I think I'm going to lose my Brugs! What am I doing wrong?

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Hello again Amanda!...and, AuntB, that's exactly what I was trying to say! A lot of my gardening is done with plants in nursery pots---that way if a plant is done blooming or isn't happy with where it's placed in the garden I can switch pots/plants around. Plus, I'm in a zone where I have to overwinter my tropicals inside so it's easier to keep them in the pots. Because this is my first brug growing year I opted for "height" by trimming off the bottom growth, but I do like the bushiness idea also (and, more blooms...!).

Jan

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Oooooh, I agree with you guys. And I think I need more Brugs to keep me occupied, although I've NO idea where I'll put them!

I'll keep trimming up the trunk too because I want it to be tree-like. Hopefully, mine will look like this someday ... this is what I want!!! (Not my image, it's from a Googled search on Angel Trumpets)

BTW - anyone know how long it will take for mine to get like this?

And another pic - this is by far the most beautiful tree ever ...

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

OH MY, Amanda, I WANT one like that too!!! I betcha that brug has way more blooms than it has leaves...I just "borrowed" the pic that you "borrowed" and set it as my screensaver!!! I'm gonna try to save as much height as I can with my brug when I overwinter it cause I want a tall brug tree next year...my brug is approx. 3' right now. Actually, just had a thought (whoa!)...because my brug is "V" shaped, perhaps I'll cut it into two pieces (two standards) and create two of the same plant. I have just decided that I'm gonna let the side growth resume so that I can send out cuttings later this year...interested??? Just in case you're wondering, mine is a NOID cream...

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Jan - you BET I'm interested!! How often does it bloom and when? Mine haven't bloomed yet and it's been in the ground since May(ish)? But then again, it could be because they are getting use to their new territory - what do you think? I just don't know about these ...

YEAH, I KNOW!! That photo is what made me want a Brug. I thought OMG, if I could only get my Brug to be like THAT!!! I mean wow, how incredibly STUNNING is that?!

Ok, I found another pic on the same website that one came from - no info on the Brug though ... WOW, I WANT THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thumbnail by AmandaTaylor7
NE, KS(Zone 5b)

You can get them to be like that in your zone, I think.... Do you ever get a hard freeze? I grew one from seed that had a trunk about 6 inches across (at the end of it's 2nd season). I had to use a sawsall to cut it down. I planted the root ball in the ground this year.. it is pink, though. (quite some pic you found!) WOW!!!!

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Weeeeelll, we aren't suppose to get freezes like that and we usually never do, but last year we did one night. I'll wrap mine in Christmas lights or even thick warm fuzzy blankets if I need to so that they will survive.

Let me ask - why'd you cut yours down and then replant it?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

It was HUGE- big thick trunk and over 10 ft. I put them in my basement in a semi-dormant state in winter.. .the ceiling is just over 8 ft so, I'd have to cut the tops out anyway. I have numerous brugs and lots of ETC. to store for winter, so I just whacked it off a t soil level (in the pot). Had I clipped some off the top out, it and stored it, it probably would have died back to the roots anyway, so I whacked it, let the root ball go dormant in the pot, in the basement. In winter, I like to keep them alive and just barely "growing"... rather than completely dormant, then I get blooms sooner in spring. But that bad boy was tooo big (did I say that?). Too big to try to keep semi-dormant. You won't have to worry about bringing them in where you live, but I would keep the Christmas lights and blankets on hand, just in case! Guess I didn't take a pic of the trunk, but it was the tallest brug I've had.

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow - that's what I want! A good 10-12ft. brug with a thick tree trunk!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I'll take some cuttings for you this fall, it hasn't grown as tall in the ground this year, but I'm sure it will for you in TX. It was loaded with blooms up and down the branches before I had to cut it. I'm going to experiment with what's left after I cut it back, I'll stack bags of mulch or garbage bags of leaves over the area and push my growing zone... I'll be happy if I see growth next spring.... or I'll be disappointed and try a different area the next winter. Here, I found a pic with the whole plant....

CONGRATS AMANDA!!! Oh, HOW exciting! Yes, ALL brug lovers remember their very first buds, pushing out... waiting waiting then the "skirt" starts opening and WAH LA!! Breathtaking Beauty AND YOU helped it to be! So happy for you! Now you get to anticipate the bud swelling and more waiting for the beauty and the scent! But it is ALL worth it. Hip Hip HOORAY! (Bonnie standing, clapping hands and whistling) Go Amanda, Go Amanda! Now..... how bout that Philo? lol

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Ha ha ha, you're cracking me up - sound like me!! I've been nagging my hubby about the Philo ... I've got the PERFECT spot for it in the front yard but he's a little worried it might shed all of it's leaves again during another transplant ... I don't think so since it's so close to where it is now but ... you never know. I'm working on him though! I want this done already! I'm wanting to put some nice shorter-growing (or routinely pruned) hibiscus there!!

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOO PUMPED about these buds! I hope there are more than just 2, but even still, 2 is more than I thought I'd get this year! WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

hey i've been watching this thread for a while. i have had the same problem with mine. i took it from a cutting and rooted it over the winter. it was hardly 2 1/2 feet until it started to grow in July...i tyhink that was because of the drought. yesterday i went "digging" in the leaves and foun that it is about to Y!!!!!! and it has a bud!!!! i'm just as excited as you are!

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We can share our excitement and pics together!!!! Isn't this neat!?!??!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah it is awesome!!! the plant this one came from never bloomed for like 2 years, and then this cutting is just barely starting to branch! woohoo! mine is a NOID, so i'll have to ask yall what it is whenever it blooms.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

hiehrdsouthrnr - got any more pics? That garden is pretty ... I'll update this thing with pics of mine this evening. You guys won't believe it - I just started back to school so between that and a full0-time job and family, it's not as easy to fertilize. But I did Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon I had 5 more NEW buds!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I love all the excitement here... I thought I'd calm down this year, but I haven't. LOL I love my babiez even more this year!

This is the only place I can go where I'm 1/2 way understood.. my neighbors just smile with that "look" like... stay back.. your too weird about your plants.. Look on their face.. LOL At least ya'll know what life is all about here. :-)

Here is a shot of my jungle carport.. check out my Jurassic Zinnias! LOL They outgrew my brugs!

Thumbnail by ZZsBabiez
NE, KS(Zone 5b)

That's SO pretty! Look at your stuff! I have some volunteer zinnia's that are tall like that (Jurassic- cute ZZ :). I like how the blooms are pretty for so long. They came up in my passionvine pot which usually doesn't bloom at their height level, so it's nice to have some color. I wanted to say, I'm having a blast "experiencing" your first blooms and all the excitement.... Hi Jan if you're still watching this thread, I've been busy and can't visit with DGer's as much these days, but I still think about ya all! It will calm down in the office soon, I hope. Don't forget to go outside at night and take a big whiff of the scent.... They all have a different smell depending on the kind you have... some sweeter, some spicier and some are more citrisy sweet, but they only smell at night. Diehard, what are those pink blooms? Lilies? Such a pretty place to sit and relax.

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Congrats Amanda!

Beautiful garden pic ZZ!!

AuntB, I definately like that brug you have that starts white and turns pink!!!

Jan, (im)patiently awaiting more brug blooms to give birth...

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Hi AuntB...we posted at the same time...!!!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I'll send cuttings if you want some, Jan. It will be time in about a month. I start watching the weather for frost warnings about mid Sept. (what a coinkydink we posted-I really was thinking I haven't talked with Jan for a while, wonder how she is!) Here is the same plant (white to pink) this year. It is an unknown I started from seed, but it reminds me of Equador Pink.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH, pretty, ZZ and AuntB!! You guys are right - this is the most incredible place. Makes us plant lovers feel SANE!!

Here are the promised pics of my new buds ... rarr!!! ;)

Aaaand - here's another pic.

Thumbnail by AmandaTaylor7
NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Aww, just adorable, Amanda! It blows me away sometimes how fast the buds grow and you are trying so hard to be patient. But, I still get impatient to see the buds start, that will never change. They remind me of okra when they are new and then a couple days later, they've tripled in size. Oh, just in case you didn't know..... (the okra turned on a light bulb) - ALL parts of the plant are HIGHLY toxic to people and animals... Oh, my look at the time. (glad it's Friday, tomorrow!) Amanda, you need to walk the floor a little longer, makes the blooms be birth-ed sooner! lol -Bonnie, signing off. :)

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Ha ha, I know JUST what you mean, AuntB!! This is my first time for all of this. :)

Here's an updated pic of my Brug on the left, taken this morning (compare it to the first pic at the beginning of the thread = proper fertilizing results!)

Push Amanda, Push harder! I bet they unfurl their little skirts by tonight! Get the birth announcements ready! Thanks for sharing your experience, it is so fun following along with you. Oh my, what a difference the food made, they are rather hoggish about their diet. Is that duct tape on the stem??? You may have mentioned it in an earlier post, but I couldn't find it quickly... I did look, I caught Andy's post where he referred to the blooms as "majestic ecstasy", that is great, I like it. How'd I miss that? (Now I'm curious about what his bloom looked)... Andy? ? Can we see? What are the purple blooms, Amanda? Lilies? They're pretty!
