Pink Blizzard x Purple Blizzard grow out results Thread 02

Becky, I love your blizzard flowers!

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Mine aren't blooming very well and few of the blooms are setting seed pods. A lot of the buds are falling off. I have it on the west side and it does get a lot of sun. I'm considering unwrapping them and trying to put them back a little for protection. They aren't growing very fast.

AuntAnne,

Sorry yours aren`t doing so well. Just see what you can do about protecting them from too much heat. Morning sun and afternoon shade is working well with mine. Feed them some plant food made for blooming plants if you haven`t already. Don`t worry if yours don`t make it. You can always get more seeds and try again. All this growing things is trial and error anyway.

Any slightest drift of weedkiller will stop these plants in their tracks. They will not die from light drift from weedkiller but it will stunt growth and the blooms will be held back and the ones that do bloom will look funny all twisted and not open all the way. Your neighbors may have sent some weedkiller drift your way. If it is not severe they can recover and continue within a few weeks.

Sometimes, a vine that doesn`t like the spot where you put it will fail to thrive even when good care is given. I have some spots I will not grow the nils because they failed to thrive in those areas. The same flowers put on a big show in other areas so I have a map in my mind of my yard for spots where I can grow these plants successfully.

beckygardener, Yours are looking great! That dark star is a ray pattern. I expect now for some pink ones to show this trait.

Here is one of mine showing the ray pattern lightening in the folds and the more developed blizzard pattern.

Ya`ll have a great day and happy growing!

Karen

I'm at work right now but wait till you see the one that I took this morning omg it's pretty. It's a double. I think. That and a pretty white with some purple/blue stripes. I'll download this evening when I get home.

The lattice behind the bloom enhances the photo!

Ok, I apologize for the fuzziness of the first bloom.

Do you think its to late to start a few of the seeds you gave
me at the RU? I would love to start a few, but don't want to waste them
if its to late.

If you start them now put two-three seeds a piece in two 4 gallon pots. You could put all of them in a 4 gallon but that may not be enough room for all 5 to grow and develop to the fullest potential. Put in a tee pee or large tomato cage arrangement as has been discussed previously. Feed every 7-10 days after they get true leaves a bloom booster food. Then don`t allow them to get tangled in anything else, watch the weather and be prepared to bring them inside if need be to finish making seeds.

My first bloom, pink blizzard

azreno, that is a nice one. The white throat is pretty and sets it off I think. Now so far you got 1 out of 5 pink.

Karen

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Yeah, I think the white really sets it off, too.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

If you want, tie a yarn on that one, follow the next flowers right after that one and note the pattern of each one and see if the markings change. This way you could see if the pattern was stable or if it changed. This way if you see something different come up you will know a little something about the vine already. Karen

Well, here is the purple flower, the winds were really strong, so it is not a good photo. The other four vines turned out to have pink flowers. This one of the purple so far. Wind whipped.

This is the 2nd purple flower, also wind damaged or something... I did fertilize and put some bloombooster yesterday on all the mgs. Hopefully that will help.

A couple of mine bloomed out like that too, and no rain or wind here.

Hi,

If you weren`t awake at 3 or 4 AM then you don`t really know what the weather was like at the time they bloomed. If you look around and all your flowers look torn then chances are it was windy very early in the morning. There are some that open funny all crinkly like they have a beard or woke up on the wrong side of the vine so to speak. They can get obstructed by leaves and deformed during the blooming process. I get a few like that but I think variations like this are normal in large flower JMGs.

A tip for photographers out there is to scout around for about to open blooms and clear the way for them by pinching leaves or pulling them free from vines that would obstruct them. That helps a little I think.

They all look real nice! I don`t have time to take a count but I`ll try and come back and gather the reports of colors along with mine and post results. I`m very very busy knee deep in pruning everything and have enough tropical leaves and other suitable clippings to start a real nice mulch pile for next year.

All these seeds came from a dark purple blizzard plant making these very interesting results and thanks again to everyone growing these seeds!

I love everyone's pink blooms! GORGEOUS! And yes! I am jealous! I love my purple blooms very much, but was hoping for a pink one, too. I guess I am being a bit greedy, huh? LOL! I bet my "pink" one was the seedling that didn't make it! Ha!

They are all very beautiful and I appreciate it so much Karen that you sent me seeds! Your idea for the container and bamboo teepee turned out great, too! Just another reason I really love MGs!!!!! :-)

Here's my purple for today, the leaves on this vine are all wilted, don't know why.. it is in the same pot with two other Pink flowered vines and they seem fine.

it was almost "1" inch

Here is the pink flowered today, they look neat side by side.. here it is measured.

Will one of you save me some seeds for the Purple blizzard? This vine is really thin looking and I think it got wilt. Here is the purple flower without the ruler.. the buds on the rest of the vine are wilted also, so it doesn't look too good for seed production here for this one.

This is my best one for today!
Sorry, wrong thread! This is not an F1 cross.

Gourd, is this purple blizzard enough? I'm not sure but it might be purple tie-dye...but I'll save seeds.

It looks more blue in the morning when I took the photo, but shifts to purple towards the end of the day.

Only one of my five is setting seeds. It's the vine that puts out the pinkish ones.

Oh Beth, yes, those are great... I'd love a couple of seeds if you happen to get some.

Wow..

Gourd, Sorry your vine is dying. I saw this but haven`t got time to write. Mine have averaged 4-6 in. and appear healthy and they are setting seeds with no trouble.

I`ll come back when I got more time. TTYL, Karen

A - Save me a couple seeds of your Pink Blizzard. I will send you some of my Purple Blizzard seeds too! :-)

Was this one small http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4011993 because the vine was wilted? All I of mine have been large blooms.

Mesilla Park, NM

Alrighty Becky, will save you some Pink Blizzards (already have three seed pods on the pink) save me a couple of yours please., I love the looks of yours. I don't know why the purple is so small, maybe the colder weather at night;, dont' know why one vine would be wilted and not the other two either even though they are in the same pot.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Gourd, I finally got to come back. It sounds like your vine is dying for some reason. Your dying vine will still try to bloom though the flowers will be small.

The flowers toward the end of the vines will normally get a little smaller relative to the first larger 5-6 in blooms at the beginning.

Look down at the bottom of the wilted vine and check the base and the root. A cat urinating in your flowers can kill the vines this way. Check it out and see if you notice anything.

I have lost several vines to tom cats spraying on them in the past. I could tell by the wilted vine, the shriveled base of the vine to the root and of course the smell gave away the cause in this case.

Another time one of my cats killed a whole pot of vines. I saw her peeing in the pot of vines and next thing they are all shriveled and they died. So now I build these cages around the bottom to stop that kind of nonesense. lol

I used the chicken wire to cover my containers in my backyard because the fruit rats were chewing them up. But I also had a problem with the squirrels digging in the containers to bury nuts. The wire stopped all of that and my vines have done quite well. Maybe I shouldn't speak it but ...... I've been rather surprised I have NOT had any bug problems on any of my vines. The worst I have seen is some yellowing and/or wilted leaves from either too much water or not enough, but the rest of the vine bounces back from either situation most quickly! The vines look so fragile but are surprisingly tough!!! I wonder if you grow out the rest of the vine in water. I have one small vine that broke off that has been blooming in water! lol

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

A broken vine will still bloom though very small blooms. A broken vine will try to keep blooming and setting seeds with whatever nourishment and water is left in the plant. Putting the ends of the vine in water helps but to be successful the seeds need to be nearly ripe. Very green pods will not do as well. Karen

Well, that could be a possibility regarding the cat, we have had a white cat with blue eyes that someone dumped in our yard for about a month, it could be that. And we have a hobo cat we brought with us too, he didn't seem to mark anything though, so it could be the other one, I've been trying to tame it, it was asleep in the tree yesterday curled in a little ball. I couldn't coax it down though, these darn dogs scared the heck out of it.

I will go rinse the plant off with water just in case.
