More great fall beauties everyone.
Amy your MG is a terrific deep color, so rich.
Eleanor the BESV is just outstanding and I just love those paniculata hydrangeas, need more.
Venu that side shot of the passion flower is so cool, really nice pic.
Victor what the heck are you feeding your plants? I do love that columbine, do yo think it will bloom every year in the fall too? The DL scape growing what looks like a new little plant is very odd too. Anemone is very delicate and is one of those plants that when I see someone elses' I think "I should get that".
What's Blooming? #14
Fuzzy or not, love the pink berries Victor. Onewish, I'll let you know how they do. I'm not giving them any extra care for winter. Actually I was going to rip them out, but the current bloom festival saved it from the compost pile
Kim your post reminded me of the Gentian. I keep checking and the flowers dry up, form a casing and look like they are going to seed then just fall apart with no seeds. This would explain why I never have any babies. I did layer one stem when this first came up so I hope next spring it will have rooted and there will be a baby plant to send out to you. I will keep checking in case one blossom does set seeds but right now it is not looking good in that department. Will keep you posted. :)
Thanks everyone for the comments. The BESV will not come back next year - until I plant new ones. I don't really have room to start my own seeds and grow cuttings. I love the BESV (there's actually 6 plants in that container!) and will spend the money on the plants from the nursery. I buy really small plants and they aren't too expensive. This year they had the 3 colors and I just had to have each one. I've toyed around with the idea of setting up growing lights in my basement but not sure I want to spend a lot of money on equipment and then decide I don't want to. I don't want to plant 100 petunia seeds to get 6 plants!!
victor - is Pink Diamond about the same as Quick Fire? They look similar. I can't wait until mine gets bigger and will have more blooms. Eleanor
Absolutely beautiful pictures again :)
ngam thank you for thinking of me :) A spring trade would be GREAT. I will have a beautiful Aster (see picture) that I can send you part of as it's just getting WAAAY out of hand. Some things do great out there and others....well....not so good. I think it's called Wonder of Staffa. I have last year's picture as it's just starting to get ready to open.
Victor, I love your Columbine1 I love those doubles so much. I have red Bee Balm (babies I took off the mother) and transplanted that are blooming now.
What you have on your daylily stem is called a proliferation. It will make roots and if separated and planted with be a clone of the mother plant. :)
Eleanor - I really liked the different colors of BESV together. The only plants I've seen in my area are baskets of climbing vines already blooming. The baskets are $25 minimum....no longer affordable in retirement!! I haven't seen the small plants.......I agree that small affordable plants would be fun to mix as you did.
Victor - those are some lovely shots - especially for so late in the season. I love that double columbine....the color is terrific! That does seem odd to have it still in bloom or reblooming now! Lucky you!! Must make the prison cell feel like home!! :)
That Columbine is lovely, Victor, and so is Pink Diamond. Can't wait to see both of mine bloom.
Venu - now I'll have to check up on my Passiflora to see if it's doing better. Your photos are wonderful. Send the bee to you know who.
Thanks. Eleanor - I just planted Quick Fire last year so it's still small and has not bloomed much. It blooms earlier than Pink Diamond. Kim, I'll try planting the proliferation.
Victor - hope your proliferation proliferates! Yikes, I'm beginning to sound like Pirl or Al.........
Victor, does it have roots yet? You may want to wait until it has roots. And if not, I THINK (you may want to research it) you can root it in water.
I did not notice roots yet. Hope it gets them before it gets cold! It's about six feet from the late blooming Columbine. Must be an enchanted portion of the garden.
Keep looking at that Columbine, SO pretty. Reminds me of grape Koolaid. I love the way the petals are edged in white and the "bonnet" shape of it :)
Victor - just take the proliferation off, cut about two inches below where it appears on the scape, then stick it in the soil a few inches from the mother plant. It should grow. We do that with all of ours, roots or not (mostly not).
Thanks Pirl :) I wasn't sure what to do with it, only knew what it was called *lol*
I've lost every single one I've tried to root in water and that's too upsetting. Planting them by the mother plant we tend to forget about them and there's no reason to feel we've done anything wrong. I'm all for guilt free gardening.
Oooh! Kim, after seeing Ngam's gorgeous picture, I would LOVE some 'October Daphne'! I will Dmail you!
Really nice BESV mix Grammy! I don't think I've seen the pink color before.. nice.
Venu- love love love that Passionflower! I just learned that they are a host plant for Variegated Fritillary butterfly caterpillars ( I found one in my yard today, so I've been online researching), so keep on the lookout for them.
Victor- I'm also on the "love your Columbine" boat. Blue and yellow is my fav. color combo for flowers. What is 'Pink Diamond' (besides pretty)?
Louise- There was no tag with the Zinnias :-( I am going to try to save seed though, so if I am successful I will be happy to share with you! I will keep you posted.
This Painted Lady stopped by for a brief visit today. Yippee!
Victor - you have Winky Double Blue/White - looks great , I got one after it flowered. I have the red one and it is my favorite columbine.
Nice passiflora venu.
Aster looks nice Kim
Good shot of the Painted Lady aspen.
Louise - you must be sounding like Pirl - I alays make sense perfect.
great pictures everyone .... great sedum ngam
Aspen - Pink Diamond is a Hydrangea paniculata variety.
Beautiful pics and I especially love the sedums - so colorful. I may have to go shopping!! Aspen - this is the first year that I have seen the rose colored BESV. There are two nurseries in my area that carry the small BESV. They are in pots about 2" and cost around $4.00 I think (they weren't much more than that anyway). They are fun to get small and watch them grow. Eleanor
I love my October Daphne Sedum, don't get me wrong but I took 2 large clumps from her earlier this year to put in the new bed out front and in another area in the back bed. I don't know if I've ever trimmed the "momma" back and she just wanted to sprawl into everything. It was time to "rejuvenate" her so that is why I cut her all the way back . It is a pretty sedum even when not in bloom as the foliage is a bluish color. ngam, your pictures really capture her coloring nicely :)
Many taller sedums get the look of being a cat's nest at this time of year. They flop (or floop, Victor and Al) and need support before September to keep their shape.
I have started pinching the tall sedum back a couple of times in spring and very early summer because by the time they bloomed in the fall every year, they were flopping all over the place. It has helped this year so far none of them are flopping. This may be also do to weather but I think pinching them helps. You get more flowers maybe a bit smaller in size but not much and they seem to be blooming at the usual time.
That's a GREAT idea! I will be doing LOTS of pinching next year. I think I should have pinched my garden mums too as I don't think they are going to bloom but are HUGE. Next year I'm going to do better with these things. Have never pinched before so it will be all new :)
Small lampshades, with fabrick removed, works well to hold the larger sedums up and prevent the flopping. Anchor them with earth staples. I should have spray painted it green before I put it up but I didn't know if it would work - it did. This was a larger stripped lampshade for the Baptisia. Thrift shops are good resources.
Ol darn, I just replaced mine and sent the others away in the trash!
When you're shopping check the store for discounted lampshades and maybe you'll find some.
Kim, I just received balloon Plant seeds from you!! Thank you so much!! You are so organized with them, I won't be confused. There's so many, too. I'm so happy. Thank you again!!
Harper
Very nice combo, Victor.
Thanks Pirl. They look like they could be the blooms of the Summer Wine - right color range.
Harper, I'm so happy to hear you received them OK and that you're happy with them. I'm sorry I'm so late in the season but they are one of the last plants to ripen their seeds. As it was, I threw away 1/2 of the seeds because they STILL were not ripe.
I hope they do well for you and can't wait to see pictures :)
Kim
Pirl - that is such a good idea.....never thought of it!
Victor - pretty nice combo of colors and textures!
Al - yure rite....I lost my head. 'scuse me pleeze.
Aspen - I'd LOVE to have some of your red zinnia seeds..Thanks! I really love that Painted Lady!
I didn't know what this was going to be until today as it is the first time I grow them. A little late blooming but better late than never. I have started some seeds this fall so HOPEFULLY next year they will bloom earlier. I'm finding alot of my annuals are going to have to be brought in order for me to collect seeds. I'm not 100% sure what I did wrong. I think I must have started them too late.
