Candyce, i'm glad I only put 5 in that one. What would she do if I sent her one of my disk packed full of them???
What's blooming today? #9
Yes and Kass should stop holding back her enthusiasm.
ah, I am no sissy... I am girly girl!!!! (imagine me saying that with Arnold Schwarzenegger' accent!!!!)
looooooooveeeeeeee pretty flowers!!!!!!
Candyce...The old border carnation I'm growing, Dianthus carophyllus, was a snap to germinate. Took about a week at room termperature. Haven't tried D. plumarius, D. chinensis and others so I don't know about them.
Dave47...I would like to think I did something special to archieve 100% germination but I'm convinced Thompson & Morgan is to blame. Even with their common cultivars I've had exceptional germination. This carnation is one of their spotlighted flowers and they apparently take good care to see it germinates (at almost $5 for 20 seeds, they should).
Pixie, you are truly a woman of many beauties!! Can you help me out with the names of a few of my dayliliies? I went out just after the rain and got a few shots of those blooming today. All three are of the hemerocallis unknownus variety:
The first one is my "sisterfest" daylily from a western NC nursery. My 2 sisters and I had gotten together for a "sisterfest weekend" a couple years ago (no spouse or progeny allowed.......just us sisters). I bought a fat clump of this, split it up 3 ways and each of us took a clump to remember that year's sisterfest.
Kassia -.your enthusiasm brings many smiles.....Don't even think of reigning it in.....that's the best of what gardens do for us all.............RIGHT, VICTOR?????? :) And Victor... don't YOU ever stop zinging your punch lines either!!
Candyce........For sure.........where the heck is Munsonville? Can you tell I never get off this hill much????
Donnie... thanks.... I can't stop being who I am... it's too much work to pretend to be something I am not.... I am very passionate about life and the things I like..and gardening is bringing so much joy!!!!
and the other thing is I am over 40! so I have earned all my gray hair, and I am very comfortable in my own skin ... so what you hear is what you really get!!!! lol!!!! no kidding! and I better be all happy and enthusiastic because the pretty flowers will go to bed in a couple of months!!!!!!!!!!!!
like I tell my little nephew Victor - let's go outside and garden because winter is coming!!!!!! run Victor run!!!!! We only have 2 more months and comes the cold and your mom will not let me get you all dirty and wet!!!!"
Kassia:
I absolutely LOVE your enthusiasm. I hope you realize that I was just poking fun at you this morning, after all, it was too wet outside to go and poke at some dirt!!
Louise:
Munsonville is up at the top of another hill ...
Take Rte 9 like you are going to Concord, and there I am ... about 11 miles northeast of Keene. I certainly know a lot about where you live, as I used to live in Swanzey for most of my life. My DDH used to hunt deer all over your town. How far away from '4 Corners' are you?
David Paul:
Those carnations are annuals, right? Or are they perennials in your Zone? In my Zone, I believe they would be so dead!! But, if they are annuals, I might consider growing them, as my two favorite flowers are daisies and carnations.
Candyce...they are perennials: Thompson & Morgan's "Fenbow Nutmeg Clove". Seems to be an "On and Off Again" cultivar. Bought one package of seeds in Feb and when I went to get another, they were sold out. Then they had them in July. Now the cultivar is not on the T&M American website but is available in the UK.
The print catalog says:
"Zone 3-8"
"An old fashioned garden carnation with a unique and exquisite perfume. Semi-double...Ideal for borders, containers or as a cut flower"
Cultivar has an interesting history. Found on the estate of a Colonel Fenbow in the UK in the 1960s. Family has records of it going back to the 17th century. It was used to flavor and color wine (Chaucer and Shakespeare referred to this type of carnation as "sops in wine"). It was also candied.
Photo of the plant not in bloom is in plant files here:

Hopefully, in a few weeks, I'll be able to add photos of the flowers.
Debby - I forgot to add before....I love your pic of your mums....they are really pretty. I don't see mine anywhere here......they must have been lost over the winter. Sniff!
David - Hang in there with your dahlias. Have you grown them before?
Pixie - I like the upper right lily and the upper left blue flower.
Donnie - I can't help you with your ID's. The red and yellow one is nice though.
lol... of course Candyce!!!!! some people have asked me if I taking anything to be so happy and enthusiastic about gardening...lol... and I just say I am intoxicated by beauty!!!!
First time with Dahlias, BigCityAl. Plants look great. Just no blossoms. have them on a triangle with pavement on both sides so I hope the heat from the asphalt keeps them going a little longer (one at the tip of the area is stunted, I suspect the heat is responsible for that, maybe it will take off as it cools). Last year strawflowers in the same spot hung in a month past everything else.
If nothing else, I guess I'll have nice tubers for next year. Do they usually keep OK?
Just realized that this thread was not popping up on my thread watcher because I haven't posted anything lately *lol*
I have been lurking but feel like I'm missing out on the party.
Been "one of those weeks". Our cat has been missing for 8 days....stories of coyotes in the area and already know many fox like it out here in the sticks. So..... needless to say....Jessie (13 1/2) has been quite heartbroken and I've been busy trying to ease her pain as much as possible.
Starting to cut stalks off daylilies I didn't cross (this was my first year to try to cross daylilies) as they are beginning to wind down a little.
BUT....have LOTS of stalks that look like this!!!!! :) *happy, chubby dance* :)
Al, what are some good single Dahlias? (I'm not looking for a date.)
Oh that's terrible news Kim. Hope you find him / her. I'm a cat person.
David - they store pretty good. A steady 40-50 degrees is ideal.
Victor - I only have Northwest Cosmos as a single right now - it's good. I know the Juul's always rate good. Here are some, S = single in dahliaspeak.

Kim - The torenia and dianthus are really sharp. Best of luck with your cat and safe return.
Kim, he's beautiful!! I'm so sorry he's missing, hope he comes back soon. Have you checked with the humane society in your area??
Romeo went missing for 3 days once and I was worried sick, so I know what you are going through.
Thanks Al.
Celeste,
Jess called the Kennebunk Shelter twice and Josh took her down there to "walk around" to see if he was there. No such luck. Kazz never went far. Was always with me no matter where I went, right on my heels like a dog and he KNEW his surroundings so I know in my heart something has happened to him.
Al,
Thank you so much for the compliment on the Dianthus & Torenia. These are both new to me this year and I plan to save plenty of seed as I am really enjoying them. Didn't realize how much I actually liked annuals :) Learning something new every year and luvin' it :)
Plan to go out and get a night shot of a couple things tonight :)
Beautiful cat Kim. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Kim - so sorry to hear that your pretty cat is missing. How terribly painful for you all.
Oh my so sorry to hear about your kitty. Hope he comes back. Very hard to deal with a situation like this yourself never mind trying to explain it to your children. Hoping for the best.
Thank you all so much for your well wishes. Couple times today my eyes tricked me into thinking I saw the white glimpse of him. Had kept my hopes up for his return but realized today that he's not coming back and cried for the first time. Guess I hadn't thought about just how much I missed him out there in the garden with me always there when I turned around. I'm not really an animal person but he was truly a good boy.
Kim:
I'll help you keep the faith. I once had a cat do the same thing. She was gone for a month, for crying out loud!! I wanted to throttle her when she returned home, but all I did was sit down with her and cry my eyes out!
Candyce....that's amazing! A whole month! SO GLAD she came home to you.
Sorry, folks but I think my Kazz post took us off the "What's Blooming Today" Subject. Please accept my apologies.
Here's a night shot of my Oriental Lilies blooming today. I am really enjoying the lilies this year. I have 1 type of Trumpet, 1 type of Oriental and 1 type of Asiatic and realized after much reading that it doesn't set seed without having another variety to cross with. All this time I have been dabbing them with their own pollen thinking what beautiful seeds I was making *lol*.....NOT.
