Underwater Gardens #4

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Pepper what are the little round pods in with the marigolds?

Christi - have you received the seeds I sent yet? Surprises are fun! - Just don't know how much sun to give em....ha

No seeds needed for this guy. He has a long probiscus with which he stings his prey and then sucks em up - but the shell is so beautiful you forget how viscious he is. Conus Ammiralis:

Tiger lilies. Orange ones.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

☺ Way Cool! Thank you! Did your pages here just get huge? Mine did, and I can't figure out why....

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Shari, I don't see any difference in my screen so it must be something on your end.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Me, too......everything is the same. Could it be your server?

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I spose....I'll have to ask JB to look at it when he gets home. This is weird. Pictures are HUGE!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Have you inadvertantly changed your display?

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

?? Uh...couldn't tell ya. All the "Explorer" stuff across the top is the same as always. It's just the DG that is big. And I have no idea how to get it back, or what you mean by "display"...I am a computer idgit.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Shari, did the screen size change, or the font size?

If the font size changed, most likely you held the control button down and used the scrolling wheel on your mouse, and just didn't realize it. Sometimes I have to change the font on sites that have itty bitty writing. I like bolder fonts and bigger letters. :-)

I hope this helps.

Janet

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Everything got big...all the stuff that is usually on my screen - is now not...there isn't room. Just tried what you suggested and it worked! Thanks Janet! Cool beans! Now I know how to read the fine print!

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I love that. Use it ALL the time! Especially whenever folks send me links with miniscule print. What WERE they thinking?!?!?!?! I have about 6 pairs of cheater glasses throughout the house. I can't read much of doodly squat without them. Can't write on a straight line without them either. I hate looking at the monitor with them though, so found that trick VERY handy!

I hope all is well in your all's necks of the woods... er... ocean....

Things have calmed down here. Hubby spent almost 3 hours cleaning up the shattered glass from my stove. So we went out to dinner.

I was going to fix Chicken Diane (though I really haven't got a clue how). I had it recently with artichokes and mushrooms and it was tremendously good! I am going to try and duplicate it.... some day when my stove is back together.

If any of you have a good recipe for it, please let me know. I have a craving!

Janet

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

??? What , no not here...tell me where to find out what the heck happened and shattered glass??

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

Good morning all...shattered glass??? was this a stove top that shattered??? are you ok? you've made a post so i assume that your are...how did that happen??

I appreciate all the offers for seeds and plants and stuff. Not sure what I will need yet....i can't do much about replanting until this cast comes off and can use some tools...cast coming off on wednesday and the steel rods taken out...hopefully they wont have to recast me...i will go absolutely mad...(already half mad) time will tell...anyway, thank you all for your kind and most generous offers...I will let you know...seeds can be mailed to me....plants are rather difficult as there is a boat load of red tape for importation of plants...

this is a fairy basslet. it normally hangs out under ledges.... it always orients itself with its belly to the bottom...when they are under a ledge or coral formation etc, they will be upside down as you look at them...it's fun to see hundreds of them all upside down....

As always the colors are so vivid and exciting. Good morning, John. Glad to have your art gracing our pages again. The part about taking out the steel rods does not sound like a fun thing. Told Shari that I have seeds drying presently to send to her.....she couldn't use them all so will be glad to split. Later today I need to separate and make a list so you may know if you are interested. As I have looked over my yarden this week I realize that I have many plants that originated in the tropics. We have the heat in Texas and if I am diligent with the water.....they thrive.....all the while thinking that I am developing native plants. For instance just outside my window are fern, 3 kinds of EE, banana, two ginger, hoja santa, canna, gardenia, hibiscus and more.

Thumbnail by LouC
West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

I would love to see the list Christie!!! What a gorgeous garden you have...thanks for sharing your view with us...One of my problems is that there is virtually no shade here in my yard....not too sure how many of these would do here...The bananas and gingers will do great as I have a couple myself...one of the bananas did not survive Dean, and the ginger needs some help too....I have a plan for an area that I will screen over with 50% screen and many of the mentioned above should do well. I will include some orchids in this area, as well as bird of paradise, heliconea, etc...I will gladly plant whatever I get sent, and can seek advice on where to put them...you could always hand deliver them....we have plenty of room and Cayman Airways flies direct to and from Houston!!! Come on down, the waters fine..for now!!

aurabest,
j

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Now that sounds like a winner! Sure that your view is magnificent. Since I am in the middle of a subdivision, have to create my own view. Right now there must be 50 birds are the feeder and the fountain. Hard to see through two panes of glass and screen but there is a cardinal in feeder and others in the flower bed below.

Christy, Your yarden is wonderful. Looks so inviting.

John, I'm hoping they don't have to recast your hand. Love the blue and gold fish. Such vivid colors!

Shari, your Conus Ammiralis is a handsome fella. Love the geometric patterns.

As for the shattered glass.... I started a thread in the photo forum with photos from the wedding. I told about the shattered cooktop there.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/763839/

I forgot when I mentioned it here that you all might not know what I was talking about.

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

Thanks for that Janet. Sorry to hear about the cooktop disaster...It surely seems to have had no bearing on the wonderful ceremony that took place. The kids look very happy and we wish them all the best!!! Good job! Spaghetti is my all time favorite food!!

j

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks John!

When I was trying to figure out what to feed these folks, the only thing I could come up with that 99% of Americans like.... is spaghetti! It was easy enough to make and fed the crowd very well. I sent bunches of it home with several groups so I didn't get stuck with ALL of the leftovers. Amazing how many noodles 2 large packages of noodles will make! I've never made it on such a grand scale before.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

John, that fairy basslet is beautiful and the idea of seeing a lot of them belly up under a ledge is quite a hillarious mental image for me :~) What is the brown spotted thing behind him? It looks like some sort of fish?

LouC your garden is beautiful! Are your water bills through the roof keeping it so lush and green?

Janet, the wedding looks like it was a truly wonderful experience fo everyone. That Red Velvet with Bavarian Cream filling and Creme Cheese Icing looks Yummmmmy.
I had never seen or heard of a gas stove with a glass top. All that glass had to take forever and a day to clean up. I hope you get your replacement soon.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Things were pretty laid back on the wedding which helped immensely since we had no "rehearsal". Fortunately, Andrew and the Judge went to the exact spot I had envisioned the photos being taken. :-)

I tried both cakes and can vouch for their yumminess! I don't like the real sweet icing that most wedding cakes are made with. We've all always loved red velvet cakes. When the decorator told me there would be filling and then told me what it was... well.... how can you go wrong with that combo!

The punch was very good also. First time I have ever made punch. I'd bought some passion fruit juice earlier in the week and Hillary fell in love with it. I combined one 1/2 gallon of Passion Fruit Juice, one 1/2 gallon of Strawberry Breeze Juice, 1 large tub of Strawberry Sherbet, and 2 cans of 7-Up. Everyone commented on how good that was. What was leftover, I put into a pitcher and drank all day over ice. It was still good leftover!

Janet

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

You're making me hungry.

Zan, Because we had 35 inches of rain in 6 weeks everything is watered clear to China. Just a few things wilt down in the 95+ degrees and I am hand watering....full sprinkler system only once a week. I have found that EE and fern don't need near as much water as something that blooms. The gingers are turning out that way too. The hoja santa is one that droops in the afternoon and then picks up later in the day. You can't hurt canna....except with grasshoppers and they are pretty busy right now. Rather than restrict watering as every other community did last year in the drought, DeSoto raised the rates on a 3 tier basis.....first tier isn't enough to wash the dishes. 2nd and 3rd will punish your wallet really bad should you decide to go there. Then the neighbors shame you for having a green yard when you should be conserving. Tried last spring to go to native Texas plants to because they are mostly drought tolerant. Then we had the moonsoon and killed 'em all by drowning the roots. Can never second guess Mother Nature.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

John, no negative waves now....your thumb will be fine - better than new, no new cast....only positive thoughts!

Christi - How lovely!! Really beautiful! I just want to sit out there amidst your plants and statues and drink in the day....Are those rope lights on your patio? I have rope lights just like those on mine! Love the little guy in the hat - so cute!

Janet - every wedding has to have some glitch, or its not a real wedding. The Red Velvet is one of my favorites, and that sounded soooo good!

Now this pic will probably have to be blown up to be seen, but I thought it was pretty cool. The guy in the dark is a giant moray, and the other guys are White Cheeked Surgeonfish...the dance in a big circle as they swim....don't think I'd want to be that close to the Moray, though!

Thumbnail by Islandshari
Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

eeeewww.....that's the reason I don't like under water. Could look at your and John's pictures til the cows come home...just don't want to be down under myself. Bonified, certified coward. One of the reasons I am so in awe of ya'll. Keep 'em comin'.

Seems I slipped into the local vernacular. ahem.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

That Moray wouldn't hurt you at all Chrissy! They hang out in holes and caves, and unless you stick your hand in there, they wouldn't mess with anything as big as a people type person...especially one from Texas!!

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

Don't make any part of your anatomy look like food, don't wiggle anything that might be sized up as dinner....etc....Moray eels have really poor sight and rely on vibrations to size up what is in front of them...a human hand is approximately the same size as a Blue Tang, Doctorfish, the above pictured Surgeonfish...if it wiggles in front of the 2 sensors on the top of their mouth..well...lots of really sharp teeth, all pointing slightly backwards...lightning fast striking ability, you will only do this once.....on the positive side...once they realise that you are entirely too big to swallow whole, they will release their grip and you can bleed your way back to the surface!!!

this is a viper moray with a red banded coral shrimp....

Good point John...I tend to forget things like that, cuz its second nature - ya know? I am so glad you post your pictures...so much clearer and closer than we can get! Just love to look at them. Your Viper looks meaner than our Morays!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

John, that was an awful lot of detail that usually comes from personal experience....sure hope that is not the case with you but someone told you. Thinking of you and Kate. Would expect that you are more than tired after this past weeks excitement. Got your home back in order?

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

Shari, the moray in your shot looks like our green moray. we have a number of different species here, spotted, gold spot, viper, green...do you kids get wolf's there???

Christi, I can thankfully say that I know this information from watching them hunt and feed, as well as being informed when someone gives a dive briefing and explains what might be seen on a particular dive...

as far as the house goes, we're getting there...leaving the shutters up, blocks and sandbags in one location, my friend helped move the beer fridge back to the den....we had a closer look at plant damage... the thryallis is toast! not salt spray tolerant at all...the silver buttonwoods however, look as though I fertilized them!!!

j

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Salt spray was not something I had a clue about. Will go to plant files to see what the two are that you mention. Over my head. Very glad to know that you haven't had personal experience with the moray. After a storm such as Dean, does everyone pretty much go back to business as usual. Obviously it causes you to stay on your toes.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

It self-seeds (alot) and cuttings may be taken in the summer.

John, just found this in the PlantFiles. Maybe you will have lots of seedling sprout. Does report that only fault is being rather brittle. Hopefully the roots aren't dead.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Hi everyone! ChristiLou....which one were you looking up? The thryallis or the buttonwoods? I couldn't tell. John, I had never seen a wolf so asked JB, and he hadn't either...don't know if they are not out here, or if we just haven't seen them. Can't even find a picture, but didn't you post one a while back? I'll have to go through the threads again...a mind is a terrible thing to lose.
Anyway, I thought I would post some little cuties to get the vision of an eel that looks like a wolf out of my mind....whoosh, scary in there! Here are some a couple of three-band anemonefish checking out the big guy with the camera.

Thumbnail by Islandshari
West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

No, not of a wolf eel...none found in Cayman waters....this gold spot came out of the sand while I was swimming over the top of him...shot on film a few years back...Nikonos5 with a framer...he disappeared back into the sand and left no trace of where he went...really kind of amazing...

Thumbnail by caribblue
West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

sorry i cut his nose off...as stated...shot on film and only had 2 chances at him before he disappeared before my eyes...on a solo dive...pictures are the only way to prove it!!

Thumbnail by caribblue
Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I have a promise from JB to try to get a good pic on his next dive out to this particular spot...we call these gold spots "garden eels"...there will be hundreds of them sticking straight up out of the sand, like leafless flower stalks....then you swim over and shwoosh they are gone super fast. You are so lucky to have gotten that pic - although I'm sure luck had very little to do with it. Do they gather like this out there? It's really amazing to see!

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

Shari, Garden eels are completely different than Gold Spot eels. Garden eels are about the size of a pencil but longer...this gold spot pictured about is about 2 feet long and a couple of inches around....Garden eels are hard to shoot as JB is finding out....

edited to add that garden eels are dark brown to black in color, obviously the gold spot eel is not..

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the correction. My marine biology leaves much to be desired. But, the garden eels out here are nearly white - very lite tan and they have spots....not many - not like your
gold spots - but a few. Must be a different kind, and yep - skinny as a pencil! JB has tried a few times, but they blend with the sand so well, that they don't show up in the pic very well. We'll keep trying. Your Gold Spot is another amazing picture!

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

Thanks kiddo!! yeah, I have tried so many times to get a decent shot of garden eels and they hide when you get close, and , if you hang out and wait for them to re-emerge, you will run out of air before you see them...garden eels resemble turtle grass swaying with the currents...

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

They are really cool, that's for sure!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Been to a play and to eat flounder. Glad to see you are doing the underwater scenes.
Great!
