What's Blooming? #14

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Nice pics, Kim! Adenium is especially pretty and unusual!

Hartford, CT(Zone 5a)

I was going to post some pics of the various MGs I have but all I have is a camera phone and it turns everything purple or lavender to blue :(

In the garden and around the yard I have numerous Black-eyed Susan. I've never really paid a lot of attention to them, I let them grow wherever they want, it adds color. But this year I started noticing that there are several different kinds of flowers. Some are double, some have blossoms that curl under and some look like the petals have been dipped in brown. I even have two plants that have variegated leaves. Those I had to save from the deer by moving them right next to the house. I have never tried to harvest the seed to plant but I figure the way the get around it should be pretty easy. Of course I don't know if they will produce the same kind of flower but if anyone wants some there is a very large supply.

I think Love in a Mist seeds just drop and self sow. But it's been years since I grew them. Anyone want to chime in?

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Kim, I'm thrilled. Don't worry about them being late. What a fantastic desert rose. I have one, but it didn't bloom for me this year. What do you feed yours?

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

How large does Love in a Mist grow? Does it self sow invasively? That is a beautiful blue bloom.

Not exactly in bloom but we seem to have adapted a family of wild turkeys in our backyard neighbor hood. They come in single file to our yard. The Tom comes in first, checks things out and if he finds it favorable makes a cluck or two and in comes the Mama hen with the brood. Again in single file Mama at the head and 9 chicks scurrying behind. They do cause some damage by scratching the ground in the beds. but after a guy has to eat!

Harper and Teresa,

Zora, (my adenium) is a rescue last year from HD. She has a very large caudex so I'm sure she's up there in age. I truly just sprinkled her with Osmocote this spring and then mother nature did the rest. She was outside all summer long. I have 2 seedlings which were also out there and didn't bloom so I'm sure age has something to do with it. I just think they are quite unique and even when not in bloom have such character.

Theresa, the Love in a Mist is new to me and I put it in a window box so I'm sure the size of mine is not their true size. I have many that probably won't even get to bloom for me. The one pictured is probably only about 7 inches tall. I have started some seeds now hoping for larger plants which bloom sooner next year. Not sure if they re-seed in Maine or not as again, this is my first year but I'm sure someone who has had them in previous years will chime in :)

Arfitz, we had wild turkeys here recently. Are you sure you have a Tom? Cause someone told me the mamas usually have a daycare for everyone's kids and the dad's aren't involved.

Kim, I'm jealous of your love-in-a-mist. I tried to start some from seed this year (courtesy of Venu) and had no luck. I'm afraid I may have let them dry out a bit too much. I do have some balloon plant seedlings that are finally taking off though. One of them actually has some buds! so I will get to see them before they freeze LOL. I made a mistake though. thought they were the short ones and planted them in the front of the bed. then I checked and they are the taller variety. love your Goldfish plant :) and belated thanks for the pic of the blue & white nemesia...looks almost like a viola. very cute.

Victor, I may need to get some Autumn Joy sedum to plant with my ninebark. that is so pretty. I am really loving the color on the Summer Wine. Was it you who preferred the Dart's Gold? I may have to make room for another.

venu, the bees have been all over my obedient plant...just lovin' it. they also love the fennel. this was the best shot I could get, but I counted at least 5 on one head

I finally got Malva Zebrina to grow in my garden...yeah, I know, it's practically a weed. but I've trouble getting it to really catch on. now if I can just get it through the winter (sigh..)

Beautiful everyone. Jan I just love the AA Pink and Seattle! So many flowers I want and so little room!! Eleanor

newly planted butterfly bush 'Harlequin' is blooming already

Hi, Eleanor. I meant to tell you how easy the BESV is to grow from seed. you should save some from all your colors. I grew mine in a little 6" square flat and it was 3' tall and blooming in the house before it was warm enough to even to put it ouside. this pic is from 5/18

Looks great Jan, Wine and Roses is pretty big - how are you doing keeping the biggies under control. That's a light Seattle.

Zebrinus reseeds mildly here, not crazily like hollyhocks or others. Nice buddelia.

not a whole lot new right now, Little Lamb hydrangea

Al, I did NOT provide adequate support for some of the heavy ones...tall enough but not strong enough. I'll do better next year :) Lauren Michelle IS the tallest, and she's fine with the support I provided. Probably not nearly as tall as she would have been in your garden, but looking good to me. I can't take pics from the top of my garage anyway.LOL If I stick to closeups of the blooms I can get away with it.

AA Pink is holding up OK

here's one end of my 'new this year' 70' long cottage garden. I'm very pleased with it's progress. and the fact that the only plant in this pic that I bought is the helenium

Jan, you must be very proud! 70' of Garden all grown from seed minus1 ?? That's awesome!!!!!!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

There's that picture again. Jan, I just love that picture of the fairy trellis with BESV growing on it. I have to say it truly is a beautiful display :)
GREAT growing!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Great photos and a great border, Jan.
Zebrina loves it dry, here. The birds must love the seed since they've planted them in several spots around the house. One was growing in a crack in the cement walk.

Al - love that hydrangea.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh dear I thought I posted for some of these pretties yesterday, hmmm must not have hit send. Duh.

Anyway I do need a garden stretcher because every time I see all of your beautiful flowers and plants that I don't already have I want them too.

Victor I love that color combo, I do have both of those plants just not next to each other but it sure does work well.

Kim your Zora has definitely enjoyed the great outdoors and is repaying you with some really beautiful blooms.

Grampapa all gorgeous pics. The yellow HH and your wonderful border are just terrific.

Al the Little Lamb looks like a real good one, really nice. :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Great shots Jan and yes, you should be proud! I like that pink AA too. No, I did not say I prefer Dart's Gold. I did say I slightly prefer Coppertina though. Do you get lots of skeeters near that still water? Hope it's treated.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

That's a fantastic garden short, Jan. I love all those colors and varieties. Great job!!

Nice shots Jan. With all the great pics of dahlias, I'm almost thinking of getting some next year. My nigella didn't make it either, but I think I drowned them.
ngam, love the insect pics. I don't think I've ever seen such a red dragonfly!
Victor, does the sedum in the basket floop? It's a nice clear pink.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's a spreading type so it hangs over the side of the basket.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Jan - you shouldn't be bragging about stealing so many plants. I see Jean Marie is flowering there too.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

ngam - I like the dragonfly - I'll take one in pink.

Victor - nice shot of the weigela and sedum

another hydrangea 'Unique' this one looks like it will have nice form without much work.
