What's blooming today? #9

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Wow, Pixie, as usual, your pics just blow me away. I lost my Party Girl. I thought it was too cold here for it, but you are even further north....not sure what happened to it now.

My heliopsis are now in full bloom and the monarda are beginning to go by. The BE Susans are at their peak here now. DLs and Hosta are also done, except for one low growing late DL that is a pretty deep orange and light gold. The helianthus are looking better this year....no black spots all over the leaves. Squirrels are starting to run off with the apples and my new turtlehead is about to bloom. No pics today.

Kassia - just saw your posting - If you deadhead the stellas, they will keep on blooming for awhile.......

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

A question about using the cornmeal ....
wouldn't cornmeal attract the squirrels and chipmunks?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Louise - a Sharpie is a magic marker. Celeste - great photos as always. When do your DL's finally stop? September? I'm not so sure about that dead heading Stellas will bring more blooms at this point. There must be new scapes with unopened flowers. No scapes, no flowers, I thought. Celeste, or other DL enthusiasts, can correct me if that's wrong.

I lost my Party Girl too. Been searching for about 20 years now.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

That tip of corn meal is new to me too. I have heard of diluted milk solution for mildew but not for blackspot. This year seems to be worse than the last few for the ugly fungus. I figure some I can stand but when the leaves all look like a sharpie was used on them, yuck. Some roses do much better than others so I'm trying to find the best ones with the flowers I like to plant here. Most of the naked bushes are getting new foliage. Hope they stay green for a while.

More great pics Pixie. Like your new one with the mixed up tag.

The more humid and rainy the Summer is, the worse it will be. I would ask on the Rose forum - especially gardeners in the humid areas like the South. They should know what really is resistant. Shrub roses are supposed to be. Some of the new hybrids as well - Knockout and some of the other allegedly low / no maintence ones. The correct placement makes a huge difference as well. They must get lots of air movement. Too many people put them too close to the house.

I am guessing some of you might enjoy my doggie story

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks

Nice Debby - aren't you rushing the season though.LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm not a mums fan but that one is a nice color.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Al square cosmos is very odd but I like it. That dahlia is a big fat wow! So perfect it almost doesn't look real.Just amazing flowers.

Onewish your doggies are too adorable. I bet they give you a lot of laughs. Thanks for sharing them. :)

dp those mums are beautiful. I love the color. Mine have slowed down with all this heat and humidity, a couple blooming and loads of buds. I am looking forward to fall now. Cool dry air and bright blue skies with asters and mums blooming ...ahhhhhh.

And these pretty tiny blue joys that have taken up residence with my alyssum. Does anyone know what they are called?

Andy and Al, I apologize in advance for the photo quality. I must have breathed in when I should have breathed out.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Nice lilies Candyce. Sorry about being hard on you about the photos - I take plenty of bad ones.

Sonny boy wanted to help garden tonight - deadheading.

I'll vouch for Al taking some bad photos - and he uses editing software! Hee hee. Hey Al, didn't sonny boy earn his own crocs?!! Nice shot. My hair was bleach blonde like that when I was young. Now I'd settle for astroturf.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Candyce I believe your blue flowers are lobelia.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I agree.

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

Al, this is a little more seasonal. I hate to rush the autumn weather as well

Nice Debby. Are those the Mums in the background?

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

Yes Victor it is. You guys have quite the eye!!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Looks good to me Debby. Honey bees are my friends as with bumbles - the rest well maybe not.

Victor - You know he wore my crocs last year and we offered him his own and he got sandals instead - kids!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

ngam there is one entire thread about the corn meal.... I used it... the only thing I complained is that I had to get so much because I have tons of roses!!!!! really worked well but I stopped doing it when I got no black spot... them they I waited too long to start again.. I am a banana head!!!!

I'm still looking for a dahlia in bloom.

A vendor messed up and I wasn't able to put them in until June 12th. I guess I'll have blooms this year, the plants look good. A disappointment as I've seen all your great photos and reserved the best spot in the yard for them.

Also waiting on carnations. These are no-one's fault. They may bloom the first year the vendor says. Got 100% germination on 20 rather pricey seeds I started in March. One of the plants tossed up some nice stems with buds two weeks ago but there they perch--unopened. We shall see what happens.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Wow David! 100%, that is amazing!

Maybe next year you can improve on that. ;^)

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Ohmigosh! You guys are so funny.

I'm a bit too aged for Lamaze, although the technique does come in handy while taking photos ...

Thanks for IDing my Lobelia. It's so small and dainty. I'll have to do some research on that and see if I want it for another spot next year.

Wow, David! 100% germination but no blooms yet. I can sure identify! One question for you ... how easy are carnations to germinate?

Everyone else ... great, fabulous photos!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Nice pics everyone. Al, that dahlia really does pop!! And it is good to see that you are getting Sonny boy started off on the right track with his deadheading skills.

It's a cool, rainy morning here on the hill........Molly is snoring up a storm on the floor beside me.....no gardening this morning....good to be able to enjoy it vicariously through your postings! Happy Friday everyone!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Louise:

Yeah, it's raining here, too. I had though that it would hold off until this afternoon. But alas, it has not. So, there's no early morning communing for me either.

One of these days we will have to get together.

Wow Celeste, that's a new one for you! Nice shots. Is that Gooseneck Loosestrife? Not invasive for you?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

It is Gooseneck Loosestrife, doesn't seem to be...have only had it for 2 years. It seems content along the woodline and hasn't ventured out onto the lawn yet, but i'll be watching it!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Look for red colored roots just under the soil.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)
