I think I'm going to lose my Brugs! What am I doing wrong?

Tampa, FL(Zone 9b)

Yes exactly. I clipped off all the dried ends.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

update on my NOID... the tendrils and the very end are sticking out of two.... pics tomorrow

When you smell that first bloom on that brug, you will get your reward for all that hard work. The smell is just intoxicating. I have some cuttings I took in Wauchula, Florida and I just had the first bloom. It was wonderful..

My neighbors think I'm nuts. Once it gets dark and the scent gets really heady, I'm out there at every commercial getting a good "snort". It's intoxicating and I want to drink up every last scent before the season is over and I have to wait another year for fix!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

lol thats too funny!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I always sniff it up s l o w and really breathe deep, I want to savor it while I can, call my daughter out and we smell together! I even recall it during winter, someone should make a room spray or something. Trenton, you just wait until you get to tantilize your sense of smell with the heady, sweet citrusy scents, you'll know what we mean, then... You are a little tease! "pics tomorrow" ! I just KNEW you were posting pics when I saw Amanda's "temporarily high-jacked" thread pop up in my watcher! lol But, no, just a small morsel offered to us.. I hope you're offering it words of encouragement, it's Tuesday and we were afraid you would miss the delivery over the week end! What's takin so long?

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

aah idk... its really cool here only the 60s at night, so idk... next week will be normal sooo...

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Try squeezing it.

NO! just kidding! I was looking at Tussiemussie's gorgeous white blooms, I'll try to be more patient for yours.

Good Morning!!! "Funny" but, somewhat sad, brug flower story: my next door neighbor has a NOID brug that I gave her...she doesn't take real good care of it but was overjoyed when she saw a peach flower on it (almost the same length as the brug!) and was overwhelmed by the fragrance it emitted. Well, her sister was over and Heidi goes "...LOOK at my flower!!!..." and she said she tilted the flower up and it snapped right off the brug!!! She tried to save the bloom by putting it in water but it didn't survive...I never even got to see it, or smell it, but told her that she should (hopefully) get more flowers. She's not very good at keeping it watered and fed---brug abuser!!!

Another person I gave a rooted NOID brug cutting to (he and his wife camp where we do) keeps me updated weekly on his brug's growth...he's a good brug daddy and his is really growing well. He's on "Brug Bloom Bud" watch and, when he and his wife are gone (camping) for the weekend, his Mom will go to their house to make sure the brug isn't dry or to see if the bloom opened yet. He even noticed/mentioned how the leaves will point upward at nighttime...now that is a bonafide addicted bruggie!!!

It is soooo neat to share the BRUG PASSION!!!

Just "ME"...Jan

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh Jan! I love stories like that! Especially the daddy one! My friend that helps me so much outide, well, I kinda turned him into a plant junkie... he likes the blooms okay, but he doesn't have brugs cause he thinks the foliage is ugly!!! Now have you ever heard the likes of that!? Foliage is PART of the beauty! It's what we look at the most.... waiting for those blooms! They are very forgiving plants and once established, they have a true desire to live, even through neglect. Now that the lady in your first story has smelled the intoxicating scent she will be more attentive...

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Well then I'm guessing you love my little noviceness then, too!! Lol!! Oh my - it's sooooooo much fun being the reason your Brug is putting out TONS of STUNNING blooms!! I'm soooo inlove with these things and you guys on here are not helping me keep my yard neat and tidy!! I want more and more and more and more and more!!!!!!!!! :)

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Perhaps your friend should get a Peaches 'n' Cream? The variegated foliage on that one is especially attractive!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Sequee, I do have a Maya, and I've successfully rooted a couple cuttings from a trim this spring... He does like the variegated ones, but said he doesn't want the "plain" ones... The rootlings will grow in my living area this winter. I'm keeping 1 and 1 will be potted up nicely and given to him in Spring. I give him stuff all the time and somehow, it ends up back at my place ?....... he gets discouraged when his doesn't grow exactly like mine...... I explain that it is different light/moisture conditions and that I do have about 25 years more experience growing things than he does... He'll come over with the latest plant magazine and tell me I need to try something.... I say, Where would I put it? Why do I want it? I don't even think it's very pretty and it's very high maintenance.... he just grins and says... "Well if it works for you, I want to get one"... He went to school with my girls (they are all 25-30 now) and is like a 2nd son.

AuntB - PHILO UPDATE!!

I purchased some hibiscus from Robert and I've got the perfect place for them in front of my house - with the Philo! So I dragged my hubby outside yesterday night (at like 11:30 pm, LOL!) and ran my idea passed him. He seemed to like it, so I guess we could have this thing moved soon!!! We mgiht wait another few weeks though, just so that the climate is a bit cooler and the Philo will adjust better to this 2nd transplant this year.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

OH Amanda! Look at all the brug enjoyment you are getting! Blooms from BOTH! (Yes, hibiscus.... can't get enough, either) That little scar? You can hardly see it... The plant looks so healthy and is very nice form, too! They were just hungry! I had compared from the pic you posted the 14th and today and, you've done wonderfully, isn't it fun to get that kind of response for your efforts? Actually, I was starting to LIKE the philo with the brugs next to it! LOL - I'd wait for more favorable weather to move it, too. I still think you're going to need a BIGGER yard! Wait until your little girl develops her plant interests in a couple years.... might be something to consider for the long range! Thanks for being such a good sport with my teasing... Those blooms are just gorgeous! I can almost smell em thru my monitor!

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Amanda---

BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS and color!!! Hey, let me know when you get my "surprise" package I sent you on Tuesday (the 18th)...

Happy Gardening!!!
Jan

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Ha ha, AuntB - you're cracking me up!! Well, I think when the Angel Trumpets get large (they tend to in this area from a few that I've seen), having a Philo in front of them could get pretty crowded-looking. So I think you were right and I've ran with the idea of moving it! :) Will post pics after we do, of course. :)

Thanks, Jan!! I can't wait for the package!!! That was sooooooo sweet of you!!

normal weather now mid-upper 80's as highs and mid 70's as lows with rain every day! blooms should be opened by tonight or tomorrow. ill take pics in a bit, cuz i got some eggs, bacon, biscuits, and a nice VA country ham callin my name!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

TL, I can smell that southern breakfast clear up here! Biscuits? bacon AND ham??? You lucky young man! (wish I was smelling your new bloom) ;oP Your brug is certainly taking it's own sweet time! You keep telling us "in a couple days"...... EVERYBODY, PUSH!! Anybody have any new blooms to look at?? Amanda? Jan? Sequee? ZZ, Yardqueen? Anyone? My Maya is so loaded with buds and blooms, I'm afraid some branches might break if we get rain and wind... I've been snapping pics like it's a newly crowned beauty queen! The blooms started turning color this morning.. The branches are hanging down so much, it really looks kind of goofy.... I should down-load my camera & post a couple, so we can have SOMETHING to look at while we impatiently wait on TL.... WHO is pigging out at the breakfast bar, and NOT outside talking to his buds! lol Have a wonderful day. :) pancakes? french toast?

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Min are coming along! I'll post pics as soon as I get more blooms. :)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

I just read this whole thread through. I picked up several tips. But mostly I laughed my way through the thread at Amanda's OOooooooooooos and AAAaaaaaahhhhhhhhhs and other assorted squeals. My brugs are doing better this year too. I think the answer is just much more attention i.e. lime & fertilizer. I can only grow them one year, because I have hard freezes here. I take cuttings of the ones I like the best and then grow them in water awhile until they form lots of roots. Then I pot them and hold them over in my tiny greenhouse..
One of mine has 60 buds right now. Another 30, and another about 20. One only has about 8 buds but it is in the most shade.. I am going to plant all of them where the one with 60 buds is next year.
Amanda, someone posted that mixed a gallon of water with some fish emulsion, kelp, and molasses and I think that is a good supplement. Others use the Bayer's 2-in-1 fertilizer, orignially for roses, but now they claim for all blooming plants. it has a systemic insecticide in it so i don't get bugs on my brugs. And yes, I throw some bloom booster at it too. LOL, it seems all brug growers have their own formula but mostly they use a LOT of everything.

You talkin' DG's MySharona? or is there a brug MySharona? I'm going to search for the post. Sounds like you have your brug "formula" down, Woodspirit! got any pics? OH MY! TL - I predict fully open tomorrow! I just love it when they start unfurling! (Amanda, nothings wrong with you that's not wrong with the rest of us!)
