asked about Nashville...it is about 10 miles from me, maybe a little less. It takes about an hour and a half if I don't stop on the way.

Thanks for the health advice. Hiding the source of pain is why I don't take pain blockers, unless they are non narcotic, plus the narcotic ones make me feel like yuck!

You all sound as if you are all in the Christmas spirit...I love hearing about all your decorations. And I can't wait to see pictures.

Tropi, I want a start of the vine, too. if you have enough....I like vines to grow down a rail I have on the back deck...think it would grow potted??

Laura, it is so good to hear from you. You sound better, but like Betty, I think you hide things from us.

I am finishing up the veggie paintings for Kim (bluekat)...and just took a paint drying break....so back to work for me.
You have a good evening....all of you.
Hugs...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Just you be careful Shar..but then I know you are..happens to a lot, mask their pain and can't see the forest for the trees...let's hope your your trench coat arrives..omg..if I don't stop growing you'll just have to add a 1 in front of your 6...looking forward to seeing your tree..now is Thanksgiving this weekend or next weekend...do any of you get mixed up when let's say it Wedn. and someone says next Friday, I assume it's in 2 days but many mean the Friday after next...now I have to ask specifically..haven't heard to much buzz so it must mean not this weekend but next...

Kyle and Noah were here just as I arrived home...good company for me..I was laying on the couch dozzing off and they were downstairs on the computer...Greg and Melanie just picked them up, told them they shouldn't be visiting e-bay until AFTER Christmas..now isn't that an invitation to do so...lol...well, I'm off to bed, keep looking out for that 'blizzard' they are calling for in this area, nothing as of yet so guess it's work tomorrow..which for me is ok because I want to be in the city for clothes and craft show shopping..guess it will be a surprise..wake up, look out and see if it's a snowday..perhaps we could have the blizzard from 6am-9am..then settle down for me to travel..lol..I ask for a lot don't I...

Noah didn't tell anyone that while playing in school yard today that he hit another boys head accidentally..while saying goodbye and in good lighting we could see his eyes turning black and his nose is quite swollen..Greg thinks it's broken..guess he's off to the doctor's tomorrow..doesn't want to go tonight..we are teasing him, he's been wearing his hair long for so many years that finally Greg told him it get all chopped off tomorrow...he's almost in tears so wouldn't doubt he'll play on the sore nose tomorrow she he won't have to visit a barber...

Off to bed I go..much to do in the morning if I go to work..girlfriend Rita will pick me up in the city and it's fun/fun/fun....will share my finds with you tomorrow night...

Pacifica, CA

evening all,

laura, you just sound so up thats a good thing are you going to be able to join in on sunday?

jeannine, your trip sounds like it will be fun i just love to look at different gardens gives me tranqulity so your going to be the cook as of now so am i unless they change their mind again lol

shar, bet the treet looks just lovely ,cant help but wonder if the two have a plan when your not looking lol

betty, yes the hand is better just a tiny bit of soreness should be gone by sat, wow are you going to get lots of ideas at this craft show hope you have a good time
poor noah are you off tomorrow? well sleigh is cut out and painted( oh i had a box full of paint) runners are stained, now tomorrow can i put varethane on the runners? and santa is all cut out boy oh boy am i ready! now its time for bed so with that everyone have a great evening liz

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

liz, darlin'...
you and betty move at such a fast pace I just can't keep up with you!!!

I can't wait to see all your decorations, too.....and those of everybody else.

Hugs again.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning, looked outside about 3am..wind was just a blowing, settled in for another hour sleep, NO SNOW..so am up, getting dressed and will be ready to leave at 7am..just as well..Rita will pick me up at work at 1 unless of course the 'storm warning' comes into effect...if that happens it will be a long ride home...so come what may, I'll enjoy my day...hope you do same....

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Hope the weather holds off for your fun day at the craft show Betty.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Betty..the snow is at Canal Rd on the 400..it was just on Breakfast TV
Snow squalls north of #7

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Sharran, it definitely wil grow in a container. One of my clients that was in a wheelchair made a topiary in her container garden with it. In just a couple of months the vine had reached the top of her sculpture (needed more time to really fill in though).

I'll try and see if I can't get some divisions started (it's stubborn to transplant)...just everyone make sure it's in a place where it can run wild, don't want to be cursed for bringing anything invasive into someone's garden...lol...really, if you water it regularly it grows slower.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Carol, sitting here hoping boss will call..from what they say we'll have hazardous conditions for about 50 miles..yuk..says it will clear later this aft. which means I could still leave here at 1 when my work shift is over, go to Ezzywear just down from work and head out to Markham..Carol do you ever go to the big craft show there..probably less than 1 hr. from you??? we could have met there..oh what fun..

Victoria Harbour, ON

Trop, at the very back of my yard is a natural ditch area of about 10 ft. - row of trees across the entire back..I think that's where I'd like to plant some..would grow up the tree and perhaps hang on limbs..wouldn't that look pretty..

You and Carol are both up early this morning...my grandmother always used to say 'did you pee your bed?'
funny..

Trop, bet you are not watching for 'winter watch' blizzard conditions...lol..

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

You be careful if you go Betty.
I have never been to the Markham craft show. I go once in awhile to small ones closer to home. But I am afraid I am not in need of more crafty things. I have so much "stuff" I have gathered over the years.
I had my "crafty" period about 15 years ago..
Do you remember the craze in making hat boxes?..I did those, and cloth covered albums and little phone books etc.

Next summer I would like to take a drive up to meet you, and have a tour of your garden and home. I have actually looked at a map to see how to get there.

Pacifica, CA

morning all,

and thought i was a early riser lol

shar, it was that day i was down from my hand, had to make up time lol
usually after thanksgiving it starts to go up

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning, made it to the city ok..you were right Carol, weather was nasty near Canal road for perhaps 10-15 miles then it cleared..says it will get worse later this morning so lets hope that Rita doesn't cancel out..looking forward to my day!! Markham has absolutely everything..specialty foods, jewelry, clothing, artsy/art, floral etc. a good place to view what's new on the market..mostly vendors from USA and all over Canada...really a good day of entertainment...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Santa Sleigh....

Thought for any of you who are ready to undertake our project on Sunday (remember, we'll do yours when you have a few hours available IF you cannot join us Sunday morning) I'd post a list of materials you need...9a.m.

You will need your runners stained...your wood piece basecoated (optional grey/blue color)

Decoupage (podgy- matt or satin)

Quite a messy job, so make sure you have an old table cloth ($ store)
or something to protect your work area...as well, I even purchased some plastic gloves but paint does remove if you don't mind yukky hands...

Paints needed: white/light blue/dark blue-navy or midnight blue
med and a dark green
If any of you want a sunset type sky then little yellow
orange and/or red might help

Plastic wrap..i.e. saran wrap type...cheaper type has more body, but any type will do

Brush: either sponge brush or any type of brush..not necessary but if you have a liner type brush we can use it..but do not go out and buy one..a tooth pick will do

Now we're ready...

Good to hear you made it ok Betty. The sun is shining brightly here but it is -1c.

The Markham craft show was featured on Breakfast televison this morning so I saw a bit of it. Have fun. I'll bet you get a lot of ideas for further projects.

I wanted to just ask if we need the (Decoupage) Podge It matte finish you mentioned before.

Going to do my errands now.

Cheers,
Carol

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Did have a chance yesterday to check this thread, I'm about half way caught up and will finish catching up tonight.

Trop- Yes, I would love some of your wire vine. Just let me know how much postage is and I will send you a check.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Hello All,
wow, I've been so crazy at work! can't believe it's time to go...well almost.
So i hope that you all enjoyed your days and making ready for the big workshop.

Can't wait to hear all your great find and new ideas at the Craft show. i am sure you will just be buzzing all over with eyes wide and a grin just the same. LOL sure wish i could go. Hope noah's nose wasn't broke, poor guy.

Liz, glad your hand is better! My, you sure don't mess around, zip zip and your are done! But, see now you got to wait...all the way to Sunday, hehehe.
Glad you found all your paint. Putting my work table in the computer room and setting up tomorrow. Dh helping me to rip some boards for the runners tonight, then stain and paint the sleighs!
Woohooo, are we all excited?

Laura, so good to see you. my tomorrow is looking good! Now are you up and running again? I sure know missing computer is real big drag.

Tropi, I am wondering if the vine can withstand shade? If so I would like a small cutting too if you have enough.

Dawn did you find us?

Oh Carol, won't that be fun if you get to visit Betty! Is she along way away?

Well got to finish up my day here..see you later!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

And here is one cool cat........
looking totally innocent........hmmmmmmm

Thumbnail by Sharran
Victoria Harbour, ON

Shar..what a sweetie..mine just escaped outside as I entered the house..not sure how long they'll be out with snow on the ground...

We started out shopping and I bought 3 outfits, velvet type looking jean color slacks and jacket...brown set and then black set..a blouse, a bathing suit cover up..yes in a blizzard I'm looking to be covered up when wearing my suit downsouth...a hat for one of the boys..will purchase each one if once they see it they'll wear it..

Then off to Markham we went..was sooo disappointed...the gentleman that I always buy oodles and oodles of pieces was sold out..he said inside of 2 hrs. almost everything gone and still has 2 days to go...he said he didn't have as much this year because he was dealing with prostrate cancer and then 3 weeks ago his father passed away..understandable for sure..so, much of what was there I could do, lots of art-mega $$$..Rita's brother was there selling 'pen and ink' wildlife paintings..from what I saw cheapest might have been $300...

I have a set of Christmas carollers that I purchased in Nashville one year so I saw a perfect metal sleigh that I can make an arrangement and include them in..bought some red berry branches to add to the arrangement..bough a couple of the block lights that have ribbon on them..DIL makes them but couldn't resist..also bought a little christmas piece..so, still have money left..oh my..that's a first .. will have to go to town Sunday and spend it I'm sure...

Hit a storm for about 20 miles on the way home..feels nice and safe being home .. so cozy with fireplace on...so I'm going to say goodnight and I'll gab with you all tomorrow...

Best of today..spending time with Rita and of course a craft show...
Worse...not getting any 'treasures' from the glitter boutique
What did I learn..that each and every year I dislike the snow and the cold...l

Pacifica, CA

evening all,

jeannine what a wonderful surprise thank you will go on my special tree

judy, oh boy ready to go im going to try to get a table in the room i think i'll pull the round table from the kitchen i think i'll have enough room to work lol

shar, dont believe that pose lol there's a plot involved..

betty, how dissapointing that must of been for you ready to get ideas and such, i think it would be so fun and exciting to get some snow! now i have all my supplies just waiting for sunday now my question is is it 9.00 your time and my time? or are we on different time zone fil says were the same so now im ever so confused lol
laura, glad to hear from you you will be joinning to?
