I think I'm going to lose my Brugs! What am I doing wrong?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Yes, of course! (haven't even checked out the link, yet) See, I have a problem! LOL Oh, I long to smell brug blooms again, (see, Amanda, I'm envious of you out there sniffing up the sweet scent!) I did notice this morning I have 4 with tiny little ocra's forming! Yes, I'm expecting quads! haha

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

i never have smelled a brug up close... oh well. there was one growing on the grounds of the SC statehouse, but i moved away from the midlands, so i havent been back for a while. are you saying that yours dont come back the next year after you over winter them?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh, yes, they come back, well, I try to keep them alive and not growing in the basement, just above being dormant, they are all in pots, except one, and I'm experimenting with it this winter -leaving it in the ground and mulching heavily and laying trash bags of leaves on top.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

diehrd, I meant to tell you I like the angle to took the pic in the one about the bloom pic, very cool!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

of the buttonbush? what do you mean?

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

*Pacing, waiting for Amanda's next picture*

Diehard, is it a relation to the bottlebrush? Here's mine.

diehrd, it's the pic of the top of your brug, like you were looking down on it, cool! Teresa, that is so pretty! My cousin in Miami has them all over his neighborhood, so pretty! Yes, Amanda? She's probably busy with her human baby OR helping that great hubby of hers, move the philo! LOL

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

oh yeah... thanks, i thought i'd just show all angles!

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Ahem! (clearing my throat) AMANDA! I need to see it! ;-)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Patience, Teresa...... tehe

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah where is she? we've gotten way off topic... i have a tendency to do that to most conversations!

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Oooooooooooooooooooooooh pretty pics, guys!! Let me go outside really quick and see if I can get one now. It's been raining here ALL DAY and we had our 5-eayrs old neice here yesterday afternoon and she spent the night last night and JUST went home. She's adorable but WOW, a handful!! Now let me see about those pics ...

You guys are cracking me up!!! You know my nose is orange from all of the sniffing! I did go outside earlier and noticed the flower getting a little soft. Is that normal? Or course, it's been very hot here.

I'm not sure it's changed colors though - maybe tonight's pics will show the coloring better. I did notice the pics I was taking during the day (posted previously) were showing up lighter than in reality. Don't you just love that? ;) Getting my rain boots on, ha!! Jk ... be back shortly ...

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

MAJESTIC ECSTACY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HERE IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YEAH, you guys are so right - this thing smells INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it's gotten even bigger! And the flower is not soft at all - it feels just right and has a great form!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm soooo glad to be a Brug Mommy!!!! Here's a closeup of the underside. What's that called?

You guys really have to forgive the fuzziness ... with all of the rain and living so close to the Gulf of Mexico, it's still VERY humid out here. ARGH!!

So AuntB - still thinking Dr. Suess? Any way for me to be 100% sure?

(This is from when I first went out - before I pulled the bloom more out for the pics)

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Oops!! I got so excited, I forgot to add the pic!!!!!!!!!!

And another ...

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Here's the whole thing ... I'm guiltily showing you this one, AuntB!! Grrrrrrrrrr ... we had sooooo much going on today that I couldn't even think about asking him to move it, or even trying myself! We had ALL of the inlaws over for dinner. My hubby smoked some sausage and Chicken breast on the smoker, we made twice-baked potatoes and corn on the cob, had Mac n Cheese for the kiddos and LOTS of desert. Between preparing all of that and chasing a 5-year old down, AND watching the rain, we didn't get it done. GRRRRRR!!! Will I EVER!?!?!?

I didn't even SEE this little anooying critter!! Why do they have to be the same color as the leaves?!?! Why didn't I see him and kill him? This same little guy's been eating on this Brug for the last few weeks and I haven't been able to get rid of him. He just gets away too quickly.

Oh wow Amanda..she is beautiful.

I have one of those "litter picker upper" squeeze handle thing with prongs at the end to reach stuff? They are absolutely priceless for picking those off leaves.. You don't scare them off cause it's so wide.. then just get it level with the bug and SQUEEZE the handle.. You'll get em first time, every time. I get at least one a day! I hate em, cause when your bud searching... they are sitting there lookin you eye to eye.. Makes me say bad words every time. LOL

Back to your bloom... I love the orange.. I am dreaming of the fragrance here!

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

This is my other Brug. Should be the same cultivar, but it's a little too dhort for blooms right now. Anyone know why the leaves are all standing straight up on these tonight? Do they do that at night?

Thumbnail by AmandaTaylor7
Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, ZZ!! Where do I get something like that? And do you have a pic so I'll konw what to get?

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Amanda! She's absolutely amazing! Such a fantastic colour! I LOVE IT!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

sssshhhh! amanda they're sleeping... that is what they do at night! your brug is even more beautiful than last time!
ZZ, what you said about the katydids is too funny!!!! i was cracking up envisioning me doing that!!! i usually catch them w/ the pruners and cut them in half... its fun!

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Ha ha ha ... ok!! I'll be quite now!! Tip-toe, tip-toe, tip-toe! ;)

Isn't a Brug in bloom so much prettier than one that isn't? I can't believe the transformation since I started this thread!!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yes you are right... now as for mine, the blooms are still small little okras on the plant. one day they'll be like yours!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

OH MY!!!! It is Gorgeous! Good job, Amanda! The leaves do kind of point up at night sometimes, I think mine do that when it's so unbearably hot out, since our temps have cooled a bit, I haven't noticed them doing that. Amanda, I'm not pressuring you about the philo, you know that. What a fun weekend you had. Mmmmmmm, your food sounds yummy. We had our annual Labor Day Rodeo in my small town... I don't go, I used to, but it's too hot for me on the bleachers. I did help a friend in his bar Saturday night with the rodeo crowd.... The Buffalo Inn, it's been in our town forever. Nothing special, but a place to have a cool one, if that's what you like. Had my Mom & step-dad over for burgers last eve.
Now back to this glorious brug.... There is no way you can be sure of it's name. We can guess, but there's no way to know for sure. If they weren't named when you got them, they will be an unknown, or whatever you call it for your personal identification....like "Amanda's Awesome Orange One". If you can remember or research to find out what kind they offered you on ebay, we could confirm that it IS what they said it was. It has great color, but it will be getting limp and turn brown, soon, especially if it is very hot (just don't want you to be devastated when you see it getting wimpy). But, there will be more blooms and then in multiples at once and you will have to have other color brugs, and you are definately hooked... Welcome, we are here to enable you and provide cuttings and info to feed your addiction! I was noticing the transformation, too! That is funny about the "picker-upper tool" ZZ, your description reminds me of those toys with the alligator head and when you squeeze the handle it opens it's mouth. We can't get all the bugs, I spray a mixture of 1 part peroxide with 3 parts water and a drop or 2 of regular dishwashing liquid (not anti-bacterial), after the sun is off them in the evening when it's cooler, on the underside of the leaves, too. I don't mind sharing them with the insects, as long as they aren't gorging themselves. If you see big holes or portions of leaves stripped, check for those green horned tomato worms.... but, they do turn into a brug natural pollinator when they morph from the eating machine to a flying moth.... Good Job! Here is a transformed brug pest.

diehrd, we want bud swelling updates on your little okras, too! (Sorry I'm so long-winded this morning) Look at how many people have viewed this thread! - it's sure to be over 1500 before the end of the day! (lot's of lurkers' out there, lol)

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, AuntB!! Oh gosh, I know you're not pushing me! But geez, I was soooo disappointed that all that happened where I couldn't move the Philo. I mean, what a perfect weeken to do it, too!! BTW, when I do, do you think it will go into shock again or no since I'm keeping it in the same yard?

GORGEOUS moth pic!! And yes, I wanna see diehrd's pics, too!!

And AuntB, you were right - I went out this morning to see little brown specks on the curving points of the "petals." But I mean hey, it's been HOT here! We've been hitting 3 digits!

If this is a Dr. Seuss, will I get year-round blooms?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I'm not sure, about the philo or about the brug blooming all year. I think the philo will be mad at you, again, try to give it exact light/moisture as it's getting now and maybe it won't notice..... I would wait until it is not so hot, though (can you believe I said wait?) lol And, I THINK the brug would bloom all year if your temps don't dip below 70 degrees or so at night. I'm not an expert, just an experience-sharing learner. :) You need a rest today, sounds like a fun weekend.

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh ... hummm ... so I'm guessnig that maybe October would be a better time to move it then? Should work, should work.

Well, our late night temps do get to the 30s and 40s sometimes in like January-February, but daytime temps usually are never colder than in the mid 40s, and are rearely that cold. But then it gets warm again at the end of February. We have about 4-6 weeks of winter here, and with never any snow (EXCEPZT for Christmas Eve 2004). So I guess we'll see how this one fares. :)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Remember to keep your blankets and Christmas lights available during that time, 30 degrees would knock the whole plant to the ground, without protection, then you'd have a slimy mess when it thawed out. It would come back from the roots, but then have to put on all the growth and "Y" off to bloom again. What do philos do with 30 degree temps? It's interesting to learn about growing habits outside my zone.

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Ha ha, well, here, the Philos are pretty hardy. They can even take full sun in 100 degree temps without showing stress. Good tip on the lights and blankets.

On another note - remember me asking about the stake on the Brug? Well, I took it off this morning and the thing fell over!! It did find until pouring rain came so now it's staked again. I hope I haven't hurt it. I think I'll leave it staked until it's got a woody trunk that can support it.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah the philodendron is real hardy here too. i'll go out and check th brug... i dint expect too much change. i'm gonna try the christmas lights (gasp! i just said christmas OH NO!) i heard of that a while ago... never tried it... we grow our brugs up from the roots each year... or at lest expect to so we wont be too disappointed. Now to see about the okras...

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

OMG!! Amanda! I'M SOOOOO sorry! :( I feel terrible!!!:((( It looked so sturdy! waaaaaaaaaa Did it bend or break? sniff sniff At the "towel line" or the soil line? Arggggghhhhhhhh!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I'm waiting on little okra, too. But I know what color I'll be seeing! It's been hot down south, they will progress faster than you think, diehrd! I feel so bad about Amanda's brug... Amanda, leave the philo, too! lol Don't listen to me.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I hope your not getting too much rain Amanda! Do let us know..

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Ha ha, oh AuntB - you didn't do anything wrong! I thought I would just try it without the stake to see what happened and well, it let me know that was not good! :)

But the Brug is FINE!! That's the best part! Another bloom is birthing right now!! It had just bent way over backwards, but I restaked it a few horus later (when the rain stopped) and this morning it seems to have put on a whole inch more of growth. I'd also staked the one on the right a few days ago and it's been growing a lot quicker, too. So ... ? I think the stakes might be great for growing them quicker but they tend to be reliant on them. Nto sure how to break them of that reliance? But I do remember my Brugs stood fine on their own without the stakes but after adding the stakes, the growth went like crazy so ... ? Aaaah, I guess I'll just have to play with it!! Maybe wait until the trunks are more woody, you think?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Or maybe build the soil level up further on the trunk? Did it "bend" at soil level or where you had the towel?

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

No ... it bent below the towel but about a foot and a half above the ground. It didn't do a sharp bend - just the whole thing kind of arched over?
